nc packs4 patriots Support our local heroes

Thank you so much for your continued support! Our troups are still on their mission! Our volunteers are dedicated and work long hours, lifting boxes, and performing tasks to ensure our mission is successful. However, we are all older then we were 10 years ago, and bodies are sometimes a bit more tired and worn! We would like to invite anyone interested in joining our team. If you can volunteer even one or two days each month, it would help. We need clerical help, and help with sorting, organizing and other tasks. Please message us for information.

Idea: We have crafters working on holiday crafts for our care packages. If you are not a “crafty” person, but would like to help, you can donate a gift card to any craft store (JoAnn’s, Michael’s, etc) and one of our crafters would be happy to purchase necessary supplies and make the items!

Mail the gift card to NCPacks4Patriots, 249E Third St Ayden NC 28513. Or order felt pieces and iron on transfers online and have shipped to us. We like these felt wall hangings because they are lightweight, unbreakable, and easy to pack!

tarheel traveler Scott Mason The Tar Heel Traveler takes us to fascinating places across the great state of North Carolina and into the lives of memorable characters every week. Mr. Mason came by for a visit with me to talk about the magazine and bikers and what they both mean to me. Not sure I am the making of a memorable character but Scott Mason sure has a way with words, so I am really looking forward to it being aired on WRAL TV. It should air in early November. Not sure of an exact date yet.

Myrtle beach harley-davidson Holds fundraiser in conjunction with ongoing community service campaign.

Myrtle Beach, SC -

Sarah George, APR Marketing & Events Director

Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson along with the help of many community partners and local motorcyclists’ has made a donation of $2,000 to Street Reach Ministries, A Program of New Directions of Horry County. The funds were raised during Bike Nights held throughout the summer at the dealership located in Myrtle Beach which culminated with the Best of the Bikes Bike Show held Saturday, August 16th. This fundraiser is just one of several held throughout the year to benefit local non-profit organizations. To date eleven fundraisers held in 2014 have garnered over $8,000 in funds to charities such as The Veterans Welcome Home & Resource Center, North Strand Helping Hand, The Horry County Chapter of the Red Cross, The Combat Vets Association and the MDA. Events have also collected items such as toys for children who have lost their homes to fire, food for local food banks and undergarments for our homeless veterans. “We have an ongoing initiative between both our main dealership in Myrtle Beach and our North Myrtle Beach Location, The Harley Shop At The Beach, to hold fundraisers in conjunction with motorcycling events,” explained Sarah George, Marketing Director at Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson. “We have a running total displayed in our store to help encourage participation from our customers and overall our goal is to provide safe and fun events for riders while taking the opportunity to give back to our community.”

(l-r) Mary Jo Rogers, Chairman of the Board, New Directions of Horry County; Jenn DeLuca, Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson Event Coordinator; and Kathy Jenkins, Executive Director New Directions of Horry County We just wrapped up a few events including a 9-11 Memorial Ride and our Weekly Bike Nights at the House of Blues. More events are also scheduled during the upcoming months such as the 5th Annual Myrtle Beach HarleyDavidson Toy Run slated for December 6, 2014 all of which have and will benefit local charities. “It’s our goal to raise over $15,000 this year at our events,” concluded George. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson has also contributed raffle prizes and sponsorship funds to numerous events in the community that have collectively raised more than $900,000 for local non-profits. Sponsors for the Best of Bikes Competition included Steelhorse Law, A-1 Wireless, Conway National Bank, Coastal Carolina University Athletics, Palmetto Moonshine, Legends In Concert, UTZ, ROCK 107, Medieval Times and Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka. Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson attributes much of their event success to community partners who help offset the cost of events and provide additional sponsorship funds. “We have a great network of businesses that are always ready to help out with food, entertainment and prizes for events in order to provide more for the organizations we are supporting.”

