Stories from the back and front of a taxi It’s incredible how much information a person can pack into fifteen minutes while driving. It’s true that when you call a taxi, you never really know who you’re going to find behind the wheel. Some cabbies are super friendly, while others want nothing to do with you. Sometimes, mostly when you just want to get somewhere fast, the driver will insist on telling you about their more interesting life other than just driving a taxi. Many taxi drivers are smalltalkers needing something to make the time go by. Ready for his 12-hour shift to begin, Marc Ross is giving his taxi cab the once over. The interior of the taxi is clean. It won’t be by the end of the night but at least it is starting out that way. Marc’s afternoon was spent running errands, cleaning up his house, hitting the gym and studying for an exam so he can earn his degree. It’s a fact, most taxi drivers have a background with post secondary background. Money is one of the main reasons Marc got into driving taxis. The job offered a solution when flexibility was needed in his work schedule. It’s often a job for students with loans, single parents and those with second jobs. It is also a fact that driving a taxi is one of the more stressful vocations out there. These lords of the

Activism and community action plan support Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo delivered the following statement today in the House of Commons: “Mr. Speaker, as Canada and the

world marks 16 days of activism against gender violence, a critical concern is human trafficking, a heinous form of modern-day slavery that preys on the most vulnerable, especially women and

girls. Canadians are not immune to this terrible crime. The forms of abuse and risk associated with trafficking include physical, sexual and psychological abuse, economic exploitation and abusive

Handy numbers for street disturbances Efforts to curtail vagrancy and loitering on the streets requires the help of everyone. If you experience aggressive or disruptive individuals please take a moment to call the appropriate authorities. All street disturbances are not an ‘emergency but even ‘low priority’ issues need to be reported as it is important to have accurate statistics of calls for service when looking for solutions.

Here are some handy numbers: 911 - RCMP Emergency: Violence, non-responsive individuals, fire, etc. 250-828-3000 Non-Emergency: Shoplifters, drunk in public, disruptive individuals, safety concerns 250-828-3409 City Bylaws: Panhandling, parking, dogs, excessive property garbage 250-851-5949 Ken Salter: Street Outreach Issues

working or living conditions. Our government recently launched a national action plan to combat human trafficking with 18 federal departments working together to combat human trafficking, identify victims and protect our most vulnerable. Our government has also announced a call for proposals through Status of Women Canada to support community action plans that will reduce trafficking of women and girls. Once again, we are taking real action to improve safety for women and girls across Canada.”

Generosity lives here

What’s the best part about being Santa?

6:00am was an early start but the whole crew at CBC and TCC were ready for the 26th Annual CBC Open House and Food Bank Day, the first ever in Kamloops! Shelley Joyce and Doug Herbert broadcasted live, there was entertainment all morning all morning and the generous citizens of Kamloops were rallying behind their community.

The enthusiasm of the circle of love isn’t expressed the same throughout the year like it is at Christmas. That’s the joy, and to be a part of it is beautiful. That’s what Christmas means for this Santa Claus!

Making people happy and putting a smile on their face. When I sit in Santa’s seat, I’m ready for all the childrens’ and adults’ questions.

Resource development survey results Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo released the results from her Responsible Resource Development Survey. “I was very pleased with the volume of feedback I received. Although surveys like this one are not carried out with the same rigorous standard of data collection that a professional polling agency would employ, it nevertheless provides an informative snapshot of

how some of my constituents stand on this issue,” said McLeod. The responses are categorized into four areas: support for the government’s strategy, support with questions or concerns, those opposed to the strategy, and unsure. As of December 7, 2012, my office has received 974 responses from across the riding. These included 606 communications in support (62%), 48 in support with questions or concerns

(5%), 260 opposed (27%), and 60 (6%) unsure. “I find these numbers encouraging, as it suggests many of my constituents support the government’s action to balance the need for economic development with environmental, health and safety concerns,” stated McLeod. “It was a pleasure reading and considering each and every communication I received on this issue regardless of perspective,” concluded McLeod.

Dementia Action Plan gathered force Jim Mann, a British Columbian and Alzheimer Society Board Member who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2007, held a town hall on December 13 at the Cornerstone Building in Kamloops as part of his province-wide push for a comprehensive, funded dementia action plan in B.C. Mann envisions a plan that will help avert a crisis and prepare B.C. for the rising tide of dementia. In the lead up to the B.C. election in May, Mann will visit several of the province’s communities to share his story and urge the many B.C. families who are impacted by dementia to speak with their local MLAs.

Healthy tips for the holidays In anticipation of heavy volumes at emergency departments over the holidays, Interior Health is reminding the public to take a few simple steps to avoid unnecessary trips to the hospital. For non-urgent care during office hours, call your family doctor. Consider going to a local walkin clinic. Call ahead to check the clinic’s hours. Try to see your doctor before the holidays, if you have any developing health concerns. Note the holiday hours of your local pharmacy and ensure your prescriptions are up to date and filled prior to the holidays. Call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 for confidential health information and non-emergency services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For deaf and hearing-impaired assistance (TTY), call 7-1-1. If you are concerned about a possible poisoning or exposure to a toxic substance, call Poison Control at 1-800-567-8911.

If at any time you feel that you require urgent medical attention, do not hesitate to go to the emergency department or call 9-1-1. In our regional hospitals, emergency services are available 24 hours a day; however, some hospitals may experience higher than normal volumes over the holidays.

Jim Mann and Kamloops Support and Education coordinator Tara Hildebrand at the Jim’s Push for a Plan Town Hall in Kamloops on December 13.

