"Best of the Best" Contributors to this piece: Moe, Lady D, Bud, Brenda & Doobie These are some of our favorite restaurant eats...and some of our favorite foods from those places. The Behind Barz Crew has been all over tasting some of the South’s best foods! A couple of weeks ago my friend Becky & took off on our bikes towards Zebulon just for a ride & maybe a place to eat. We came across the Fargo Cattle Co. Steakhouse in Zebulon, and decided to give it a try. Becky had a steak, and I had the lunch sized baby back ribs. We were both happy with our choices, and our server, Arianna was a true delight. While today, Sat. Feb. 13th was a tad chilly for 2 wheels, we drove back to the Fargo, camera & notepad in hand, and both ordered a rack of baby back ribs with a stuffed potato. Warm brown bread and honey butter come with the meal. Both of us agreed that those ribs were perfection on a plate. Today our server was Keke, who brought us large warm wet napkins to keep our sticky hands clean. Then we shared a huge hunk of vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate and caramel. The ice cream was huge, delicious and hard as rock! Towards the end of our meal, Arianna came on duty, walked over to our table, gave us both big hugs, and visited with us for a while. Truly, Fargo has an outstanding, friendly staff, and they are biker friendly. The Fargo Cattle Co. Steakhouse is owned & operated by Mr. James Reynolds, and is not a chain type restaurant. It does follow a western theme inside, with rugged, solid, comfortable tables and chairs. We both drank water and the check came to a very reasonable $32.87, Give the Fargo a try, mention Behind Barz Magazine, and give their ribs a try.

Sunday afternoon, Feb. 21st found Becky & I on highway 301 S. passing through Kenly, towards Selma looking for an out-of-the-way, unique place to have lunch. We found it in Selma at 106 W. Railroad Street. What caught my eye was the sign of a Hula Girl out front by the sidewalk. We pulled into a parking area in front of the restaurant and gave it the once-over. Lots of parking on both sides and in front, the OPEN sign was lit, and it sure did appear to be ‘unique’, so we went in. The inside is an eclectic mix of candy store, ice cream shop, and Ava Gardner fan club all wrapped up in a tropical paradise theme. Becky & I both decided to try the BBQ beef plate. Her choice of sides were a garden salad and potato salad, mine were french fries & potato salad. Our food came with sort of a ‘Texas toast’ and everything was delicious. The beef was tender, tasty, needed no extra sauce and we both received generous portions. This is an order & pay at the front counter, then they bring you your food kind of place. They do take Visa. After our meals, we both had ice cream cones. They offer 36 flavors of North Carolina Maola Ice Cream, and my mint-chocolate chip waffle cone was perfect. The Hula Girl Ice Cream and Grill is locally owned and operated by Ray & Rose Pittman. In fact, Mr. Ray was serving the food today. Our check came to $26.94 with us both drinking water. The Hula Girl is a nice, clean place, with outdoor seating & plenty of picnic tables. There is lots of room to park your bikes, and I think the kids would really enjoy going there too. Some of our favorite eateries! Send us your

"Best of the Best" and we’ll give them a try!

After spending most of the day (2nd day) at the printer placing BB stickers in the back of each copy of the magazine the BB Crew decided to head out for some nurishment. We decide to try a fairly new restaurant that is located right across the street from one of our wonderful advertisers, Carolina V-Twin. Anita’s Authentic Mexican Restaurant had opened just a couple months prior to our visit. As we walked in we noticed that the restaurant was very, very clean and so were the bathrooms! Edwin greeted us and explained to us about the menu and made suggestions to us. Edwin, owner, chef, waiter, etc...he goes by many hats, said that they do not serve salsa at their restaurant. At first, I was a little upset. No salsa! But after listening to him explain why and then eating my dish without the salsa beforehand I understood why!

We have had lots of requests of late so, in every issue we will feature some local eateries that serve up great food and we think are worth the ride to patronize. If you have a favorite eatery that meets this criteria, send us a photo of the food and the info for the eatery and then tell us why this food item and the eatery is... “The Best Of The Best”!

