Chug-a, chug-a, choo, choo! We all grow up knowing the infamous sound of the choo choo train. Trains are a staple of any childhood. We were all excited to see the train roll alongside us on the highway, pass by us in town and the fortunate few who actually got to ride on one, well that was like a dream come true for a little one. This is half the Dec 17/18 reason why the annual CP Holiday Train is such a hit with friends and family of all ages. There is almost nothing more festive than a train rolling into town decorated to the hilt with flashing lights and holiday décor. The only thing that could top that is the reason for its visit. Each year since 1999, the Canadian Pacific Railway has run a special holiday train, which rolls from Gift CertifiCate to:city to city from: entertaining folk and amount: collected food items for their local food banks. This year they will hit over 150 locations throughout Canada and the United States on Gift certificates 25% Off their journey. CP gives the perfect Genesis Fashion & Beauty Complex, example of how corporate giving 3-319 Victoria St. 250-374-9755 can be made fun and meaningful. CP gets the joy of giving all while showing massive amounts of people along the way how meaningful gestures can balloon and take on a force of their own. Last year alone the CP Holiday Train helped raise $42,000 and 3200 pounds of food for us locally. Can you imagine that all across Canada and the Northern United States? Since its inception, CP estimates it has raised $7.4 million and

three million pounds of food for local communities. “The train is absolutely magical,” says Bernadette Siracky of the Kamloops Food Bank. “It looks like it is right out of a movie, it takes your breath away. It’s not everyday you see a train with tens of thousands of lights roll up, open a boxcar stage and see Santa and performers. It’s just magical!” Food, money and lights aren’t the only thing that make this a special evening though, the two brightly decorated trains making the fundraising trek also bring with them musicians who will play more than

150 free concerts from their boxcar stage. The CP Holiday Train will be rolling into town on December 16. The train will arrive behind Interior Savings Center, at 4:45pm and the show will begin at 5:15pm. Jim Cuddy and Tracey Brown will be performing. For those who are not familiar, Jim Cuddy is of Blue Rodeo fame and Tracey Brown is a former member of Canada’s most awarded Country band, The Family Brown. Their performances will surely dazzle and delight. You can enjoy the musical stylings while you join in on other festive activities behind

Interior Savings Centre courtesy of the Kamloops Food Bank. The concerts are free, but you’re encouraged to make a donation to the local food bank—either a non-perishable food item or a cash donation. All contributions stay here in our local community. “We have hotdogs, hamburgers and hot chocolate starting at 3:30pm,” finishes Bernadette. “This is the earliest the train has every come into Kamloops so we are really hoping that people make plans to bring their kids after school. On December 6, 1989 fourteen women were murdered in the Montreal Massacre. December 6th became Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women with hopes of raising awareness to end violence against women. Shoes were collected from various donation sites in Kamloops and each pair of shoes represents a woman who was murdered or missing.

Keep parcels safe and “Out of Sight” this season Theft from vehicles occurs throughout the year. City of Kamloops Community Safety continues to work at reminding the public to secure their valuables while shopping. Volunteers and the RCMP will be out patrolling retail parking lots and handing out crime prevention tip cards to the public. Shopping malls, parking lots and curbside parking are all

prime target areas for thieves, so Community Safety is using stickers to convey the simple message of securing your valuables. The “Out of Sight” campaign partners with businesses to educate consumers about the potential risk of theft from vehicles by placing the stickers on their retail bags. “Not only do these stickers act as another reminder to the public, they also demonstrate our

Well wishes for RCMP Cpl. Michaud As of December 8, Cpl. Jean Rene Michaud, of Kamloops RCMP, continues his recovery following the shooting incident that occurred on Wednesday, December 3. Although still in intensive care, Cpl. Michaud is now conscious and able to speak to his family. His medical progress is very uplifting news for his family, colleagues, and the community as a whole. Fellow RCMP officers from across the country, colleagues in Kamloops and the general

public have been incredibly generous with their well wishes and contributions to the Michaud family during this difficult time. Kamloops RCMP Major Crimes Unit continues to work on the case surrounding this incident in preparation for upcoming court dates. Although other arrests were made during the subsequent investigation, Kenneth Michael Knutson remains the only individual charged directly in relation to the shooting of Cpl. Michaud.

BUSINESS PROFILE

A yarn to spin at Electrictree Yarns It was three years ago when Caroline Dick and her mother Patricia Donnelly welcomed us to their brand new store, Electrictree Yarns. Bright, festive and full of colour and wonder from the outside, the store does not fail to live up to its first impressions. The brightness carries through to the inside, seen within all their lovely yarns and the friendly staff as well. Caroline herself, who may be one of downtown’s most recognized faces, can be found there most days working on a project, giving helpful advice and explaining to interested consumers the differences between yarns as well as demonstrating just what a difference a quality yarn makes. “After three years I still love it,” tells Caroline. “The amount of fun here is only matched by the number of hand dyed yarns we carry. That’s what really separates us from other stores is we carry only all natural fibres. I also personally work as the wholesale representative for Ancient Yarns out of Calgary, they are 100 per cent Canadian. The wool is all milled in Canada and dyed in Canada. They are huge, they have been featured in Vogue Knitting.” In addition to her wonderful and colourful all natural fibres, Electrictree Yarns has a variety of spinning supplies and other accessories including buttons, needles, patterns, magazines and books. What really demonstrates their dedication to customer service is their kid friendly policy and Friday night knit night open houses, which are lovingly referred to as Knitters Anonymous. You can drop by the store anytime and it is likely there will be someone there who can help guide you

