Party time!
Echo delivery staff (L-R around table) Marilee Manning, Wayne Kulchyski, Justin Lean and Joe Akram enjoyed an afternoon of goodies at the Echo staff lunch on December 15. Without this team, we couldn’t bring you the good news each week!
A full year of community spirit in downtown Kamloops – continued from front tle plays that offer lots of quick changes, crazy characters and musical interludes. Dušan Magdolen from Project X Theatre said, “The Rivertown team assembled for 2016 is so committed, hardworking and entertaining, that we are just so proud to have had a hand in the process and look forward to future years helping bring theatre to summer audiences.” Speaking of Project X, following the closing of Wizard of Oz and Munsch Upon a Time, organizers announced that X Fest 2016 was best attended X Fest in the company’s history! Following news of Gord Downie’s terminal brain cancer and the final Tragically Hip tour, the public outcry to experience one last glimpse of this iconic Canadian group was so strong that the band partnered with the CBC to make their final show available to the masses via radio, television and Internet. Kamloops hosted two screenings at Riverside Park and McDonald Park. Proceeds raised
at the August 20th event supported the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research Fund. The BrewLoops Beer Festival schedule was teeming with many exciting, thirst quenching events. The festival’s most glittering affair, The Cask Prohibition Night took place on October 1 as The Rex was transformed into The RexA-Million Club, a ritzy nightspot. Participants and performers got out their finest gangster and glamorous gun moll gear to capture the Prohibition-era spirit! Live music was performed by Michael Rault, Caitlin Goulet and Kira Haug and Studio 253 Dancers appearing as ‘Dixies Dames’. Of course, a slew of unique cask beers, craft ciders and delicious nibbles were offered by 11 local restaurateurs. The 2nd annual Art in the Dark boasted black lights, art battles, body painting, live music and dance performances. The Kamloops Arts Council fundraiser was better than ever. Interactive art stations, the glow in the dark photo booth and incredible, magical
dance acts that made for the most unique artistic and social experience that Kamloops has ever seen. Downtown Kamloops had the market cornered on all kinds of creepy events to thrill and delight ghouls and goblins of all ages. The Kamloops Heritage Railway hosted the Ghost Train with a new layer of theatricality added by Allandra Barton, Krystine Lucas and Celine Majcher from Thompson Rivers University’s Actors Workshop Theatre. Operation Red Nose, a staple of holiday road safety, celebrated their twentieth anniversary this year, Katie announced, “Operation Red Nose provided 1211 safe rides home in 2015, raising $30,863 in donations.” The Kamloops Arts Council and the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association illuminated the heart of Kamloops with the holiday spirit throughout the month of November and beyond. The Lumière Lantern Festival coincided with Lights in the Night and downtown Kamloops
was alight with holiday and community spirit. The 42nd annual Senior Light Tour took place on December 8; the well-established, heart warming event, boasted over approximately 600 seniors, 22 city buses and a whole lot of volunteers. Following a tour of the Kamloops’ best Christmas lights, seniors visited the Sandman Centre for a lot of carolling, a bit of dancing, a spot of tea and a heaping cup of Christmas cheer. The choirs of Kamloops and The City of Kamloops Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department gathered on December 13 for the 19th Annual Choral Rhapsody. Proceeds from the event support of the Kamloops Food Bank. From New Year’s Day to New Year’s Eve, the downtown core is the heart and soul of Kamloops. Between the concerts, special events, seminars and festivals, there is always something to look forward to. Alicia Ashcroft, freelance

