Editorz Notez Wow! What a busy past couple of months in the Behind Barz world! So busy, in fact, that we had to add a few pages and do some rearranging. We were still not able to get everything we wanted in this issue. Hopefully by the next issue we will have a little normalcy and will get everything back in sequence. We have a project that we are very excited about starting in July, NCPacks4Patriots Heroes Drive (see the flyer on page 6). We donate magazines that we have left over every issue to them and they send them to the troops. It is totally awesome what they do for our heroes! NCPacks is comprised of all volunteers and spearheaded by Barbara Whitehead. We need your help! You can bring items to any of the participating BB advertisers to be given to NCPacks4Patriots or you can take your items directly to them in Winterville. We have a list of suggested items on our Facebook and website. Every issue we are going to include the logo of the advertiser who collects the most items! So, show your support of NCPacks4Patriots and your favorite BB advertiser by dropping off items at their location. Remember, it’s the simple things that make life grand! Doobie We want to send a shout-out to Susan who is battling cancer right now. Keep fighting, stay positive and never give up! We pray for you every day!

nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes
We supported over 4300 troops in March and over 7700 in April with items picked up at the center by our military. I did not count the number of care packages mailed, but if you follow our page, you will see how many packages we pack and mail every week. We have a wonderful team of donors and volunteers showing appreciation for our troops! You keep it coming in and we’ll keep it going out!
42 care packages were sent out on 2 June 16. These packages cost $17 each to mail, so we really want to encourage those financial donations to help us. Make checks payable to: NCPacks4Patriots, and mail to: 249J Third St. Ayden, NC 28513.

NCPACKS4PATRIOTS Our troops are serving in hot, sandy, and extremely difficult environments. We are collecting items to pack in care packages that will help them cope with the extreme heat. Care packages are very much appreciated by our troops as they remind our military members that they are not forgotten, and our country cares for their service. They are still deployed, still training, working, serving and sacrificing for you and for our country. Give of yourself to say thank you! 24 care packes went out today, 21 May 16! Thanks to everyone’s hard work packing and sorting and a big thanks to everyone who has donated!

cruisin’ the coast bike rally May 20th, 2016 Myrtle Beach, SC
story & photos:: Budman
The 2016 Spring Rally had a great turnout despite the fickle weather. Becky, Jay & I had a faster-than-usual ride through town on Highway 17 due to light traffic only to find that everyone else was already at Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson. Of all the places to go during the Spring Rally, MBHD is the one place, the mecca that everyone wants to visit, and with good reason. Even though parking was tough to find, bikerz were guided by staffers & local police officers with a minimum of fuss. I’m often surprised how so many people and so many bikes in such a confined area operate with no horn honking, yelling, or finger waving. I think a lot of cagers could learn a lesson in manners and respect by observing the courtesy bikerz extend to each other. As I was moving about the interior of MBHD, I saw the sales staff working furiously to keep folks from waiting very long in the checkout lines. There are a lot of good people working for that dealership. I even had the good fortune to interview Mr. Phil Schoonover, the owner of Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson for Behind Barz Magazine. Phil told me that his staff had been talking to folks at the rally, and around 60% of them were making the Spring Rally for the first time. I asked Phil what the hottest selling bikes were this year, and he told me that Street Glides are still big sellers, along with Road Glides and Road Kings. I really enjoyed talking to Phil, he’s a great guy. Several Troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol were on hand, manning a table and giving out free tote-bags, air gauges & pencils to promote motorcycle safety. The SCHP even had one of their BMW’s by the booth, and it was gorgeous. A big thanks goes out to the Troopers for their support.
Phil Schoonover, owner of Myrtle Beach H-D.
We stopped in to Rockefellers Raw Bar for some delicious seafood after we left MBHD. I make it a point to go to Rockefellers every time I’m in Myrtle Beach and get a dozen raw oysters on the halfshell and the steam-pot full of seafood. If you’re a real seafood lover, I highly recommend this restaurant. Our server Abby & her husband own the place and are very gracious people.
We hit some rain from time to time, but never got totally soaked, and we’re looking forward to staying at the Brunswick Plantation again next year. One last suggestion; If you’re looking for an exceptional breakfast, try the Sunshine Pancake House in Calabash, NC. You may have to wait a bit, but the food is totally worth it.
The Myrtle Beach HD building was surrounded by every type of vendor you can think of and everyone I asked kindly let me take their picture for this BB magazine. Bless their hearts.

Some of our favorite eateries!
These are some of our favorite restaurant eats...and some of our favorite foods from those places. The Behind Barz Crew has been all over tasting some of the South’s best foods! My longtime friend Sean & I had lunch in Warrenton, NC today and we ate at Fire House Biscuits & Burgers. I had the stock burger which comes loaded with chili, sliced onions, slaw, ketchup & mustard. That wasn’t enough for Sean so he had them toss on some bacon & cheese. Both of our burgers came with fries, and everything was quite tasty. Beats fast-food any day! Price was pretty reasonable...hamburgers start at $3.25 and cheeseburger $3.50...dogs just .99 cents. You can find Fire House Biscuits & Burgers in Warrenton, N.C. They’re open from 6-10 every day except Sunday.

Ed’s Southern Food & Spirits is a part of Goldsboro’s downtown revival. It is located on the corner of Center St. and W. Walnut St. in what used to be, Central Lunch. It is an upscale venue with striking decor. The feature local art in the main dining area and have a full bar. Their menue is extensive but with familiar foods that jave just a little twist. Moe and I visited at lunchtime and we started with their “fried green tomatoes” appetizer. It was topped with local Wayco country ham and tangy Holly Grove Farms goat cheese whipped with honey and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. (I have to be honest and say this was my first time ever trying fried green tomatoes. I am sure that I am now ruined for life because there just can’t be another fried green tomatoe that tastes this good!!!) We shared the appetizer and it was plenty for two people but next time I am ordering one just for me! My lunch consisted of their lightly battered shrimp, delicately fried with a side of House Remoulade. With my shrimp I ordered the steak fries. This plate was awesome all on its own but all I could think about were the fried green tomatoes! If you are near Goldsboro on a ride or on your way to another destination, you need to stop in for a visit. You will be glad you did! Definately get the fried green tomatoes appetizer! Doobie

Tippett’s Mill is always a great place to ride to! It’s a beautiful setting perched above the mill pond. The outdoor bandstand is nestled under some trees providing shade. Just up the hill at Tippett’s Country Store there is a front porch overlooking the parking lot and mill pond. Inside Tippett’s has some of the coldest beer around! On this particular day, it was Bikefest with the Blue Flame Band playing down by the pond. mind of big ed some article. So, with that being said, now y’all will see from here on out what craziness swirls around inside my skull. Have you ever just looked at someone and wondered, “what happened to you?” Did your Mama drop you on your head too many times. I mean I don’t get some people. I don’t say anything most times but sometimes I just sit there and look at them like WTH?

