Proud sponsor of laughing stock theatre

Imagine that… a talking cat! From the people that brought you the wildly popular “Cinderella – The Panto” in 2011, The Laughing Stock Theatre Society of BC is pleased to announce its December production of “Puss in Boots”. This is the classic fairy tale - like you’ve never seen before! In the United Kingdom a Pantomime, or “Panto” as it is affectionately called, is a form of highly entertaining interactive theatre, performed around the Christmas season for the entertainment of millions of families. Many of the stories are based on popular, even if slightly skewed, fairy tales and has something for everyone. This traditional British Panto will run at the Sagebrush Theatre from December 24 to 31, with both evening and matinee performances available. Puss in Boots – the Panto is by Lorraine Mason with additional material by Vance Schneider. As the Artistic director of the show, Vance says “Last year’s presentation proved to us that the desire to have affordable family entertainment available during the Christmas Season is overwhelming! With sold out shows, and word-of-mouth advertising that has EY fr earlug Jan 12.indd been continuing throughout the year, we realized that we needed to take the annual Panto to the next level.” Children love to see their favourite stories and characters played out on the stage, they particularly enjoy the physical comedy and audience participation. Everyone is encouraged to “dress-up” as their favourite character. If there is one thing that kids love to do, it’s dressing

1

up in costume! So come to the show as your favourite princess, hero or tree! Vance also noted, “Our auditions brought nearly 30 children into our chorus and the 18 principle actors performing are all local Kamloopians. Add to that a crew of 15 and we have a very big show!” Dame Washalot and a zany cast of characters will make up this year’s traditional British Panto. The adults will certainly get enough innuendo and double entendre of the “nudge-nudge, wink-wink” variety to keep them rolling in the aisles. Panto is guaranteed to give the whole family a rollicking good time and encompasses elements of physical or slapstick comedy, music, dancing and audience interaction. The characters are not what you’d expect, with women playing men, and men, ah, playing women... and... well you’ll have to see it to understand it! The costumes are always over-the-top and represent a carnival or circus type atmosphere. Matinees shows begin at 1:00pm on December 24, 26, 29, 30 and 31. Evening performances start at 7:00pm on December 27, 28, 29 and 30. Tickets are available now from Kamloops Live Box Office, 1025 Lorne Street, call 250-374-5483 or reserve online at kamloopslive.ca. There are seniors and family rates and admittance for children under five years is free. “Be ready for a fast-paced, show, bigger and better than last year!” remarks Vance. Show details and more information on The Art of Panto can be found at thelaughingstock.ca. Get your tickets today to see this hilarious extravaganza suitable for all ages. Jody Tippett

PST transition training available for businesses A recent survey by the BC Chamber of Commerce has revealed that 63 per cent of businesses do not feel prepared for the transition back to the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on April 1, 2013. Members from the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce were asked to respond to a survey distributed by the British Columbia Chamber of Commerce, asking if they feel prepared for the transition. The results reflected businesses of all sizes, sectors and regions of the province. 62 per cent were not aware of the changes that will be made to the PST, and 73 per cent did not feel they had received adequate information. “The Kamloops Chamber is making every effort to help our members with this transition,” states Maurice Hindle, president of the Kamloops Chamber. “We are planning more sessions so that our members are thoroughly informed on the matter.” On January 21, the chamber will be hosting a session for their members with the Ministry of Finance. An interactive workshop

with KPMG, focused on individual business sectors, is planned for early spring as well. For more information on the

transition back to the PST, businesses are encouraged to contact the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, the BC Chamber

website or any of the resources from the Provincial Government. The PST is being re-implemented on April 1, 2013.

The 5th Annual Shoe Memorial was held December 6, a day that also marked the anniversary of the massacre of 14 women that occurred on December 6, 1989 at the École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec. Pictured here is Lynn Chasse, organizer of the Kamloops Shoe Memorial, speaking to the crowd who gathered to pay respect and remember the lives of women and children lost to violence.