Living A

Motor Maid

LIFE

By Diane Dixon, SC Motor Maid Director It seems not so long ago that I bought my first street bike. In November of 2009 I decided to give myself a great birthday present, my first street bike! After years of riding dirt bikes and four wheelers, I decided to dwell into the life of a lady biker. All I can say is that five years later, boy I wish I had started riding streets bikes a long time ago! I was very fortunate to meet a young lady who was a Motor Maid within the first few months of riding. She told me of all the adventures and fun times she had belonging to an all-women’s riding motorcycle organization, so I had to join! Now over 100,000 miles later I am enjoying riding more than ever and love seeing more and more ladies riding their own bikes. There is no way to describe to someone why you love to ride a motorcycle. If they have to ask, there is no way they can understand the feelings of freedom, independence and adventure riding a motorcycle brings. The thrill of planning a cross country adventure and making your way through states and countryside you have never dreamed of, there’s just not enough words to really describe that feeling. The sisterhood and brotherhood is a very strong bond among motorcycle riders. No matter where you travel, other riders will stop and chat with you like old time friends. Need assistance on the road? Never fear because a motorcycle rider will stop and help you. Looking for the best place to eat in a town? Look for where the motorcycles are parked. Guaranteed good food, prices and of course great people to meet! My advice to anyone, if you have had that true deep desire to ride a motorcycle, then don’t put it off! There are many motorcycle courses available at dealerships and schools to teach you how to ride safely. The endless years of friendship, fun and adventure await you.

your Health Behind Barz

Question… What is one of the best ways to stop the transmission of disease??? Answer…Hand washing. Hand washing is like a “do-it-yourself” vaccine—it involves five simple and effective steps (think Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse, Dry) you can take so you can stay healthy. There are two ways to clean your hands. Wash your hands with soap and water. This is the preferred way and the most effective. Or you may cleanse your hands by rubbing them with an alcohol-based formulation. This is a fast way to cleanse your hands when soap and water is not available. Some times to remember to wash your hands are: Before, during, and after preparing food Before eating food Before and after caring for someone who is sick Before and after treating a cut or wound After using the toilet After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste After handling pet food or pet treats After touching garbage Now in closing for those who love trivia according to the CDC, 1,000,000,000,000 germs can live in 1 gram of poop; that is poop about the weight of a paper clip. Wash your hands to stay healthy and remain Behind Barz! Ride Safe, Be Blessed, Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas! Deborah Alston R.N.

August 16 marked the date of the 5th Annual Wounded Warrior Bug Run. A 70 mile motorcycle charity ride to raise money for the Wounded Warriors at Fort Bragg NC. All monies raised will be donated directly to the WTB (Warrior Transition Battalion) at the Battalion Center and distributed to the Wounded Warrior in the time of need, more specifically during the Holiday of Christmas. The Bug Run is a fun run with a $50 Grand Prize to the rider who happens to hit a bug on or nearest to the center of a bull’s-eye target placed on his or head light. This year’s event drew a crowd of approximately 75 motorcycles and many of those with passengers from the local area and many of those from the various local Veterans Organizations who all showed up in support of the event. Those organizations include Rolling Thunder®Inc, NC6, Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion Riders, Combat Vets Motorcycle Assn, Freedom Riders, Christian Motorcycle Assn, Patriot Warriors MC, Lords of Loyalty MC, Second Brigade MC and many more. The event was held at “Johnny’s On Main” in Franklinton NC which is a brand new restaurant and bar located on Main Street. For the effort Johnny deeply discounted his menu and drink prices and graciously covered the $50 Grand Prize for our Bug Catcher Winner. Bob Barron of Zebulon was the Grand Prize Winner for landing a Bug closest to the target on his headlight. A 50/50 Raffle was held and the Winner was Hal Delooze of the American Legion Riders post 116 Fuquay to which he donated a large portion of his winning back to the effort and then another organizational project. Ride for the cure There were bikers with a cause riding through Eastern North Carolina on Saturday, Oct 11th. Over a hundred sixty motorcyclists participated in the 8th annual Ride for the Cure, a breast cancer benefit ride hosted by Eastern Radiologists. The organization has offices in Greenville, Washington and Kinston, where the riders made stops on their 100 mile journey, also making a stop in Winterville at Hometown Harley Davidson. The Greenville location had free breast screenings by appointment as well as door prizes, food, raffles, a 50/50 drawing, and a live remote with WRNS 95.1 FM. There was also live music provided by Mace N Dixon as the riders returned. When the riders all come out in the procession it is an awesome sight. There were even spectators across the street sitting out waiting to experience the sight and sounds of all the motorcycle riders heading out. Ride for the Cure is held to raise money for early detection programs /breast cancer screenings and support for patients during treatment with the money going to Pitt, Beaufort and Lenoir counties. “It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we want to shed light on trying to prevent the disease,” Dr. John Herlong said. “It’s important for women 40 and older to come in for mammograms annually, which saves lives.” At the Kinston Eastern Radiologists location, staff members had food and drinks for the motorcyclists who came for a period of rest. Receptionist Leytricia Harris said she supported the event for the cause and its effect toward those close to her. “I’ve had family and friends who have dealt with breast cancer,” Harris said. “I didn’t volunteer just because I work here — it’s all for a great cause.” Greenville resident George Hayward said he has had family members who have dealt with cancer, including his wife. He said he liked the turnout of the event and number of motorcycles on the road. “We might have around 150 riders (this year),” Hayward said. “It’s all for a good cause.” For New Bern resident Mark Suhrie, he said the event was emotional because of the loss of his wife’s friend, Barbara Crawford, last year. “She passed away from leukemia last year and I was one of the pallbearers at her funeral,” Suhrie said. “Since then, I’ve supported and participated in every cancer awareness event that I could.” Bath resident Harold Davis had a little color added in his ride with his wife, Patsy, spray-painting his beard pink for the occasion. Patsy had her husband spray-paint her hair pink as well. “When we ride by, people can see the pink and it’s another way for folks to identify the cause for the event,” she said. Harold Davis said he was glad to be a part of the event. “I’ve lost family to cancer, so anything I can do to help raise awareness, I will,” he said. Tanya Dixon, site manager for the Washington location and who headed up the event, said this ride had the larges number of riders yet. She expressed her deep appreciation to the bikers who participate. “ Many times bikers carry a “tough” persona but I must say the people I have met throughout this event are the most caring, compassionate, kind people I have ever met,” Dixon said. “On behalf of myself and the staff of Eastern Radiologists, we thank you tremendously for you support through the years and we story & photos: Addie Best look forward to seeing you next year!” Addie Best