Hello you Happy Riders!!! It’s time y’all got to know who I am. Of course you know my name is Ed, but that’s not what I mean. I started writing for this fine magazine maybe a year after I met Moe. I met her at our club house and our friendship started from there. Moe has always been super nice to me and now I see her like a member of my family. She was added to my Facebook some time way back and she seemed to get a laugh out of my morning posts. I started calling it ( Good morning you Happy people!) I basically talk junk like most folks do but it’s not only that...I see the world changing before my eyes and seeing it go so far past what my Grandpa had prepared me for. My Grandpa was the most respected man in my life and he spent most of my childhood teaching me to be a man, to stand up for what I believe in, to be respectful and to have faith in God. When he died on April 22 of 2006 I lost a part of me. I try to keep all his teachings and I do the best that I can. But I’m still who I am and all the craziness that comes with it. I’ve never had a problem with voicing my opinion, my views, my thoughts, and the way I see the world. I’m not afraid of how people see me or what I may face because of it. If I offend...Well, either you flip the page, cry me a river or get over yourself. I will not change me! I asked Moe could I write for Behind Barz and she had me talk to Doobie. After Doobie saw the things I write about on my Facebook it wasn’t long before I was talking to you good people. Now folks, I’m a biker to the bone and writing about bike rides is fun and I love it, but I also want to be true to myself and y’all. I want y’all to see me and not just
Like folks who are going to vote for Hillary? If you are a woman and you are going to vote for her cause she’s a woman, do us all a favor and wipe your butt with the voting sheet ‘cause that is what it’s worth. It’s kinda like voting for Hitler if Adolf was actually named Amanda... HA HA HA!! Or...The save a tree people. You know the folks that chain themselves to a tree to save a tree. Kinda makes me want to ask them, “so, what do you wipe your a$$ with, huh? Or, how bout the animal lovers that are out of touch with, you know, human beings! The kinda of people who would give a dog a pork chop but forget about the homeless man right beside the dog who hasn’t eaten for days. Humans are more important then animals, people!!! Yes, I am kinda raw. Maybe you don’t like my views but this is still a free country, at least for now. All these cry babies whining ‘cause a man wants to sit down and pee next to a woman, but so lost in that craziness that they are not seeing the government pulling their smoke and mirrors act on us, “we the people.” We are surrounded by stupid people folks! Like folks who say guns are bad. Hmmmm...Ok, if so, I guess I’m one lucky bastard ‘cause my Smith & Wesson has just been waiting for the right moment to jump up off the top of my book shelf and kill my dumba$$! It’s stupid people man!!! Like sending your kid across the county to school when a school he could attend is just two miles away. We are over-run with stupid people! When a man can break into your house and you put a bullet in his leg...Note that I said his leg...’cause you did have mercy and not kill the son of a biscuit eater. But now he can turn around and sue you for his pain and suffering. WHAT?!? It’s stupid!!! He breaks into your home. You didn’t break in to his. And it’s the government that makes these rules. So, what does that tell ya? We are controlled by stupid people, too! And what lady in in the government as we speak? Ha ha ha ha Hilary. So, there you are and if Doobie don’t get to much hate mail about me maybe y’all will see more of my thoughts, views and the such. Oh yea, I’m still going to talk about bikes, too. I’ll be seeing you Behind Barz! Big Ed aka 2Timer

Never Judge A B Bikers are judged all the time simply because of the way they dress, their tattoos, maybe even because of their long hair and beards and certainly because they ride a motorcycle. It’s a fact of life that people sum up other people simply by the way they look. It’s not right. But if people can just look a little deeper, especially with bikers, they will find that bikers give more to society than any other group. Many would give the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help someone else...and they do!

WILDMAN Bikers tend to have an unfair reputation, plausibly due to how they have been portrayed in TV shows, movies and recent events involving Bikers. People tend to think of Bikers that are patched members of a club as gang members. They may look rough on the outside, but you can’t judge a biker by their appearance. People fail to understand that being a Biker is not something fancy or something rock stars do. It’s just a way of life people choose to live. Patch holders are people, too. They have good and bad days, they have jobs, families and normal everyday problems and concerns just like anyone else. One such Biker is Wildman, aka Anthony Phillips. Wildman is a fully patched member of the Misplaced Souls MC in Goldsboro, NC. He has been with this club for over 2 years and is currently their Sergeant at Arms. He loves the Brotherhood of the club. He rides his bike everywhere he goes and represents his club when he rides. He has been riding since he was a child and states that he loves the feeling of freedom when riding. Wildman was born into a Christian family, his Dad being a Deacon in the church. He has been married to his wife, Katherine, for 23 years and says she is his biggest accomplishment in life. He is an Army Vet, spending 10 years in the service defending our freedom. He has also been an Ordained Minister since 2007. Being a Biker and being a member of a club does come with its consequences. Family and friends, including his Dad often refer to him as an outlaw. Wildman say’s, “Nothing could be further from the truth! Just because I am different, doesn’t make me a bad person. Don’t judge me just because I wear colors. I treat people the way I would want them to treat me. I will respect people as long as they respect me.” Personally knowing Wildman for years, I know he would give you the shirt off his back if he knew you needed it. He along with the other members of the Misplaced Souls hold the Polar Bear Run each year to raise money for Coats for kids and Wayne Outreach. They also participate in Jacobs Run and Save the Ta Ta’s. I think Wildman sums it up nicely when he says, “I’m a simple man, I have to enjoy my life because I only get one chance. I don’t have time to worry over what people think of me. I’ll drink a beer with the devil as long as he is respectful of me and my Brothers.”