Electric vehicle charging station coming to the Kamloops Visitor Centre The City of Kamloops recently received funding from the Provincial Government in support of the installation of a new Level II electrical vehicle charging station at the Kamloops Visitor Centre. The new electric vehicle charging station will be installed in early March 2013 and will provide local and visiting drivers with a convenient place to charge their electric vehicle while staying at one of the local hotels or while shopping at the neighbour-

ing shopping centre, and is easily accessible off Highway 1. The Level II charging stations will be able to fully recharge an electric car battery within three to six hours, depending on the battery system in the specific electric vehicle. “Taking this initial step to make electric vehicle charging more widely available to local and visiting drivers supports several of the Sustainable Kamloops Plan goals. It strategically positions Kamloops as part of BC’s new

‘green highway’,” said Jen Fretz, Sustainability and Environmental Services Manager with the City of Kamloops. “If you own an electric vehicle or have ever thought of purchasing one, it will now be easier to recharge at new charging stations throughout the province and in Kamloops.” The Sustainable Kamloops Plan goals that will be directly supported from this new charging station include: helping to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels for transportation locally by 25

per cent by 2020; reducing transportation-related green house gas emissions to 2.4 tonnes per capita by 2020; and encouraging the use of alternate fueled motor vehicles in the community. The infrastructure incentives that support the City of Kamloops Visitor Centre charging station are part of the Province’s $2.74 million Community Charging Infrastructure Fund (CCIF) that will lead to 570 public charging stations across BC by March 31, 2013.

The Kamloops YMCA-YWCA recognizes an individual or organization in our community every year with a Peace Medal. The Awards Ceremony was held November 29 at Flavours of India. This year’s recipient, The Rotary Clubs of Kamloops Youth Exchange Program, was chosen because they have demonstrated a commitment to building peace and have motivated others to get involved. In the front are Colin Reid, CEO of the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA, Andrea Inwards, Assistant Governor, Rotary Club District 5060 and Sharon Carrell, Board President of the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA. Kamloops’ first Christmas Tweetup Two Twitter nuts, relatively new to the city, sure hope so. Angela MacIsaac, a.k.a. @that_angela, and Beth Anne Quirie, a.k.a. @ExploreKamloops, are hosting the first Kamloops for Christmas Tweetup. MacIsaac is back in Kamloops after a nine-year stint in Calgary. She was an active member of the social media community there and would like to be part of a similar movement here. “The social media community has done amazing things in Calgary, particularly with fundraising efforts and changing the way we view the city,” she says. MacIsaac was a co-organizer of the city’s largest social media-based charity drive, #YYC4Haiti, which raised $70,000 for the Canadian Red Cross earthquake relief fund in January 2010. “We used a website, Twitter and Facebook as our sole means of commu-

nicating the event,” she said. Quirie arrived in Kamloops from Edmonton this past summer. She also has seen the power of social media. “It can really change the way we communicate with each other,” she said. “It’s a really cool way to bring people together and make a big city feel a lot smaller.” A Very Merry Twitmas will be held at Central Station Pub on Sunday, December 16, starting at 3:00 p.m. Central Station will offer drink and food specials while the Tweeters gather and get to know each other. Both MacIsaac and Quirie have experience using social media for business and will be available to offer tips and answer questions. Cheerful giving to reach isolated seniors The Seniors Outreach Society (SOS) strives to assist seniors who are feeling lonely or isolated. The holidays can be a tough time for individuals who are on low incomes and are living on their own. The idea of a simple gift to a senior who is in such a position as this makes the holidays a lot less lonely for them. This year, SOS received many offers from different organizations to relieve some loneliness and isolation for the seniors they work with. These organizations want to give gifts to low income, isolated seniors during the Christmas season. Valley First is a partner in the Angel Tree Program, designed to help spread holiday cheer to the less fortunate members of our community by providing for them during the holidays. SOS is being provided gifts and donations by Valley First

