Out of the Ashes, into the dust

The Phoenix Centre is looking for support from the community to help 25 young men at risk spend two days with five mountain biking gurus learning the ins and outs of the sport while chewing up the terrain at the Kamloops Bike Ranch. When a staff member at the Phoenix Centre recently spoke out to say that there are several programs to engage young girls at risk but nothing for the guys, Sian Lewis, the centre’s executive director, recognized the gap and began brainstorming. “We started thinking hockey, but the costs of that sport are astronomical, and the barriers to continue with it after a two-day camp are just too big,” explains Sian. “It was when a young man in recovery himself approached us looking for a way to give back and I asked for his input on how to engage young males that he suggested mountain biking.” The young man had found the sport himself when he decided to make healthy choices and changes in his own life. It’s edgy and risky enough to feed adrenaline seekers, it’s accessible and it’s all about community. The idea was a perfect fit, and Sian set about coming up with a formula to make it a lifechanging opportunity for a group of young men in our own community. “I hear people talk all the time

The Kamloops Art Gallery is presenting the Luxury Vacation Lottery again after the success of last year’s fundraiser. The prize, valued at $10,000, is a European river cruise for two people on an Avalon Waterways river ship. With only 450 tickets being sold the odds of winning this prize are amazing. “This is a really fun fundraiser for us. The Luxury Vacation Lottery offers a really special prize – a trip for two to Europe – and the odds are one in 450 once all tickets sell. We think it is a great deal,” says Judy Basso, fundraising events coordinator for the Kamloops Art Gallery. New this year is the “the perfect gift package”: the Gallery Store offers a raffle ticket, a travel journal, a quality pen, and a blank greeting card with a copy of the Avalon Waterways trips catalogue - all for $125. It even includes complimentary gift-wrapping! Ticket sales end at noon on December 24 or once they have all sold, and the draw date is January 7. Don’t be disappointed. Tickets are available at the Kamloops Art Gallery, Gallery Store at 465 Victoria St. or by phoning 250377-2400.

Culture Days is a collaborative movement to encourage awareness, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. Now in its fourth year, this Canada-wide celebration represents the largest-ever public participation campaign undertaken by the arts and cultural community in this country. Culture Days will feature free hands-on activities that invite the public to participate in “ behind-the-scenes” world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators and designers at

work. Through this exchange, artists and creators have a unique opportunity to engage people of all ages in their creative practice. Culture Days will take place September 27 to 29, in all provinces and territories. Dylan, who has made a career of mountain biking and coaching and whose monthly column can be found on Pinkbike.com, said it feels good to be able to connect with kids who would not otherwise have an opportunity to take part in such an event. “We’ll show them it’s not just an activity they can go and do, but a positive lifestyle all around. A lot

of people, when they try riding, they get hooked,” he says, adding there is a huge mountain biking community in Kamloops and all kinds of different levels of worldclass riding available. “You can go to the Bike Ranch any day of the week and there is just a bunch of kids hanging out, there’s no cliqueyness.” The free event on September 10 and 11 at Juniper Bike Ranch is for young men ages 15 to 25 who

have been impacted by substance use, don’t typically have access to organized sports, and experience other barriers in their lives in terms of accessing opportunities. There are already 10 youth accepted for the two-day event with room for another 15, but sponsorship is needed before more kids can be registered. Yarn explosion soon to hit Victoria Street The Kamloops Art Gallery - in collaboration with the City of Kamloops, KCBIA, Electrictree Yarns and enthusiastic community volunteers - will be transforming downtown Kamloops into a large-scale public art work to celebrate the 2013 BC Seniors Games, which will be hosted by the City of Kamloops from August 20 to 24. Trees on Victoria Street (from 1st to 5th Avenues) will be outfitted with knitted, crocheted and woven tree cozies made by over 100 participating craftspeople who have been working on their pieces for almost a year in preparation for this massive installation, initiated by former Kamloops residents Shirley and Art Hooper. Yarn bombing, yarn storming, tree cozies, knit graffiti and urban knitting are all forms of art that employ colourful displays of knitted or crocheted cloth. Yarn bombing is an international public art phenomenon, practiced around the globe. Downtown Kamloops will explode

with cheerful colour, invigorating public space with creations made by talented community members and additional pieces arriving by mail from knitters from across the region This community project is the culmination of hours of individual effort and the result of various knitting events hosting by KAG over the past months, including a popular monthly “Knit n’ Sip” gathering at the Noble Pig Brewhouse. Completed works will remain on view until late fall at which point usable works will be laundered and reknit into practical items for donation to local service organizations, women’s centres and BCSPCA. Celebrate the achievements of seniors participating in the 2013 BC Seniors Games, local fibre artists and supportive community partners by taking a walk down Victoria Street and checking out the Yarn Bombing Kamloops installation! The installation will be on view

from August 8 through August 19, with the BC Seniors Games happening August 20 to 24.