The Hogs and Heroes Foundation WALLACE, NC Did you know that in Wallace, North Carolina; they have the very first chapter organized in N.C. of the Hogs and Heroes Foundation? The Hogs and Heroes Foundation chapter originated here in March 2014. The first National Chapter of The Hogs and Heroes Foundation began in Laurel, Maryland in 2007. They now have chapters in NY, PA, DE, MD, VA, and NC. The Hogs and Heroes Foundation are a 501-C (3) Tax Exempt Organization who are committed to raising money for those who have served in Public Safety, Military Personnel and Wounded Warriors. They will sponsor and hold fund raising events for various charities as well. The front patch for The Hogs and Heroes Foundation for North Carolina Chapter 1 has the state of North Carolina outlined on it along with the USS-NC Battleship in the middle, a Blue Star and a Gold Star on either side of the battleship for the Blue Star and Gold Star Mothers to show them honor. Also printed on the front patch is Semper Proficio meaning Always Advancing. They meet at Hwy55 in Wallace, NC for Bike Nights the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6 pm. Hogs and Heroes accept dedicated American citizen riders that support our members of Public Safety. The type of bike or trike you ride does not matter. In fact if you do not ride and want to help, they have Associate and Junior member patched in as well. They do not separate their members by gender, all they desire is that you work together to support their cause and participate in their missions and events. It was amazing to watch at the most recent Bike Night, William Hick, ( AKA Mr. Bill), who is a World War II Veteran and is only 95 years old, proudly wear his biker leather vest with the Associate Member Hogs and Heroes Foundation Patch on it. He is excited to help his fellow veterans. Mr. Bill also spoke at the memorial held for Pearl Harbor Day in Jacksonville, North Carolina. What an honor it was to speak and shake hands with one who fought for our freedom.

Rocky Mount HOG 3550 tragically lost one of our members on June 30th, 2015. George was heading East on Hwy 43 in Red Oak when a car hit his front wheel fork and flushed his bike out from under him. George likely never saw what hit him. He later died as a result of head trama at Vident Medical Center in Greenville after being airlifted from Nash General. George was a great motorcyclist, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was the primary caregiver for his wife, JoAnn, who has suffered from advanced dementia for over 6 years. He left many of us with great memories as he had uncanny was of making everyone laugh with his great sense of humor. He taught many of us life lessons from his personal experiences. Many of these lessons and memories will last us forever. George was well known for his love of butterscotch candy, his cup of ice and saddlebag full of “nabs”. George was a farmer for over 60 years and was renowned for his innovations of making things easier. He loved riding his motorcycle and was an avid hunter and gamesman. He was a great storyteller that enjoyed making people laugh. His heart was as big as his smile and he never met a stranger. George was also a retired fire fighter of Castalia Volunteer Fire Department. He was a proud member of the H.O.G. Chapter of Rocky Mount H-D for over 10 years. Rolling Thunder was the ride that started his motorcycle journey with his daughter, Amy Miller. This year at Rolling Thunder ribbons were placed on HOG 3550 members’ bikes in his memory. It has been a year since George left us, but we still laugh and tell many “George” stories.

BUDDY BLACK ~
The first time we met Buddy was back a few years ago at Bonedaddy’s Hideaway in Raleigh, N.C. He was mesmerizing on stage back then and he still is today!
Buddy is a local gem that has traveled the globe as a journey man guitar slinger. He played for and shared stages with some of music’s very best...Ernest Tubb, Johnny Rivers, John Conlee, Johnny Paycheck, Chubby Checker, Percy Sledge, Artimus Pyle, Matt Guitar Murphy, Big Bill Morganfield, Bob Margolin, Clifford Curry, Sonny Rhodes, John Anderson and the list goes on and on! His vocals are powerful and wil rattle you to your core! Buddy is known for his command of the guitar, he plays as if his guitar were an extension of his body. His stage presence is riveting. He is like a jumping bean inside a corn kernel in a microwave ...yes, it is that intense! The day that we did this photo shoot, back in June, it was pretty toasty but Buddy was primed and ready to model. He already had his bike (Harley-Davidson) parked outside shined up and ready to go. He is a blast to talk to and told us that he grew up listening to WOWO in Fort Wayne Indiana on his crystal radio. Their format was early electric blues, rock & R&B. That sounds oozes from his pores when he bends the strings!
Buddy ~ Just as cool riding a motorcycle as he is playing a guitar! Buddy recently had an album release party at the Southland Ballroom in Raleigh on 8 April 16. The Tornado Blues Band captivated us until Buddy took the stage. They are his cover band and one of our new all time favorites!
He brought out one of his favorite guitars for the session, his Gibson Trini Lopes #1... It is also featured on the cover of his new album, Fine Fine Day! That album is a crash course in what Buddy is all about. Roots rockin’ Blues! Get a copy and go see Buddy play. You will be so glad you did!!! www.facebook.com/BuddyBlackAttack