All of the ingredients at Anita’s are FRESH! The menu items are AUTHENTIC! We were blown away! The flavors that we tasted were simply amazing! What a wonderful experience! You’ve just gotta try! We assure you that it is well worth the ride to this little known gem! The secret will not last long! Doobie, Vinney, Moe & Lady D

ARZ

your Health Behind Barz HAIR... Hair, Hair, everywhere…hair. Good hair, bad hair, helmet hair, and even no hair. There is hair on our shoulders, our bellies, on our floors, and even down the drain. A hair can be defined as a slender, thread-like outgrowth from a follicle in the skin of mammals. Composed mainly of keratin, it has three morphological regions—the cuticle, medulla, and cortex. Your hair begins growing from a root in the bottom of the follicle. The root is made up of cells of protein. Blood from the blood vessels in your scalp feeds the root, which creates more cells and makes the hair grow. The hair gets pushed up through the skin as it grows, passing an oil gland along the way. The oil gland adds oil to the hair and keeps it shiny and soft. It can also make it greasy. The hair is dead by the time it is long enough to poke out through the skin. Yes, hair is dead. That’s why it doesn’t hurt to get a haircut. You are born with all of the follicles you will ever have, only about 5 million. You have about 100,000 follicles on your scalp. Hair grows very fast and male hair grows faster than female hair. The shape of your follicles determines whether your hair is straight or curly. People with very curly hair have follicles that are oval-shaped and people with straight hair have round follicles. The kind of hair you have is decided by your genes. There are three types of hair that grow on the human body. They are called Lanugo hair, Vellus hair and Terminal hair. Lanugo begins growing 5 months after conception in our mother’s womb. Vellus grows on the head, body arms legs but not on the palms of our hands or the soles of our feet. The common name for Vellus is peach fuzz. Terminal grows on the top of our head, eyebrows, eye lashes, underarms and groin area. Hair, we all have it, grow it, loose it, color it, cut it. We are all truly fearfully and wonderfully made. Put your hair in the wind and keep the shiny side up!

Benefit for Debbie “D Rod” Elm City, N.C. Guardians of the Cross Bikers Ministry had a chicken plate fundraiser for Debbie Rodriguez (D Rod) in March. They sold plates for $8 each with proceeds going to Debbie to help pay for medical expenses. About 3 years ago Debbie’s left kidney was removed but her right one still continued to work. Over time her right kidneys function worsened. It was only working at 11%. Then Debbie had to start dialysis and she was also put on the transplant list. Debbie has to have someone with her 24/7. She is inable to do a lot of the things she did for herself before this came about. Debbie is very sick and her bills continue to pile up, as do her medical expenses.

Some of the friends who gathered to cook and sell plates to help Debbie back in March at Stairway to Heaven Biker Church in Elm City.

So far, a little over $5k has been raised. That is just half of what she needs to have a kidney transplant. Debbie has done so much for others in the community and has always given her all! If you can help please do. Debbie has a very long road ahead of her! She has a GOFUNDME account set up and ANY donation you can make will be a super help to her! May God bless each and everyone of y’all.

Debbie is very tired but her faith is strong! She says, “God has brought me this far and I

know that he will see me through this.”

from the

mind of big ed So, we loaded the pecans in the Dodge truck and headed out. Colleen and I were holding each others hands while I was driving and talking to her about building a chicken coop to raise some chickens. We made a wrong turn to go to the farm that we were going to sell the pecans to so I turn around and with the help of the GPS on Colleens’ phone we were back on route. As we got close to the farm (both of us never being there before) we stopped on the road to figure out, do we pull in to the drive way of the house that you could tell was the owner of the farm or turn on our side of the road that entered the farm. We decided to turn toward the house. Now mind you I am a very alert driver. I’m always looking in all directions and there was a curve a few hundred yards ahead but I can’t let my self escape the facts. As we where making up our minds I was constantly checking the rear view mirror to be sure I was in no ones way. When I made the turn to the left to pull in to the yard I looked up and two bikers where coming to a fast halt to keep from hitting the truck!

