Maybe the weather is beginning to break...sure hope so. It has been a long time coming! Lots of events popping up all around us. Check out the EVENTZ section of the mag for events going on in your area. Soon, every weekend will be jam packed with events and happenings to partake in. As I mentioned last time, my trike is near completion. It has now gone to paint, so I will have a full story next issue. By that time it will be back from Curtis at Classic Air and Graphics and we will have time to get some nice shots of it out on the road. Starting on April Fools Day - Thursday, 1 April 2010, we will be starting a series of Bike Nights (circuit). Every month the Bike Night will be at a different location. The Kick-Off will be at Bonedaddy’s in Raleigh. Bonedaddy’s has got quite a bit lined up for the first Bike Night! We have lots of sponsors on board with us and many nice give-aways. Every Bike Night we will give away Prize Packz with several items from our various sponsors. At the FINALE in September, everyone who attends at least five of the six BIke Nights and has their card stamped will have a chance at a Super Prize Pack...details on our website. Go to www.behindbarz.com for all the details, event map, list of prizes, vendor list, etc. We will be having some the HOTTEST Bike Nights around! Check the website often for sponsor, vendor and prize info added every week. You don’t have to wonder where the next one will be because they are already set in stone...see pages 14-15. Each Bike Night destination has it’s own little flair or personality! Please send encouragement to our troops thoughout the year...We support Give2theTroops...do you? Also, please pray that our troops come home safe. Please support the advertisers that support Behind Barz. Without them and you we would not be the most popular motorcycle magazine in Eastern N.C. The Ole’ Country Store & Oscar’s Pub “The Ole’ Country Store” and “Oscar’s Pub” began as a Sunday afternoon conversation (along with plenty of beer) between Rusty Lane, a business manager and life long biker and his better half Cheryl Jeffris, a true Italian with southern values and a love of the open roads. A biker and an Italian chic with a father named Rocco’_ _ _. Need we say more?!? With the help of the couple’s sons, The Ole’ Country Store and Oscar’s Pub are now a true visit to the past. Rusty and Cheryl strongly believe in providing the best customer service and highest quality products available. Oscar’s Pub, located in what use to be the “feed room” of the 1948 General Store, is a small place with a “welcome home” atmosphere that opens to a large private patio area with plenty of room to have a cold one and rest those riding cramps. The Ole’ Country Store and Oscar’s Pub are located at Hwy 903 and Hull Road in Snow Hill North Carolina or coming in on Hwy 13 (either direction) turn beside the Fast Break convenience store and go approximately ¼ mile. 252-747-6566

SIMC On January 16th, 2010, the only unknown was the promise of rain from the weather lingering in the air, but rain or shine the party would go on...and party they did. The gates opened at 1:00, and the chops were cooking while the “Ol’ Ladies” came together and provided all the trimmings. The skies opened up and the temperature rose to near 60 degrees (a perfect day for a SIMC party). You could hear the roar of pipes in the distance! Approximately 200 people from Virginia to Wilmington and all points in between, including family & friends, came to celebrate “an anniversary party to remember”. Door prizes were given away, along with a flat screen TV/DVD player. A home theatre system raffle was also held. The winner of the 50/50 donated the money back to the club (Thank you). Terry from Sacred Flames Tattoos was there putting on the ink, while Wanda was doing the piercing. Tommy Redd and Boogie Chillins rocked everyone into the night. The rain held off until early Sunday morning allowing everyone a safe return home. Southern Iron wishes to thank everyone for their support and look forward to more good times ahead! Be sure to look out for the dates of the next SIMC party! Happy Anniversary Southern Iron! Stay strong! Story by Ol’ Ladies of SIMC

WHERE HAVE ALL THE BIKE BUILDERS GONE ?