Chapter EIGHT The Mission
VIII
I responded to the Oracle’s message by calling him back. He said for the three of us to meet him at the Biker Barn tomorrow no later than 8AM. We did as he requested, and to our mild surprise, the Wizard was there with her mobile science lab. Gary and his mechanics took our bikes around back, followed by the Wizard who was carrying a briefcase. Suicide Sue, Zeke & I stepped into the Wizard’s large van with the Oracle. “First off.” the Oracle began, “I have these for you.” He said as he produced 3 devices that resembled over engineered watches attached to equally over engineered wrist bands. “These devices will allow you to travel through time without the need to return to the Hidden Highway. You’ll be able to move not only through time, but also space. These devices will enable you to instantly move to any point on the globe, at any point in time. Right now the Wizard is having similar devices hooked up to your bikes.” “Not only will you be able to move across time and space, but you’ll be able to travel trans-dimensionally, and return home.” I had a rotten feeling that this was all leading up to something bad for our heroes. I wasn’t wrong. He continued; “Some time ago, the Company was experimenting with time travel, but were never able to perfect it. Instead, we think our volunteer was sent to another dimension instead of forward into time. That’s where you guys come in. In exchange for these cool toys, and our help, we want you to rescue our volunteer. He was one of our best agents, and a fine scientist. We need him back.” I’ve learned, over the years, that anything that sounds easy usually isn’t. “I know there’s a catch to all this. What’s the catch?” The Oracle replied: “You’re right, and the catch is… the destination. We believe our agent was sent to the underworld, and your mission will be to go there, find him, and bring him back to Earth! Now, doesn’t that sound like a bucket full of fun?” Did I mention that the Oracle has an extremely dry sense of humor?
30
story: Bud Dunlap “Give us a minute to discuss this, sir.” I asked. After a quick huddle, Sue, Zeke and I decided to accept the mission. What else were we going to do? If we turned the CIA down, it was doubtful that they were going to allow us tap dance along on our merry little way. We’d disappear, and then the three of us and our bikes would spend our remaining days as playthings for Company scientists. Besides, a daring rescue mission to the underworld, with a chance to grab an innocent soul from the very clutches of the prince of darkness and return home had a ring of adventure to it. So…we told the Oracle: “Yes, we’ll take the mission.” He smiled with that devious grin of his, and produced some envelopes. They were each made out to a different law firm. The one with my return home address was made out to the Lanier Law Group, Sue’s was made out to the folks from Henson Fuerst Attorneys, and Zeke’s was to Thomas Law Attorneys.
With that heartwarming farewell, we activated our devices and phased out of this dimension into another world. It seemed as if we moved sideways for a few seconds, and everything was blurred, then we were sitting in a large, peaceful meadow, covered in thick green grass and wildflowers. The sun was shining, and an air of peace permeated the air. I heard a not unpleasant soft thumping in the distance and Sue said: “Well, if this is the underworld, it’s sure a lot nicer than I expected. It smells good too, we must have missed our mark.” As the thumping sound got closer I looked up into the sky and saw, of all things, a pearl white Huey helicopter advancing towards us. As the pilot did a lazy circle around us, presumably looking for a good landing spot, I made out some writing and designs on the aircraft. The nose had golden angel wings with a large red cross in the center. The words Angel Flight were between the wings with the word Fox underneath. The same logos were on the side doors. This Huey sparkled and shined as if it were Heaven sent.
art: Tabatha Ferrell “Read ‘em, sign ‘em, and forget ‘em.” The Oracle told us. The Company will not acknowledge any part of you three or you missions, ever. We send these waivers to different law firms so no one can put the three of you together. We don’t know you, and you don’t know each other.” I wondered if Hollywood would ever make a movie called ‘Men in Black Leathers’. They say no job is complete until the paperwork is finished, and our paperwork was officially done. Next thing we knew was the Wizard returning our bikes and setting our travel devices to the desired location.
Once the pilot had made a feather-soft landing and allowed the turbine to spool down and the rotors were slowly spinning to a stop, he stepped down to the ground and opened the side door of the Huey. He had barely managed to get the sliding door opened but a few inches when a brown, black and white blur shot out of the aircraft and hit the ground running heading straight for us. All I could tell as I was knocked to the ground was that it was a furry blur, and a long wet tongue was licking my face madly. It had caught me square in the chest and bowled me over like a ten-pin. I could hear Zeke and Sue laughing with great delight even as Sue said “Oh.. my.. gosh, it’s Chewy!” Upon hearing his name, Chewy, biker dog, leapt off of me and straight into Sue’s arms, licking her face with renewed vigor. I got to my feet so I could see for myself what was going on. Sure enough, it was Chewy, the iron butt mutt, and he was extremely glad to see us. As Zeke got his face doggy-washed I turned my attention back to the Huey. By now the pilot had fully opened the side door and was helping someone out of the ship. Chewy, having welcomed us to wherever we were, set to sniffing our bikes, running around in excited circles, hopping up on the seats, back down and running around some more. I think he was just as happy to see the motorcycles as he was to see us.
“When you have our agent in your custody, and on your bike, set your devices to ‘Home’, and you should return to this dimension and Read Chapter I by Budman Continued next page... time.” The Oracle explained. “Should?” I in the Sept-Oct 2015 issue, queried. “Yes, we predict a 95% certainty that Chapter II in the Nov-Dec 2015 you all will come back to the here & now withissue, Chapters III-IV in the out problems. Remember, you three are still Jan-Feb 2016 issue, Chapter pioneers, moving about in uncharted territory. V-VI in the Mar-Apr 2016 issue Now…git, and good luck. We’ll see you soon.” and Chapter VII in the May-June.

TANK FULL OF TIME Chapter Eight continued... Anyway….the Huey’s passenger was now walking towards us, while the pilot busied himself by polishing his ship with some spray-on wax and a large towel. It took me a moment to realize what I was seeing. The passenger was a woman, a tall woman, with a long braided blonde ponytail over her front shoulder. She was wearing knee-high white leather boots, matching hip-hugger shorts, and a fringed white leather vest with a caduceus on the front left side and a red cross on the right. She was wearing a white Nurse’s cap, and when I looked at her from the corner of my eye, I could swear that she had wings on her back. This vision radiated compassion, kindness and love. As her golden aura brought tears to our eyes, Zeke dropped to his knees sobbing, and Sue was whispering soft prayers. I just sort of stood there and babbled. I’m good at that. “Okay, come on now.” Said the Angel. “All that really isn’t necessary. Pull yourselves together.” “Am I dead? Is this Heaven?” Zeke managed to choke out between sobs. The Angel smiled with a smile that could light up the Heavens themselves. “No Honey, you’re not dead, you’re very much alive. Let me turn down the glamour a bit so you kids won’t be quite so overwhelmed.” With those words the golden aura dissipated and the Angel appeared like any smokin’ hot, six foot plus, Nordic, drop-dead gorgeous, emeraldeyed, blonde biker babe you’d ever want to see. And I thought describing her was gonna’ be tough! “You probably have some questions, so I’ll let you go first.” She said. Okay, I’m pretty sure you’re an Angel, right?” I began. “Right you are. I can see that nothing gets past you, Slick!” I continued; “And you’re a Nurse. Are all Angels Nurses?” “No Sweetie.” She said. “But all Nurses are Angels!”