KSO Volunteers appreciated Kamloops Symphony volunteers gathered recently for a scrumptious breakfast prepared by staff and (you guessed it) volunteers outside their office in Station Plaza. This was quite possibly the most beautiful morning of the summer and it was a pleasure for all to visit over coffee and recognize the importance of the group of volunteers. The KSO extends a special thank-you to Carol and Rick Howie, Helen Newmarch and Kaitlin Methot for preparing and serving the breakfast.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Feed your passion for fashion Fashion can be addictive. For many of us it’s a way to express ourselves creatively, make a statement about who we are, and set ourselves apart from the crowd. Having several seasons and occasions to dress for, along with constantly changing trends, can make it hard to keep up and even harder to find room in our budgets. The Ruby Room knows this, and has made it their business to make it easy for Kamloops shoppers to stay in style. “The big thing about our store is that it’s one-of-a-kind,” says Shannon Ramunno, owner of The Ruby Room. “When you buy a piece here, you don’t have to worry about wearing the same thing as everyone else.” At the end of her fifth year operating the store, Shannon has come to understand what her customers are looking for. Her new and recycled fashion lines bear name brands like Coach, Lululemon, Guess, Kenneth Cole, Michael Kors and many, many more that aren’t always available locally from other stores. “A lot of our stock is local, but I don’t buy anything that you can easily find in town,” promises Shannon, who sources much of her inventory from outside of Kamloops to keep the shopping experience fresh for her customers. “I cater to people who want to be a little different, and who don’t want to travel to find those pieces.” The store racks are currently home to a variety of high-end summer apparel, from flowy dresses to chic tanks to strappy sandals and all of the accessories

you may want to pair with them: bandeaus, scarves, belts and more. “We carry locally made jewelry, too, in addition to our upcycled and vintage pieces,” says Shannon, adding that she’s also just begun carrying the popular earth-friendly Barefoot Venus bath line. Aside from the seasonal items, Shannon carries suits and some sweaters all year round, and solid rack of jeans in an array of coveted brands – think 7 For All Mankind, Silver, J Brand and

True Religion – is always wellstocked. She has new pieces appearing throughout the store every week and brings her most popular items, like new Coach purses, in on a regular basis. Perry Tucker filled the 100 Block of Victoria Street with music on the afternoon of Friday, July 12. Live at Lunch is in it’s ninth summer season and runs five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday 11:30am to 2:00pm until August 24.

Artist auctioning work for charity BJ Arnason-Muttitt, a master pastel artist from McLure, will be auctioning seven paintings of her Kamloopa Powwow-series for charity. The silent auction will take place at the Strong Picture Framing Enterprises at 11-711 Victoria Street in Kamloops from 10:00am to 4:00pm Tuesday through Friday from August 15 to October 15. The bidding starts at a minimum price and the winners will be announced at the end of October. BJ Arnason-Muttitt has chosen to donate the proceeds to the SPCA, the Kamloops Mission, and the GawaLing Buddhist Society in McLure. “Rather than have the images stored ‘out of the way’, I offer them to the public in a way that benefits a larger community. Directing the proceeds to community groups that meet needs in a community is a way to help many individuals and put the paintings to multiple good

uses”, the artist elaborates. Cheetie Malouin, the owner of Strong Picture Framing Enterprises came up with the idea of the silent auction and offered the space in her store. “I strongly believe in the power and creativity of BJ’s paintings. They come from the heart and they need to be shared. I like to support joint ventures and a worthy cause,” she explains. BJ Arnason-Muttitt has painted since 1987 and has had numerous solo and collaborative exhibitions. After ordaining as a Buddhist nun, she became co-founder of the GawaLing Buddhist Society which operates the GawaLing Mindfullness Meditation Centre in McLure. Known as Venerable Puntsok Chödrön by her ordained name, BJ ArnasonMuttitt is the head teacher and spiritual leader of the Centre. As an ordained person, she retains no personal income and donates her income to charity.

A taxi passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped centimeters from a shop window. For a second everything went quiet in the cab, then the driver said, “Look mate, don’t

ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!” The passenger apologized and said, “I didn’t realize that a little tap would scare you so much. “The driver replied, “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver. I’ve been driving a funeral van for the last 25 years.”

Can’t eat just one Two sea monsters were swimming around in the ocean, looking for something to do. They came up underneath a ship that was hauling potatoes. Bob, the first sea monster, swam underneath the ship, tipped it over and ate everything on the ship. A little while later, they came up to another ship, again hauling potatoes. Bob again capsizes the ship and eats everything onboard. The third ship they found was also hauling potatoes and Bob once again capsized it and ate everything. Finally his buddy Bill asked him, “Why do you keep tipping over those ships full of potatoes and eating everything on board?” Bob replied, “I wish I hadn’t, but I just can’t help myself once I start. Everyone knows you can’t eat just one potato ship.”
