August 10 to 12 marks the 18th Shown-Shine, a colourful event with prizes and tons of fun activities for the whole family. Registration for the 9th annual A&W-hosted Hot Nite in the City (HNITC) Poker-Run will take place at the Plaza Heritage Hotel on Friday from 3:00pm to 6:30pm. A&W’s HNITC breakfast is served from 5:00am to 11:00am or you can head over to The Plaza Heritage Hotel where they are hosting a special HNITC breakfast buffet from 7:00am to 10:00am. After you have filled your belly it’s time to feast your eyes on all of the motorized bling the Shown-Shine promises. Celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee The Kamloops Multicultural Society and the Kamloops Heritage Railway have joined together to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s sixtieth year on the throne. They are doing it with a royal tea party on Saturday, August 11. The event is to be held at the railway plaza and will include a

queen as well as English tea and biscuits served by the seniors of the CSI Seniors Centre. Things start at 10:00am with an opening ceremony and the arrival of a queen who will board the train for a run up the north river. While the queen is away on her journey, tea will be served and stage performances will entertain

guests who have stayed behind. Once the queen returns, she will join the tea drinkers in a royal walkabout style. Seniors are especially invited to join the tea party and to share their royal memories and even bring some royal mementos from years past to show others. Guests are also invited to dress up in their

International Disability Film Festival

On August 22, Open Door Group will celebrate the third year of the International Disability Film Festival – an event that includes inspiring short films and experiences with a focus on breaking down barriers, stereotypes and normalizing disabilities. The evening will include a screening of several award-winning, short films from around the world that have been produced, written and/or directed by persons with disabilities. Be entertained, learn something new or gain a greater understanding of disability through these incredible films. The event will be held at the Sagebrush Theatre and begins off at 6:30 pm with an address from a guest speaker. Films will be shown at 7:00 pm. The event is offered at no charge, however donations at the door will be greatly appreciated.

You can’t keep a good playwriting competition down After suspending its national playwriting competition in 2010, Theatre BC is delighted to announce its rebirth in the form of an annual British Columbia playwriting competition. Theatre BC had conducted its national playwriting competition for over 20 years prior to its suspension. “The national playwriting competition was one of our most popular programs and one that we fully supported as an organization,” says Randy Poulis, vice-president of operations. “Now it’s back but we’ve chosen to focus on the playwrights of British Columbia.” As well as plays by British Columbian authors, the competition also encourages submissions by aboriginal and youth authors from across the province. Theatre BC has been a parent organization for community theatre across the province since 1932. It annually hosts Mainstage - a competition amongst community theatre companies each July. Mainstage, this year held in

Kamloops, is the largest provincial theatre festival of its kind in Canada. The Provincial Playwriting Competition is open to original scripts of drama or comedy, either full-length or one-act. Deadline for entry is December 31. Independent jurors will decide upon winners in each category with a prize of $1,000 awarded for the chosen full-

length, $750 for the one-act, and $500 for a script of special merit. Competition details and entry forms are available online at theatrebc.org/content/play writing-competition For more information call Theatre BC’s provincial office at 778-471-5620 or e-mail pwc@theatrebc.org

First ever Ribfest at Riverside Park

– continued from page 1 in the refreshment centre will flow pretty good and there will be other eats and treats as well. The festival proceeds raise funds for seniors and children’s charities in the Kamloops area. The Thompson Valley Radio Controlled Race Club will be showcasing their racing expertise during the HNITC Show-n-Shine. You can watch them race their RC vehicles at the end of the 500-block Victoria Street. Others will be raising money and eyebrows as

they bare it all for the Bare As You Dare Walk/ Run-A-Thong organized by the Kamloops Ridge Runners. The pants drop at 9:00 am on Sunday, August 12. End off the day on a high note and boogie into the night at Music in the Park starting at 7:00pm at the Riverside Park Bandshell. It’s sweet summertime in Kamloops. Get out and enjoy the heat and fill up on endless hours of entertainment! Jody Tippett

Bicentennial Event countdown is on!

