The Echo staff decided to enjoy a sunny spring afternoon with lunch on a downtown patio.

There is a reason that so many people make New Year’s resolutions. As the calendar flips, it brings with it 365 blank pages ready to be written upon. That is 365 different opportunities to rewrite the path of your life, to rewrite history and to bring change to your world. That’s not to say that our past is clouded, 2014 was a wonderful year here in Downtown Kamloops. With every passing year, the landscape of the downtown core grows and changes just like we do in our own personal lives. Here in our little neighbourhood, we have seen good deeds done, businesses open and flourish and progress take place. Don’t believe us? Let’s take a quick look back month by month to see what happened here in Downtown Kamloops. In January we heard a good story about RIH

Amber gave back a far and local grocer Larry Bertoncini gave back here. Larry helped provide door prizes to the Alzheimer’s Society Walk for Memories in honour of family. We even had two Kamloops women, Natalie Peace and Carrie Neal launch a kindness app. If that wasn’t enough, we then featured local resident Wai Hung Ma who was born with cerebral palsy and has dedicated his life to breaking down barriers and spreading an antibullying message. In February the Kamloops Women Resource Society set sail on V-Day aimed at ending the violence against women, City of Kamloops

The end of an era

Downtown delivery divas

Kristina Moller decided to team up with downtown delivery expert Kelly Trainor (left) and share the duty of delivering to the outer regions of Downtown Kamloops. These lovely ladies have worked together previously as KCBIA CAP team members before joining The Echo staff!

Good deeds all year in Downtown Kamloops - continued from front CanGo Grannies. They over the years have dedicated much time, effort and money to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which supports grandmothers raising grandchildren to the AIDS pandemic. In June is the annual Kamloops Relay for Life with the summer not slowing down all the charitable efforts. August saw Team Super Everybody spring to action and September saw the Out of the Ashes Into the Dust bike camp, which helps youth to achieve a healthy lifestyle away from alcohol and drug abuse. October may be our favourite month of all as it features ICS’s It’s Cool to be Kind Week, a week full of goodness and random acts of kindness and the CanItal Ladies annual Fashion Show. And last but not least just this Decem-

ber we highlighted Ric and Mai over at the Son Mai Spa for all their humanitarian efforts in Vietnam and Cambodia. They are just about to embark on their trip and we couldn’t have been prouder to cover it. As you can see, there is no shortage of good deeds and charity here in Downtown Kamloops. This is just a very small snapshot into what goes on down here on a yearly basis. It would take a novel to be able to mention them all and for that we are grateful. We are grateful you give us such wonderful and joyous events to be part of, to write about and to share with other Kamloops residents. We had a great 2014 and we can’t wait to see what you all come up with in 2015. Happy New Year! Tanya Orozco, freelance

2014 has been quite a year both personally and professionally. It started out with a nice, much enjoyed, vacation to Mexico at the end of January. We managed to escape during the cold snap and while I thought about everyone at home in the -20 degree weather I couldn’t help but think about the nearly 50-degree difference as I enjoyed 30 degree beach days. I had never ventured to Mexico before and I do have to say I enjoyed having plenty of personal shoppers. I had a guy for everything; a blanket guy, a hat guy, a bag guy, a fish on a stick guy they really have thought of everything! This spring we also had the good fortune of being able to invite my mom to come and live with us. She made the big move from Sicamous and we have enjoyed being able to spend extra time together, gardening, canning and baking. I have had a little extra time to spend with her, as most of you may know I have passed on the publishing reins at the Echo and Edge Publishing to my friend Jack Bell. Edge Publishing has been a huge part of my life for the last 12 years and although I do miss it (a little) I am happy to be able to spend some much needed time with family and pursue some of my other interests and hobbies that I’ve missed out on over the past decade. Although I am not currently there full time, I

am not far away. I still have my desk and spot in our Echo office. How could I not? Visiting and being part of the Down-

town Kamloops and North Shore business community was and still is the highlight of my day. They are such wonderful nieghbourhoods full of some of the most thoughtful, caring and hardworking individuals that I have ever met. I am always excited to run into old friends on the street, visit your businesses to do a little shopping and come together to work on our common goals. I wouldn’t be able to give that up ever. The most important thing to remember is that change is good. Over the 12 years that I have worked with Edge Publishing I have seen our neighbourhoods grow, I have seen businesses expand and flourish and I have seen you, my friends, take challenges head on, rise to any occasion and do things above and beyond what anyone could ever expect. I wish you all the merriest of holidays and lets do coffee in the New Year! Wenda Noonan

Give bees a chance

Opinions of the people who matter – you.

Do you have any New Year resolutions?

The 2014 Walk for Peace, Social Justice and the Environment was held on Saturday, May 3 beginning at the Stuart Wood School and the Echo staff just wanted to “Give Bees a Chance”. On hand were a flowery Jody Tippett, her son Nathan, and Echo bees Carrie Harman and Ashley Demedeiros with Odin the ladybug.

