The business of being social
Dagostinos_lug_2014.indd 1

The recent social at Hotel Five540Forty was a big hit.
There are many factors which need to take place in order for a community to be self-sustaining. Over the years, many Kamloops organizations and groups have been working hard to ensure that Kamloops will be here for many years to come. The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce is one of these businesses that dedicates their time to making our community stronger than ever. The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce helps the community think about sustainability by connecting local businesses. Each month one of the members of the Chamber hosts a Social and Business Mixer. There has been some form of mixers in Kamloops for three decades. These socials are a way for people to get to know each other in a facilitated and
welcoming setting. This month, the Chambers host is the City of Kamloops. They are hosting the social at the Kamloops Art Gallery, 101 - 465 Victoria Street, on April 9 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. According to Deb McClelland, executive director of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, the whole process is rewarding and easy. “It is very simple. There is a bit of programming done by us at the Chamber and then the host talks about their business. There are appetizers, drinks and plenty of time to get to know one another.” It is through networking that Kamloops’ citizens can learn what is available to them. The more money, which circulates between businesses in the community, the stronger Kamloops’ economy will become.
“This is a great value for our members, if they do it right they will get new contacts for their business and do business with each other,” comments Deb. “The number one reason people join the Chamber is the networking oppourtunities.” Local business have a chance to get to know each other better and maybe make the decision to support the local economy. This well-known business event is open to anyone in the community who are non-members; you will be welcomed with open arms. “What I love is hooking up different with each other; I almost feel like a matchmaker,” adds Deb. “It is interesting which have done work together because they have met at these socials. You never know who you will meet and what kind of
business you will get out of it.” There are also a couple socials a year in which the Chamber also hosts a trade show. This year you can look forward to this event in December. There are also courses put on by the group that shows members how to actually meet each other and get right to the point. The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce Social and Business Mixer is a great way for the business community to get to know each other better. The City hosts the biggest event of the year and it is the perfect oppourunity to network and support other local businesses. If anyone has any questions about the social or the chamber please contact the Chamber of Commerce at 250-3746080. Ashley Demedeiros

Out of the Ashes
Welcome Home
Fans waited patiently at Interiior Saving Centre last Thursday for Phillip Phillips, the Season 11 winner of American Idol. Following the major success of his first hit single, “Home” the twangy Georgia native has been on tour and was in town to perform for his adoring, local fanbase.
Firefighters and City reach collective agreement The City of Kamloops and their firefighters, IAFF Local 913, have agreed to a Collective Agreement. The previous agreement expired in December 2010. This new four-year agreement will take both parties to the end of 2014, and will provide for a 1.25 per cent increase effective January 1, 2011; 1.25 per cent effective July 1, 2011; and 0.5 per cent effective January 1, 2013. The wage increases for 2012, 2013 and 2014 shall be the average of the percentage increase agreed to by the majority of 15 Lower Mainland municipality IAFF Firefighter Agreements. There were a number of operational efficiencies and improvements negotiated in the Collective Agreement that helped to reduce contract costs. These negotiations included no benefit enhancements, an increase in the number of flex firefighters allowing for greater flexibility in job responsibilities and an improved uniform replacement system. The City of Kamloops and IAFF Local 913 were scheduled to proceed to arbitration in April to settle what would have likely been a one- or two-year term, which would have resulted in a Collective Agreement that would have remained two or more years in arrears.
Kamloops Fire Chief Dale McLean says, “I am very pleased that we were able to reach a settlement with our firefighters. This is a direct result of the positive working relationship established between Labour and Management. Everyone within Kamloops Fire Rescue has common goals and objectives in providing the best service possible. The negotiations and Collective Agreement outcomes clearly illustrate this commitment.” Kris Krutop, IAFF Local 913 President, states, “We are encouraged by Administration’s willingness to discuss our business objectively. This agreement is a result of working in a collaborative fashion focusing on efficiencies and operational improvements to our service delivery. It was important to everyone that our service be as efficient as possible. Both parties worked diligently to analyze our business and to carefully consider the people that we proudly serve.” “We’re pleased that an agreement has been reached and we look forward to a continued positive relationship providing excellent fire services in our community,” comments Mayor Peter Milobar.
The Phoenix Centre is now taking applications for the Out of the Ashes Bursary. They are also currently accepting donations for the bursary. The program is open to anyone between the ages of 17 and 35 who has recovered from an addiction and been sober for at least 12 months. Applicants do not have to be clients of the centre but have to be going to school or in some form of vocational training in Kamloops. Applicants have to complete an application form, write a testimonial of their journey from addiction to sobriety and how it has changed their lives and given them goals and provide proof of the educational or training plans. They have to include two reference letters from professionals they have dealt with or who are aware of their situation and a third nonclinical reference that can be from a family member, sponsor or friend. You can download the forms at the centre’s website or give the office a call at 250-374-4634.
Peterson Creek trail closures From April 7 to May 2, portions of the Petersen Creek trail system will be closed in order to help facilitate the repair of a damaged storm sewer pipe and the subsequent erosion that occurred to the trail. The Escape Trail and a segment of the Tom Moore Trail, where it joins up with the Escape Trail, will be closed for the duration of construction. The Tom Moore Trail segment will prevent park users through travel along this corridor. Park users wishing to connect the Tom Moore Trail through the construction area should use FHA Collins and Chancellor Dr trailheads. For a map of Petersen Creek trails please visit kamloops.ca/parks/petersoncreek.shtml

