CHAPTER 3 1N ow the serpent w as more subtle than any beast of the field, w hich the Lord God had made: (As Satan can changed himself into an Angel of light, so he abused the wisdom of the serpent to deceive man) and he said to the w oman, Y ea, 1

CHAPTER 3


GENESIS

hath God indeed said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? (God suffered Satan to make the serpent his instrument and to speak in him) 2And the w oman said unto the serpent, W e may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden. 3But of the fruit of CHAPTER 3

the tree w hich is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Y e shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4Then the serpent said to the w oman, Y e shall not die at all, (This is Satan’ s chiefest subtlety, to cause us not to fear God’ s threats)(Hebrew, CHAPTER 3

w ife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God (The sinful conscience fears God’ s presence) among the trees of the garden. 9But the Lord God called to the man, and said unto him, W here art thou? 10W ho said, I heard thy voice in CHAPTER 3

the garden and w as afraid: because I w as naked (His hypocrisy appears in that he hid the cause of his nakedness, which was the transgression of Gods commandment), therefore I hid myself. 11And he said, W ho told thee that thou w ast naked? Hast thou eaten of CHAPTER 3

the tree w hereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12Then the man said, The w oman w hich thou gavest to be w ith me (His wickedness and lack of true repentance appeares in this that he burdened God with his fault, because he had given him a wife), CHAPTER 3

she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13And the Lord God said to the w oman, W hy hast thou done this? And the w oman said, The serpent beguiled me (Instead of confessing her sin, she increased it by accusing the serpent), and I did eat. 14Then the Lord CHAPTER 3


GENESIS

God said to the serpent (He asked the reason of Adam and his wife, because he would bring them to repentance, but he Did not ask the serpent, because he would show him no mercy), Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field: CHAPTER 3

upon thy belly shalt thou go (As a vile and contemptible beast) *Isaiah 65:25 and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. 15I w ill also put enmity (worst kind of hatred) betw een thee (He chiefy means Satan, by whose motion and craftly serpent deceived the woman) and the w oman, CHAPTER 3


GENESIS

and betw een thy seed and her seed. He shall break thine head (That is, the power of sin and death), and thou shalt bruise his heel (Satan shall sting Christ and his members, but not overpower them). 16Unto the w oman he said, I w ill greatly increase thy CHAPTER 3


GENESIS

sorrow s (The Lord comforted Adam by the promise of the blessed seed, and also punished the body for the sin which the soul should have been punished for; that the spirit having conceived hope of forgiveness, might live by faith), and thy conceptions. In sorrow shalt thou bring forth CHAPTER 3

shall it bring forth to thee, and thou shalt eat the herb of the field. 19I n the sw eat of thy face shalt thou eat bread till thou return to the earth: for out of it w ast thou taken, because thou art dust, and to dust shalt thou return. 20And (the man CHAPTER 3

called his wife’ s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living) 21Unto Adam also and to his w ife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. 22And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil. And CHAPTER 3

now lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever (By this decision he reproaches Adam’ s misery, whereas he was fallen by ambition. Adam deprived of life, lost also the sign thereof) 23Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the CHAPTER 3


GENESIS

garden of Eden, to till the earth, w hence he w as taken. 24Thus he cast out the man, and at the East side of the garden of Eden he set the Cherubims, and the blade of a sw ord shaken, to keep the w ay of the tree of life. CHAPTER 3