Feeling privileged to be your neighbour As we approach the end of another calendar year it gives one an opportunity to reflect on things. This year is no exception. 2014 has proven to be a very exciting one for me personally as I acquired Edge Publishing. Along with the great responsibility this carries, I also would like to recognize a couple of facets this brings. First, I would like to thank our wonderful clientele and supporters. It’s been great to reconnect with so many of you both on the North Shore and Downtown. I look forward to continuing our relationship. It truly is an honour to hear how much you enjoy reading and connecting with The Echo newspapers each and every week. Of course none of this would be

possible without such a dedicated talented staff. Day in day out, week in week out, they bring it to the office in order to provide our readers such a wonderful product. All of this, of course, would not be possible without the efforts of one Wenda Noonan the last 12 years. Wenda’s creativity and passion made Edge Publishing what it is today. It is my hope that I may continue Wenda’s vision. We truly are blessed to live in such a caring, giving community. You never have to look far to see neighbours going over and above to help make it so. We at The Echo are privileged to be included. I wish all of you the very best for 2015. Jack Bell

Erin Johnson and family at La Sagrada Família during their travels to Barcelona. (Inset) Erin was happily welcomed back from her maternity leave when she returned in July! This is her adorable daughter Aurora who is constantly smiling or laughing.

Adventures in parenting 2014 was an adventurous year for my family. For the first half of the year I was on maternity leave. Spending so much time with Aurora was amazing. It was a year of firsts for Aurora: first step, first birthday, first sentence, and a growing vocabulary. She still has trouble with “L” and calls a few things by her made-up names, but she knows over 20 words now. She uses Mama and Dada a lot as well as Joe (our dog). She makes animal noises instead of the animal name. And her favourite words are “up”, “cheese”, “gohne” (instead of phone), “da” (short for dance), and “blebbleh” (roughly translates to “read me this book please”). 2014 has been hard on Joe. He had more teeth removed, poor little dog, there is so little we can do to help. He had his 7th birthday this year and has quite the little white beard coming in. Over the year his jealousy over Aurora has calmed down, but he still needs to be picked up

after we give her a lot of attention. I’m very proud of my husband Derek. In addition to running a successful business he competed in several Magic tournaments as a professional player. He and two friends placed 14 out of 200 teams in Barcelona, Spain. It was their first pro event so it was a big deal! Aurora and I tagged along on that once-in-a-lifetime trip. We sampled tapas and paella, walked La Rambla and took in all the Gaudi architecture we could find! Near the end of my maternity leave I was worried and stressed about returning to work. For two reasons: It was time to leave Aurora in the care of someone else and I might have forgotten how to do my job! Derek was very supportive and my worries disappeared as soon as I sat at my desk and my fingers started typing away, like I hadn’t missed a day of work! It’s been great to get back to work and join the adult world again! Erin Johnson

Love thy neighbourhood Why do business people choose to set up shop Downtown Kamloops? Because they love the neighbourhood! Downtown is an ideal environment for independent shops and the entrepreneurs that run them. These are people who are masters of their own business plan; this is why they choose not be in a mall. They are independent thinkers who build a business on customer service; they care about their customers and get to know them on a personal level. When they purchase products for their business they do so based on customer response and often choose items with specific customers in mind. The result is a shopping experience that includes attention to service and a unique product mix you can’t find anywhere else. These are business people who care deeply about the community they live in, they are involved in local activities and clubs; they give back in many ways, supporting local charities and groups. They employ local people who also love to be downtown and serve the clientele. In fact the 10,000 people who work downtown not only serve others, they are customers for the business community. They are already here, parked and in need of goods and services. The atmosphere downtown is very conducive to walking around, discovering treasures to obtain or meeting colleagues. Most people have ‘second offices’ for meetings in their favourite coffee shop and a lot of business gets done just by encountering people on the street. For people who work and live in the Downtown neighbourhood it’s their office, living room, dining room, patio, rec room, man cave, backyard,

playground and much more! Here is a small sampling of quotes from downtown business people: “We love being downtown,” exclaimed store owner Rosie of Castles and Cottages. “I actually live down here, and I love seeing and being a part of all of these privately owned stores. Each one is unique… It’s a very different shopping experience compared to shopping at franchised stores.” “We love the vibrancy of downtown, and the people down here,” said Denise of Aglow Bridal. “With me being in retail sales forever, I know a lot of people down here, and we are good friends with the other bridal store owners too! Downtown just works for us, we love it!” “We all live down here; we’re able to walk to work and can get to know all the people working down here as well,” said Alyssa of Kennell’s Shoes. “We always try to buy within the downtown core and support the other stores too. We love the sense of community there is between all of the businesses!” To learn more go to downtownkamloops.com and check out our “People of the Neighbourhood” features. We invite you to come explore our neighbourhood. One of the best things about Downtown Kamloops is it has never lost its small town charm. When you are downtown, you are part of a family – it’s the place where everyone knows your name. That genuinely friendly atmosphere is what will keep you coming back time and time again! It’s the little things in life

Carrie Harman (right) at her first Fireman’s Diamond Ball this year with friend and Echo freelance writer Tanya Orozco.

