It’s nestled in the Municipality of Central Elgin, just minutes away from St. Thomas and a short drive to the picturesque villages of Port Stanley and historic Sparta. We have two upcoming sites in the works for Union. The first, Union on Sunset, is located across Bostwick Road where it meets Sunset Drive. Additionally, we have another site near the St. Thomas Golf and Country Club up the road on Sunset. Both subdivisions are in the early stages, and though we don’t have updated information yet, we wanted to share the latest with you.
We’ve received numerous inquiries about Union, and we want you to know that we’re diligently planning and preparing for an array of amazing opportunities for you to call one of these sites your home. the Sales team
Our community is in dire need of affordable housing now more than ever. St. Thomas, like many other Canadian communities, is grappling with a housing crisis, facing a shortage of safe and affordable options. Rental prices have surged, making it increasingly difficult for individuals and families to find suitable homes.
The waitlist for subsidized housing has reached an alarming 1100 households, resulting in an estimated 5-10 year wait for assistance. Shockingly, on any given night, approximately 100 youth experience homelessness in St. Thomas-Elgin. Poverty affects one in five people in our community, forcing them to make unimaginable choices between food and rent. Just imagine being a parent faced with such a decision.
Sadly, the lack of safe and affordable housing leaves women and youth vulnerable to experiencing violence and instability. This is why we are reaching out to you, seeking your support for an extraordinary endeavor: the creation of a community that provides affordable housing, life stabilization supports, and a welcoming environment for youth, women, families, and men.
The new YWCA affordable housing community is more than just a place to live; it signifies a new beginning. In 2021 alone, the YWCA provided housing for 78 individuals. With Project Tiny Hope, we aim to nearly double that number. According to our community’s By Names List, 55 youth and 134 adults experienced homelessness in 2021.
Will you join us in bringing hope and brightness to lives that desperately need it? Your support can make a significant difference in our community. Together, we can create a brighter future for all.

Recipe of the Month
Greek-Marinated Shrimp Skewers with Creamy Lemon-Dill Sauce
Shrimp Skewers Ingredients
¼ cup plus 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp. smoked paprika
1 ½ tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. dried fennel seeds
1 tsp. dried cumin seeds
¾ tsp. salt
Zest of 1 lemon (reserve juice for Lemon-Dill Sauce)
1 lb. raw peeled and deveined shrimp
1 medium zucchini, sliced into ½-inch thick coins, and then sliced in half to create half moons
1 small red onion, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
Lemon-Dill Sauce
¼ cup plain whole-milk Greek yogurt (sub sour cream)
2 Tbsp. mayonnaise
1 ½ Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
1 Tbsp. finely chopped fresh dill
2 tsp. finely chopped chives
½ tsp. garlic powder
¼ tsp. each salt and black pepper
Directions
1. In a large bowl, combine olive oil, smoked paprika, oregano, garlic powder, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, salt, and lemon zest; mix to combine. Add shrimp and toss to coat. Let sit for 30 minutes at room temperature, or up to 5 hours refrigerated.
2. Meanwhile, prepare Lemon-Dill Sauce by combining Greek yogurt (or sour cream), mayonnaise, lemon juice, dill, chives, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl; stir with a whisk until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use.
3. Thread marinated shrimp onto 8 metal or wood skewers, alternating with zucchini and chunks of red onion. (Aim for 3 shrimp per skewer.) Brush any remaining marinade over the zucchini and red onion. Place skewers on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
4. Heat the grill to medium-high heat. Arrange skewers directly on the grill grates. Cook, turning only once, until the veggies and shrimp are lightly charred, about 5 to 6 minutes total. Use a set of tongs to remove skewers from grill and transfer to a clean platter or parchment-lined baking sheet.
Decor Trends
Making décor and furniture selections for your home can be a difficult decision. When decorating a new home, we are often faced with the desire to get all new furniture that is on trend with a particular look. And while you may be happy with your purchases in the short term you might grow tired of them as the trends change. A good rule of thumb is to select more traditional pieces for your major furniture purchases and incorporate trendy textiles and smaller decorative items that you can easily change later. A classic is a classic for a reason because it can stand the test of time. Another idea when decorating your home is to incorporate vintage pieces into your space. Giving an old piece new life in your space will add a one-of-a-kind style to your house, personalized to your own unique style. It is a piece that tells a story and is a greener option over buying new and let’s face it, a vintage piece will probably also outlast anything brand new from a big box store since it has already withstood 50-100 years plus, depending on the piece. In the end whatever you purchase, our suggestion is to take your time, don’t just rush in into hasty purchases you might regret later. Cultivate your pieces and make your house a home, honed to the needs and desires of yourself and your family, not the latest trends.
A message from our President
We Don’t Just Build for Humans
At Doug Tarry Homes we “Don’t Just Build for Humans”. That’s a bold statement, one that could well have environmentalists decrying the loss of farmland. And they would have a point. It is a delicate balance between creating homes and communities, and maintaining responsible stewardship of the land we build on.
So why make the statement? Because it is important for us to recognize that we must serve a dual purpose as developers. Yes, we need to build those very communities where people - our customers, friends, and neighbors - will establish their homes, but we must never forget that plants and animals share this space with us.
You see, when we build a community, the local wildlife will find its way into and through it, whether we plan for this or ignore it. Here’s where a big part of the Doug Tarry Difference stands out from other developers. We naturalize areas such as trails, storm ponds, even portions of our green spaces. This is typically done using plant species that will attract pollinators such as birds, bees, and butterflies.
When we look at our trail network and green spaces, we consider how animals will migrate through and even live in our communities. If you are walking in an area such as Lake Margaret, look up; you just might come across an osprey family nesting on one of the platforms that my brother Greg constructed over the years.
What I find both interesting and extremely satisfying is that people within our communities also love these spaces. Getting back to nature and taking in the sights and smells of flowers in bloom, watching squirrels, chipmunks, frogs, birds, and other animals thrive in these enhanced habitats, are things we can all enjoy. This is part of our company’s DNA, to always leave the campsite better than we found it, something that was ingrained into the thinking of my siblings and I by our father, Doug Tarry Sr., on the many family canoe trips we took to Algonquin.
The next time you’re out for a walk in your community, take a moment to observe the nature that we’re providing and consider what you can do in your own yard to help us enhance what we give to the wildlife that share our land. And before you cut down the “weeds” behind your home, ask yourself what plant, animal or insect is this “weed” providing food or shelter to. It may well be there on purpose. Most importantly, take time to enjoy our shared trails and green spaces. It’s a great boost for your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