In 1812, fur trader and explorer David Stuart built a trading post on the shore of the Thompson River. 2012 commemorates Kamloops’ 200th year of shared living with the Tk’emlúps, and 200 years of community achievement and growth. The City of Kamloops, the Kamloops Museum and Archives and the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc are excited to start counting down to the 2012 Bicentennial Event taking place on August 25 at Riverside Park. The day’s festivities will start at 9:00am at Riverside Park with a pancake breakfast provided by the Paddlewheelers Lions Club. Following the breakfast, festivities and activities will commence at 10:00am and continue throughout the day until 4:00pm. Attractions include local artisan displays, multicultural and educational booths, performers, face painting and more! Re-enactors will have a traditional encampment set up as part of the tribute to our shared 200 years of history. There will be multiple food booths and refreshments available. At 1:00pm, Mayor Peter Milobar will arrive by canoe on the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc lands for a ceremonial meeting with Chief Shane Gottfriedson. The Mayor and Chief

will then travel together in a voyageur canoe, accompanied by members of both councils, down the South Thompson River to Riverside Park. Once arriving at the park at

approximately 2:00pm, there will be another ceremony, complete with drummers, dancers, a ceremonial tree planting and unveiling of the 2012 Commemorative Plaque.

Five finalists face off in cocktail competition The five finalists of the 2012 Tourism Kamloops Cocktail Competition have been determined. On August 9 at 3:00pm, Ramada’s Rooftop Lounge, Hoodoos at Sun Rivers, Terra Restaurant, Frick and Frack and ORA Restaurant Lounge will face off at St. Andrews on the Square where a panel of judges will select the overall winner based on the presentation by lounge, presentation of the cocktail and how well the cocktail ties into the city’s history. 2012’s competition embraced the celebration of Kamloops’ Bi-Centennial whereby participating cocktails featured an interpretation of the history of Kamloops. Using a maximum of six ingredients, the cocktails have been included on the establishment’s menu since July and will remain after the competition until September 4. A total of 3866 votes were cast online over the four-week period.

Their easy, confident approach and warm manner have ensured a faithful following of clients and the recent launch of their new branding is sure to further increase that fan base. The team also sees themselves as community leaders. One big drawback to chemotherapy for many people is the idea of losing their hair; this is something the team at Blowfish tried to combat by lopping off their locks earlier in the year raising over $10,000 for char-

Golf hazards in the good old days A young man who was also an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in nine holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old gent to join him.

To his surprise the old man played fairly quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn’t waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball - and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot the old man finally said, “You know,

The schoolteacher was taking her first golfing lesson. “Is the word spelt p-u-t or p-u-t-t?’’ she asked the instructor. “P-u-t-t is correct,’’ he replied. “Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a vain attempt to do the same thing.”

A guy walked into a proshop with a gorilla. “Is anyone interested in a little wager? I’ve got $500 here that says my gorilla can hit the ball longer and straighter than anybody here at this club.” Everyone in the pro-shop started laughing. The newest pro at the club spoke up, “I’ll take you up on that wager. Meet you on the first tee.” When they reached the 585yard par-5 first tee, the trainer led the gorilla to the tee box

The pro was astonished. “That’s incredible! There’s no need for me to tee off. Here’s your money.” As the pro walked off the green, still shaking his head, he turned back to the trainer and said, “By the way, how does he putt?” The trainer responded, “Just like he drives: 500 yards, right down the middle, every time.”

“it makes the absolute best cup of coffee i’ve tasted in my entire life.” – Lewis Singer - Cooks Junction

AeroPress coffee tastes better because the ground coffee is totally immersed in the hot water, resulting in fast and extensive extraction of the flavour compounds. This method shortens brew time to 20 seconds or less, which avoids the unpleasant bitterness created by slower methods. The acid level of AeroPress brew is much less than conventional methods and coffee lovers are delighted by the fact that AeroPress brew is more friendly to their stomachs.