Hello you Happy Riders!!! Our time of year is in full swing. You can see the chrome shine like silver stars in the far horizon of the freeways. You can hear the rumble as you sit on your porch enjoying the evening air and sure enough the bike passes your yard and you watch it as biker and machine disappear out of sight. Yelp, the fair weather riders are back on the road again! This article is some what difficult to put in this magazine. I’m going to do it cause I want to keep it real. The whole reason I type this in and send it to Doobie is because I love being a biker and sharing my experiences with other fellow bikers. But as I right this there is a blanket of shame that runs over me and I feel I must put it out there so you readers can see thru my eyes and maybe stop and think before we get on the road. Life is a precious thing. I’m a believer of God and I believe we are all part of a purpose that God has a plan for. I believe what I’m going to tell you is one of the many plans God has set for me. Before I start.. I want to say with all my heart that I deeply apologize to the two bikers that were riding in the southern Wayne county area. Me and Colleen woke up on a beautiful morning and I cooked some breakfast of scramble eggs, bacon, grits and toast. We were playing with our son, Wyatt, as we were making plans on what to do that day. When Colleens’ Mama wanted us to sell her pecans for her at a local farm we agreed ‘cause she had about 700 pounds of pecans and she was way to busy on the family farm to go do this herself.

My heart sank!!! I looked them both in the eyes! I put my hand up toward the windshield to let them know I messed up and I was sorry!! They both looked at me like I was crazy and i don’t blame them at all but they turnt the throttle and went on after I got out of their way. I sat there in the driveway with my mind racing to what could have been devastating to all of us. More so them. I told Colleen, I couldn’t believe I did that. I told her, that I just looked at the road ahead but I turned my head to turn toward the driveway and when I looked back up there they were! My heart was thumping and I felt horrible! As many times as I tell people to look twice. To be aware of bikers on the road. Here I go doing damn near causing a wreck due to not paying attention. It’s a wake up call and I feel that it must be expressed! People it only took a second! It could have changed everyone’s life that was there in that small fraction of a second. I beg you folks. Always look. Then look one more time. I won’t forget that day. Thank God nothing happened and life went on, but it could have been real bad and as a biker I feel more hurt inside that I could have done this to those two bikers. Always look twice folks. We don’t get many second chances.

Big Ed (2Timer)

I pray that God keeps Watch over us as the New season is here. Be safe and I’ll be Seeing you, Behind Barz.

G.I. Joe's - Salute There is a café area with beverages and snacks for Veterans to come and enjoy talking with each other. Many veterans were there when Behind Barz had the privilege to visit with the Curator, Mr. Eric Cantu. The veterans shared their experiences and as they spoke we could see the memories coming to life in their eyes. We were able to hear the dedication they have for America, their families and us. Along one wall there are posters and photos, some of Rolling Thunder Operation held annually in Washington, DC. Mr. Ted Sampley who is one of the original organizers of Rolling Thunder is from… Kinston, North Carolina!

story: Lady D photos: Moe

Kinston, NC

In Kinston, North Carolina there is a museum that has been established to honor our American Veterans. Contained within are walls of honor to all who have served in major wars, from the Revolutionary War to the present. Honor and respect is given to those who have served in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. Men and women who have served are shown the utmost honor. This museum is at: 211 N. Herritage Street and is called GI Joe’s Military Living History Museum. The displays in GI Joe’s are from donations and there are many handmade items as well. One heartwarming display is a chair that was donated with the names of North Carolina POW/MIA painted on the seat. Around the edge of the seat are the states with the number of POW/MIA from that state. As a POW/MIA is identified, a white rose is painted by their name in remembrance. This chair was hand painted in 2013 by Linda A Pukalo and at that time there were 1645 men and women missing. It was humbling to see two white roses for the POW/MIA from the State of North Carolina. So many men and women willingly gave their life so we can have freedom.