CVMA 15-3

1st Annual Benefit Poker Run

Here is an outline of how our 1st Annual Poker Run played out....seen from my eyes. Tapeworm, Atomic, Little Miss & Randall stayed overnight on Fri. with Dave & me so we could all get an early start on Sat. morning. Dave bought us all dinner @ San Jose on Fri. night, and got us all biscuits from Flo's diner on Sat. morning. Thanks Dave. The generosity of the Motorcycle Community humbles me. We sat up @ RMHD, and they carried a table outside for us, and gave us 3 big boxes of donuts. The whole time we were there, folks came up to us, apologized for not being able to participate in the ride, and gave us unbelievable amounts of money, just as donations. Ace & SuperDave (my son) went & set up @ Doug Sauls' BBQ in Nashville, and The Biker Barn in Spring Hope. Atomic, Tapeworm & I pulled the plug on the RMHD site @ 11:00. We didn't have the turnout we hoped for, but as you'll see, we did pretty darned good $$$$-wise for our 1st time up to bat on an event. Thanks to our State Rep., Iceman, for making it an official CVMA Sanctioned Event. Atomic left after the last riders out to collect Ace & SuperDave. Tapeworm & I lit out for Brewer's Cycles in Henderson. Tapeworm set up a table for the 4th card @ Brewer's. Yank & Nancy set up at the VFW in Henderson by themselves & had things ready to go when we all arrived. Yank, Nancy & I went to Walmart in Henderson & procured plenty of food, which they prepared @ the VFW. Everything was delicious! Thanks to both of them for a great job. Tapeworm held the Mulligan dart-board event, we gave out a lot of door prizes, many provided by Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine and a collectible silver walking-liberty coin donated by our CC, Yankee. We did the 50-50 drawing, netting a cool $70.00 so $35.00 went to Randall. Randall then tallied up the score cards. Randy Mellott from 15-6 got the worst hand prize, a fork bag from The Biker Barn & his wife, Sue, got the best hand and a beautiful new helmet from Brewer's Cycles. Our very first sanctioned event brought in $507.00, enabling Randall to buy some much needed medicine. He expressed his gratitude to everyone involved. We made some new friends in Mari & Eric DelDuco from Apex. Be sure to Friend Request them on Facebook. Things we learned: Bikers in general & especially CVMA folks are amazingly generous & compassionate people. When doing the door prizes I should have set the winning tickets aside until everyone got a prize, then put all the tickets back in the jar & started over until all the door prizes were gone. Folks need a place to sit. Everyone could have gone into the VFW & ate, but we all stayed outside. Tapeworm, Atomic & I kept things moving right along so everyone could get back on the long road home without too much delay. Our chapter really needs to support other CVMA chapters in their events. Tapeworm, Atomic, & I counted up the ca$h & gave Randall the proceeds so he can get his medicines without having to wait for a Chapter check to clear. The cornhole game with the CVMA logo provided by Willie 'Reno' Collins was auctioned off at the end. The winning bid of $201.00 came from Randy & Sue Mellott, of 15-6. Perry Bauer 'Speedracer' also donated $100 from 15-6.

