Reflecting on a fantastic year in Downtown Kamloops Unlike any other area of the city, downtown and the people it plays host to are a special kind of breed. Although 10,000 people travel into our little city centre each day, we seem to all know each other. That being said, more than just throwing out a blanket Happy Holidays to all, we would like to personally wish the best of the season to each and every one of you. This year has been full to the brim of fun, entertainment, activity, growth and even a little controversy here in the downtown core. That controversy of course is probably directly related to growth and definitely makes for some great discussion in and around all of our favourite coffee stops and eateries. Now that Christmas has come and gone and most of us have finally gotten a little time off work to spend with our families and loved ones, it seems like the perfect time to reflect on another year passed and a new one on the horizon. We here at the Echo are lucky that many of you invite us into your businesses, special events and lives and let us share with you all that you do. Although we work hard at the Echo, we believe in a great work-life balance and don’t forget to indulge sometimes min complimentary 15 y facial massage with an

Greetings for the holidays Dear Friends, I wanted to send some sort of holiday greeting to you, but it is difficult in today’s world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. So I met with my lawyer yesterday and on his advice I wish to say the following: Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday practised with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious / secular persuasions and / or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendar of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that Canada is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee. By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her / him or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. The wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher. Best Regards (without prejudice), Name withheld (Privacy Act). Or simply said Best Wishes and Merry Christmas to you and yours for 2012. ~Wenda, Penny, Erin, Carrie, Cristina, Marilee, Wayne, Ian, Will, Arlene and Tanya.

delivering the goods Our downtown delivery gal Marilee Manning (L) started a quest for better health 10 months ago by joining Curves and since then has lost almost 20 pounds and over 23 inches. Marilee is very dedicated and not only gets her workout at Curves and delivering the Echo, but also with swimming as part of her training for the Special Olympics! Goodbye 2011, hello 2012… It has been an exciting year working in downtown Kamloops, and have seen many changes in the downtown core. Although I had worked downtown for five years, it wasn’t until my job as an advertising consultant at the Echo where I was able to really feel like a part of downtown

Kamloops. I’ve met many new people, as clients and friends, and am excited about the future and what the next year has to bring! This was a year of completion and success for my children. I am so proud of their accomplishments. Jessica graduated from the Nursing program, Derek finished his sec-

ond year apprenticeship and Tara continued with her Bachelor of Arts at T.R.U. The Echo and the staff are

always happy to sponsor and participate in the many Downtown events. This year was no different – I’ve judged a Salsa Competition during the Merchant Market, we built a scarecrow for the Scarecrow Contest, took in many delicious appetizers at the Taste of Downtown and braved the cold

weather to visit the merchants during Lights in the Night. (We were even able to get a game of golf in that evening!)As well as many KCBIA and Chamber socials. I’m looking forward 2012, and the new challenges it may bring. Happy Holidays and cheers to all! Penny

Rolling from Chase to California Hello, Echo readers. 2011 has been an exciting year! In addition to the fun events that happen downtown, Taste of Downtown being one of my favourites, I was able to take a vacation and join an exciting new team sport this year. My husband Derek and I visited my brother and his family in Aliso Viejo. It’s about an hour drive south of Los Angeles. Ken and Rachael have two beautiful boys, Paul and Luke, who was only one-month old at the time. We also visited Disneyland and Universal Studios being that it was my first time in California! Last February I went along with freelance writer Tanya Orozco to watch the Tournament City Derby Dolls practice. It happened to be

a fresh meat night (that’s “recruitment” in roller derby language). At first I couldn’t stand in roller skates, but by the end of the night I was skating around the gym somewhat confidently. Ever since that night I have been skating two times a week with the Derby Dolls. I passed my skating skills test in August and played in my first roller derby bout (game) in November! I am hoping that a move to Kamloops will be in the stars for 2012. A shorter commute would be nice! Does anyone want a vacation home in the Shuswap? Happy New Year everyone! Entering a decade of good news We have just wrapped up our ninth year of publishing your favourite little newspapers, the Downtown and North Shore Echo! As we embark upon our tenth year it dawns on me that following our dreams really does make them come to life. What started out as a novel thought, that each and every person has a story to tell and that we all need to hear some good news once in awhile, has transformed into the Downtown and North Shore Echo. Bringing good news to our neighbours is never tiresome and it’s so nice to hear many of our readers say, “I love that little paper! As the holiday season comes to a close it is only natural to spend some time reflecting on the year past and all that has happened in it. There have been good times and bad, tragedy and joy and above all else a community who never quits. The holiday season is a time to take a break and revel in the appreciation of family and those who make a difference in your life and we are proud to call the people who inhabit the Downtown and North Shore neighbourhoods our family. Not only do we have the fortune of interacting with many of you on a daily basis, but we thoroughly enjoy helping you spread the good news that separates Kamloops from so many other communities. As a city, Kamloops must have the biggest heart in the nation, as around every corner there is good news. Fundraisers, charity events, people helping people, there is no shortage of happy news stories

and as a business we have taken it on as our mandate to help promote the good in our community. New Year’s is usually the time for out with the old and in with the new and although our neighbourhoods have seen many changes in the last year it is the old that makes the city so good. It is the dedicated business owners who through good times and bad have made these neighbourhoods their home, it is for the special people who work here, the ones who strive for excellence and are dedicated to improving life in the city. It’s the old-timers and their hard work that have made it possible for all the new guys to come in. From all of us here at The Echo to you and yours, we wish you a very, very happy new year and wish you all peace, prosperity and health for the upcoming year. Wenda Noonan, publisher