GI Joe’s - Salute will participate in activities that honor American Veterans, help the Veterans and their families, promote Americanism, Flag Retire ments, POW/MIA remembrance ceremonies, speak to classes, and programs of non-political education. GI Joe’s is a nonprofit organization and all monies, memorabilia which are raised or donated to them…go to the veterans and to maintain the museum. Veterans and Volunteers staff the museum. So, when you are riding in the Kinston area, drop in and visit. They are open Wednesday through Saturday 9 am until 4 pm. If you want to help or need information contact the curator Mr. Eric Cantu at 252.560.8031. We salute you G.I. Joe’s, with the utmost honor and respect. Thank-you for what you are doing so we may remember the wars of our nation, and the sacrifices that our troops have made.

One Veteran has hand built airplanes used in the major conflicts that are on display. Another Veteran has aircraft made of Legos that are on display. There is a map of Vietnam on display that our troops used in combat. MRE’s are on display as well. Another distinguished veteran has written a book to read of his life in Kinston, way back in the day!

You may ride because you think it’s cool The code and respect are both old school I suggest you learn the old school ways They're not found in your Credit Glide manual on any day There found in experience of years on the road It’s not just buy a motorcycle and off you go It’s not about tattoos or long hair And it’s damn sure not about what you wear It’s not even about what you ride Or who wears the same patch and rides at your side What it is about is attitude Love, loyalty, and honor too Respect is learned and earned as well And may just keep you out of hell Don’t expect that you can just get by Without showing respect to the old school that ride Don’t sport your weekend warrior shit and be rude Like you’re some bad ass with an attitude Or an old school lesson may be what you’ll receive An unwanted education you don’t want I believe

Above: The before photo.

I started out with a bone stock 2007 Dyna Superglide Custom. Last fall I stripped her down to the bare frame. I then proceeded to have the frame, swingarm, aftermarket Wide Glide triple trees and side covers powder coated in Blue Starlight. I bought round, smooth derby, air cleaner, horn and points covers and had them powder coated white so the paint would adhere to the chrome. In addition to the Wide Glide triple trees, I have a Headwinds stretched headlight, chrome lower legs, Ness turn signal brackets and a 21” Smooth profile front wheel. The front spoiler is from Corbin. I put a wrap around Jesse James front fender on it. It’s got 1 1/2” t-bars and chrome controls with braided cables. I put forward controls on it but also retained the mid pegs so I could have a second place to put my feet on longer rides. The pegs are all Harley “flames collection”. I upgraded the speedo to the Harley with a tach. The gas caps are Ness. It has a Cobra Powerpro HP 2 into 1 exhaust system. Screamin Eagle 255 cams, Accel Stealth Super coils and a stage 2 air cleaner. The whole thing was tuned using a Screamin Eagle pro race tuner. The bags are Harley. They came from the factory wrapped in leather. I stripped the leather off and had them painted to match. It’s been lowered in the rear using 10.5” Progressive shocks. The paint was matched to the powder coat. I decided to go with a full on Viking theme. The round covers were painted to resemble a Viking shield. There are different murals all the way around the bike. I have to give my painter and Powder Coater loads of credit here, without them, my dream bike wouldn’t have been possible. Paint was done by: Andy Hawks @ Krazy Karls Kustom paint in Ararat Virginia. Powder coat was done by: Jay Kovatch @ Precision Powder Coat in Pilot Mountain North Carolina.

If you have a Killa' Kustom bike and would like it featured in Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine, please send us a message on FB or give us a call.

