Spirit of Christmas rides the rails again The hum of the rails is once again alive this holiday season here in Kamloops. Our beloved 2141 Heritage Train has overcome its difficulties and is back on the tracks bigger and better and in perfect health. “It’s been three years since we ran our last Spirit of Christmas Train,” explains manager of rail tour operations Roseanne Nelson. “We had our last train in 2012. We are pretty excited about this.” For those who have followed the history of the 2141 Heritage Train in Kamloops will know that our beloved rail staple first came to be in 1912. She spent her early years hauling freight, passengers and mixed trains on the prairies and was converted to burn oil in 1948. She spent her last working years on Vancouver Island. The train then sat at Riverside Park, a play toy for all the area children. In 1994 the work began to restore the old beauty to her former glory. She ran throughout the 2000’s giving thousands of passengers rides throughout the region right up until three years ago when mechanical requirements saw her retreat back to the yard to undergo a series of repairs. Those repairs finished earlier this year and after a shortened summer season will see the glorious 2141 return to the rails to spread the Spirit of Christmas to Kamloops residents. “The Spirit of Christmas rail tour is a whimsical one-hour ride through the wintry Kamloops night, capturing the magic of an old-fashioned Christmas,” furthers Roseanne. “Lights, traditional carols, hot chocolate and gingerbread...these are the sights, sounds and aromas of the season. Sneak a rare peak at Mrs. Claus’s kitchen and see the elves hard at work. What a lovely opportunity to build special memories with your loved ones!” There are something about trains; the chug of the choo, the sound of the trestles and tracks that appeal to kids of all ages. No matter if you are five or 75, trains bring wonderment to all. One of our oldest forms of transportation, a trip on the 2141 Heritage Steam Engine will be an experience you won’t soon forget. The holiday season means many things to many different people. In its truest essence, no matter who you are, the Christmas season is all about celebrating family and love. It is a time to truly cherish what you have to be grateful for; your health, your family, the overabundance of wealth in our lives. This train trip - continued on page 2

The 8th Annual Shoe Memorial was held on Sunday, December 6 at St. Andrews on the Square. December 6 marks the anniversary of the 1989 Ecole Polytechnique massacre and is the National Day of Remembrance of Action on Violence Against Women. Here in Kamloops, people gathered to remember and honour murdered and missing women. Each pair of shoes donated to the Shoe Memorial represented a woman who was either murdered or is missing and after the memorial, the shoes were donated to the Women’s Shelter for women in need.

Tis the season to keep your gifts “Out of Sight” of thieves Theft from vehicles occurs throughout the year. City of Kamloops Community Safety continues to work at reminding the public to secure their valuables while shopping.

2141 heritage train - continued from front is one of those experiences that will help you to achieve this. An hour away from all the hustle and bustle to immerse yourself in the lights, sounds and smells of family and joy. Getting on the train is easy but you better hurry. There are only six Spirit of Christmas train tours this year. Starting on Thursday, December 17 there is a train every night at 7:00 pm except Sunday and two tours at 4:00 pm on Saturday and Monday. There are only 228 seats on the trains and when they are gone, they are gone. You can buy tickets online at www.kamrail.com or by calling the office at 250-374-2141. Tanya Orozco, freelance

Emterra’s contract renewed Emterra Environmental is continuing to provide recycling services to the people of Kamloops and contributing to the city’s efforts to grow recycling and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. On December 1, the City of Kamloops awarded Emterra a new contract to process and market recyclables collected through its residential curb side recycling collection program. The new contract extends Emterra’s service to the community that began in 2007. “Emterra is pleased to have been selected by the City of Kamloops through it’s competitive bid-

ding process,” said Ed Walsh, Emterra’s VP of operations. “This award is testament to the quality and level of service that our employees provide the citizens of this great city.” “It also recognizes Emterra’s steadfast commitment to growing recycling in the community and increasing the amount of waste being diverted from landfills.” Added, Marty Gibbons, president of the United Steelworkers Local 1-417, “We are extremely pleased with the City of Kamloops’ decision to continue with Emterra for processing recyclable materi-

als. This means local jobs will stay in Kamloops.” The City of Kamloops expects the amount of mixed recyclables collected annually to more than double to 15,000 tonnes over the life of this contract. Ed Walsh said Emterra is excited to participate in this growth and looks forward to helping Kamloops achieve its goal of reducing greenhouse gas by 45 per cent by 2020. “The residents of Kamloops are keen recyclers,” Walsh said, “and we intend to work alongside the city and residents to reach and exceed recycling goals.”

