Philanthropy abound with 100 Men Who Care
At the most recent meeting in which $2900 was raised for CMHA-Kamloops Branch.
Kamloops is such an interesting city. Recently returning home to the big city, I had a plethora of people asking, “Why did you move to Kamloops?” In a nutshell the reason is that, outside all the things to do and glamour of Vancouver, Kamloops is reasonably priced, has ample recreation opportunities and is a big enough centre that you can find everything you need here, but small enough that you seem to know everyone. It’s that part that plays into the biggest reason people love Kamloops. People who know each other and feel a sense of community care. Caring is the one attribute that Kamloops seems to have in abundance. No matter how busy we all are or how hectic life seems to be, the amount of people who dedicate some portion of their lives to something they care about is

vast. We see this all throughout the community but one example is Norm Reed, a Kamloops resident and chemistry professor at TRU who has brought the 100 Men Who Care movement to little river city. “I took a leadership and character development series of courses last year,” explains Norm. “One of the assignments was to come up with a major goal or project that would lead to a major contribution within your local community or society. One that would stretch beyond the timelines of the course.” That project that Norm took on was 100 Men Who Care modeled after the 100 Women Who Care group that is very active here in Kamloops. The premise is simple but its effects ripple out throughout the community ten fold. The group,

which aims to be comprised of exactly what its title states, 100 men, meet four times per year, each time donating $100 dollars. Those dollars are collected and given to a different charity or project each time therefore supporting the local do-gooders in your community. It is the perfect group for those of you who want to dabble in philanthropy without getting overwhelmed. “Our first meeting was almost exactly one year ago,” continues Norm. “Currently we have about 40 to 45 active members but our goal is to reach the 100 mark. This format allows us to provide the venue and the opportunity for local organizations to get $10,000 at a meeting once we are at 100 Men.
