Local paddlers floating on victory The last few years the Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club (KCKC) has become quite competitive. In particular, the club’s youth paddlers have exceeded expectations with six athletes each bringing home gold hardware and amassing a combined 18 medals total at the BC Summer Games in Nanaimo in late July. They have also qualified for the 2014 Nationals, the Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak Championship in Regina, Saskatchewan held August 19 to 24, which is a pretty big deal. KCKC head coach Stan Marek remarked, “From the first event we knew our level was high.” He continued, “The kids had more fun than expected. We have changed our goals to be higher to reflect that. We’re all focused and involved and looking forward to the future.” While winning medals and competing is great, the athletes won’t get there if they’re not enjoying themselves. The sport isn’t just about the competition. This club also measures their success in terms of happiness. It’s important that members enjoy their time learning, training, racing and playing. The goal of KCKC is to promote and compete in the sport within a fun, healthy and safe environment. This said, KCKC also offers summer camps at Shumway Lake where kids learn the basics of flat water sprint racing (200m to 6km) in single, double and four person canoe and kayaks and practice the skills necessary to join the competitive club. Campers also go on hikes, swim, enjoy the sun, play soccer, have races, play games, explore nature and learn about boats, Shumway Lake is also where the competitive teams typically practice. “They practice two times every day. times on Saturdays.” Stan says. “To keep up their fitness level, the team trains during the colder months by swimming at the YMCA and cross country skiing.” Look for Stan and the team out on the Thompson River as they bring some of their practice efforts to the City this fall. Stan, a high performance paddler who competed in the Czech Republic, has coached for the Kamloops club since last April. “It’s much bigger and better than I

expected.” Stan’s enthusiasm for the sport is evident and propels his desire to get more kids involved and grow the sport. Is your child athletic and looking for a new amateur sport to compete in that might take them to the Provincial, National or even International level? The Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club might be right for them. Find out more by going online to kamloopscanoeand kayakclub.ca. Jody Tippett

Come down and check out the teepees, pit house, play some games, try out the drums or a traditional outfit. You’re welcome to ask questions and take photos. Community input for Tournament Capital Ranch In 2011, the City significantly enhanced the Tournament Capital Ranch lands north of Kamloops when it constructed the slo-pitch and rugby fields and partnered with the Provincial Government for the remediation of the soil to return it to agricultural production status. Today, the City is considering future land uses as Phase 2 of the Tournament Capital Ranch project commences. The City’s Agriculture Area Plan identifies using a portion of the Tournament Capital Ranch lands to create an “Agricultural Centre of Excellence” to support sustainable farming. As it considers these future land uses, the City invites feedback from residents. Some of the proposed uses include, but are not limited to an agricultural trade show and event facility, multi-purpose exhibition centre (not limited to agriculture), agricultural production area, destination water park and public trail along the North Thompson River including a park/picnic area. “This is an exciting time for the City of Kamloops. The Tournament Capital Ranch is well on its way to becoming a signature tourist attraction - highlighting recreation, sport, agriculture and business opportunities,” commented Councillor Nelly Dever. The City wants to hear from you. City Council
will be making its decision in the next few months on how the remaining Tournament Capital Ranch lands will be used. Council wants to ensure any community member who is interested has an opportunity to be informed and to provide input on what is being proposed and to offer additional ideas for future land uses. Your input will help inform Council’s decision and the City’s application to the Agricultural Land Commission to approve the proposed land uses. City staff will be hosting two open houses on Thursday, August 14. The first open house will be held at the Tournament Capital Centre from 12:00pm to 3:00pm and the second will happen at the Tournament Capital Ranch from 5:00pm to 7:00pm in the plaza area. A community survey will be available in hard copy at the Farmers Market, Open Houses and on-line at kamloops.ca/tcr to provide your thoughts and ideas.
The Stanley Cup is coming to Kamloops and Sun Peaks on Saturday, August 23. The Stanley Cup will be available for viewing at Interior Savings Centre from 2pm to 4:00pm. You can meet Kamloops native and Los Angeles Kings’ assistant coach, Davis Payne and have your picture taken with the Stanley Cup. Instead of charging a set fee for this photo opportunity, donations will be gratefully accepted for the RIH Foundation. All proceeds from this event will benefit our local hospital in support of the Pediatrics department. Viewing time is limited to see the cup, so ensure you don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity in Kamloops by entering the contest for a chance to win the first spot in line! Post a photo on your Facebook page with the hashtag “firstinlinekamloops” showing why you deserve to be the MVP and first in line to see the Stanley Cup. The top three winners will be picked and they can bring four of their friends or family to join them at the front of the line. “Faceoff” against the rest of Kamloops and get in your submissions before the contest ends on August 18.