Barb’s Book Sale is always a big hit There is more to the annual Kamloops Symphony Orchestra (KSO)Book Sale than meets the eye. The event’s creator, KSO board member Barb Corbishley, passed away in 2005 from cancer. It was that year the Symphony’s Book and Music Sale was renamed Barb’s Book and Music Sale. Barb first started the book sale some 20 years ago as a little event to help raise some money for the KSO. It started off as a small sale, which has grown over the years to become a $40,000 to $50,000 fundraiser for the community group. Kathy Humphreys, general manager of the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, remembers Barb fondly. “Barb was at the book sale every day,” comments Kathy. “Now her husband John, who is one of our supporters and volunteers, is here just about every day working behind the scenes.” It is dedicated people
like Barb and John who make the semi-annual book sale such a great success. “A lot of credit has to go to the volunteers,” adds Kathy. “There are over a hundred volunteers who help with the sale each year. They are totally dedicated; they want to work at the book sale. They call us well in advance and sign up for shifts.” There are volunteers who do everything from running the tills, pricing, setting up, organizing the books to taking everything down after the two-week sale. “For those who haven’t seen it before, they are shocked at the size of it,” comments Kathy. The entire sale is 70 tables and covers the 6,000 square feet of the Aberdeen Court. Everything is categorized by topic and even alphabetically within categories. “It is amazing,” Kathy adds. “There are also vinyl records, CDs, DVDs, children’s books and sheet music.”
Each year the sale doesn’t show signs of slowing down according to Kathy: “Every time we are flooded by donations from people. There are also lineups on the first day of eager people wanting to look at the new stuff. There are even people who buy a bunch of books and will donate them back the following year and pick up some more.” Barb’s Book and Music Sale is from April 5 to 9 at the Aberdeen Court located at 302-1150 Hillside Drive. The sale will be open 9:30am to 5:30pm from Mondays to Saturdays and 12:00 pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. The money from the sale helps with the KSO’s operating funds, performance programs and education at the symphony school. Stop by the sale and maybe grab a book or two or donate your old books for someone else to enjoy. Ashley Demederios
The Annual Peace Walk is being held on May 3. This year the organizing committee is having a nonmotorized float competition on the day of the walk that is open to members of the community. The floats will be judged and prizes will be awarded to the best floats in each category. Anyone can enter as long as they are a team of at least two people, your float is non-motorized and must promote peace. There are many ways to make a non-motorized float; you can use a bicycle, a wagon, carts, and trolleys, even people on roller skates. Extra points will be awarded for creativity! This is a competition, but the aim is to promote peace so be sure that your float reflects that. First and foremost this is supposed to be fun so enjoy creating your float with your teammates. For more information or if would like to participate please contact Maia or Julianna at peacewalk2014@gmail. com.

