Had a good laugh lately? By popular demand, The Laughing Stock Theatre Society (TLS) is remounting its smash hit adult comedy Dinner and Drinks by Todd Sullivan on September 11, 12 and 13. The production happens at Kamloops Conference Centre Theatre located at 1250 Rogers Way. Producer and society president Vance Schneider says, “When Dinner and Drinks premiered for TLS in the spring of 2014 we sold out our two performances.

The response to both the show and the dinner theatre concept was so overwhelming we made the decision to remount the play in September. We’re also happy to announce that the ‘dinner’ portion of the evening will be held in the theatre and that Preston’s Restaurant will be providing a beautiful buffet dinner.

There will also be a cash bar in the lobby of the theatre preshow and at intermission.”

The chef-carved roast beef dinner will be held in the theatre from 6:30pm to 7:45pm and curtain is at 8:00pm. This show is for mature audiences as there is coarse language and sexual themes.

Pay for Downtown parking with your mobile phone The City of Kamloops has announced that paying by phone is now available for downtown parking. Beat the heat and avoid the cold at pay stations, and instead pay for parking from the convenience of your vehicle using your phone.

Telepark is a service provider that has been integrated to the City’s parking systems to provide a real time service to pay for parking with your mobile phone. You need only a mobile phone number, email address, a valid credit card and your license plate number in order to complete a quick one-time account registration at telepark.com.

Once registered, you can use text or phone in to start and stop your parking. Telepark is available for downtown street parking, as well

as in City-owned downtown lots.

The system will request you to enter the zone number listed for the parking area to start a parking session. These zone numbers are now displayed on the old meter poles and pay stations downtown or on the signs and pay stations in the City’s parking lots.

First time registration gets you parking quickly with a single vehicle. By returning to telepark. com and creating an online profile, users can then access additional features such as: • Start and Stop parking using Telepark’s website, which is optimized for smartphones • Add additional phone numbers for authorized users of your account • Add additional license plates and vehicles for family or others

• Change your credit card information • View your parking history • View your billing statements The Telepark service charges an industry standard $0.35 fee for

each completed parking session in addition to the City’s parking rates.

Victoria based Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra recently played at Music in the Park and at the Grind. The gypsy roots band put on an impromptu sidewalk show upon discovering the Downtown blue piano outside of Kipp Mallery Pharmacy.

Piano Masterclass with Dr. Kim Dr. Michael Kim, dean of music at Brandon University’s School of Music, is the guest soloist for the Kamloops Symphony’s season opener on Saturday, September 27.

He will also be leading a Piano Masterclass on Friday, September 26 from 4:00 to 6:30pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, presented by the Kamloops Symphony and Kamloops Festival of the Performing Arts.

Kamloops Taste of Downtown results are in!

The awards were handed out for the annual Echo Taste of Downtown to some worthy recipients.

Congratulations to Indian Aroma (Fast food restaurant) who won the Golden Fork Award (Most Favourites) and to The Commodore Grand Cafe and Lounge who took home the Silver Spoon Award (Highest Percentage of Favourites). If you haven’t tried them out, get in there for lunch today!

In addition to these awards, Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association (KCBIA) was able to add another $1600 into the Downtown Kamloops Community Kamloops Food Bank Fund at the BC Interior Community Foundation, bringing the total to $6800. Mac’s Convenience Store on Tranquille Road, added another $200, bringing the total to $7000.

The annual walk of food sees hundreds of hungry patrons flood into the downtown core to try delectables at many of our fine downtown dining establishments. This year we had 22 awesome restaurants participate, serving a wide range and variety of small treats. There was calamari, cutlets, meatballs, pulled pork, cheese, brownies, salads, smoothies, pizza and butter chicken just to name a few.

The most coveted day of the whole year downtown, we start getting calls about the Taste of Downtown months in advance, with hungry diners just drooling at the chance to eat big. It is a great event which aims to

introduce potential diners to restaurants they have not experienced before. Even we get routinely surprised at what some restaurants offer, making quick plans to go back for a full meal and try some more.

Each diner is allowed to vote for one restaurant that they feel was the best. We give out two awards, the original Golden Fork award which goes to the restaurant with the most overall votes. And because there are varied times that restaurants can participate, we added the Sil-

ver Spoon Award which is awarded to the restaurant who received the most votes per visits (highest percentage). It’s hard to compete for overall votes if some restaurants are serving food all day and some for three hours.

None of this could be accomplished without the 22 fabulous restaurants who went over and above to dish out food to patrons during this event. All proceeds go to the Kamloops Food Bank and to KCBIA’s Live at Lunch Music program.

CAP Team committed to keeping downtown safe With the help of our safety patrollers, working closely with both RCMP and bylaw, downtown Kamloops has never been friendlier, safer or more welcoming!

Improvements on things like back alley garbage disposals and lighting are some of KCBIA’s goals in regards to creating a better downtown for everyone, and are a few of the projects that the CAP Team have taken on this summer.

Hafiz, one of the four safety patrollers on this year’s CAP Team, is currently in the process of applying to be a part of the Vancouver Police Department and is excited to be a part of some of these changes.

“We’ve been working a lot this summer on improving the back alleys,” said Hafiz.

“Similar to some larger cities, we are actively working to increase the amount of lighting in the alleyways… more lighting means less property crime, which is good for both store owners and patrons!”

He then went on to attend grad school at York University, and is currently in his final year of Law at TRU. “This summer has been great in regards to outreach and safety work,” exclaimed Hafiz. “We have had very little problems with the street involved people, as well a very low number of incidents that have required our involvement, only about 16.”

In order to facilitate and share information between agencies in the downtown core, the safety patrollers attend bi-weekly meetings with both the RCMP and By-Law. “The meetings have been very effective,” said Hafiz. “It’s good to touch base, give each other updates and keep a good rapport between all of us! It makes our job that much easier!”

Busy bodies and busy brains Christy Horvath hopes to spark a keen interest in Kamloops kids by sharing knowledge of the endless natural surroundings offered to us with the animals and plant life that inhabit the Kamloops region.

Christy has worked with children for over 20 years as a Licensed Early Childhood Educator, foster parent and after-school care supervisor. She loves the outdoors and is passionate about respecting our community and planet. Bridging these passions, Christy hopes to demonstrate to kids that there is much more out there than screen time.

Busy Body Busy Brain is a City of Kamloops Parks, Recreation and Cultural program that will begin in September in the Discovery Room at Kamloops Museum and Archives located at 207 Seymour Street. The six-week program, facilitated by Christy, is geared toward children ages eight to 13 years of age. The program focuses on creative expression as well as physical expression. Physical activities aim to enhance concentration and cognition. Participants learn about the environment in a fun and creative way using various craft activities that teach about wildlife and the areas they inhabit.

Brain teaser activities, I-Spy collections and music will compliment simple physical games.

Christy comments, “My goal is to have the children gain a greater sense of their community and the natural surroundings. We will take a look at how to respect and protect all the abundance we have been afforded. The children will have an opportunity to meet new

KAC’s retro AGM honours and welcomes with mad style Dozens of people attended the Kamloops Arts Council’s (KAC) Mad Men Party / 1960s-themed Volunteer and Donor Appreciation on August 12 at St. Andrew’s on the Square. The evening featured surprise live entertainment, refreshments by Eats Amore and a game of Twister.

It was described as the best AGM that many had ever attended. It was a night to remember. The evening included awards being handed to recognize supporters.
