Out of the Ashes, into the dust

The Phoenix Centre is looking for support from the community to help 25 young men at risk spend two days with five mountain biking gurus learning the ins and outs of the sport while chewing up the terrain at the Kamloops Bike Ranch. When a staff member at the Phoenix Centre recently spoke out to say that there are several programs to engage young girls at risk but nothing for the guys, Sian Lewis, the centre’s executive director, recognized the gap and began brainstorming. “We started thinking hockey, but the costs of that sport are astronomical, and the barriers to continue with it after a two-day camp are just too big,” explains Sian. “It was when a young man in recovery himself approached us looking for a way to give back and I asked for his input on how to engage young males that he suggested mountain biking.” The young man had found the sport himself when he decided to make healthy choices and changes in his own life. It’s edgy and risky enough to feed adrenaline seekers, it’s accessible and it’s all about community. The idea was a perfect fit, and Sian set about coming up with a formula to make it a lifechanging opportunity for a group of young men in our own community. “I hear people talk all the time