22

A final smile: Randall admired SuperDave's I support the CVMA shirt, and wanted one of his own. So Dave literally gave Randall the shirt off his back.

NC State HOG Rally from Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson "Boy, let me tell you what." The NC State HOG Rally made an overnight stop in Rocky Mount on Friday, September 5, 2014 and Rocky Mount Harley Davidson hosted an event unlike anything the area has ever seen. The day started with Bubba Blackwell the Harley-Davidson world record jumper also known as “The American Dare Devil”. Bubba is the only official Harley-Davidson daredevil to bring back the nostalgia and human drama of the stunt jumping made popular by the great Evil Knievel. The stunt show and jump were performed at Davenport Autopark where Bubba jumped a line of GMC trucks to an atonished crowd. You can see the footage on his Facebook page. As the sun descended it offered an arena for the Las Vegas style show which started with a tribute to all our American Armed Forces and paved the way for the opening act, American Hitmen. In 2013, the American Hitmen made it through not one, not two, but THREE elimination rounds on Season 8 of the popular America's Got Talent! After these guys rocked it out it was time to give-a-way the Hardee's & Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. The winner was Debora Cherry. The Charlie Daniels Band then took the stage and played 90 minutes of what Charlie Daniels Calls CDB music. For decades, he has steadfastly refused to label his music as anything other than “CDB music,” which okay by us. The crowd went wild when Charlie played his closing song, The Devil Went Down to Georgie. Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson and the fine folks of the city of Rocky Mount proved that we know how to entertain a crowd with a life style event that includes first class entertainment and Southern Charm. The riders of the NC State HOG Rally riders will remember Rocky Mount.

* We (Behind Barz Motorcycle Magazine) would like to add to this info that we were also a big part of the promotion of this event as a (Platinum Level) sponsor. photos: Angel Eyes

Never Judge A Bo

Gypsy Labecka Madrigal Bikers are judged all the time simply because of the way they dress, their tattoos, maybe even because of their long hair and beards and certainly because they ride a motorcycle. It’s a fact of life that people sum up other people simply by the way they look. It’s not right. But if people can just look a little deeper, especially with bikers, they will find bikers give more to society than any other group. Many would give the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help someone else...and they do! We are all writing our own books...the past, the present and the future is in the works. The dust jacket may be a little dirty, grungy or completely torn off but it’s what’s inside that counts! That old adage is true... Never, Ever Judge A Book By It’s Cover!

ook By It's Cover Life is a magical, wild, chaotic, beautiful, unplanned adventure. There is something great and liberating about hitting the open road, letting your hair and all your worries blow in the wind....in search of something new. Labecka Madrigal, aka Gypsy, was born in Ft. Stewart, Georgia. She has lived all over the USA, due to her Father being in the Army. This is how she earned her road name Gypsy. That rambling blood still courses through her veins, as she continues to travel from place to place in search of something new. Her home roots remain in WV. and Ky. where most of her family still resides. Oh yes! Gypsy is a good ole country girl too. She has lived in Mexico and speaks, writes and reads, fluently in Spanish. Gypsy took the long scenic route to get to where she is today. She worked in tobacco from the age of 11, dropped out of High school in the 11th grade, has done factory work and waitress-ed among other jobs. She has even worked as a migrant farm worker, picking everything from tomatoes in Va. to oranges in Fl. She received her GED @ the age of 32 and found a good paying job, but when the economy crashed, she was laid off. This inspired her to return to school at the age of 37 and work towards her LPN and then towards her RN degree, which she accomplished, all while raising her two sons alone as a single parent. Her oldest son is also a Nurse and her youngest is a truck driver. She also has a 10 yr old grandson and a 4yr old granddaughter, both of whom she cherishes dearly. Gypsy is currently working as a Clinical Nurse Manager at a psychiatric facility. Gypsy has always enjoyed the Biker life. She has been riding since her younger days. She is one of the Founding Members of the Gypsy Renegades WMC. Not many days go by without her riding and if by chance she is unable to ride, she says she feels deprived of the wind. We all have a scenic route that we have taken to get to where we are today. We all have our scars, (some that show and some that don’t), tattoos, and our own road map that depicts that scenic route we have taken. Take the time to learn about ones scenic route in life before you pass judgment on them. Don’t judge a person by the clothes they wear or the tattoos or piercings they have. Open up that book and look inside. You just might be surprised at what you might learn.