Regimental Ball raises funds for United Way Kamloops RCMP Regimental Ball took place on October 17 where RCMP Officers enjoyed a formal evening gala along with members of the community, sponsored by British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC). On November 18, the RCMP and BCLC were pleased to present a cheque for the amount of $42,500 to the United Way as a result of the funds raised from this tremendous evening. The proceeds will directly support the United Way Community Fund in Kamloops and those initiatives that stimulate change, embrace the possibility of a better life, and make our community strong. On behalf of Kamloops RCMP and BCLC, Supt. Brad Mueller would like to thank the community for their attendance and all the sponsors for their generosity and support in making the night such a success.

Volunteer with Kamloops Immigrant Services Kamloops Immigrant Services is looking for Community Connections Mentors. A special thank you to Manshadi Pharmacy The kind of service you get from your small local businesses is like none other. I “forgot” to pick up some very important medication Friday night. I called Missagh from Manshadi Pharmacy after hours feeling a little awkward since it was my own dang fault. He was nothing but accommodating and met me at his downtown location after hours. I cannot thank him enough. I get excellent service every time I go in but this was truly above and beyond. Jodi Lawrence

Cuts for Kids

Once again, Community Safety volunteers are focusing their efforts on parking areas in retail locations, targeting shoppers during the holiday period. “Safe for the Season” tip cards containing information on vehicle crime prevention practices will be left on windshields, while the volunteers patrol the parking lots. They will also be engaging with shoppers to remind them of the importance of securing their purchases out of sight, along with any other valuables. “Ultimately, the best practice is to take your parcels out of your vehicle at the earliest opportunity. Thieves On Monday, November 30, the lovely ladies at the Manhandler Barbershop on 4th Avenue are shopping too, so held their “Cuts for Kids” event where you could bring in a new unwrapped toy and don’t make your vehicle exchange it for a haircut! The Kamloops Blazers held their annual Food Bank Night on Friday, December 4 and on Saturday, December 5, held their annual Teddy Bear Toss and have announced that 2215 bears, 653 winter accessories, 2500 pounds of food was collected and $1400 was raised!
The 2500 pounds of food collected and $1400 will all go to the Kamloops Food Bank to help families in need in our community.
The teddy bear and winter accessory numbers are both up from last season’s numbers of 1,856 teddy bears and 497 winter accessories. The Teddy Bear Toss game is a tradition that started in Kamloops during the 1993-94 season. It is estimated over 50,000 teddy bears have been collected and distributed in the community over the past 22 years. In January, the Blazers will deliver the bears to patients at Royal Inland Hospital. Everything collected from the weekend will be donated locally. The Kamloops Blazers would like to thank the fans for their generous contributions. Photo: Tricia Mercuri

echo stargazer Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’re a social and festive whirl as the holiday season begins. Past lessons have set in and you’re finally ready for your next step. Love arrives from the past as an old friend drops in to say hello. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’ll look like a Scrooge if you keep forcing everyone to work late. Projects can wait as love has moved onto group activities, networking and social fun. Yes, you can take your business cards with you. You might even be surprised when that cute elf from down the hall asks for one. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re still trying to escape for the holidays or at least connect with someone from a distance but love has you spending time at the office. If you could somehow step away from the computer you’d see an office romance unfold in front of you. Friends will let you down. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Work is stressful and the trouble is going to stay. Restructure your approach and smile throughout the process. It’s just a little bump on your journey so find a way through but take notes. There’s a lesson that will guide your next journey. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Are you still causing problems in love or are you just looking out for yourself? Both answers stem from the same problem so clean it up and clear it out. No one wants relationship drama over the holidays. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You might be tired from running around just to meet your daily goals but love is looking directly at you. If you’re looking long term in love then take a chance and say hello. A cheque arrives lighter than expected. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Someone close to you might be sick or you might be feeling under the weather. Either way, watch your health. You’re in the process of restructuring your relationships and not everyone will make the cut. Be careful that you don’t shuck something magical in the purge just because circumstances wouldn’t allow a fit last time. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’re feeling extra frisky, flirty and playful. Yes, there are problems at home and health might not be the greatest but if you get past simple worries you’ll see there’s a smile on your face shining for the world. Let the world smile back. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Home and play are your themes for this week. Money arrives to help with a home renovation and the results will put a proud smile on your face. Go ahead and strut your stuff. You earned this time to play. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Communications of all kinds fill the week with festive conversations and holiday cheer. You’re working extra hard at making money but it’s your home that’s the major focus right now. Invite the gang over for an evening at your place. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Love explodes for Libra. Yes, you’re in a money cycle and deciding what’s most important for your own security and happiness but your aggressive nature is going to cause a major splash in the realm of love. It can go either way so stay focused and don’t lose yourself in the battle. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Your money is taking hits everywhere you look but you’re resourceful and you know how to make more. Keep your eyes on the bigger picture and don’t get distracted by those who won’t be around in a couple of weeks. Love has entered Scorpio and it’s your time to play.