Sue beamed, then she spoke up; “I told you both that a long time ago. You wouldn’t believe me, but you’ll believe her. Men are so superficial!” “Sue’s right, you know.” Our Angel said. “Nurses are put on Earth to bring comfort those who need our care. On the inside, every Nurse looks likes me, no matter how they may appear on the outside. Our beauty goes far beyond skin deep. Ask any war veteran about Angels of Mercy, they have seen us as we really are.” “Now let me introduce myself.” She said. “I’m Tal’ Tanya, and I welcome the brave and the kind to this place, so that they may move on to their next destination. Yes, Valhalla awaits brave souls, but also those who were kind to others on Earth. Even you biker types who have donated vast amounts of money to good causes, and endured riding in cold rain to help those in need, or honor a fallen hero, you too are welcome in Valhalla.” “You don’t seem shocked to see us Tal’ Tanya, especially since our destination sure isn’t anywhere nice.” I said. “We were expecting you.” Tal’ Tanya said. “The Oracle let us know you were coming, and to where you’ll be headed next.” “That Oracle sure gets around.” I said. “Indeed, the Oracle is a mysterious entity, of legendary power.” Tal’ Tanya told us. “You’re fortunate to have him on your side.” I continued; “What’s Chewy doing here? He looks younger than I remember; thinner and spritelier too, Chewy looks really good.” “As Earth Chewy once saw so many valiant warriors and heroes laid to rest, our Spirit Chewy welcomes them to their new homes. Whether they chose to move on to Heaven, Valhalla or back to Earth for another adventure, Sprit Chewy is here to greet the travelers to this dimension, and make their transitions a little easier with his presence. Souls arriving here don’t bring their motorcycles with them, which is why Chewy is making such a fuss over you guys and your bikes. He watches his old driver from here, and looks forward to the day they can ride together again.” I told Tal’ Tanya that I held a certain fondness for Hueys, and asked about hers. “My pilot, Martin, is also my husband. He first met his demise in the early days of the Vietnam War when he attempted to extract a squadron of men who were about to be overrun by enemy forces. He succeeded in getting the men to
safety, even after taking a mortal wound to his chest. He went back to Earth and became a Kiowa Warrior pilot in the Iraq campaign. Sadly, while covering a platoon of soldiers trying to get to cover, he was again, fatally wounded in action. Believe it or not, Chewy attended his military funeral too. Now, Martin, Chewy and I transport our arrivals to the destination of their choice. Some chose ever lasting peace, some reside in Valhalla, many hit the ‘reset’ button, and return to Earth.” “Reset button?” I asked. “What’s that?” “Did you ever wonder why some people are so successful in life?” Tal’ Tanya asked. “Imagine if you could go back and start over with a bit of a head start. You could grow up knowing that you wanted to have a specific career. Born with the certainty that you should never try drugs, take that first drink, always be kind to others, brush your teeth often, and watch what you eat. You wouldn’t get to pick your parents, but you could have that little edge, sort of directions for a happy life, full of success like some of those people for whom life is a breeze instead of a constant struggle. It’s not actually a ‘reset button’, but that’s what we call it. You get the idea.” I thought of how many things I would do differently if I could have a ‘do-over’ at life. Well, that adventure would have to wait for a while, at least. We still had a mission to accomplish, and we weren’t getting it done here. When he was done polishing up his Huey, Martin, the pilot, came over to our little gathering. He left his helmet lying in the doorway of the ship, and I could see a BEHIND BARZ sticker on the back. So, this guy was cool. I instantly took a liking to him. “The road to the underworld is not only paved with good intentions.” Martin said. “It is also heavily guarded by denizens of the dark, and since you aren’t invited, they will try to keep you out. The Oracle has called for some back-up, and here they come now.” As if on cue, about 20 Street Fighter bikes came rip-roaring across the landscape, ridden by members of the Derelicts RC. They pulled up to us, blipped their throttles just for effect, and then shut down their machines. The sudden silence was a blessing. Upon seeing even more motorcycles, Chewy was beside himself with joy. As he roamed amongst the new bikes, tail wagging and nose sniffing, the leader of the Derelicts dismounted his ride, and walked over to us with several bags of stuff from Myrtle Beach H-D. Okay, I thought, who doesn’t like free Harley gear?
“Greetings all y’all.” He said with a smile. “We’re here to see that you make it safely to those gates with the red-hot hinges. But before we go, I have some stuff that the Oracle asked me to give you. Each of you take one of these bags full of H-D shirts and souvenirs; there are some Behind Barz items too. I don’t know why he thought you might need these things, but here they are. Also, the Wizard sent something to give you an extra edge on your mission.” With that, he pulled out a small medicine bottle containing pills about the size of Tic-Tacs. “Put one of these in your gas tanks. You may need some extra power to pull this party off.” “What is this stuff?” I asked, as I dropped one of the pills into my Dyna’s gas tank. “These pills are made from the rarest, most volatile, potent and powerful chemical in the galaxy, according to the Wizard.” He told me. “It’s cutting edge technology, top secret.” “That’s nice.” I said.” “But exactly what are they?” “Weapons Grade Estrogen!” He replied. “The Wizard siphons air out of North Carolina University sorority houses, then compresses, distills, refines and purifies it into these pills. She gave them to us for our bikes, and then suggested that you guys may want to use some. It never hurts to have a little more power. At least that’s what Tim Taylor used to say!” Now we were locked, loaded & ready to break into the underworld, and confront the prince of darkness to acquire an innocent soul. What could possibly go wrong?

oseph R. Magee was a 67 year old, retired Correctional officer, whom was still working as a bailiff for Northhampton Co. Sheriff’s Department, when he was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on 4/21/2014. Joe loved his bike and loved riding. He was an active member of Blue Steel MC. In December of 2014, Jason Cotten, a very close friend/brother of Joe’s bought the totaled 2006 Heritage Softail FLST from Joe’s wife. Jason worked for months designing and rebuilding the bike in loving memory of his friend/brother and other fallen bikers. Jason finished the bike in October 2015 after 10 long months of rebuilding. I am sure Joe would be very pleased with the outcome.
There is a chrome plate (inset below) engraved on the bike that reads, “ In Memory of J Magee and all Fallen Bikers.” Somehow I think, everytime Jason rides that bike, Joe is right there, riding along with him. Jason recently won Master Builder of Myrtle Beach, in his class at Spokes and Bones during the MB Bike Rally.

Congratulations Jason! It was well deserved.