Been There, S

My Purpaws

By: Chewy (Biker Dog)

be much more defensive and to always look for the escape route in case something happens. On our way home, something happened that caught us by surprise.

I attended more events than I planned, but one event was more memorable than the rest. Actually, we missed the event because the map software took us to the wrong location – about 25 miles off-target. After realizing we would miss the Flags for Fallen Military event honoring Austin Monk, Specialist, US Army, I decided to take my driver the looooong way home from Cameron to Kipling. When we connected with NC-87 and started heading towards Spring Lake, we saw blue lights in the median. We noticed Thomas Sanders and his white truck. We rode until we could safely turn around. When we saw Thomas, my driver gave him hand signals to ask if he was OK. He replied with a thumbs up and OK, and pointed to the side of his truck. From what we saw, it looked like the van that was in the grassy median in front of him may have side-swiped Thomas’ truck. Knowing that Thomas was OK, we headed home. Since we were pointed back towards Sanford, we decided to take NC-27, which is a two-lane road. Now, when you ride with a human, you get used to cagers trying to take pictures and drifting into your lane. It sometimes seems like getting the picture is more important than our lives, but it has taught my driver and me to

After we were on NC-27 for a short while, we were motoring up a slight hill. Coming over the hill in front of us was a gray pickup. Then we saw a white mustang pull out from behind the pickup to pass. It was a no passing zone for both lanes! He was in our lane and heading towards us fast. My driver hit the brakes and the front of the bike dived down hard and I found myself shoved against my driver’s back. I don’t know how he did it, but he threw the bike to the right without laying it down. He sezzed it was luck. He put the bike between the white line and the grass. There was only about a 12 to 18 inches of pavement there, and we were slowing down while the mustang stayed in our lane. I think the pickup hit his brakes before they got to us, but the mustang stayed in our lane and missed hitting us by a few inches. My driver swears he saw the mustang’s mirror fly under our fairing, but I think that was an illusion because of the speed everything happened. My driver rolled the bike onto the grass and came to a stop. I could hear him sez “thank you Lord … thank you Lord … thank you Lord.” He sezzed it so many times that I didn’t have enough paws to count how many times he sezzed it. My driver turned around in the saddle and he asks me, he sez, “Chew-Chew, iz yooz alrights?”

Sniffed That

wse in Life Arriving for Flags for Fallen Military.

I leaned forward to give him a lick under the chin and my driver lost his balance. He dropped my Harley! Can you believe that? He throws the bike around on the pavement, and he drops it when we’re stopped! He unbuckled me from my seat, and I watched him try to get the bike up. I watched him and I sezzed to him, I sez, “Why iz youz trying to lift the saddle with youz butt?” He took his helmet off and put it on the pavement shoulder behind the bike. He went back to trying to get the bike back up. He scrunched his big ol’ butt under the side of the saddle and was grunting loud. At first, I thought maybe he was passin’ gas. Maybe he did! Then I thought maybe he wanted to play so I came to him with my tail waggin’ and gave him a “woof!” I was still in my t-shirt, so I was walkin’ clumsy. A few bikers rolled by, but no one stopped. Don’t the helmet on the ground mean anything anymore, or is that all old-school stuff that no one knows? A couple of months ago, we stopped to check on a moped rider on the side of the road. He had a small trailer attached to his moped. It was a blessing because he is the Pastor of a nearby church. His moped stopped running and he called his wife to get him. I supervised my driver in helping the Pastor move his moped and trailer off the road. We left after he pet me and assured me that he was OK, and that his wife would be arriving in a few minutes. You know, sometimes it’s rewarding to just stop and sniff the people.