A year of new adventures Although I didn’t spend the entire 2011 year here at the Echo, the time that I have spent has been action packed and full of learning. I originally came to Kamloops ten years ago in search of a job as a nail tech, so you can imagine my surprise all these years later doing something totally unrelated. My journey here at the paper started in March

and it has been adventurous ever since. Only four months had passed and I was already filling in as editor. In the nine months here I have learnt so much about downtown and have enjoyed all the different events, activities and festivals. Everything from racing Tanya at the 2nd annual scooter rodeo, eating my way around downtown at the Taste of Downtown

to seeing my very first play with Wenda and Tanya at Mainstage. Outside of work was also adventurous. I spent summer days kayaking and got my nose pierced as well I also went to my very first pow wow, saw Johnny Winter and took my boys to Fright Nights at Playland. I have had such a great year meeting all the awesome people who come

into and pass by the Echo and can’t wait to make many more memories in 2012. Now as soon as it snows enough I am going to go out and use the snow shoes I got

for my birthday. I can’t wait to try them out. Happy Holidays! Carrie Harman is the administrator and editor at the North Shore and Downtown Echo.

KFR couplings used in Firefighters Memorial Editor’s note: Imagine my surprise when I read the media release about the Firefighters Memorial only to see my family name! The Harman Foundry was established in 1962 by my Great Uncle Jack and was the first sculpture foundry in B.C., later to be taken over by his son Stephen after Jack’s passing in 2001. Many works are permanent features around the Vancouver area such as: Bannister and Landy’s Miracle Mile at the PNE, Harry Jerome in Stanley Park, Themis Goddess of Justice and Lord Denning in the Vancouver Law Courts. Needless to say, I am very proud to have such amazing artists in my family! In the spring of 2011, Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) submitted brass hose couplings to the Harman Foundry in Red Deer, Alberta. These hose couplings have been in service at KFR since the early 1960s. Last week, KFR was informed that these couplings will be used in the

casting of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa. This memorial has been in the works for over a decade and is scheduled to officially open in 2012. The bronze elements are scheduled to be completed in March 2012 and delivered to Ottawa in early April. The official dedication of the new memorial and remembrance ceremony will take place in September 2012. This will be the first memorial for firefighters across Canada, allowing them a place in Ottawa to honour those who gave their lives serving their communities. The bronze elements are being manufactured in Red Deer, Alberta at the Harman Foundry. The Harman Foundry has done some significant works in the past such as the Terry Fox Memorials in Ottawa and Vancouver, and the Parliament Hill bronze statue of Queen Elizabeth on horseback.

Trevor’s New Year’s Eve party was an annual occurrence with numerous guests arriving. During the evening, a man knocked on the door, was greeted heartily although no one knew who he was, and was led to where the drinks were, in the kitchen. He sat there happily, chatting away, for a couple of hours before a strange light dawned on his face. “You know,’ he confided to Trevor. “I wasn’t even invited to this party. I just came over to tell you that some of your guests’ cars are blocking my drive.” He continued, “My wife’s been sitting out in the car waiting for me to get them moved, so that we can go out.”

It’s a winter wonderland

Boo!

I just got off the phone with a friend living in North Dakota near the Canadian border. He said that since early this morning the snow has been coming down, it is nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is dropping way

below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare. He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.

GET whAT YOu wANT -

your dream career! Feel trapped? Have the month-end dreads? Fantasizing about your life? Could you find the time to pursue your dream career? Commit now to change the rest of your life.

Leo – The Lion July 23rd – August 22nd Expect major tests and trials. Don’t over sacrifice yourself in personal and financial areas. Go with the flow or it will tend to backfire on you. Most important is that family and friends will create a great support system to help you, and you will move forward stronger than ever and certain of your direction! Virgo – The Virgin August 23rd – Sept 22nd Get ready to step out of your comfort zone! No worries! It’s a year of new beginnings for family, finances, and self-care. You get your spark back! Special family moments create a very memorable year! Libra – The Scales September 23rd – October 22nd Justice finally comes your way, but avoid overconfidence! Keeping an open mind will help you to resolve family relation and financial struggles. You might burn the candle at both ends sometimes leading to an uncontainable fire at year’s end--especially with those who are closer to you. Scorpio – The Scorpion October 23rd – November 22nd Last year’s battles may flow into this one, and you will find resolution by year’s end. Finances and career show hope and growth. A situation may seem hopeless, but things will come together nicely! Expect to move ahead either literally or metaphorically. If you are single, finally there is going to be a good relationship for you! Some battles help you to achieve that desired new beginning. Just remember not to bite the hand that feeds you during the more trying times. Sagittarius – The Centaur November 23rd – December 22nd The financial battle soon ends! You can walk on solid ground where a new direction will show itself. Strong financial gains come; but, keep your impulsive buying in check! A major change in self-respect leads to increased personal authority and greater family trust. Some will want to plead their case to you. Use your authority to give guidance, but don’t be quick to jump on their bandwagon. Literal and metaphorical moves can be expected.