Maximus Prime arrives Ever wonder what 27 litres of wine looks like in one bottle? It’s time to find out; Maximus Prime has arrived at Hoodoos at Sun Rivers. This 27 litre wine bottle called ‘The Primat’ is among the largest and rarest in the world. A Latin word for ‘leader’, this name alludes to the best, the top, and the most prized and is one of only four produced by Cassini Cellars. So, how much is 27 litres of wine? Standing just under three feet tall, this bottle contains 36, 750 ml bottles or 180 glasses of wine and weighs in at 125 pounds. Winemaker, Adrian Cassini believes “each bottle of wine should communicate something distinct, something unique about the region it comes from. It’s this dedication to craft and subtlety which has quickly made our red and white wines some of the most celebrated on the Golden Mile Bench, the finest grape growing region in Canada nestled in the Okanagan Valley.” Hoodoos at Sun Rivers launched
the Hoodoos Wine Club this past Friday at the seventh Annual Wine Soiree. This big bottle program will add some excitement heading into 2015 when Rob Larocque, Hoodoos at Sun Rivers General Manager, along with Adrian Cassini breakout the corkscrew and pour Maximus Prime. And yes, a regular corkscrew will open Maximus Prime. The Maximus Collectors Series, a classic Bordeaux/Meritage style wine, has won numerous awards and medals including seven Gold Medals in 2013. Cassini Cellars of Oliver BC is the producer of one of BC’s biggest red wines. How can you be a part of this big bottle event and other wine events at Hoodoos? The Hoodoos Wine Club offers a one year membership with access to exclusive wine events, free gift, free tastings at select wineries and discounts. Karen Rees and Brenda Johnson, owners of the Golden Buddha on Victoria Street, celebrated the tenth anniversary of their ownership of the store this week. Although the store itself is 31 years old, it was ten years ago that the sisters took over. Apparently after ten years of running your own retail business your memory grows dim. The sisters hadn’t realized that it was their anniversary until the night before! They celebrated by offering a sale to their loyal customers. Dinner and drinks for laughs The Laughing Stock Theatre Society has a new production underway. Dinner and Drinks is an adult comedy by Todd Sullivan on April 25 and 26 at the Kamloops Convention Centre Theatre, 1250 Rogers Way. The Laughing Stock has looked at the Dinner Theatre concept for a couple of years now, and with Dinner and Drinks, they hope to re-ignite that excitement of going out for dinner and taking in a play - without having to leave the build-
ing! Preston’s Restaurant is preparing a three course meal for you to enjoy before the play (served in the restaurant), the dinner menu can be found on their website at thelaughingstock.ca. There will be a cash bar in the lobby of the theatre pre-show and at intermission. This is a show for mature audiences only as there is coarse language and sexual themes. Tickets are available at Kamloops Live! Box Office by calling 250-3723216.

Unusual views of the unreal For the month of April, there are two new shows opening at the Kamloops Art Gallery. Rodney Konopaki and Rhonda Neufeld: Suggestions from Kamloops exhibition and the Unreal exhibition are both opening April 5. Unreal is drawn primarily from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection; this exhibition presents work by artists who explore beyond the realm of what is considered real. Using inventive processes and unusual materials, they aim to unhinge us from our typical views of the world and open our eyes to the marvelous, the fantastical, the weird and even the monstrous. Suggestions from Kamloops is a collaboration between two outstanding artists. For this project, Rodney Konopaki and Rhonda Neufeld walk Kamloops marking their movement across the topography and hinting at visual elements in their surroundings. Drawing
from formal and phenomenological methods, the artists walk side by side while employing a type of intaglio technique and drawing on a shared piece of paper.

This drama focuses on a couple faced with a traumatic piece of news: the hospital where their 6-year-old son was born phones to tell them they had been given the wrong baby. This 2014 film has been described as “well-acted and
quietly powerful without settling for easy solutions to its unique dilemma.” The film screens at 7:00pm at the Paramount Theatre located at 5th and Victoria Street. Tickets can be purchased at Moviemart, 444 St. Paul or at the door the evening of the screening. An membership with the Kamloops Film Society, also available at Moviemart or at the door, is required for admission.

2013/2014 Season
ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) Aspects that were with you in the past couple of weeks continue to affect your life and attitude. Watch your temper. Choose your battles with wisdom. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Venus, your ruling planet, travels with you into the territory of friendships, community and organizational affairs. Your romantic side is cooperating well with your nurturing side at this time. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) The sector of life related to romance, children and personal creativity is on hold this week. Meanwhile your ability to concentrate upon projects that require management of details is strong. Organizing files, closets and cabinets will clear the clutter from your mind. CANCER (June 22-July 22) You may not be feeling quite comfortable with yourself this week. It appears your mind is in conflict with your feelings. Do the best you can to deal with this issue up front, perhaps by journaling or discussing it with a friend. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Everything is heating up for you. Sudden changes may occur related to legal, travel and educational interests. Drive and handle tools cautiously. You may be subject to accidents now. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) You may be concentrating on giving practical help to your significant other or to someone else of importance to you. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Examine your motives carefully before taking any initiatives this week. An action may cost you more than it is worth, especially in relationship to other people. The people whose path you cross may have sudden shifts of intention that surprise and confuse you. Or you may be the one who shocks others. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Gossip or dark tales may be following you around at this time. Absolutely do not directly attack the perpetrator, lest the tales expand and grow like Pinocchio’s nose. Attend to matters that you can effectively handle for best results. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You want to go everywhere and do everything at once. You feel generous to others and they to you. If money is an issue, then you would be better off to leave credit cards at home. This period may be difficult for those on a diet or other self-improvement program. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) There appears to be considerable pressure on you that comes from the arenas of home, hearth and family. Mechanical items may break down, seemingly everywhere in your life. The week favors education in practical skills. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Your sign is known as an ‘upside-down’ thinker. You are a natural at seeing situations and problems from a different point of view than the pack. This is a gift you always bring to any circumstance. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Your reflexes are off kilter. Use caution while driving, exercising, or handling tools. One or more debts may be paid. Someone makes payment to you, you pay off debt, or both. The goddess of love brings complements, small gifts or romance.
