Genesis

CHAPTER 1 The Beginning And The Generation Of All The Creatures 1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (First of all, and before that any creature was, God made heaven and earth of nothing) 2And the earth was without form and void, (As a rude lump and without any creature in it) and darkness was upon the deep (or the waters), and the Spirit of God (He maintained this confused heap by his "secret CHAPTER 1

power") moved upon the waters (Hebrew, face of the deep). 3Then God said, Let there be light And there was light. (The light was made before either Sun or Moon was created: therefore we must not attribute that to the creatures that are God’ s instruments, which only appertain to God): *Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the world was ordained by the word of God, so that the things which we see, are not made of things which did appear. 4And God saw the light that it CHAPTER 1

Genesis

was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. (Hebrew, between the light, and between the darkness) 5And God called the Light, Day, and the darkness he called Night. So the evening and the morning were the FIRST day. (Hebrew, so was the evening, so was the morning) 6Again God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters. (Or, spreading over, and air. heaven be gathered into one place, and nurture for man and beast covered CHAPTER 1

all that is above us) *Psalm 33:6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. 7Then God made the firmament, and separated the waters, which were under the firmament, from the waters which were above the firmament and it was so. (As the sea and rivers, from those waters that are in the clouds, which are upheld by God’ s power, so they won't overwhelm the world): *Psalms 148:4 Praise ye him heavens of heavens, and waters, that be above the CHAPTER 1

heavens. 8And God called the firmament, Heaven (The firmament). So the evening and the morning were the second day. 9God said again, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. *Psalms 33:7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as upon an heap, and layeth up the depths in his treasures. *Psalms 89:11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: thou hast laid the foundation of the world, and all that therein is. *Job 38:4 W here CHAPTER 1

Genesis

wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 10And God called the dry land, Earth, and he called the gathering together of the waters, Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11Then God said, Let the earth bud forth the bud of the herb, that seedeth seed, the fruitful

tree, which

beareth fruit

according to his kind, which hath his seed in itself upon the earth: and it was so. (So that we see it is the only power of God’ s word that makes the earth CHAPTER 1

fruitful, which else naturally is barren) 12And the earth brought forth the bud of the herb, that seedeth seed according to his kind, also the tree that beareth fruit, which hath his seed in itself according to his kind: and God saw that it was good. (This sentence is so often repeated, to signify that God made all his creatures to serve to his glory, and for the profit of man: but for sin they were accursed, yet to the elect, by Christ they are restored, and serve to their wealth) 13So the evening and the CHAPTER 1

morning were the THIRD day. 14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven (By the lights he means the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars), to separate the day from the night (W hich is the artifcial day, from the Sun rising, to the going down), and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years (Of things appertaining to natural and political orders and seasons) *Psalm. 136:7 W hich made great lights: for his mercy endureth forever: *Deuteronmy 4:19 And lest thou CHAPTER 1

lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun and the moon and the stars with all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath distributed to all people under the whole heaven. 15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16God then made two great lights (To wit, the Sun and the Moon, and here he speaks, as man judges by his eye: for else the Moon is less than the planet CHAPTER 1

Genesis

Saturn): the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made also the stars. (To give it suffcient light, as instruments appointed for the same, to serve to man’ s use) 17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven, to shine upon the earth (As the sea and rivers, from those waters that are in the clouds, which are upheld by God’ s power, lest they should overwhelm the world) 18And to rule in the day, and in the night, and to separate the light from the darkness: and God saw CHAPTER 1

that it was good. *Jerermy 31:35 Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light to the day, and the courses of the moon and of the stars for a light to the night, which breaketh the sea, when the waves thereof roar: his Name is the Lord of hosts) 19So the evening and the morning were the FOURTH day. 20Afterward God said, Let the waters bring forth in abundance every creeping thing (As fish and worms which slide, swim, or creep) that hath life (Hebrew, the soul of life): and CHAPTER 1

Genesis

let the fowl fly upon the earth in the open firmament (Hebrew, face of the firmament) of the heaven. 21Then God created the great whales, and everything living and moving, which the waters brought forth in abundance according to their kind, and every feathered fowl according to his kind (The fish and fowls had both one beginning, wherein we see that nature gives place to God’ s will, forasmuch as the one sort is made to fly about in the air, and the other to swim beneath in the water): and God CHAPTER 1

saw that it was good. 22Then God blessed them, saying, Bring forth fruit and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the fowl multiply in the earth. (That is, by the virtue of his word he gave power to his creatures to engender) 23So the evening and the morning were the FIFTH day. 24Moreover God said, Let the earth bring forth the living thing (Hebrew, soul of life) according to his kind, cattle, and that which creepeth, and the beast of the earth according to his kind, and it was so. 26Furthermore God said, (God commanded the water and the earth to bring forth other creatures: but of man he said, Let US make: signifying, that God takes counsel with his wisdom and virtue, purposing to make an excellent work above all the rest of his creation) Let US make man IN OUR CHAPTER 1

IMAGE according to OUR LIKENESS (This image and likeness of God in man is expounded) and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heaven, and over the beasts, and over all the earth, and over everything that creepeth and moveth on the earth. *Ephesians 4:24 And put on the new man, which after God is created (AFTER THE IMAGE OF GOD) unto righteousness (The effect and end of the new creation), and true holiness. Bring forth fruit, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heaven, and over every beast CHAPTER 1

that moveth upon the earth. 29And God said, Behold, I have given unto you (God’ s great liberality to man, takes away all excuses of his ingratitude) every herb bearing seed, which is upon all the earth, and every tree, wherein is the fruit of a tree bearing seed: that shall be to you for meat *Genesis 9:3 Everything that moveth and liveth, shall be meat for you: as the green herb, have I given you all things. 30Likewise to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the heaven, and to CHAPTER 1

Genesis

everything that moveth upon the earth, which hath life in itself, every green herb shall be for meat, and it was so. 31And God saw all that he had made, and lo, it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the SIXTH day.