and will be giving them to the seniors who are in need of these items the most. Employees at the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) are acting as Secret Santas for 20 low income and isolated seniors. They have purchased gifts for these

seniors based on suggestions and SOS will be delivering the gifts to these seniors’ homes. Another group of MCFD workers are “adopting” a low income senior couple for the holiday season by providing them with gifts. An employee of BCAA is also adopting a senior for the holidays and will

be providing them with gifts as well. Seniors will also benefit from the St. Peter’s Anglican church food hampers this year. The Seniors Outreach Society thanks each and every individual and organization for their contribution to the seniors they work with.

Jurors chosen for KAC Art Show Three Kamloops-area arts authorities are lined up to jury the Kamloops Arts Council’s Juried Art Show, which will take place February 16 to 24, 2013. TRU Visual Arts senior lecturer Alan Brandoli, Kamloops Art Gallery assistant curator Craig Willms, and internationally renowned artist Tricia Sellmer will lend their skills to the 3rd annual exhibit. “We’re thrilled to have such a great jury come together,” said Kathy Sinclair, manager of the Kamloops Arts Council. “It really demonstrates how collaborative our arts community is.” The Kamloops Arts Council Juried Art Show, held at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre each year, provides emerging and amateur local artists of all ages – youth to senior – with constructive criticism and visibility, as well as a chance to build their resume and compete with peers. All mediums are welcome; all submissions will be displayed in the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre for the duration of the show. Judging for first, second and third prizes ($300, $200, and $100, respectively), plus honourable mentions, will take place shortly before the exhibit opens, and jurors will announce the awards on opening night February 15. Artists of all ages and levels are encouraged to enter. The limit is two pieces per artist, and entry forms are available at www.kamloopsarts.ca. Deadline for entry is January 26.

Art from the river of mists

Errol Hillis’ spirit name is White Cloud. He is from the Kispiox reserve of the Gitxsan Nation, whose traditional territory runs along the upper banks of the Skeena or Xsan, “the river of mists”. Errol is a local indigenous artist who has literally carved himself a niche at the Golden Buddha located at 247 Victoria Street. In early September, Errol was afforded the opportunity to set up his carving station outside the store for curious passerby’s to witness his skill in carving traditional and modern Gitksan style masks and totems. With the colder weather upon us, he is still dedicated to his work, but has since moved inside the store. Shoppers who take a moment to chat with him will discover that he actually works in four mediums - painting, engraved jewelry as well as fabric design. Errol has been developing his skills and talents as a Northwest Coast artist for over 25 years. He deems his style to be universal and he specializes in one of a kindW arte h pieces ave that carry a depth of meaning and hold a connection to the land and spirit.

From January 7 to 12, the City of Kamloops will be hosting Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, a community initiative to help better inform the community about the myths and risks associated with gambling, while promoting responsible play and support services. The week will feature a number of events and local activities including a traveling mythbusting kiosk and a Responsible Gambling Open House to promote open discussion and information sharing in the community. “Our objective really is to engage a variety of audiences about responsible gambling and problem gambling in a fun and informative way,” said Jen Casorso, Recreation Supervisor, Social and Community Development. “By putting this event on here in Kamloops, we are creating positive change in regards to gambling issues and connecting people to local support services, if needed.”

Community organizers are currently seeking volunteers to take part in a BCLC training workshop in order to become kiosk facilitators. The kiosk will be located at various venues in the community including at the mall, seniors centres and Thompson River University and will feature resources and interactive games. The volunteer time commitment will include attending training sessions for four hours, followed by at minimum one shift of two hours in the community. Community members who are interested in volunteering during the week of January 7 to 12 or require more information can contact Kamloops@ bclc.com or 1-888-454-0088. For more information about Responsible Gambling Awareness Week in Kamloops, please visit www.bclc.com/ responsiblegambling/ or go to our Facebook page: Responsible Gambling Week Kamloops.