COMMUNITY
2016 has been a year of challenge, change and growth When given lemons you have to try to make lemonade. I was faced with some big hurdles this year that I thought I would never get over. I had to step far out of my comfort zone and fight for what was right and make decisions that impacted our whole family. No, not a break up, I’m still happily married! With the support of friends, family and the right professionals we are on the right track. Out of the darkness comes the light. I learned that I am stronger than I thought but I also can’t do it all! During this difficult time in my personal life I tried to keep a brave face Jodi was thrilled to find Bon Jovi on professionally, which was incredibly the cover of People. difficult. I always try to take part in local events so the BCLC Midsummer Jam and Ribfest were a given. I spent almost every Saturday at the Farmers Market and what a fabulous way to start a day. My most recent highlight was Mamma Mia, which was such a great production. I’m sure looking forward to few days off over the holidays to recharge. Thank you as always for your support of our ‘good news’ newspaper. We have a unique product that connects you to your customer with our creativity and enjoyable content. “I am the one thing in life I can control” What a year. It’s been like living in the Twilight Zone on an intersection of a Margaret Atwood novel, by way of George Orwell. Admittedly, my year began rather beautifully. Day drunk in New Zealand, sand between my toes and whatnot. Holiday me is my most fabulous self. She is fun, good humoured, wears flowing dresses and big hats, eats passionately and enjoys long walks on the beach. It felt like the holiday was never going to end and suddenly, the plane is landing in Vancouver. I’m listening to Adele’s Hello and grimacing mournfully towards the grey skies and slick tarmac. Back to work. Back to routine. Goodbye holiday me. Hello hellish chill of January. After 14 plus hours of flight and airport purgatory time, no matter how badly you want to cling to those bright and shiny holiday feelings, all you want to do is just get home. By the time Clinton’s campaign manager quietly invited everyone to go home, I was drunk and ugly crying on the couch. Not because a woman didn’t win, but because such a vile, ignorant, bigoted, misogynistic beast did. What the future holds, no one knows. We bank on 2017 being a better year and there’s nothing guaranteeing that. What can we bank on? If I may be so bold and to borrow a quote from Wait for it, from Hamilton: “I am the one thing in life I can control.” Yup, that’s it, that’s all. It’s so simple. You control you. You control how you react to and how you receive the best and the worst. When you catch yourself sinking in the quicksand of hopelessness, ask yourself: what can I do better?

This spring, I rediscovered my artistic side when a friend talked me into entering the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s Art Alley. Painting among actual artists was a little intimidating but fun at the same time. Having a Red Collar beer afterwards took the edge off, though. In July, a few friends and I started doing drawing challenges and posting our drawings on Facebook, which has not only been a lot of fun but also good practice. I didn’t go on a holiday anywhere this year but after trading my boys’ old trampoline for a friend’s old tent trailer, my son and I went camping for the first time together. It was a nice addition to my love of the great outdoors and new love of paddle boarding. Exploring many of the lakes and back roads in the area has been a fun adventure and has felt way too overdue since I’ve lived in Kamloops for 15 years now! I had an amazing summer of reunions with best friends. I travelled to the Kootaneys to celebrate Siobhan’s birthday. I went to Enderby to catch up with Tina, who moved to Alberta last year. Kim, from my Sheridan Lake days, came here to visit and it was great to see her after too many years! The best reunion though was with Melissa, who I met when I was 17 in 100 Mile. I hadn’t seen her in 20 years and we both cried when we saw each other! I will always be grateful

echo stargazer Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) It may have felt like the fates were out to get you in 2016 as unexpected events stripped away cherished perks you’d been accumulating. But there’s a lesson hidden within the struggle. Love wants you to shine from within. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) This holiday season you’ll be attracting money and venturing back into the public spotlight. Don’t hog another’s thunder. You’re on a roll but you’re not the only sign that’s shining. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) With the ship finally floating again, it’s time to set course and get going. For Aquarius, the holidays aren’t about down time. You have an opportunity to reconnect and plot your destiny for 2017. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) A boost of energy lifts humble spirits and marches you into the holidays with a “look at what I’ve just accomplished” attitude. Shine brightly and love will reflect your efforts. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The holiday spirit helps to heal old wounds and boost the love energy all around you. Get out and have some fun. Love is favouring a social Aries. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Vacations are supposed to be a time of rest and recuperation but you’re fretting details and worried about work. Do the rounds and say hello to old friends. Their success holds secret keys to open new doors. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Love is waiting on a distant shore but travel might not be possible. Find another way to reach out and show your love. Creativity returns big rewards. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Sparks begin to sizzle as you say yes to a holiday romance. The heart is yearning for some home time so invite the gang over and see who tags along. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) You’re talking a good game but love wants more. Action is the signal that love is waiting for. Double check expenses as holiday bills begin to pile up. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You’re entering a creative cycle, which will bring a lot of fun into your day. Go easy on a loved one who asks for something unusual. Friends reflect back the change in your outlook. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) The holidays can be emotionally draining for a giving sign like yours. Even as the hustle and bustle begin to peak remember to take time for yourself to appreciate how much you’ve matured and to set new goals in love. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) The holiday spirit favours those who wear smiles. Just because you’re tired and emotionally reflective this week doesn’t mean you can’t share in the joy that’s practically begging you to play. Attention! Please read! I need to spend less time on the computer, so December 31st will be my last day on Facebook for the year 2016. I will return sometime on January 1st, 2017. Thank you for understanding, I’ll miss all of you!