Great Dest
Calvary Parish and the magnificent grounds around it are worth the ride to see. Plan to spend a couple hours there to walk along the meandering paths and view the amazing frondescence that surround the church from all over the world! It is well shaded by huge trees! You will see Lebanon cedar, Chinese hawthorns, incense cedar, a live oak and many more. Calvary Episcopal Church was built during the ministry of the Reverend Joseph Blount Cheshire between 1859-1868. The architect was William Percival and the parish church was finished about 1749. With the upheaval of the Revolutionary War, the Church of England was virtually outlawed. No established church of the Anglican type filled the vacuum, so church buildings crumbled and congregations dispersed, either to other Protestant denominations or to wait out years bereft of spiritual leadership. Finally in 1784 Samuel Seabury was consecrated Bishop of the Episcopal Church in America, but not until 1819 was the congregation of Trinity Church formed in Tarboro by the Reverend John Phillips.
His ministry covered the area between Raleigh and Washington, N.C., and by 1822 his communicants had dwindled in number from ten to four. By 1833 the Church had begun to grow. In this year the Congregation of Calvary Church incorporated, formed a vestry, and called a minister. In 1834 Town Lot No. 44 was granted to the Vestry by a trust left by an eighteenth century clergyman, the Reverend Henry John Burgess. On this lot, the southern part of the present Churchyard, a small frame church was built in 1840. In October of 1842 the Reverend Joseph Blount Cheshire arrived to head the Parish. In addition to caring for the spiritual lives of his congregation, he saw to it that the Churchyard was fenced in, and then proceeded to plant it full of trees and shrubs, both native and exotic. The congregation, small as it was, soon outgrew its church and as plans to build a larger church jelled, the Vestry acquired a half-acre lot on the northeast side of the Churchyard. An adjacent half-acre was given to the church by a group of prominent citizens, not one of whom was at the time a baptized churchman. In 1859 the thirty-three communicants of Calvary Church began work on the new building with a subscription of $9,000. The plans called for a church which could accommodate a congregation of 500. The population of Tarboro in that year was around 1,200. By 1860 the walls, towers, spires, roof and floors were done. But then the War Between the States began, and the windows and doors were boarded up, to stay that way until 1866. In the brief interim between the end of the War and the grim repercussions of Reconstruction, a healthy cotton crop enabled the parishioners of Calvary Church to finish the Church. It was consecrated on May 10, 1868. The Churchyard itself is, of course, a memorial to generations of faithful friends of the Church. Mary Sumner Blount is buried here. She was the daughter and wife of Revolutionary War heroes, General Jethro Sumner and General Thomas Blount, a Representative of North Carolina. With Mrs. Blount’s trust fund, the congregation bought land and erected the first frame church, later replaced by the present church. While in the churchyard, you will see English yews, live oaks, Japanese magnolia and American holly, and a number of nineteenth century tombstones. Against the east wall behind the Church are a number of poignant infants’ graves,

Set into the wall near the tree are the headstones from the graves of Lawrence and Sabra Irwin Toole, whose descendants take up a good percentage of the Churchyard. These stones date from the eighteenth century and were moved here from Shiloh to preserve them from the erosion of the Tar River. Towering above these graves are incense cedars and hemlocks, and near the south door of the Church are a pair of silver firs, very rare to this area. Near the south gate of the Churchyard is the headstone of Col. William Lawrence Saunders, who collected and compiled the colonial records of North Carolina and whose courage under interrogation is recorded by the inscription, “I decline to answer.” Camellias, azaleas, sweetholly, and boxwood fill the southwest quadrant, and the main path to the Church is guarded by two ancient trees, an incense cedar and a live oak.

To the south of the path are the memorials to Joseph Blount Cheshire, and to his son, the Bishop of North Carolina. Farther down in the southwest corner are the graves of Bertram Brown, a beloved rector of the Church, and of Henry Toole Clark, first president of the William Dorsey Pender Chapter of the U. D. C. The large northwest quadrant is filled with elaborate Victorian memorials, and against the west wall of the cloister is a large plot of ivy with few markers. This was the servants’ plot, as attested by several stones with tender sentiments. In this quadrant are many interesting trees, Lebanon cedar, Chinese hawthorns, a magnolia macrophylla which sheds enormous leaves, osage orange, and ginko, and near All Saints’ Chapel, the children’s favorite, a buckeye.

ig Daddy Love is a five-piece band with a unique and natural blend of rock, roots and grass that they call ‘Appalachian Rock’. Above the mix, the lead vocals and acoustic guitar accompaniment of their principal songwriter, Scott Moss, command the listener’s attention and call for the harmonies that arise in response. Twin leads of Stratocaster riffs and soaring Allman-esque slide guitar on the one hand, and 5-string Scruggs / Fleck style banjo on the other-- like a typical Southern rock line-up, just replacing the second guitar with the banjo-punctuate and emphasize what Moss delivers. These contrasting voices are anchored by a rhythm section that is equally at home in a groove or driving the bus with country, swing, funk or straight ahead rock. Big Daddy Love’s high-energy performances, fueled by this combination of fiery vocals, striking instrumental dynamics that range from bombastic assaults to soothing grooves, have garnered them a strong, passionate following throughout their home region. Having only been together since the Summer of 2009, Big Daddy Love-- founded by high school friends from the rural mountains of Sparta, NC-- was just playing a handful of North Carolina markets when they made their first trip to Floyd in 2010, where they won the prestigious “Under The Radar” contest for the best new artist at the large, Virginia festival. The fresh, vital sound and energized performance of this new band simply blew people away, and with the fan-voted award under their belts, Big Daddy Love returned home and began to build their grass roots following in earnest.
5th Annual
Chuck Knucklehead Garrett Benefit
I was honored once again to be asked to be part of the Iron Order 5th Annual Chuck Knucklehead Garrett Benefit for ALS Research in Washington N.C. and once again it was a very successful event raising at last count over $8000 for ALS Research. Bands that performed, included: The Straight Line Band, David Lee Jones, Livewire, and Type Cast donated their time to entertain everyone. The music was great and started the night off with much joyous noise and comradeship. Then about midway in the night's activities a quiet man in a wheelchair took command of the room with a shaking yet determined voice. He began to speak of his and many others plight and his personal fight with ALS. He reached out to everyone in the room trying to covey the struggles he fights every day with these powerful words. "Hello, my name is Scott Barrow and I have ALS, also known as, Lou Gehrig's Disease. I was diagnosed at the age of 44 on February 22, 2013. When I went to the clinic and was told how long I had (three to five years) I was devastated with the news. Now I am 47, and I am bringing you a powerful message, for all my brothers and sisters that are alive or have died from this killer monster, I will be their voice." He did not put on his hood he uses in his ALS education videos at the event because it was too dark but I have him pictured (right) with it on from our meeting in the park. He described the hood that night and then began to speak again in a room now quiet as a church, everyone transfixed on him he looked down and stated, "I wear this over my face not because I am ashamed of ALS but we need a cure fast. We try to hide behind our fear because we know our time is short. I am “one” in millions held hostage by ALS, yes hostage, by a killer that is worldwide. Never think it can't happen to you, because it can, I thought the same thing."