19

Throughout the tour season last year I was asked this question on multiple occasions and for good reason “WHERE HAVE ALL THE BIKE BUILDERS GONE ?”. There has certainly been a noticeable decrease in the number of custom bike builders. Why? The answer is not as obvious as you might think. The economic climate is certainly a factor and people can no longer afford to spend $40,000 to $100,000 on a custom bike. The home equity loan is no longer an option and banks are no longer loaning money to buy luxury items. Lets face it people are very unsure about their future compared to five years ago. As a general rule there are two types of bike builders: Guys like Arlen Ness, Dave Perewitz or Jesse James who build bikes for a living and have created multi faceted revenue steams from merchandise and aftermarket components. And the guys who built bikes as a hobby in their garage, maintained a regular gig to keep cash flow rolling in, but during the boom quit their regular jobs because they were selling their bikes for big bucks. These are the guys who didn’t understand the bubble would eventually burst. They had no back up plan. Harley-Davidson was not oblivious to the fact that custom bikes were becoming increasingly popular and took aim at this market. Harley began to produce bikes with radical designs, more chrome and wider tires. Suddenly enthusiasts could now buy a custom styled bike less expensively, with financing, a warranty and no hassles with registration. During our 2009 tour season I actually did shows where people commented to me that I was only bike builder there. Let me state for the record that Strip Club Choppers is not a custom bike shop. While I did design and build the bike you see at my booth those bikes were built as promotional tools and to display our line of components. Although I love building bikes for my personal use my business model was planned around merchandise and lifestyle. I always tell people that sex sells and there is no warranty on a t-shirt. So when you are at a show this year and you see a guy that built his own scooter stop and appreciate the workmanship, it means a lot. Custom bikes are about pride not about making a quick buck. It was a tuff lesson that many learned the hard way. You can visit us this month at Daytona Bike Week on US 1 across from the Iron Horse Saloon. The Ride for the Cure story & photos: Peggy Canevari

On April 15, 2002, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It just so happens that I am a mamographer and was very well aware that there was an abnormality on the x-ray. On that day I paid my taxes and faced my mortality. When a person hears that they have “cancer”, the very first thing that comes to mind is, “Am I going to die? Is this going to kill me?” I was one of the fortunate ones. Having had my screening mammogram done on schedule, my breast cancer was diagnosed early. After surgery and treatment I was able to return to a fairly normal life. As always, the three “F’s” (faith, family and friends) sustained me. In April of 2007 (my five year anniversary as a breast cancer survivor), I decided to do something special to give back. It was really important to me to, in some small way, give back and give thanks for the blessings that had been bestowed upon me and my family. My son, Sean Canevari (now owner of C & C Performance Cycles), my husband, Roger (owner and lover of his own Harley), had the idea of a motorcycle rally to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Thus… The Ride for the Cure was born!! And, as they say, the rest is history.

Breast cancer knows no boundaries. It has no regard to age, gender, socio-economic status or geographical location. An estimated 215,000 women and over 2,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Close to 25% of these will die of the disease. I think it’s safe to say that all of us either know someone who has battled this disease or have been touched by it in some way. Isn’t that a horrible realization? With the help of family, friends and our wonderful sponsors, Ride for the Cure has raised over $25,000 in the last three years and donated 100% of the net proceeds to benefit breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. This year we’ve chosen the Pretty in Pink Foundation to be the beneficiary of our efforts. This organization helps women in our area who have already been diagnosed with breast cancer and are either uninsured or have limited health insurance benefits. These are women that don’t qualify for government funded or assisted programs such as Medicare.

BEHIND BARZ PETZ

Our donation will help these patients get the quality care and treatment they deserve and would otherwise not be able to afford. Having had a new battle with cancer this past year, I am acutely aware of the astronomical cost for cancer treatment and surgery. I can’t imagine having no insurance or not enough insurance to pay for this. The goal of Pretty in Pink is “to insure that quality, life-saving medical treatment, regardless of the ability to pay, is available to breast cancer patients who need it most.” Ride for the Cure is a wonderful time to come together in support of a great cause, raise tons of money and have a good time doing what you love to do best….RIDE!!!

We’ve all known that real ugly girl that gets pushed to the back of the room or the last to be picked for the prom…….Flash ahead 15 years when you’re at your class reunion...that long legged, stone cold fox walks in and you hear her name and then you pass out. That’s the story with the Betty bike. This 1999 Electra Glide, formerly known as “Black Betty” was picked up in a trade several years ago. She spent her first few years sleeping outside and had been drug through the mud a couple times because her last owner was an all weather rider. She had been involved in a t-bone wreck between two brothers. She also had lots of scrapes and scars to show for her past.

