BC Seniors ready to compete

ON YOUR MARK Seniors on the track get ready and set to go at the BC Senior Games in Surrey in 2012.

The BC Seniors Games is an annual multisport competition that celebrates active and healthy seniors aged 55+, and Kamloops is playing host to them for the second time this August. In this, the 26th year of the Games, nearly 4000 seniors aged 55 to over 90 years old are expected to compete in 25 sports and activities.

The community is invited to come out and cheer participants on as they compete in events such as tennis, ice hockey, bowling and dragon boat racing, among many more. The Games will be held on Tuesday, August 20 to Saturday August 24, 2013 at venues throughout the city.

Downtown Artwalk launches with a party The Downtown Artwalk Launch Party will kick off on August 1 at The Art We Are and there are lots of treats in store to tickle your creative fancy! From 5:00pm to 8:00pm enjoy live performances by local musicians, including Alamagokus and Keenan Bryce Wilcox, watch live art demonstrations at the top of each hour and meet and mingle with local artists.

The Artwalk itself begins the following day on August 2 and runs through to September 3. The Kamloops Downtown Artwalk brings together the artistic community, the business community, and the general public, with work by local artists being displayed at Downtown retailers. Sumi-Ink Extravaganza Arnica Artist Run Centre invites you to “graffiti” their walls! That’s right, you read correctly. During regular open hours between August 6 and 10 they want you to come into their Vault gallery space, pick up a brush, and “graffiti” the walls! Following the art movement known as Sumi Ink that started in Los Angeles, 2005, Arnica wants you to come leave your mark in what will end up a massive collage. Water Music on the Wanda Sue in Riverside Park The Chamber Musicians of Kamloops and The Brandenburg Orchestra come together as a thirty-piece band -- consisting of strings, trumpets, flutes, oboe, French horn, bassoon, and keyboard -- will recreate the first performance of Handel’s famous Water Music, which took place almost 300 years ago in 1717 on the River Thames. The evening will include a screening of several award-winning, short films from around the world that have been produced, written and/or directed by persons with disabilities. Be entertained, learn something new or gain a greater understanding of disability through incredible films.

This year’s event kicks off at 6:30pm with a special presentation from a guest speaker, with the films to screen at 7:00pm.

The venue is the Sagebrush Theatre and is wheelchair accessible.

All films are captioned and interpreters will be available for presentations. So come down and join in for a great evening of film and mingling. Tickets are by donation at the door.

Each year the festival gets more popular and we are aiming to make it as inclusive and accessible to as many individuals as possible.

A world of music at Roots and Blues Festival

Now in its 21st year, the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival is the largest and most musically divers festival in the British Columbian Interior. Over the years it has gained a shining reputation for the variety of its top quality presentations and for its organization.

The festival offers an international roster of artists as well as a strong contingent of Canadian talent in genres crossing folk, blues, world, alternative,

roots, electronica and many other different types of music and fusions, and this year includes well-known acts City and Colour, Bruce Cockburn and Selah Sue, among many others.

The festival is held at the Salmon Arm Fair Grounds with Mount Ida and the Fly Hills providing a scenic background and features five daytime stages and two evening stages. Wells Gray Country is a spectacular, pure wilderness area known as a world-class destination for canoeing, rafting, kayaking, fly-fishing, hiking, camping and horseback riding, and it’s only an hour from Kamloops. Within Wells Gray Park, near Clearwater, BC experience the stunning vistas of high mountains, deep canyons, volcanic cones, brooding oldgrowth forests and raging white-water rivers – and maybe find a treasure!

Connecting with Wild Places If searching for hidden treasure could appeal to you – or your kids – you might want to consider including Wells Gray Provincial Park in your travel plans this summer.

Thompson Rivers University and the Wells Gray World Heritage Committee (WGWHC) are hosting two treasure hunts in the park, each offering a cash prize of $1000. Both treasure hunts are loosely based on a legendary figure named Harkayee, who according to old timers used to roam the mountains hereabouts, occasionally letting out blood curdling shrieks.

Participants in both hunts will need to hike ten of Wells Gray’s front-country trails and learn a little natural history along the way. Each trail yields a singledigit number. Put these numbers together in the right order and you’ve got coordinates for a specific place in the park – X marks the spot.

In the end, whoever finds the hidden clay replica of Harkayee’s skull is the winner.

Though treasure hunt clues are posted on-line at waysofenlichenment.net/wells/hunt/adventure_hunt, treasure hunters will definitely improve their chances when they purchase a copy of Treasure Wells Gray, now available at the Wells Gray Info Centre for $10. Besides providing additional clues, the book gives maps and detailed descriptions for the ten treasure trails the treasure hunters will need to hike.

Free children’s theatre is well-loved Each July and August, the Kamloops Arts Council presents accessible, free family-friendly theatre at Riverside Park five days a week.

Throughout the month of July, the troupe will be performing Leon’s Book of Adventures, the tale of Leon the lion who is sick of the jungle and on the hunt for a new home, and Once Upon A...

Blank?, which follows Alice after she accidentally drops her story-books causing the characters to jump into different stories.

August will have the troupe presenting Clowns Clowns!, the story of a rather silly girl named Noodle who doesn’t quite fit in anywhere until she comes across a circus, and Behind the Fairytales, which introduces the audience to the villains of several famous fairytales, and how they mistakenly gained the notorious title of "villian" - much to their dismay!

The Children's Summer Theatre program offers an educational entertainment experience for young audiences, creates a vibrant community, and improves quality of life in Kamloops. It also provides excellent experience and opportunity for local amateur and emerging young actors and directors.

The performances are every Tuesday through Saturday throughout the summer at 1:00pm and 3:00pm - look for their tent by the water park!