Anyway … back to us on the side of NC-27. A few cagers drove by, but no one stopped to help. My driver finally got the bike upright. He cranked it up and moved it to the edge of the pavement. He made sure the kickstand was down. I don’t think I had the energy to supervise my driver if he dropped it again. He put me back in the saddle, and we rolled home. We gots a short look at the mustang driver, but he was moving so fast we couldn’t get the license number – he looked like a young man with dark hair. Maybe a teenager in a hurry? Regardless, that kid almost made my mom a widow. The driver in the pick-up didn’t stop either. On the way home, my driver and I thought about how close we came to getting hit. God gave me a purpawse to be here with my driver. What if we were hit? At the speed the mustang was rolling, we could have been seriously injured, or even killed. What if we were in a group? Would that mustang have taken out some bikers? What if we were in a cage? Would we have been run off the road because it’s wider than our Harley? This wasn’t our first close call, and it probably won’t be our last.

Been There, Sniffed That I’m not sure where doggies go when they die, because there is nothing in The Bible about dogs going to Heaven. My driver and I hope there’s a place like the Rainbow Bridge so I can wait for him, but that’s not in The Bible either. My driver knows he will be going to Heaven. How does he know? Because Jesus is his Lord and Savior. Jesus is also my mom’s Lord and Savior. My driver isn’t pawfect, but he prays and talks to God a lot and asks God to forgive him for his mistakes and to grant him wisdom. We’ve been to lots and lots of funerals over the years, and we’ve heard people say things like “He was a good person, so he’s in Heaven” or “We know he’s in Heaven because he died for his country.” There’s only one road to Heaven, and that’s with Jesus. Being a good person and dying for your country, family and friends is honorable, but that’s not the path to Heaven. The only way to Heaven is through God’s Son, Jesus. If you’re not sure where you’re going when you die, talk to a pastor at a Bible-based church. Biker churches are being planted around the country and some churches are becoming biker-friendly. North Carolina is blessed to have a number of biker churches, including Freedom Biker Church. If you don’t want to talk with a Pastor, talk with one of the brothers or sisters in the Christian Motorcyclists Association, Bikers for Christ and the many Christian biker organizations. You never know when a cager will pull out in front of you, or rear-end you, or drift into your lane.

Quilts of Valor Blue Star mom Catherine Roberts began Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) from her sewing room in Seaford, Delaware. Her son Nathanael’s year-long deployment to Iraq provided the initial inspiration, and her desire to see that returning warriors were welcomed home with the love and gratitude they deserved provided the rest. Catherine hit upon the idea that linking quilt-toppers with machine-quilters in a national effort could achieve her goal of covering all returning service men and women touched by war. These wartime quilts, called Quilts of Valor (QOVs) would be tangible reminders of appreciation and gratitude. Since 2003, QOVF has become a national grassroots community service effort, connecting the homefront with our wounded combat warriors and veterans. QOVs are stitched with love, prayers, and healing thoughts. Troops who have been touched by war are awarded this token of appreciation that unequivocally says, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor.” A Quilt of Valor is a generous lap-sized quilt (minimum of 55 X 65) made by a quilttopper (the piecer) of quality fabrics and beautifully quilted by a longarmer. After it has been bound, washed, labeled and wrapped in a presentation case, it is ready to be awarded. Quilts are awarded at many different levels: they may go to military hospitals where Chaplains award them to service members; there may be awards of QOV’s to entire service units returning from deployments; they may be awarded at VA’s or awarded individually. But no matter how a Quilt of Valor is given, the impact it delivers is unequivocal. As one recipient said “My quilt isn’t another military medal to be placed in a box and sit on my shelf. I was moved to tears.” – SSgt RC, US Army, Iraq ‘05

Quilting to Honor and Comfort Service Members and Veterans QOVF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization

So the answer to “Why Quilts of Valor?” is this: It is a wonderful form of National Service and anyone can do it! Just how much of an impact has the Quilts of Valor Foundation made? As of August 2014, there have been over 100,000 quilts awarded to service members/veterans.

