Out of the Ashes, into the dust

The Phoenix Centre is looking for support from the community to help 25 young men at risk spend two days with five mountain biking gurus learning the ins and outs of the sport while chewing up the terrain at the Kamloops Bike Ranch. When a staff member at the Phoenix Centre recently spoke out to say that there are several programs to engage young girls at risk but nothing for the guys, Sian Lewis, the centre’s executive director, recognized the gap and began brainstorming. “We started thinking hockey, but the costs of that sport are astronomical, and the barriers to continue with it after a two-day camp are just too big,” explains Sian. “It was when a young man in recovery himself approached us looking for a way to give back and I asked for his input on how to engage young males that he suggested mountain biking.” The young man had found the sport himself when he decided to make healthy choices and changes in his own life. It’s edgy and risky enough to feed adrenaline seekers, it’s accessible and it’s all about community. The idea was a perfect fit, and Sian set about coming up with a formula to make it a lifechanging opportunity for a group of young men in our own community. “I hear people talk all the time

Yarn explosion soon to hit Victoria Street The Kamloops Art Gallery - in collaboration with the City of Kamloops, KCBIA, Electrictree Yarns and enthusiastic community volunteers - will be transforming downtown Kamloops into a large-scale public art work to celebrate the 2013 BC Seniors Games, which will be hosted by the City of Kamloops from August 20 to 24. Trees on Victoria Street (from 1st to 5th Avenues) will be outfitted with knitted, crocheted and woven tree cozies made by over 100 participating craftspeople who have been working on their pieces for almost a year in preparation for this massive installation, initiated by former Kamloops residents Shirley and Art Hooper. Yarn bombing, yarn storming, tree cozies, knit graffiti and urban knitting are all forms of art that employ colourful displays of knitted or crocheted cloth. Yarn bombing is an international public art phenomenon, practiced around the globe. Downtown Kamloops will explode

with cheerful colour, invigorating public space with creations made by talented community members and additional pieces arriving by mail from knitters from across the region This community project is the culmination of hours of individual effort and the result of various knitting events hosting by KAG over the past months, including a popular monthly “Knit n’ Sip” gathering at the Noble Pig Brewhouse. Completed works will remain on view until late fall at which point usable works will be laundered and reknit into practical items for donation to local service organizations, women’s centres and BCSPCA. Celebrate the achievements of seniors participating in the 2013 BC Seniors Games, local fibre artists and supportive community partners by taking a walk down Victoria Street and checking out the Yarn Bombing Kamloops installation! The installation will be on view

from August 8 through August 19, with the BC Seniors Games happening August 20 to 24.

KSO Volunteers appreciated Kamloops Symphony volunteers gathered recently for a scrumptious breakfast prepared by staff and (you guessed it) volunteers outside their office in Station Plaza. This was quite possibly the most beautiful morning of the summer and it was a pleasure for all to visit over coffee and recognize the importance of the group of volunteers. Artist auctioning work for charity BJ Arnason-Muttitt, a master pastel artist from McLure, will be auctioning seven paintings of her Kamloopa Powwow-series for charity. The silent auction will take place at the Strong Picture Framing Enterprises at 11-711 Victoria Street in Kamloops from 10:00am to 4:00pm Tuesday through Friday from August 15 to October 15. The bidding starts at a minimum price and the winners will be announced at the end of October. BJ Arnason-Muttitt has chosen to donate the proceeds to the SPCA, the Kamloops Mission, and the GawaLing Buddhist Society in McLure. “Rather than have the images stored ‘out of the way’, I offer them to the public in a way that benefits a larger community. Directing the proceeds to community groups that meet needs in a community is a way to help many individuals and put the paintings to multiple good

uses”, the artist elaborates. Cheetie Malouin, the owner of Strong Picture Framing Enterprises came up with the idea of the silent auction and offered the space in her store. “I strongly believe in the power and creativity of BJ’s paintings. They come from the heart and they need to be shared. I like to support joint ventures and a worthy cause,” she explains. BJ Arnason-Muttitt has painted since 1987 and has had numerous solo and collaborative exhibitions. After ordaining as a Buddhist nun, she became co-founder of the GawaLing Buddhist Society which operates the GawaLing Mindfullness Meditation Centre in McLure. Known as Venerable Puntsok Chödrön by her ordained name, BJ ArnasonMuttitt is the head teacher and spiritual leader of the Centre. As an ordained person, she retains no personal income and donates her income to charity.