Mr. Boehmer will discuss the recruiting and training of Okanagan soldiers in 1914 and early 1915. Topics include the Canadian Militia Myth, motivations for enlist-

The 1914 Christmas Truce on the front Lines in Flanders and France is examined and although Canadian troops weren’t on the line during this truce, it does highlight the ironic definition of an enemy. Individuals living with mental health and substance use disorders will benefit from Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams and a crisis response team providing targeted supports for Kamloops, Kelowna and the Cariboo-Chilcotin, a first-oftheir kind for the Interior, Health Minister Terry Lake announced recently. “While we have a strong base of services for people with mental health and substance use issues, there are some clients who require more intensive intervention and support to live a healthier life,” said Lake. “This will be possible with these new ACT and crisis response teams, and is just one example of work going on throughout the province to support those in need of additional support.” Funding for the ACT teams and the crisis response team is provided jointly, with Interior Health contributing $2 million and the Ministry of Health pro-

viding $2 million for a total of $4 million. “ACT teams provide a very intensive, team-oriented range of supports for individuals with serious mental health issues and substance use challenges,” said Kamloops South Thompson MLA Todd Stone. “I’m proud these teams will now help our communities, and hope to see the same successes ACT teams have shown in other areas of the province.” Different from traditional programs, as the name states, the ACT team reaches out directly to clients 24 hours per day, seven-days-a-week, making client contact in the community as often as two to three times per day, based on individual needs. Interior Health is in the process of hiring staff for the ACT and crisis response teams, and hopes to see them in place by February with clinical programs starting in the late spring and early summer.

Celebrate Christmas with KSO Kamloops Symphony will be joined by 16-year-old violin soloist Julien Haynes for Christmas with the KSO. Haynes is the Kamloops Festival of the Performing Arts Symphony Award winner. He has been studying violin since he could hold one. A regular provinciallevel competitor, Haynes also received Best of Festival in Penticton in 2014 and Most Promising Performer in Kelowna. Other young performers will also join Kamloops Symphony musicians on stage. The Kamloops Symphony Music School’s Youth String Orchestra will play alongside professional musicians for all but one piece in the programme. The nine string players that make up the youth string orchestra have played portions of the Christmas performance for the past three years. They attend both group and private lessons at Kamloops Symphony Music School and are high school students ranging from Grades 10 to 12.

Christmas with the KSO is a programme designed to celebrate the season. The evening will start off with Philip Lane’s Wassail Dances. It is one of a number of his works themed around the Christmas season. It was originally commissioned by the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra and premiered in 1973. Lane made a career reconstructing lost film scores and is known for his light music compositions and arrangements. Haynes will perform two movements from Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is one of the most popular romantic violin concertos. Bruch began composing at nine years old and wrote over 200 works. Christmas with the KSO will run for two performances: December 13 at 7:30pm and December 14 at 2:00 pm at Sagebrush Theatre. Tickets are availble at Kamloops Live! DOWNTOWN ECHO

December 11, 2014 n 11

ECHO STARGAZER DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Happy Birthday and watch the spending! The holidays are almost here and it’s your birthday but don’t go too overboard. Expect a pleasant surprise. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) As Venus enters your sign mid-week you can expect people and opportunities to naturally be attracted to you. Expect strangers to walk up and say ‘hi’. Yes it’s weird, but you’re shining. Have fun. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Forgive and forget. This week is all about love and getting into the holiday spirit. Humbug you say perhaps… Until you learn the person who has your eye secretly wants to join your festivities. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Finally, some calm waters. You’ll be busy with a whirlwind of social engagements but as the festive spirit hits, everything will flow beautifully. The past is about to come calling. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The festive season hit and you’ll want to get out and play! You’re buoyant off a recent success that is expanding your social circle and adding to your pocketbook. Love is waiting at the bookstore. DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Expect extra hours at work but the bosses have noticed and you’re going to be amply rewarded. The perks arrive just in time for a smart new romance. An inheritance is on the way. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) Go get ‘em, Gemini. Love is still in the air and it’s waiting for you to make your move. Don’t worry about being perfect. Just say hello. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) Business once again takes the center stage. You’ll be looking at your finances and how to make your nest egg grow. Sure you’d like to take a break but making money and taking care of the family always come first. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22) You’re radiating love and happiness and the world notices. Be beautiful this week and take a chance on yourself. You’re luckier than you realize. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Take a well-deserved break but when you return watch for accidents. The pace is going to pick up in your absence but you’ll be ready for it. A new project gathers steam. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Children take on a greater importance as you’ve found a new desire to shine and play. Home life smooth’s out and some will be adding to the family! DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Recent success should be explored further. Follow your trail of “yeses”. If someone says “no”, remember - there are a lot of other people who are waiting to share your gifts. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist.