~ Top 8 Safety Tips For Bikers ~ By David Henson Managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys.

Every time you get on a motorcycle, your life is literally in your hands, and those of motorists around you. But you can’t control what other people do…you can only control your own actions, and hope that’s enough to keep you safe. My law firm handles many motorcycle injury cases, but we wish we didn’t have to see so much pain from what should be a fun experience. To help ensure that you make it home safely after your next ride, here are tips offered by experts, physicians, and bikers:

********************************************************* 1. “Goldilocks” your bike. Find a bike that fits you perfectly— not too big or powerful, not too small or weak, but just right. It’s easy to get carried away with engine or performance specs without really understanding how well the bike fits your body or riding style. When shopping for a new bike, make sure you know your needs. Will you be going on lots of long-distance rides, or mainly using it to commute to work? Highway riding will require a larger engine to keep up with traffic. Also, make sure the bike fits—you should be able to have both feet flat on the ground when resting, with handlebars and controls in easy reach. 2. Ride According to your skill. There are differences when you ride around town, through a cityscape, or on an Interstate. If you’re a new rider, don’t be so quick to challenge yourself that you end up in trouble. Check out courses by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (http://www.msf-usa.org). Ride with people of similar skill levels, and don’t let advanced riders goad you into doing anything outside your comfort zone. 3. Upgrade to ABS (antilock braking system). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) notes that the rate of fatal crashes is 31 percent lower for motorcycles equipped with optional ABS than for the same models without ABS. Antilock brakes let both new and experienced riders stop more quickly—and with more control—on wet and dry surfaces alike. ABS is standard on many high-end motorcycles, and is an option for most new bikes. And if you love your current bike, check to see if it is possible to retrofit it with ABS. 4. Teach your passengers. A passenger who has never been on a motorcycle before has no idea how they move, how they feel, or what you expect. If your passenger leans left when you expect him or her to lean right, the imbalance of weight could cause you to lose control. Worse, a jittery passenger could scream halfway into a perfectly executed turn, distracting you just enough to become unsafe. For newbies, practice riding in a parking lot or quiet street. Don’t hit the road until you both feel confident.

38

5. Wear a helmet. I know there’s a lot of controversy about this, but just about all safety experts strongly recommend wearing a helmet. I agree. While a helmet won’t always save a life, riding without one increases your risk of a fatal head injury by about 40%. Of course, you only have the option in those states without helmet laws. When purchasing a helmet, look for those that are labeled as “DOT Approved” to make sure that it meets safety standards. 6. Be visible. The days of the black-clad biker are over. We’ve learned from bicyclists that motorists are more likely to avoid hitting you if they can actually see you. Always keep your headlight on, even during the day. Buy a helmet with reflective material, and wear bright or reflective clothing. You can always add reflective tape or material to your current clothing to make you more visible at night. 7. Sit out bad weather. It’s more dangerous for cars to be out in a heavy rain, and they have four points of traction, and windshield wipers to help motorists see the road. Motorcycles only have two points of traction… and a faceful of rain is more than just a visibility problem—it’s distracting and painful. If the weather forecast calls for heavy rain, snow, or ice, stay dry at home and save that ride for a clearer day. 8. No distracted driving. There has been a lot of attention given to the risks of distracted driving in cars, but the same is true for motorcycles. Bikers need to have 360-degree awareness to allow you react more quickly in an emergency. You’ll lose that focus if you’re looking for the perfect playlist on your iPod. Even talking on a hands-free cell phone has been shown to be about as dangerous as drunk driving, and texting is even more dangerous. Experts recommend removing all distraction temptations by stowing phones and other devices until you arrive at your destination.