Since we had a while to wait before the Oracle was supposed to contact us, we decided to travel back to July 2nd, 1947, visit the town of Hollister, California and see for ourselves what really happened. It may have not been the start of bikers getting a black eye in the media, but it sure was a milestone. WWII had been over for almost 2 years and the returning soldiers had become acquainted with the venerable military workhorse, the Harley-Davison WLA, Flathead 45. After falling in love with those magnificent machines, men wanted to ride motorcycles again. Their choices in 1947 were surplus Harley 45’s, Indians, Triumphs, BSA’s, and the relatively new leader of the pack, the powerful HarleyDavidson EL & ES series with the now famous Knucklehead motor. After doing some research on the internet we rode back out to the Hidden Highway and headed East into the past for nearly 70 years. After arriving on July 2nd, 1947 we rode west, into the sun towards Hollister, California. The trip was easy enough, we packed some food, filled our tanks up with fresh water when needed, and arrived on the outskirts of Hollister on July the third. Already the little town was becoming a beehive of activity. Motorcycles, cars & trucks were pouring in from every road leading to Hollister. The vast majority of the riders & drivers were Veterans who had returned home after one to four years overseas and were looking for some fun. They had fun all right! There has always been an ‘inter-service rivalry’ and even rivalry between different units in the same branch of the Armed Forces. This sort of rivalry was often settled with fistfights, and most often when heavy quantities of alcohol were involved. And that boys & girls is exactly what happened in Hollister! It happened like this; Some Marines gave some Sailors lip about not seeing ‘real’ combat. The Sailors reminded the Marines that the United States Marine Corps falls under the Department of the Navy. A typically proud Marine responded with a loud “Yeah…..The MEN’S department!” And then it was on…it was so on! Some guys from the legendary 82nd Airborne Division asked some guys from the Big Red One where they were hiding during the war, and another brawl started up, and before we knew it, there was chaos.

30

story: Bud Dunlap But let me point out that this was most certainly not a ‘riot’. Those guys didn’t smash private property, they just smashed each other….repeatedly. The vast majority of the combatants were genuine, trained, experienced killers who had gone up against equally experienced, dedicated enemy soldiers and defeated them. In these cases however, they were not out for blood, when one of them had enough pummeling, he just yelled ‘Enough’ and the hitting stopped. No guns, no knives or weapons of any sort, it was simply the natural order of things. GIs fighting other GIs when there was no one else to fight. Just your average two block long fisticuffs contest with a few hundred participants. There was actually only one civilian involved in the melee. As Zeke & I walked down different sides of sidewalks observing the fun while avoiding the fists and all the time snapping photos with our little GoPro cameras, Sue had her own ideas.

Everyone including me n’ Zeke froze. The silence was deafening. I just knew the boys from the 7th Fleet were going to aid their shipmate & rescue him from the wrath of Suicide Sue. Once again…I wasn’t even close. The Sailor grinned from ear to ear & said: “Wow lady, I’ve never seen a dame move like that before! Let me buy you a beer.” The crowd went wild. All the aggression was forgotten, fighting stopped, and then a group of guys walked up to Sue, hoisted her on their shoulders & carried her off to a saloon for all the cold beer she could ever want. She was the hero of the day. When Sue told her new fans she was a Nurse, they all cheered. If she had been able to tell them that she served in the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper medic and was jump qualified, they’d have elected her Mayor! Still, there is a love affair between men who have been in combat and Nurses, all Nurses, those Angels who have been to war, and those who haven’t. And there you have it, what really happened in Hollister! But thanks to a staged photograph and media hype, the blame fell on the bikers and a legend was born. Two days later on the 4th of July, 1947 America would learn about a mysterious crash outside of Roswell, New Mexico and Hollister would soon fade from memory. I wonder if our journey out west at that particular time caused a ripple effect that allowed the Roswell event to occur. Food for thought.

art: Tabatha Ferrell Sue, being an RN walked through the action to see if anyone was seriously hurt or in need of immediate medical attention. She saw a good looking young fellow sitting on the ground rubbing his jaw and reached down to help him up. He held up his massive right arm which sported a large tattoo of an anchor with the letters U.S.N across the middle. As Sue jerked him up to his feet he foolishly slapped her across the back of her blue jeans and said “Thanks sister, that’s a nice aft deck you got there!” He really, really shouldn’t have done that. Since Suicide Sue was one of the few women there, and the only one in the street, most eyes were on her anyway, so about 100 pairs of eyes witnessed what happened next. Sue whirled around & gave the Sailor a spinning back kick to the midsection, went into a flawless leg sweep which sent the Sailor back to the ground, then hopped on his chest with both feet and said: “Do you wanna’ try that again Popeye?”