Sigh, it’s that time of year again… the year in review! My year hasn’t been a very exciting one, just your regular, run of the mill year, but that isn’t a bad thing at all! There are many consistent things that happen throughout the year that are most enjoyable. One being Kamloops Burlesque Monthly Showcase, which is my favourite monthly outing! There were many miscellaneous activities such as a long summer weekend with my sister at our uncle’s cabin at Deka Lake, getting a couple new tattoos, taking in local entertainment at The Blue Grotto,

Carrie zombied up for the annual Zombie Walk in Downtown Kamloops this October.

Music in the Park of course, a metal show at The Dirty Jersey and my annual ugly Christmas sweater party to name a few in no particular order. I even started a Pagan coffee meet up group that meets once a month at The Art We Are. Although I didn’t make it to Vegas for my 40th, I had the best time ever at Sun Peaks with most of my favourite people! I suppose unless we do something grand, we don’t consider the little things to be much, until you put them all together. Even though I didn’t have any elaborate plans or go on holidays anywhere, I make sure to make the most out of life by spending it with my family and friends, which is what it’s all about. I am so happy to have such great friends and wonderful kids, I couldn’t ask for more! I also am lucky to see so many friendly faces that come into our office on a regular basis. One thing I really enjoy about working downtown is the sense of community you don’t find in other areas of town. I look forward to seeing all our neighbours in the New Year. Although there have been many changes to the Echo staff over the last year, with people coming and going, it’s always been a great group of people to work with and for that I am grateful. 2014 has been a pretty good year and I think 2015 will be even better, hopefully starting with a nice surprise! Happy 2015! Carrie Harman

A cute bunny story

Don’t say goodbye

I was in a pet store picking up some pet food for my dog when I overheard the following conversation. A cute girl peaks over the counter and politely asks the sales representative. “I’m interested in buying a rabbit.” “Oh sure we’ve got lots of rabbits,” gushed the motherly sales representative. “Do you have any specific colour in mind? We’ve got some adorable white bunnies down this isle,” the lady exclaimed. “Oh,” said the cute girl with a wave of her hand, “I really don’t think my boa constrictor would care about what colour it is!”

A dog’s resolutions

The Echo held a potluck lunch party for Ashley Demedeiros and Russell Kutcher as they both departed as staff members. Ashley was filling in as our editor while Russell helped with the driving route for deliveries on the North Shore. Thank you both for your time with the Echo!

××I will not bark each time I see or hear a dog on TV. ××I will not steal underwear belonging to my mistress and then dance all over the back yard with it. ××I will not chew red crayons or pens, because my master will think that I am hemorrhaging. ××I must shake the rainwater out of my coat before I enter the house.

echo stargazer Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) As the year begins decisions need to be finalized about where to best place your energies for your biggest success. This week it looks like money is going to get the nod. Follow your heart and your dreams will take care of themselves. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Problems at work clear up in time for a fresh New Year beginning. And just in time! As your love life finally gets the boost you’ve been waiting for. Be aggressive not pushy and you’ll win the heart you’ve been wanting. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) As the year begins focus on what’s good and what you can accomplish in 2015. Work is going to be a problem and the past is looking for a fight but love is very strong and people are here to help. This week look for a “friend” to change the stakes. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The New Year begins on a lucky note so buy a lottery ticket and say hello to admiring glances. Work and time in the public spotlight fill the beginning of January. If things begin to unravel trust your natural leadership skills to help everyone through. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You’re looking for love, money and security but you don’t want to be tied down. You’ve been through enough and you look great. Walk away moments will be replaced with walk toward moments. Love is waiting in foreign eyes. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Karma catches up as you enter a tough patch with your closest relationships. It’s a time you can really get ahead financially if only you could pull the team together. Look to the future for success. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You begin the year attracting love and luck in your astro-sector of relationships. If single and someone winks go for it. If partnered up then grab your love and do something special like begin the year in each other’s arms. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Although the general energy of love has changed and changed again, you’re still astro-lucky! A lottery ticket to begin the year might be just what you need to jumpstart 2015. Love, luck and fun are your main themes for 2015. And watch the sweets. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Your New Year kicks off with a creative blast that borders on the frisky! If there’s a new love in your life then you’ll want to plan some fun and frolic. You’re a little aggressive with the chores and family is going to be a concern this astro-cycle. But this week love shines. Enjoy the new beginning. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Fate surprises once again but this time you’re ready. Say yes and invite them home. You’ve been working hard and there’s a lot for you to give but you have to know if the feelings are real before you take that chance. Your 2015 theme is sharing. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Keep pushing on that new business idea. Things may have been delayed and the usual monsters may have tried to get into the way but the new you is ready for a bigger slice of life. You’ve finally left the past behind and you’re ready for a fresh adventure. Go get ‘em! Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Money arrives to begin the year and this sets you off on a bit of a spending spree. Careful planning ensures that your cents don’t disappear as quickly as they arrived. The pace picks up but you’ll be ready. Love is waiting somewhere sensual and luxurious.