We’re too pooped to publish! It’s Christmas holidays at the Echo! Our office will be closed from December 24 to 28. We will be back with Christmas balls a danglin’ on Monday, December 31. Happy Holidays to all!

Compassionate Pinups raises funds for charity The 2013 Kamloops Charity Calendar was created to help support local not-for-profit organizations and promote local living. This unique and charitable calendar has awesome photos, and exclusive coupons for megasavings in town. The theme of the calendar is to Love Your City, and 12 local business are showcased throughout. The style is an eclectic, pin-up Kamloops-esque featuring volunteer models. All profits (up to $10,000) will go towards three deserving local not-for-profit organizations. The charities are the Empty Toy Box fund, The House of Ruth and Kamloops Humane Society. The project came together and is the brainchild of Rebecca Smerdal. “I woke up in the middle of the night and thought something like this would really work. After organizing my idea, I was able to get funding and the support of local businesses. The photographs really catered to our area businesses and really showcases their style and what they are all about. The photos were all shot within their locations. It truly speaks of how eclectic Kamloops is,” Rebecca explained. She urges

people to pick up one of the calendars. The more calendars sold, the more money can be given. This is a collaborative project with twelve amazing local businesses, a bucket load of volunteers and models. The calendars are available at Fudge Yeah, Doctor Love, Full Boar Bike Store, Get Polished, His & Her Photography, Mountain High Pizza, Outrageous Impact Fashion, Qphoria Tanning and

wellness, Rebecca Smerdal Photography, Sakred Skin and Studio, and Sugar and Spice Beauty Bar. We all like to give back to a community that we all love. It’s filled with stunning photos and makes a great gift! Help the community! Love your city! For more information, please call Rebecca Smerdal at 250.318.6487 or email rebeckah@hotmail.ca

Diabetes We are pleased to announce that Dr. Donald Sanford has joined our practice. Dr. Sanford has been practicing optometry since graduating from Pacific University in 1981. New patients and referrals welcome!

Diabetes can affect your eyes. Changes in refraction can be caused by fluctuations in your blood sugar levels. This can lead to multiple changes in your glasses prescription. Many diabetics are first made aware of their condition when they have an optometric eye examination. Later in the disease retinal blood vessels can also be affected causing hemorrhages. Laser therapy can seal off the hemorrhages and reduce damage. All patients that have been diagnosed with diabetes should have an annual eye examination to evaluate the fundus – the back of the eye. And anyone that has fluctuating vision should see an optometrist. See Takahashi Optometry Centre for your annual visual health assessment.

Jessica Baillie (pictured) and her sister, Jen were part of a group that spent two weeks in October helping to build the kitchen wing of the Covaga Innovation Centre in Gashora, Rwanda. The Covaga is a cooperative of women weavers who make beautiful woven goods. When completed, this centre will provide economic, environmental and learning opportunities for the community. Some of their trip highlights included an opportunity to try their hand at weaving and visiting the genocide museum in Kigali.

Developing World Connections (DWC) is teaming up with Aeroplan to participate in the company’s Beyond Miles charitable pooling program from now until January 4. This 30 day holiday campaign asks people to donate their Aeroplan miles so the local non-profit organization can use them for its international and national travel needs. Last year, DWC collected close to 60,000 points. This year, the organization is hoping to get at least 100,000 donated Aeroplan Miles. “If we get to 90 per cent of our goal, Aeroplan will contribute an additional ten per cent to bump us up to 100,000 points,” says Developing World Connections’ communications coordinator, Sarah Johnstone, “but of course, we would love to exceed that goal. The Kamloops community is very generous and we’re hoping for their support again this year.” Donations can be made online through the Aeroplan Beyond Miles website. A link for this website can be found at developingworldconnections.org or donors can drop by Developing World Connections’ office at

The Kamloops Blazers coaching staff announced Dylan Willick as team captain for the 2012-13 season. Dylan will wear the ‘C’ for the first time after wearing an ‘A’ the past two seasons and follows Chase Schaber as the team captain. Willick will be joined by three assistant captains. Colin Smith, Tyler Hansen and Brendan

Ranford will be the assistant captains for the remainder of the 2012-13 season. “Dylan represents what a captain is by his on ice work ethic and off-ice maturity,” commented head coach Guy Charron. “He is surrounded by three strong individuals who have only been Blazers and understand the Blazer way.”

Sports tourism video project The City of Kamloops is reinforcing its reputation as Canada’s Tournament Capital with the launch of its first-ever sports tourism attraction video project. The theme of this 2.5 minute high energy video is why Kamloops is Canada’s Tournament Capital and focuses on powerful imagery of major events, sport and cultural facilities, volunteers and athlete support. The video, produced by local film production company Joy Factory Films, was test-marketed at a BC Lions game at BC Place Stadium in August as well as at the Kamloops Blazers home games since November 16. “The initial feedback from athletes, City staff, Kamloops resi-

dents and BC Lions fans has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Jeff Putnam, Parks, Recreation Facilities and Business Operations Manager. “We really think we touched on why Kamloops is a spectacular sports and cultural hosting community.” The video will be launched on City of Kamloops social media platforms as well as streamed on the City’s website. Future plans include using the video as a selling tool for sports bid proposals, trade shows and community events. The video can be viewed at www.kamloops.ca, on Facebook at www. facebook.com/cityofkamloops and on YouTube at www.youtube. com/cityofkamloops.

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. “In honour of this holy season,” Saint Peter said, “you must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.” The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. It represents a candle, he said. You may pass through the pearly gates Saint Peter said.

The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, “They’re bells.” Saint Peter said you may pass through the pearly gates. The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women’s panties. St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, “And just what do those symbolize?” The man replied, “These are Carols.”
