There are even characters which depict the act of kindness you are doing. “They are a way to make it fun and more visually appealing to kids,”
On December 20 of last year, two Kamloops women officially launched a new App to the world in the hopes of making our planet a kinder place. A story of champions video
On January 8 Venture Kamloops had their premiere screening of Kamloops: A Story of Champions at the Sagebrush Theatre. A champion is a person who has defeated all opponents in a competition or series of competitions, so as to hold first place. Kamloops is home to many champions and this short film tells the story of these champions. There were many people featured such as Nancy Grenne-Raine, Mark Reechi and Corryn Brown to name a few. Pictured here are Colin O’Leary, Jim Anderson (back), Mike O’Reilly and Jamie Mayes of Venture Kamloops.
Unplug and Play Kamloops is getting ready to celebrate and support National Literacy Day on January 25. Interior Savings, Literacy in Kamloops, the City of Kamloops, KELLI, School District 73 and many other organizations have decided to make this a weeklong event. “Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week” runs from January 20 to 27, with many events happening around the city. On January 25, Kamloopsians will spend at least 15 minutes of fun in support of Family Literacy Day, an annual initiative developed by ABC Life Literacy Canada to encourage parents, children, teens and seniors to spend at least 15 minutes enjoying a learning activity every day. Join fellow supporters at the Henry Grube Education Centre for a free fun filled morning for families with young children located at 245 Kitchener Crescent from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Maureen Doll from Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative (KELLI) is urging families to get out of the house and turn off those electronics.“This year for the ABC Family Literacy Day the theme is 15 minutes of fun, but with a pirate twist,” says Maureen. “When people arrive, they will be given a treasure map. You go to each station and get a stamp and at the end you will go get your treasure which is a book collected during the Heap a Honda event.” “The whole purpose is to turn everything off. Come and enjoy some free fun together,” comments Maureen. “This time of year

we go stir crazy and there are lot of things you can be doing. We watch more TV than we typically do. It is time to put that all away.” The Family Literacy Week initiative, first celebrated by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999, has since been embraced by literacy and learning organizations such as schools and libraries in communities across Canada.
A new chapter in the history of Operation Red Nose ended as the designated driver program completed its 30th annual campaign. In Canada, 56,437 volunteers in 106 host communities provided rides for 82,530 motorists. In British Columbia, 4,347 volunteers took part in the Operation Red Nose tradition by providing 7,768 rides to motorists who did not feel fit to drive. Proud to have safely driven so many people home during holiday festivities, Operation Red Nose
volunteers ended the campaign with a true feeling of accomplishment. Kamloops was able to provide 1,129 safe rides home and raised close to $28,000 in donations. This year Kamloops residents used Operation Red Nose more than any other major metropolitan area. Kamloops even beat Langley, which had the most rides last year. Way to go Kamloops on being responsible during holiday celebrations.

An App made with love – continued from front connection to other people in the world,” comments Natalie. “We would put a lot of love into this App, which is very different than other Apps out there.” The response to the Club Kindness App has been outstanding and something truly special. “Our goal was to be a service. We hope that it continues to grow as we just launched it,” adds Natalie who is currently
teaching at Thompson Rivers University in their Business Degree Program where she is offering a different perspective on business that isn’t always about the bottom line. Think you can’t get a mortgage? Think again You hear it all the time. Perhaps it’s amongst friends at lunch, or maybe around the office cooler. Wherever you may be, you have heard someone say, “I’ll never be able to get a mortgage.” This sense of defeat is common place amongst all walks of life. People with a history of bad credit, recently divorced, the first time home buyer or even the home owner wanting an investment property, have all fallen victim to this common belief. Fortunately, there is a group who can make it happen. So until you hear no from these magicians, there is still hope. The mortgage brokers at Verico Integra
The Life and Death of Donald Duck Dinosaur Gord Base is doing a Dinosaur talk at the Kamloops Library on Saturday January 18 starting at 11:00am. This free presentation is on Earth – 66,000,000 years ago: Ancient North America, the Inland Seaway and the Life and Death of Donald Duck Dinosaur: Last Day of a Hadrosaur, a veggiesaurus. These shows are hands on with bones, shells and much more prehistoric props. The event is set to run for up to 90 minutes with a quick break at one point. Come down to the Kamloops Library located at 100-465 Victoria Street and learn a little bit about the animals that once inhabited this earth.
Mortgage Corporation is just that group that can make it happen. The team at Verico is headed up by the franchise owner Debra Owen. Deb is a force to be reckoned with. A licenced broker for the past 11 years, she has just celebrated her five-year anniversary as owner of her downtown branch. No challenge is too big for this lady. She has worked endless hours for clients trying to make deals happen. When asked about one of her favourite success stories she said, “I once worked with a couple for five years before they were able to get into a home. They never gave up though. There were some hard times but it paid off for them in the end. A true celebration!” Deb and the other brokers, Nicole Crichton, Jay Anderson and Lisa Paulsen are all local and longtime Kamloops residents. They all love living, working and raising their families in Kamloops. When asked what the team is all about Deb said, “Our focus is to provide exceptional service. It’s as simple as that. Our mandate is to build relationships that last because we have truly delivered on making our clients experience in getting or renewing a mortgage a great one. We want to be the people who get called and referred time and time again because we consistently deliver excellent service and the best rates.”

Claire, after retiring from a busy life in business, travels around the country visiting antique shops trying to find bargains. One day she goes to an antique shop in Stratford upon Avon, England. Here, Claire speaks to Victoria, the shop’s owner, “When I was in here last week I saw a big mug with a flat head that holds a lot of beer. I’d like to buy it.” “Sorry,” replied Victoria, “but I can’t possibly sell you that.” “Oh, what a pity, but why not?” inquired Claire. “Because,” said the owner, “that’s my husband.”

The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The accountants saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea. So after the conference, the accountants decide to copy the engineers on the return trip and save some money. When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the engineers don’t buy a ticket at all.
“How are you going to travel without a ticket?” says one perplexed accountant. “Watch and you’ll see,” answers an engineer. When they board the train the three accountants cram into a toilet and the three engineers cram into another one nearby. The train departs. Shortly afterward, one of the engineers leaves his toilet and walks over to the toilet where the accountants are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, “Ticket, please.”

Smartest thing on the Earth There were five people aboard an airplane having engine trouble getting ready to crash, however, there were only four parachutes. Everyone wondered what should be done to determine who should get the parachutes. One person said that he was the smartest thing that hit the face of the Earth and that he was too smart to die. So, he took one of the parachutes and jumped out of the aircraft. The second person said that she was too important to die, she had children and a family to take care of and they depended on her to care for them. So, she took one of the parachutes and jumped out of the aircraft. The third person said that he was too important to die because his family depended on him for survival. He was the head of household and the sole bread-
winner. So, he took one of the parachutes and jumped out of the aircraft. Finally, there were only two people left and one parachute. One person was a 12 year-old boy and the other was a 65 year-old man. The old man said, “Well son, I have lived a good life and you are too young to die, you have a long life ahead of you. So, you take the last parachute. The boy asked, “Why, Sir?” The old man said, “Well, there is only one parachute left.” The little lad said, “Sir, there are really two parachutes left.” The old gentlemen asked, excitedly, “Yeah? How?” “Well,” replied the boy, “you know that guy who thought he was the smartest and greatest thing that hit the face of the Earth? He grabbed my backpack.”