After taking her in, she sat in the back of the garage and shop and became a parts chasing bike. Like the gal mentioned earlier her outer appearances didn’t show what she had inside. She has Crane Cams, adjustable pushrods, S&S super E carb with Yost power tube and a Harley stage 2 upgrade. Neadless to say, she could run like a race horse. So, with that kind of a heartbeat what she needed was a new dress, which is just what the guys at Knuckleheadz Kustoms got her.

well by Wildfire Custom Coatings, adding a little more blue to the old girl. We all know how girls like new shoes, so a new set of wheels and tires from CoastalMoto, complete with polished rotors were added to slow her down a bit. The wild colors were sprayed by T.J.Willis of Eastern Auto Body, which is our in house paint facility. Lastly, every girl needs some bling, so she got a new full set of Barnett Chromalite cables, Arlen Ness mirrors, stretched tank filler by H-D and lastly, a set of Betty Levers donated by a customer, Wayne Walters. Those were powdercoated black. So, the next time you see a chubby girl with skinned knees, go help her up, you might be surprised with the ride you wind up with.

So, you got that ugly girl hanging around you’re place? Contact The Krew at Knuckleheadz Kustomz to give the gal a makeover. We’ll make her the ride of your life!

Scott Grady...Owner of Knuckleheadz Kustomz

Betty was fitted with a 4” extended fender and stretched bag extensions by Bad Dad , a set of 29 “ apes manufactured inhouse and powdercoated. All of the aging chromed parts were treated to powdercoating as

Riding On Through ~by Sorez The Scribe

Hail stinging my face Like razor blades Wind howling like a wolf During a full moon Temp just breaking thirty Cagers blind deaf and dumb To what is going on Outside their warmed up cages Keeping my distance Gearing down so as not to Lock her up and slide Damn it feels good To be out there riding Other day a few inches of snow I will admit I did go down But not hard at all nothing That a few whacks Of a hammer couldn’t fix The chance ya take When ya take that chance Leather is worn and Some rust on my ride But any day now It’ll be springtime!

David Simon rides his first motorcycle on Saturday, January 9th, in the bitter, cold temperatures of the low 30’s, just a few days after his Chemotherapy treatment. David is all smiles and optimism. David went from a below average student at Fike High School in Wilson NC to an above average student. He was diagnosed last summer with cancer and has developed numerous tumors throughout his body including his liver and brain. He continues to go to school between treatments and strives to do well on a daily basis. He even brings his work with him at the hospital so he doesn’t fall behind. He received a Character Education Award for his Perseverance and Courage from the Wilson County Board of Education. He received his first Renaissance Gold Card but due to an unexpected hospital visit he could not go with his classmates on their Renaissance trip. A special trip to Carmike Cinemas movie theater in Wilson was planned for him, his family, and 8 of his friends at a later date to celebrate his efforts. Barry Wood, of the Wilson Police Department, heard about David’s and his family and wanted to help. He contacted Gordan Deno, and his wife Debbie along with the Christian Motorcycle Association to help put a ride together to help David and his family. A total of about 54 bikes came to honor this young man and his courage. David himself rode the 59 mile ride in the cold. As Barry put it, if David can undergo treatment and still have a smile on his face, we can suffer the cold to honor him. Over $1700 was donated along with a gift certificate worth $1250 to a local Dentist office and was presented to David and his family at Wilson Praise and Worship church. His sister Rosa was in tears recalling the blessings her brother and their family have received! Rosa stated that so many times the Dr’s have told them that David had hours, or days left but he is still here and that God has a purpose for him. That is what keeps them all going! Barry wishes to thank all who helped with this event. His wife Lori, Chris Jones with the Wilson Police Department, all CMA members, Gordon Deno, Debbie Deno, and Wilson Praise and Worship Church for helping with this event. And the Wilson County S.O. for providing the escort.

David

David Barry

A special thank you to David’s family, his sister Rosa and David himself. David’s courage and optimism show us that we should always be looking ahead to what’s over the horizon. Anyone who would like to help David and his family can contact Barry Wood at 252-292-0525!

BB Testimonials - We asked some of our advertisers about the popularity of BB Motorcycle Magazine in their shops, what their customers thought about it and the kind of response they were getting with their advertising dollars. Each issue we will feature a couple of them, so you can hear it straight from the horses mouth!

This is what they had to say...

Greetings from Pastor Thumper.