Eventually Sue managed to slip away from her admirers and we were able to travel back to the future and report our adventures to our friend ‘Brain’.

Part 2 We leave the past, skip over the present, and arrive in the future again. Once we got back to the Hidden Highway we briefly returned to our present then twisted the throttles and headed forward into the future. Sort of a touch-andgo maneuver, if you will. Upon arriving at Hometown H-D of the year 2016 we were lucky to find Brain inside doing some shopping. “Hey guys.” Brain said “Good to see you again, whatcha’ been up to?”

TANK FULL OF TIME Chapter Seven continued... Since we had a number of adventures to share with our future friend, we all moseyed over to Burnouts Tavern for some refreshments & a debriefing session. Brain was enthralled with our stories, and took careful notes. Before we left he said that he wanted us to deliver a letter to the Oracle, and since we had all the time in the world, I told him that I’d like to see Debbie again. As luck would have it, Brain told us that she was nearby covering a charity event for Behind Barz Magazine so while he went to write his letter, we rode over to a local Church and found Debbie wandering around the parking lot taking photos of the people and their bikes. “Wow, it’s great to see you guys again.” She said with a big smile. “Are you riding in the event today? It’s a run to raise money for a family with a sick child and horrendous medical bills.” I guess some things don’t change with time. Even in the days to come, bikerz will join forces to support folks in need. It always touches me to see this kind of love and kindness in action. Note: I didn’t misspell the word bikerz, I simply feel that men and women who live the Behind Barz Life deserve a special designation apart from those who simply ride motorcycles. It’s a compliment. “We’d love to Doobie.” I said “But we’re waiting for Brian to give us a letter to deliver to an old friend, so we can’t stay too long, but we wanted to say “Hi” to you.” Even though we couldn’t go for the ride, we all stuffed some money in the donation jar sitting on the ‘sign-up’ table. I imagine that the person who counted the money later would be surprised to find 100 year old bills in the jar! We all gave Doobie some hugs, wished her the best & rode back over to the Hog shop to wait for Brain. He was waiting for us with an envelope addressed to the Oracle. “This may be the first trans-time letter ever delivered.” He said. “Of course, it’s easy to write a letter for folks in the future to read, but not so much to send messages back to the past.” He pointed out. I supposed so. Heck, lately life had been so strange, that nothing seemed out of the realm of possibility anymore.

Look for TANK FULL OF TIME on Facebook! While there you can read all the chapters, get more character info, learn about the author and see more of Tabatha’s killer artwork!

We gave Brain handshakes and hugs, and then motored off to the Hidden Highway for the return trip to our present time. As soon as we arrived my cell phone starting buzzing, announcing a new message from the Oracle. He wanted to see us at once. Well sir, that was just fine since we needed to see him too. Honestly, I really wondered why he wanted to see us. I suspected that the Wizard had cooked up some high-tech toys for us. For a change, I was right, but I never would have guessed where the Company wanted to send us!

Next episode VIII….. ’The Mission’. LOOK for TANK FULL OF TIME on Facebook soon. You will be able to catch up and follow all of your favorite characters on their adventures in the past, present and future!!! You will be able to read more words of wisdom from Budman and see more of Tabatha Ferrell’s keller art! When you’ve got a Tank Full of Time, you don’t need anything else!

Never Judge A Bo Bikers are judged all the time simply because of the way they dress, their tattoos, maybe even because of their long hair and beards and certainly because they ride a motorcycle. It’s a fact of life that people sum up other people simply by the way they look. It’s not right. But if people can just look a little deeper, especially with bikers, they will find that bikers give more to society than any other group. Many would give the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help someone else...and they do!

We are all writing our own books...the past, the present and the future is in the works. The dust jacket may be a little dirty, grungy or completely torn off but it’s what’s inside that counts! That old adage is true... Never, Ever Judge A Book By It’s Cover!