Business Excellence Awards nominees Nominations for the 2014 Business Excellence Awards have been received and the Chamber released the list of all nominees. “This year we received a staggering 468 nominations for fifteen award categories; a record for our awards program,” stated Aleece Laird, president of the board for the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce. “A total of 179 Kamloops businesses were nominated.” The 29th annual Business Excellence Awards are brought to the community by the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and TD Bank Group. The gala event celebrates the Kamloops business community and highlights 16 award winners in total (Business of the Year is chosen from the winners of the other 15 awards). “We want to thank TD for supporting this program,” continued Laird. “We value TD’s partnership and their dedication to our business community.”
The gala awards banquet and ceremony is scheduled for November 1st at the Coast Kamloops Conference Centre. “This is a sell-out event and is a very exciting evening. The media are all invited to attend and all the leaders from the business community will be there,” stated Laird. The timeline leading up to the gala event is as follows:
August – An independent selection committee, comprised of over 40 business leaders, scores each nominee. Early September – KPMG tabulates the scores and informs the selection committee of the top three finalists in each award category. September 10 – Finalists are revealed at a Chamber
function hosted by Kamloops Ford Lincoln. September 10 – Awards Gala Tickets go on sale to the public. September – Selection committee interviews all finalists to determine award recipients. November 1 – Business Excellence Awards Gala at Coast Kamloops Conference Centre.
2015 Training House project kicks off Canadian Home Builders’ Association Central Interior (CHBA CI) and partner Thompson Rivers University (TRU) School of Trades and Technology announced the start of the 2015 Training House Project. This year’s house is being built in Juniper West. This unique project, now in its 25th year, is especially beneficial to the first year residential construction, and electrical program students at TRU as a “hands on” building experience. The students do the foundation, framing and rough in work, then the home is finished with the generous support of CHBA CI members. For the last 19 years, the finished home has been sold to the Kamloops YMCA/YWCA for their Dream Home Lottery fund raiser. The 2015 Training House will be a two-storey three bedroom home with an unfinished basement, approximately 1,500 sq. ft. on the main floor. Designed by Danielle Fauteux of Home Design by Danielle, the home is being built as a Built Green home. The house style is refreshingly modern and positioned well to profile new products and systems to the general public and new home purchasers. Due to the nature of the project, it features the latest innovative product and designs for those thinking of building a new home or even renovating extensively their current home. CHBA Cl will profile the building steps on Facebook and Twitter, giving followers an unusual snapshot of the residential building process.

$ Explore the North Shore at Overlander Days Set in scenic McDonald Park, the North Shore Business Improvement Association’s (NSBIA) signature production, Overlander Days, is an annual, summer, family event that lends itself to bringing together the diversity of people that live, work and play in the vibrant neighbourhoods and 13 business areas of River City’s North Shore. The NSBIA has dreamed up lots of activities for all ages to enjoy on Saturday, August 16. Executive director, Steven Puhallo said that the focus this year is lifestyle. “We are continuing to build on our successes and looking forward to celebrating and showcasing 25 years of growth and prosperity in our vibrant community.” Overlander Days hopes to inspire residents to explore and enjoy the programming presented by cultural institutions, neighbourhood associations, recreation centres and small businesses who want to showcase all that River City North has to offer. While there’s plenty of parking, you can choose to bike down to the event and take advantage of the secure pedal parking while you linger and enjoy all the sights and activities. You definitely don’t want to miss out on the popular Tastes of the North Shore. Benefitting Interior Community Service’s (ICS) Meals
on Wheels program, seven local eateries will be serving up their top three menu items to ticket holders. These aren’t just samples,” notes Steven. “You won’t leave hungry.” Get to know these amazing restauranteurs, Spice of India, The Crazy and The German, Reubin’s, Jam Can, White Spot, Red Beard Roasters and Gyldi’s Pizza, by purchasing pre-sale discount tickets and receive deals on family and corporate packs. Call ICS at 250-554-3134. The Seniors VIP Area is a special reserved area for citizens 65 and over. Meanwhile, younger residents can join forces at this buoyant neighbourhood party in the Kids Zone featuring a bouncy castle, face painting, horizontal bungee jump, play jousting and special appearances by the Enchanted Tea Cup. Steven remarked, “The Snow Queen and her princess sister will make a special appearance, but I can’t tell you more.” He quips, “My lips are frozen.” Kamloops Arts Council’s theatre troupe, the Rivertown Players, will also be on site with their unique children’s improv, music, dancing and theatrical games. If you feel the need to beat the heat, go for a dip or get wet at the Splash Pad. Steven reminds that admission to McDonald pool is free for the day.
He also hinted that he is ready to take a turn soaking up the fun as a willing participant in the Dunk Tank attraction. Meander through the booths and check out what the North Shore has to offer and get to know your local businesses at the Business Expo. Chat with community groups and meet the movers and shakers in this dynamic community. From the opening and throughout the day enjoy live singers, bands and special entertainment from the main stage area. Headlining the event is Paisley Groove with two performances, just before 2:00pm and shortly after 3:00pm. There will be cultural performances as well as demos including Kamloops Hot Yoga and Tom La Roche Martial Arts, who will wow you with their moves. Mark Overlander Days on your calendar and plan to attend this inclusive gathering from 10:00am until 4:00pm where businesses and neighbours are brought together face-to-face to share their talents and stories under the warmth of Kamloops skies. For more information or to get involved call 250-376-4611 or email info@nsbia.com. Jody Tippett