‘We desperately need your help to donate because this is not just for us ALS sufferers, but it is your battle also, think about your children's future. Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS, every 90 minutes someone loses the battle"
Scott Barrow
Straight Line Band
Mr. Barrow went on to say that ALS affects everyone at different speeds but all suffer from voice change, weight loss, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, slurring of words, and eventually becoming paralyzed, breathing stops, and then death, Mr. Barrow spoke of what it is like to becoming dependent on others as ability to do the simplest daily tasks leaves, waiting in bed for strength to come so he can get in his chair, feeling and seeing changes in his hand legs and feet daily, and then he said "I know what it is like to go to sleep and look at my wife hoping I'll wake and see her smile on her face."

Folks I am a tough guy. I have been shot, stabbed, broke my neck, been hit with all verity of weapons found in bars and clubs, and had 7 back surgeries, I am HARD to rattle yet this man's words had this tough guy fighting back tears and the whole room was hanging on his every word. The power of his speech driving home the effects this monster that is ALS Mr. Barrow went on to thank the Iron Order Skeleton Krew for all they do for ALS every year and everyone at the event and every soul there stood applauded this brave fighter. When asked what he would say if he could say one thing to the world Mr. Scott Barrow responded, "Have Faith in God and that he will give man the ability to find a cure. We stand beside you Mr. Barrow as we would any brother or sister, this is but one reason why we do what we do, 4 living Behind Barz.

#ThisPlaceMatters As a part of National Preservation Month, the city has joined in the national campaign to encourage people to celebrate the places that are meaningful to them and to the local community in the “This Place Matters” Photo Campaign. Residents were asked to download the ‘This Place Matters’ sign from the city’s website, take photos at the places that matter most to you, and share photos and a story online with the hashtag #ThisPlaceMatters This monument was unveiled in 1917 and was paid for by Robert Henry Ricks. At that time each of the four pedestals had a statue. One was eventually destroyed by vandals, one is missing and the other two are in a city of Rocky Mount warehouse (one has some damage). Sadly this monument has gone many years with no statues which Mr. Ricks intended to be displayed. He died in 1920. The cost to completely restore (replace the first two mentioned, repair the damaged one and install all four) is approximately $40,000. Also, when Mr. Ricks' widow passed away her will specified that a flower garden be planted at the monument spelling her and Mr. Ricks' initials. Sadly this has never happened. The intent and wishes of the Ricks is not being honored. To those who may have an issue with this monument, I invite you to read the words of Mr. Ricks on the front of the monument: "To the Confederate soldiers of Nash County who in 1861 in obedience to the summons of their state freely offered their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in behalf of the cause of Constitutional liberty and self government and through four years so bore themselves in victory and defeat as to win the plaudits of the world and set an example of exalted and unselfish patriotism which will ever be an unfailing inspiration to all future generations of American citizens." #thisplacematters ~Craig Bone

The 9th Annual Cruisin for a Cure was awesome! We returned to the Roanoke Rapids Theater and had the biggest turnout ever! We had cars, trucks, mtorcycles, and tractors! We had High Rollers and Low Riders! The Roanoke Valley and surrounding communities really came out to support our efforts to raise money to help find a Cure! We began our fundraising journey in 1997 with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. As cancer was determined to devastate our family and friends, we wanted to do more. With this in mind we began a new adventure with Cruisin for a Cure car show. Not only are we fighting for a cure for cancer, but last year we added Alzheimer’s to the cause. Both have touched our family. This was our 9th year; it’s a lot of hard work but at the same time loads of fun. Our family and friends have really stepped up to support us. We can’t thank you enough for being there. The money we raise will one day help to find a Cure! Cruisin for a Cure would not be successful if it were not for our generous sponsors. This year’s Grand Prize was a customized Club Cart Precedent golf cart. It was given by Nick and Cindy DiMarino of Under the Sun golf carts, to commemorate the life of their daughter who was lost to cancer in May 2006. Please see flyer or visit our FB page to see a list of all our prize sponsors. We were blessed with over $18,000 worth of prizes! We would like to give a special thanks to Glover’s Welding for Event Shirts, Kentz Kustomz Cycles and Davis Body Shop for trophies. Also, special thanks to our 2016 artwork designers, Butch Oliver, Terry Davis, Neal Grissom, and Art by Michael’s. DJ Scott Taylor provided sound for our event. Thanks again to all our sponsors and to Behind Barz for all the great publicity and pictures and Wicked Lens Photography! Thanks to everyone who came out in support of this event. Hope to see you again next year! We are making big plans for the 10th year celebration.

Sprocket Apparel Recently I’ve been testing a new Tee-shirt designed by a biker, for bikers and I’m very impressed. I’ve worn my Sprocket Apparel RideDry shirt on my Harley, to the gym & while doing yard work on a typically hot, humid North Carolina day, and it outperforms cotton shirts by a wide margin. Let me give you the company’s press release information first. “The Sprocket Apparel RideDry Tee is a 100% Microdenier American made polyester Tee with moisture wicking technology that is light weight with a cotton-like feel that keeps you cool and dry in any weather condition. We use premium all American made fabrics and our shirts and caps are cut and sewn in North Carolina. The fact that we are making a 100% American made tee wasn’t enough for us so we had to make it the best ridding Tee on the market. We added a two inch longer back for extra coverage, as well as, a tag-less label for comfort and as enthusiasts and riders we didn’t want to forget about safety, our RideDry Tee’s are all screen printed with reflective ink so you can be seen whether you are riding, walking, hiking or whatever your passion may be. Our first production run are available in black and in sizes from S to XXL and come with a free decal.” After wearing my own Sprocket Apparel shirt just about everywhere I can honestly say that it is thinner, lighter & cooler to wear than any other shirt I own. You can pack more of these shirts in the same space than the heavier cotton shirts. These are not ‘compression’ type shirts that feel like a really weak guy is trying to hug you to death, these are comfortable shirts that look good even as casual wear. Currently these shirts are available with 5 different design logos, and each comes with a sharp reflective decal of various styles. The logos are reflective, and very subtle in daylight, but WOW, they really shine in the dark when a light hits them! I was so impressed with my large shirt that I bought a medium too, and thanks to being 2 inches longer in back, they STAY tucked in. I will be taking my 2 new shirts to South Carolina and testing them out with my son Dave on our dirt bikes. That story will appear in the next (Sep-Oct) issue of Behind Barz Magazine. These great shirts (and hats) can be ordered by going to sprocketapparel. com, and cost $35.00 each. That’s really not expensive for an American made shirt made from Premium Performance Fabric. Give them a try, I’m sure you will like them.
If you have a biker related product that you would like us to do a review of, please give us a call and we can tell you how that works. Not only is it in the print mag but it is also in the online mag and all of our social media outlets!

