A Small World after all It is doubtful you will find a single person in Kamloops who hasn’t heard of Henry Small and it’s no small wonder, as he has promoted the Kamloops music scene and local artists through Music in the Park, Small World Studio and the popular Stan and Hank radio program on CIFM for many years. Like every successful artist, there comes a time for change. It is what keeps creativity from stagnation and allows an artist to grow. It is with this idea that Henry embraces the process of change and will be looking to other creative endeavors as Music in the Park comes to a successful close for another season and he takes a break from radio.
Henry Small is a humble minstrel who hails from the neighbourhoods of New York, where he began his music career as a child prodigy with the violin. Unable to foresee a way to get the attention of the fairer sex with his talented bow technique, he discovered singing in high school and developed a unique and diverse vocal style that managed to get everyone’s attention, including those within the music industry. Circumstance and pure luck brought Henry to the Canadian prairies where he started the band Scrubbaloe Caine. Recognition and respect for this first rate violinist grew and soon he went on tour with Burton Cummings and The Guess
Who. After his successful first North American tour, Henry was approached to replace the lead vocalist, Ron Tabak for a little band that became a big part of the soundtrack for many 1980’s teenagers lives nationwide; Prism. A troubadour at heart, Henry’s pursuit of musical excellence prompted him to explore his options abroad and found himself in the UK where he met John Entwistle, bassist for The Who and played with the band for over ten years. Fast forward a few more years and Henry Small returns to Canada and immerses himself in the Kamloops music scene, recruiting aspiring local musicians to record and perform in his established, professionally equipped recording studio and appear at local venues, festivals and events like Music in the Park; a favourite weekcontinued on page 2