A man went to the doctor complaining that his wife could barely hear. The doctor suggested a test to find out the extent of the problem. “Stand far behind her and ask her a question and then slowly move up and see how far away you are when she first responds.” The man, excited to finally be working on a solution for the problem, runs home and sees his wife preparing supper. “Honey,” the man asks standing around 20 feet away “what’s for supper?” After receiving no response he tried it again 15 feet away and again no response. Then again at ten feet away and again no response. Finally he was five feet away “Honey, what’s for supper?” She replies, “For the fourth time, it’s lasagna!”
Deathbed wish
Edward was lying on his deathbed and the family was taking turns spending time with him. As he was speaking to his young granddaughter Emily, Edward suddenly smelled an all too familiar smell. Why it was his favorite – apple pie! His wife Sandy must have been baking it for him to enjoy this one last time. “Emily dear,” asked Edward. “Would you please go ask Grandma for a slice of that apple pie? It’s smells so delicious!” Emily ran off to fulfill her dying Grandfather’s last wish. A moment later, Emily returned empty handed. “Where’s my pie?” questioned Edward. “Grandma said it’s not for now,” responded Emily, “it’s for the funeral”.

What seems to be the problem? My four-year old daughter had a terrible case of the flu, she was achy, had a high fever and was terribly hoarse. After waiting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office for over an hour we were finally admitted to see the doctor. After the usual routine of listening to her breathing and checking her ears, the doctor looked my daughter in the eye and said, “So what would you say is bothering you the most?” Without skipping a beat my daughter promptly answered, “Billy, he always breaks my toys!”

LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Warning to those on diet and exercise programs: this week it is just too easy to break training. If you mean what you’ve promised to yourself, don’t go anywhere in which you would be in harm’s way. It is a time in which you feel more outgoing and extroverted. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) You may be feeling irritable and a little nervous. You can’t be sure whether someone significant in your life is really telling you the truth. The probability is that there is some sort of deception present but you might be deceiving yourself. Monitor your inner critic this week. It may be serving up a plate of neurotic guilt to interfere with your attitude. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) For the next few days you may be feeling a little off, or not quite like yourself. Things improve significantly after Sunday. There are likely to be favorable activities related to your work or co-workers. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 –Nov. 22) You are starting fresh at last. Your energy is harnessed and in true go mode. Your ability to see yourself as successful is one of the prime movers on your goal. Any activities related to work, short distance travel, education, siblings and vehicles has positive aspects. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You want to move forward, but something is holding you in place. You may have trouble putting your finger on what it is exactly. One clue is that the problem holding you back is a belief that has been handed down through the myths in your family of origin. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) Your charisma is powerful and you can be at your most persuasive now. Manipulation in order to get what you want is not really necessary. Step aside from such temptations. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) You are walking a tightrope while you wait for something very important to happen. You want to break free and do your own thing, but the outcome is too serious for you to take flight. Keep breathing deeply and move one foot carefully in front of the other toward your goal. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Your intuition and creative energies are high right now. But something keeps you from allowing the muse to manifest ‘tilare 10pm Days a to Week • 259 Tranquille through you. As long Open as you not7 trying prove yourself betterRoad than othlemonadestand420.com ers, you can allow a pure expression of the muse. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) This is a time to believe your dreams and make that push toward success. Activities requiring strength and/or endurance are favored. A transformation is at hand and available if you will reach for it. Help from those more powerful than yourself may be forthcoming if you ask. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Beware that you are in a sensitive frame of mind and may misinterpret that which is said to you. You may be the one who hears what you want to hear. So take your impressions with a grain of salt until you clarify what was originally intended. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Things of the past may float up in your mind for reflection. Try to stay on the planet and think carefully before you speak. If you feel “hurt”, don’t leap to a conclusion before asking what the meaning is of a behavior or a comment. CANCER (June 22-July 22) New information comes to the fore that suggests a sudden change in plans. You will be quite involved in communications or paperwork as a result. By the end of the week you should feel successful for your endeavors. Conditions of home, hearth and family are positive. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Vivian Carol.
