The Farmer’s Market: a long-running tradition The Farmers’ Market is a tradition in Kamloops, with roots that extend far back in time as well as firmly in the fabric of the community.

In 1914 Kamloops city council set up a market area complete with wooden stalls on the current site of the Plaza Heritage Hotel at Fourth Avenue and Victoria Street. There were sixteen vendors and most were sold out in the first hour.

The market continued through the years of the First World War and closed in 1919 when interest waned.

It was nearly 60 years before the market was revived through Ten Days for World Development, a community education project sponsored by local Christian churches and with support from City Council and the School Board, in 1978.

Thirty years later the market is thriving and continues to be an inspiration - a great gathering place to make and /or meet friends and exchange ideas - a place to share your passion for food and community. It’s a family place with a festival atmosphere, often complete with clowns and musical entertainment.

Markets take place on Wednesday and Saturday and vendors offer a huge and growing variety of products, from bedding plants to fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, baking, eggs, and dairy products. There are also specialty items such as locally made noodles, salsa, condiments and even dog treats.

Saturday Markets are held in the 200 block of St Paul St. in the Stuart Wood schoolyard from 8:00am to noon, April 20 to October 26.

Wednesday Markets are held in the 400 block of Victoria St (in front of the TNRD Library) from 8:00am to 2:00pm, May 1 to October 30.

A quick reminder that the there is a bell rung both at the beginning and end of Saturday markets to alert everyone to the opening and closing times. Sales are discouraged before 8am and vendors are asked to wrap up their transactions as soon as possible after the closing bell. These rules help ensure public safety while vehicles are moving around and setting up the market and provide a safer environment for everyone. Please remember that all animals at the market must be on a short leash or caged at all times. Owners are expected to keep full control of their pets.

The Market welcomes home producers as well as farmers who want to become vendors. Community artisans, home-based businesses, and special music and other events also find a place at the market.

The Kamloops Farmers’ Market is a non-profit society that supports and strives to strengthen the bonds of community by supporting the Food Bank and providing bursaries to three students every year who are enrolled in horticulture or agriculture courses at TRU.

The Heritage Tour unpacks 6000 years of fascinating history of Aboriginal hunters and gatherers, early days of the Hudson’s Bay Company, river commerce of the 1800’s, the tale of two family’s empires, the betrayal of a widow and the rise and fall of two medical institutions.

The Wildlife Watching Tour is two hours of adventure and fun observing and photographing the birds and wildlife of Tranquille together with an experienced guide. Learn about the bobolink, sharp-tailed grouse, great blue heron, pelicans, Lewis’s Woodpecker, painted turtle, black bears, deer and California big horn sheep that ebb and flow across

this ancient fertile delta.

A two hour walking photography tour will take you on a journey capturing the amazing vistas, images and history of Tranquille against the stunning backdrop of the early morning or late afternoon sun of Tranquille featuring wildlife, mountain vistas,

Celebrating 20 years of Music in the Park Kamloops and BCLC will be rocking out with big plans for this year’s 20th anniversary of Music in the Park.

The original concert series was launched in 1993 to celebrate the Canada Summer Games and is now the longest running music festival in Kamloops. The free event has run outdoor concerts for two months every summer for the past 20 years and has entertained more than half a million people in its history.

“I’d like to acknowledge all the people who help bring this great summer tradition to life, in particular Henry Small who does an incredible job of organizing the entertainment.” said Kamloops Mayor, Peter Milobar. “Henry has assured me that this year will feature one of the strongest lineups of entertainment by local, national and international musicians.”

X Fest plays outdoors Project X Theatre’s X Fest 2013 is the only outdoor summer theatre festival in the Interior of BC. Presented in the sunshine at Prince Charles Park in the heart of downtown Kamloops, this year’s X Fest offers something for everyone!

First we'll go on a wild adventure, with the slyest character in children’s literature, as they present Roald Dahl’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Then, everyone’s favourite blockhead takes the stage in the hit Broadway musical You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown!

Project X is a Kamloops theatre company committed to expanding the creative development of emerging artists in the region as well as bringing new

educational, theatrical and artistic experiences to the widest audience possible.

Fairies and pirates in Wonderland As an encore to their amazingly successful Royal Ball last fall, which had close to 400 people in attendance, Kamloops Princess Parties and River City Gymnastics present A Day In Wonderland - A magical experience that will create wonderful memories for your entire family.

Step into a fairytale and spend the day with all of your child’s favorite storybook characters, from Storytelling with Belle, to tinkering a craft with Tink and her friends in Pixie Dust Hollow, or journeying under the sea to the Little Mermaid’s Grotto.

Don’t worry boys! There will be plenty of characters and activities for you as well!

Try out the Pirate Parkour obstacle course with Captain Hook, or be there when Peter Pan confronts Hook and they have a full out battle!

Our characters will also be performing musical and dance numbers throughout the day at the Royal Theatre, or if your feeling a little MAD join Alice and the Mad Hatter for some tea, jam, cookies, and an Un-

Strongmen and women!

Competitors from last year’s BC Strongest Man competition show off the hardware earned by pulling trucks, dead-lifting cars, flipping tires and pressing giant dumbbells. There are four weight classes, including one for Strong Women. This year’s event takes place on July 27 at McDonald Park and is free to attend. They will be collecting donations to the food bank, so spectators are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item.

Prince Charles Park reopens

The City of Kamloops announced the reopening of the new accessible playground at Prince Charles and newly enhanced wading pool on Saturday, June 29 just in time for the Canada Day long weekend.

Completed ahead of schedule, the new playground will be for children ages 2 to 12 and will have the newest accessible CSA equipment and a new impact surface for children of all abilities. The wading pool also has a new look also that will compliment the theme of the playground.

The former play structure was disassembled and will be shipped to Nicaragua by volunteer fire fighters. The City of Kamloops will be hosting a grand opening for the public later this summer.

Skate and blade Roller-skating and blading are great ways to keep your skating skills sharp in the off-season. All ages are invited to come out and skate at McArthur Island Curling Rink on Mondays from June 10 to July 29, 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Skate patrol will change the skating direction every 15-30 minutes. No sticks or pucks please.