slayerfest 2016
Slayerfest is an annual event hosted by the Dragon Slayers MC, in Wake County NC. developed to provide for the charity of FFAAFF, “Fire Fighters Assisting Armed Forces Families”. The weekend began questionable due to a few showers on Friday evening although that did not stop any of the festivities. The evening started with music Johnny Folsom Four which rocked out some great Johnny Cash tunes and The Bill Dillard Project closing out the night. Saturday started with a great forecast and it didn’t let us down. The sun shined all day with plenty of events to be held. Diversity started the day with music and with much thanks to Freedom Biker Church, grilled chicken with all the sides helped everyone soak up some of the previous night’s enjoyments and filled us up to go through the day with our bellies full. There were bike games, tattoo contest, vendors of all sorts from jewelry, fashions and food to more live music. Switch played in the afternoon and Automag closed the Fest, Saturday night. If you didn’t enjoy at least some of the music, I don’t know what you listen to then. Our DJ kept everyone entertained between the bands as well with the announcements for the scheduled activities occurring next. We would like to thank everyone that came out to enjoy themselves and if you missed out this year, we look to seeing you at next year’s Slayerfest. This event is open to the public and all are invited and welcome to attend. In order to host such a great event, it takes the efforts of many others also and we would like to thank the following for all their assistance this year, in years past and hopefully into the years ahead. Behind Barz Motorcycle Mag, Savage Tattoo, Aversboro Sports Bar and Restaurant, Krafty’s Burgers, Tippet’s Mill, A-net’s Katch, R.A. Jeffries, Ray Price HD, Code Electric, our friends, families, supporters and everyone that make this event such a success for FFAAFF.

GOLDSBORO, NC
Polar Bear Run
It was a nice, clear, sunny day with a nice breeze blowing on the day that the Misplaced Souls M/C sponsored their Annual Polar Bear Ride on February 20, 2016. The funds they raised will go to support the Wayne Co. Boys and Girls Club in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Many bikers participated and all enjoyed the ride from Goldsboro to The Western Town in Johnston County. The Western Town is outside of Smithfield, North Carolina. Mr. Bill Drake, "Wild Bill" the owner, let all roam around his western town, (Shadowhawk). The Western Town is like a slice of the Old West, a rustic life-size replica of a frontier town complete with saloons, jail, cemetery, business offices, a chapel and even a bordello. Upon return from The Western Town the Misplaced Souls M/C served some wonderful chili, auctioned off door prizes, and a raffle. Many great prizes were raffled out including a FNS Hand Gun. A celebration to honor Mr. Al was also held with chocolate pecan pie and plain pecan pie for all to enjoy. What a great day, a great ride, time to honor a fellow biker, and serve the community. Thank you Misplaced Souls M/C for your dedication, devotion and determination to serve. Wildman and Wild women Engines hum, mufflers roar Run to the Old West and then back East Ride fast, ride hard Nothing like bikes on the road

Ride for the warriors Saturday May 7th, 2016 Cyclemax in Wilson, NC On the Saturday when it finally stopped raining, about 80 motorcycles left Hometown Harley-Davidson in Winterville, NC and rode to Cyclemax in Wilson for the American Legion Riders, Post 94 ‘Ride for the Warriors’ run. I met my good friend & CVMA brother Bob Reder at Cyclemax & we joined up with about another 20 riders for a total of over 100 bikes to our final destination at the Greene County Sports Complex in Snow Hill. Our ride was escorted by not one - not two - not three but FOUR NC State Highway Patrol motor officers on their SHP motorcycles. The ride was a breeze. We had clear skies, good roads and we went from Wilson to Snow Hill, nonstop without a hitch. A big thanks to our escorts, you’re the best!
By the time we arrived the food was ready and we had a choice between BBQ or chicken. The American Legion ladies did a super job of preparing & serving the food and even had some help from a Boy Scout or two. We no sooner ate our food then the man on the PA system started calling out winning door prize ticket numbers. This was a well planned, organized event and the American Legion Riders from Post 94 deserve our thanks for sponsoring a great ride. Thanks to those who put it on, and all those who attended. I was delighted to see some Combat Vets Motorcycle Association members there, and quite a few fellows from the Blue Knights International MC, too.
Ride For Life in Wayne Co. Frankye Mcginnis Watson and Brogden United Methodist Church in Dudley, North Carolina have done it again. On March 19, 2016 they hosted a Relay for Life Ride. Escorted by the Wayne County Sheriff Officers they went the width and breadth of Wayne County. A good ole Southern Country Breakfast with eggs, sausage, biscuits, grits, and fresh hot coffee was cooked by the fine gentlemen chefs from Brogden United Methodist Church. It was a great way to start the ride. Many door prizes had been donated so everyone left with a prize for their support. A raffle was held as well as 50/50 tickets were sold. Clouds were overhead and Ms. Frankye in her opening remarks stated that “Rain or Shine we will ride for Relay for Life as Cancer does not stop when it rains so why should we.” These are powerful words to encourage all to go on no matter what. Cancer is a silent killer; cancer is a quiet stalker; a robber of life. The pipes roared to give support and funds to help bring cancer to an end. Thank-you Frankye for all the years you have been helping and motivating us to Ride for Life. story: Lad D photos: Moe