I pray this article finds all with bikes running and your fellowship gatherings, or party gatherings full. I have a couple of things I would like to share with you all this time around. As you know by now, Thumper thinks very highly of our biker family. When there is something to do it is accomplished and we really do not care what others say or think of the venture ahead of us; not like some organizations or groups that let one or two people stop prayer in schools or say you can’t use the name God in public areas. Oh and don’t pray for our military or a hand full of people will shut down a church or protest because we care for our soldiers. Bikers stand strong and proud. Let me tell you guys, God is proud of you for pushing forward in your work and your beliefs as bikers and not letting one or two people say what a thousand bikers can do. Ride hard, ride loud and ride free. Be blessed in our Saviors name of Jesus Christ. As they say, a fifteen thousand dollar bike and a pair of jeans don’t make you a biker. But I’m thankful for those bikers that are the real deal. Whether a Christian biker or a club member of one of our many M/C I pray safety, prosperity, and many miles of riding for my brothers and sisters this year. May your bike stay strong and loud. When people see you riding the highways and byways I pray they see honor and pride in the biker world. And may people learn from your respect, love and brotherhood for one another as they see you in the roadways. People gain knowledge by many methods; reading, watching, and by participating, so be an educator this year. Invite people to all your parties and events with open arms; let’s show the public what bikers are all about. Behind Bars magazine is a great means for people to see our world through our eyes. So let us visit and support the advertisers in this magazine and give them a big thanks. The second thing I wanted to share with you is a personal thing that I went through recently with my mom. She is in her late 80s and her physical condition is not so good. Mom had to be taken to the hospital for heart problems. I called a pastor of hers at her request, and then I called a biker friend of mine. After we arrived at the emergency room that morning, we set in for a lengthy day. Many tests were performed that day and the ER staff was great. Within an hour a nurse came to my mom’s treatment room and said I had a visitor. When the doors opened there stood a sister in Christ from my biker team asking me, “What can I do for your mom”? and “Do you need anything”? Realize this person did not have to come by. Hey, hang on there’s more! Later on that day the Ward secretary came in and said I believe you have some visiters in the waiting room. When I came to the door you

guessed it, leathers, colors, jeans, and tattoos, some of my biker family! First thing out of their mouth was “what can we do for your mom“, and “do you need anything”? This really touched my heart. Bikers going out of their way just to check on a brother’s mom that they do not even know. At the end of the day just before mom was placed in the hospital, I was called to the visitor’s door for a final time. I was greeted by a biker that was a Preacher. Again, this man had places to be but took time to stop and check on my mom. What a feeling of joy and love I felt as the biker community came by during that day to see that all was well and needs were met. The pastor my mom wanted me to call did come by three days later as she had a short stay in the hospital. Since that time my mom has been placed in a nursing home and is doing well and loves it there. She is OK for now but time will tell. I have placed her in God’s hands.

Fat Saturday

AT Collier Harley-Davidson story & photos: Doobie

Collier Harley-Davidson had their Customer Appreciation Day and Fat Saturday celebration on Sat., February 20th. It was a great day for Fat Saturday! The weather was just about right for riding...in the mid fifties. This was the first really nice day that we have had in quite some time. Rudy Evans cooked up some of his mean Crawdads - 30 lbs. of the mouth watering fellas. They were cooked to perfection! People came from all over NC and parts of VA to sample Rudy’s dishes and take advantage of Collier’s Customer Apprecaition Day! His secret recipe consists of Andouille sausage - 15 lbs. went into the 70 qts. of Gumbo that he prepaired. Not only that, but 25 lbs. of shrimp and 4 gallons of maters. There were other ingrediants but too many to list here. Rudy’s Shrimp Gumbo was outta this world! Not only were great deals top be had in the store but they also provided two huge King Cakes that had babies hidden inside. Anyone who found one of the ten babies could get 15% off any item in the store. They sold raffle tickets for a chance to win an H-D clock, value $200 and an H-D mirror, value $85.

Rudy pours the 25 lbs. of shrimp into the Gumbo while his son-in-law, Derrick stirs the pot.

Tracy served up tea for the crowd!

Lined up out the door for Rudy’s Shrimp Gumbo!

Joni Evans with her Mardi Gra Bike

Clock & mirror giveaway!

Donna & Rudy

Just a few of Collier’s Customers that came in and enjoyed the food, fellowship and deals.
