Genesis

CHAPTER 2 1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. (That is, the innumerable abundance of creatures in heaven and earth) 2For in the SEVENTH day God ended his work which he CHAPTER 2

had made, and the SEVENTH day he rested (For he had now finished his creation, but his providence still watches over his creatures, and governs them) from all his work, which he had made. *Exodus 20:11 For in six days the Lord made the CHAPTER 2

heaven and the earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: therefore the Lord blessed the SEVENTH day, and hallowed it. *Exodus 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever: for in six days the CHAPTER 2

Lord made the heaven and the earth, and in the SEVENTH day he ceased and rested. *Deuteronmy 5:14 But the SEVENTH day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: thou shalt not do any work therein, thou, nor thy son, nor CHAPTER 2

manservant, nor thy maid, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, neither any of thy cattle, nor the stranger that is within thy gates: that thy manservant and thy maid may rest as well as thou. *Hebrews 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on CHAPTER 2

this wise, And God did rest the SEVENTH day from all his works. 3So God blessed the SEVENTH day, and sanctifed it (Appointed it to be kept holy, that man might consider the excellency of his works and God"s CHAPTER 2

because that in it he had rested from all his work, which God created and made. 4These are the generations (Or the original and beginning) of the heavens and of the earth, when they were created, in the day, that the Lord God made the earth and CHAPTER 2

the heavens, 5And every plant of the field (Or, tree) before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field, before it grew, for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth (God only opens the heavens and shuts them, he sends drought and CHAPTER 2

rain according to his good pleasure), neither was there a man to till the ground, *Genesis 21:15 And when the water of the bottle was spent, she cast the child under a certain tree. 6But a mist went up from the earth, and watered all the earth. 7Then CHAPTER 2

Genesis

God made the firmament, and separated the waters (As the sea and rivers, from those waters that are in the clouds, which are upheld by God’ s power, lest they should overwhelm the world), which were under the firmament, from the waters which CHAPTER 2

Genesis

were above the firmament: and it was so. *Psalms 148:4 Praise ye him heavens of heavens, and waters, that be above the heavens. 8And God called the firmament, Heaven (The firmament). So the evening and the morning were the second day. 9God CHAPTER 2

said again, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. *Psalms 33:7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as upon an heap, and layeth up the depths in his treasures. *Psalms CHAPTER 2

89:11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: thou hast laid the foundation of the world, and all that therein is. *Job 38:4 W here wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 10And God called CHAPTER 2

the dry land, Earth, and he called the gathering together of the waters, Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11Then God said, Let the earth bud forth the bud ofthe herb, that seedeth seed, the fruitful tree, which beareth fruit according to his kind, CHAPTER 2

which hath his seed in itself upon the earth (So that we see it is the only power of God’ s word that makes the earth fruitful, which else naturally is barren): and it was so. 12And the earth brought forth the bud of the herb, that seedeth seed according to CHAPTER 2

that

creatures to serve in his glory, and to the profit of man: but for sin they CHAPTER 2

were accursed, yet to the elect, by Christ they are restored, and serve to their wealth) saw that it was good. 13And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same compasseth the whole land of Cush (Or Ethiopia). 14And the name of the [third] river CHAPTER 2

is Hiddekel (Or Tigris): this goeth toward the East side of Ashshur (Or Assyria): and the fourth river is Parah (Or Euphrates) 15Then the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden, that he might dress it (God would not have CHAPTER 2

man idle, though as yet there was no need to labor) and keep it. 16And the Lord God commanded the man (So that man might know there was a sovereign Lord, to whom he owed obedience) (like a father to his son, every house has rules), saying, Thou CHAPTER 2

shalt eat freely (Hebrew, eating thou shalt eat of) of every tree of the garden,

death he means the separation from man and God, who is our life line and chief felicity: and also that our disobedience is the cause thereof) 18Also the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be himself alone: I will make him an help meet CHAPTER 2

for him (Hebrew, before him) 19So the Lord God formed of the earth every beast of the field, and every fowl of the heaven, and brought them unto the man to see how he would call them: for howsoever the man named the living creature, so CHAPTER 2

Genesis

was the name thereof. 20The man therefore gave names unto all cattle, and to the fowl of the heaven, and to every beast of the field: but for Adam found he not an helper meet for him. 21Therefore the Lord God caused an heavy sleep to fall upon CHAPTER 2

Genesis

the man, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh instead thereof. (Hebrew, built of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof). 22And the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man, made he a woman, and CHAPTER 2

Genesis

brought her to the man. 23Then the man (Or, Manness) said, This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called woman, because she was taken out of the man. (Because she cometh of man: for in Hebrew Ish is man, and Ishah CHAPTER 2

our wives, than otherwise we are bound to show to our parents) *Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they twain

that he which coupleth himself with an harlot, is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. *Mark 10:7 For this cause shall man leave his father and mother, and cleave unto his wife. *Matthew 19:5 And said, For this cause, shall a man leave CHAPTER 2