Book By Its Cover CHASING FIRES Everyone has to agree that it takes a certain amount of true grit to be a firefighter. They are undoubtedly some of the greatest and toughest heroes out there. We have to admit, when that fire spontaneously combusts into that great big massive fireball, these guys and gals are the ones you want plowing through your front yard in that big red fire truck, knocking down your door, smashing out your window with an awesome giant ladder, to save you from a Hugh Latimer demise. Grandpa JC, aka Carlton Parks, is just one of those “bad azz” firefighters with unmeltable ice water in his veins. He has been chasing fires since 1977. He currently is Captain at Goldsboro FD full time and he works part time and volunteers as Assistant Chief of Belfast FD. As we all know, being a firefighter comes with its hazards. Grandpa JC has had first, second and third degree burns, as a result of being trapped in a house fire. He recovered fully after surgeries and skin grafts. He has been bitten 5 times at once by a black widow spider and survived. He is also a survivor of Hodgkins Lymphoma. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1985. The cancer has reared it’s ugly head several times, but each time after treatment, thankfully, he has gone into remission. This past December, the cancer was once again back. Grandpa JC is on his countdown to his last couple of chemo treatments. He is anxious to get back out there on that chrome horse of his. Grandpa JC is one of the original, founding members and VP of The Brothers of the Inferno MC, founded in 2013. He is also the proud Father of a beautiful daughter and Grandpa to two grandchildren. When asked why he became a firefighter, his response was “ I love being able to help people when they need help. It gives you a good feeling going into something bigger than you are and come out of it a winner.” I think that says it all!!! BB would like to thank Grandpa JC for his time and story. Our continued prayers go out to you for a full recovery.

ill Lyerly put on one heck of a show at the Nash Arts Center in Nashville, N.C.!!! He and his band really entertained the folks there that Thursday evening! Check out Bill’s Facebook page or website to find out where his upcoming shows will be in the next few months. www.billlyerly.com

Nash Arts is a private, nonprofit organization, which celebrates, promotes and produces artists and arts activities, provides support to other area arts organizations and encourages and generates arts education in order to enhance the quality of life in Nash County. Our organization showcases local, regional and national artists, professional and emerging, as well as self-taught artists and craftsmen. Our goal is to reach out to all members of our community. Nash Arts is housed in The Nash Arts Center, a former Baptist Church built in 1914, that was slated to be demolished and made into a parking lot in 1983, much to the dismay of local citizens.

In Nov. of 1984, a group of concerned citizens, led by Hazel Valentine, mother of former congressman Tim Valentine, came to this historical buildings rescue by receiving permission from the county to “dust off the pews and have a few programs.” The rest, as they say, is history!

merican roots rock rebel Bill Lyerly has a fascination with Europe that follows the tradition of two famous bluesman with whom he has performed. Both John Lee Hooker and Bo Diddley found a great echo in the Old World for theri music, a scenario which has also led Lyerly to establish himself in the Basque Country. This veteran guitarist, singer/songwriter and keyboard artist has had a magnificent response from the public who flock to his live performances. Like those shows, Lyerly records showcase his own unique vision of American roots music. Lyerly began his musical career at age eleven after hearing the blues/rock influenced music of the British Invasion. He played with bands throughout middle school, high school and college and in 1975 co-founded Super Grit Cowboy Band, called “the South’s hottest honky tonkers” by The Village Voice. In 1980 Lyerly signed with RCA Nashville and began writing and recording albums and CDs, which include: Prodigal Son, Higher Ground, From The Old School, Railroad Station Blues, Colbalt Blues, Motel Room Blues, Requiem Mess, The Twang Years and Too Hurt To Cry. From 1999-2000 Lyerly was nominated for five CAMMYs, an East Coast rhythm and blues award, and won Best New Artist in 2000. Other greats Lyerly has performed with include: REM, Paul Rodgers, Gregg Allman, Eric Burdon, Levon Helm, John Mayall and many more!