hello my happy riders from the mind of big ed

Hello you happy people!! I have no doubt in my mind that the saying is true. ( friends come and go, but biker friends are for life ). I’ve been on this crazy planet for over 38 years and I’ve had friends that I’ve had around me most of my life, but time has worked it’s powers and life moves on. Relationships, bills, kids, moving place to place, work...all this takes it’s toll on friendships. You can’t help but lose track of old friends. BUT, biker friends, you just don’t loose track of them, cause they find you...If there is a cold beer in your fridge, they are close by. Someone has to drink it for you and laugh at you. If you have two wheels on a trailer, they are close by to laugh at you. If you give a middle finger to a passing car, that turns out to be an unmarked cop car they (biker friends) are close by and they laugh at you. These are the duties of a biker friend! Which, we don’t call them biker friends ‘cause they are closer then that...we call them family! You don’t have to be blood related to be family. All my bros are my brothers and each one’s wife or girlfriend is my sister. This is a bond that only those who have rode side by side can understand. ‘Cause they are the only ones who truly understand you, who have your back, who is there when the rain hits you in the face and you feel the wetness surround your underware...they, too, know how you feel! Which brings me to this topic...that Biker Friends are for life! Me and my (biker) family lost a brother back in Oct.6th of 2011. His name was Jerry Jarman (Daytona). He was killed by a drunk driver while at a stop light. He was a kind soul and a person you couldn’t help but like. I could go on and on of the stories that are told by my (biker) family of the wonderful memories this great man left behind.. Even tho our brother is gone, we still hold true to a (biker friend is for life). We choose to take this day of Oct. 6th to be what we are...family. This separates your everyday friends. Because this famliy love we have for each other goes beyond the hand shakes and drinking a few beers on the front porch of your house.

Its a bond that only a biker family can understand.. and before I go.. I want to type the poem one of my sister’s wrote for our lost brother and the ride that our family does to remember his life... One Open Space.. Today we left one space open Our minds and hearts full of emotion. The skies were beautiful blue As we rode all we thought of was you. Our hearts have an open space We all would give anything to see your face. To hear you laugh and be USSMC proud but for now we have two wheels on the ground. but for now we leave a space for you our dear friend. One of the original 10.. by Jennifer Tanner ( Yoohoo ) Cherish that brother and sister you have in a biker family ... ‘cause a biker family is for life.... and I will be seeing you Behind Barz!!!

Man and dog to take record-breaking, 65,000-mile motorcycle ride for fallen soldiers. A Mixed Martial Arts expert and a Chihuahua riding a Harley is a recipe to turn heads on any given day. But Adam Sandoval and his dog, Scooter, plan to make it do a lot more than that: Raising money for fallen soldiers and breaking three world records for starters. Over the coming year, Sandoval and his Chihuahua, Scooter, plan to ride to every Harley Davidson dealership in the lower 48 states to raise money for fallen soldiers. Bringing with them only what fits on the bike and the will to succeed, the pair begins their odyssey November 10th – the birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps – from Fort Myers Harley Davidson. From there, they will begin a trek that will take them to over 690 Harley Davidson dealerships visiting each of the lower 48 states, logging an estimated 65,000 miles. Along the way, other riders are free to join the ride for the day or as long as they would like. The successful ride will set a new world record for most miles in one country, the largest group ride and the longest charity ride in history. Sandoval planned the ride he’s calling ScootinAmerica to give back. Having personal regrets about not serving in the military and having enjoyed personal success as an entrepreneur, Sandoval has a special passion for the families of fallen soldiers. Sandoval is financing the effort himself and with support from sponsors who want to contribute along the way . The next year of his life will be spent on the road raising money and awareness for our country’s veterans. Sandoval and Scooter moved to FL 3 years ago from Green Bay, WI to enjoy riding their motorcycle year round. This ride definitely fits that bill. You will be able to track ScootinAmerica and their adventures live on Facebook via videos and pictures being posted daily. Followers can see their page to get up to date routes, and charitable donation information and locations.

All the new and used bike inventory was at the N. Myrtle Beach location. “Cruise the Coast Ride” was Friday Oct. 3rd. Reg. was at Springmaid Pier where the scenic, self-led ride started along the Grand Strand Coastline, with stops at 4 different piers with terrific ocean views. The ride ended at The DECK at The House of Blues where Sailor Jerry and Bras Across the water entertained the rest of the evening. All the usual happening spots seemed to be jumping most days, SBB Pooh’s & Beaver Bar...their overall numbers seemed to be down, though. We ate at a couple of our favorite eating spots. Hamburger Joe’s of Surfside Beach was one of them and they have the best burgers in S.C., bar none! We ate shrimp at Greg’s Cabana Bar & Grill and downed a few beers! We had loads of fun and can’t wait for the Spring when we head back for Cruisin” the Coast Spring Bike Rally!!!
