Volunteer Kamloops celebrating 30 years Get your colouring pencils ready kids, because Volunteer Kamloops is really reaching out into the community this year on their diamond anniversary. The organization, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year is much more than meets the eye, it is the umbrella, which glues non-profits together with people and together changes both their lives. “We want to create awareness during our diamond anniversary,” explains Bobbie Kalsi, a member of the board of directors and past youth volunteer and employee of Volunteer Kamloops. “We want to get kids in here, liven up the place.” What she is talking about is a colouring contest she has been working on with some of the youth in our community. Youth, I might add, that have come in on their own, are volunteering their time and have worked together to design and roll out a very interesting contest aimed at engaging kids and families from all over Kamloops to teach them about volunteerism and to introduce them to the association that can help enrich their lives. It is a colouring contest and it is open to kids all the way up to age eight. All you have to do is download the colouring page from the Volunteer Kamloops website, have your children colour it and then drop it off at Volunteer Kamloops or any of the A&W locations on the North Shore, Valleyview or Sahali. The first 500 kids to enter receive a goody bag filled with treats like A&W small fries and a drink. The grand prize winner will win a Bold Pizza Party for ten, second prize is a $50 gift certificate to Tumbleweeds and runners up will win Ruckers coupons. The real prize however will be the ability to introduce the concept of volunteerism with your children and getting to

New partnership to benefit less fortunate

The Homelessness Action Plan (HAP) has announced a new partnership in our community to support those less fortunate Kamloops residents who live on the edge of poverty. This new project, which is being launched in partnership with Valley First, will connect people with banking services, providing guidance and support individuals and families as they strive toward their savings goals. Any successful community program is only as strong as its partners. That is why HAP is incredibly happy to have joined with Valley First to bring banking services and advice to those who need it most. Valley First has pledged its financial services along with funding to match participants savings 1:1 and bringing their financial goals within reach. Participants will be connected to the program through some of the following community partner agencies and others: Elizabeth Fry Society, Interior Community Services, YM-YWCA, White Buffalo Aboriginal and Metis Health Society, Kamloops Immigrant Services, Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Centre, The Boys and Girls Club and Family Tree.
RCMP Youth Academy receives generous donation The RCMP Youth Academy will have extra opportunities for youth this year thanks to a generous donation from KGHM Ajax. This is the fifth year the program has been delivered in Kamloops, which allows approximately 25 Grade 11 and 12 students to spend a week going through boot camp style training led by RCMP members. The training closely resembles the experience at the RCMP depot in Regina. “This is one of the many wonderful opportunities that School District No 73 has for students to test out future careers,” says Sheryl Lindquist, district principal, Secondary Transitions. The $5,000 donation will allow the School District to offer scholarships to the top cadets, offset costs from 2015 and expand the program in 2016. “The program provides information for young people to make decisions about their career path after they graduate,” says RCMP Constable Rupert Meinke, who has been involved in leading the program for the past five years. While the training is aimed at students interested in a law enforcement career, all students
benefit from the program whether they go on to work in law enforcement or not. The experience is unlike anything students have ever done and builds friendships among troop members as they have fun and learn new things. “It’s common for parents to comment on the discipline their child has developed af-
ter going through this program,” Meinke says. The 2015 RCMP Youth Academy is now full, but the School District encourages students and parents to visit their website if they are interested in learning more for the 2016 program: http://tnt2.sd73.bc.ca/wordpress/rcmp-youth-academy/.
Father’s Day Walk/Run for Prostate Cancer gets sponsor Raymond James Canada and Prostate Cancer Foundation BC have announced that Raymond James will be the new presenting sponsor of The Father’s Day Walk/Run taking place on Sunday, June 21 in Kamloops. Giving back into the communities where they live and work is a key value for the people of Raymond James. Being part of a collective ef-
fort to try to spread awareness and educate men about proper prevention and treatment of prostate cancer was a key driver that motivated Raymond James to get involved. For further information on how you can join The Father’s Day Walk/Run and support prostate cancer, check out www.prostatecancerbc.ca or www.thefathersdayrun.ca.
Mary Spencer, Photographer opening reception The Kamloops Museum and Archives is pleased to invite you to join them for the opening reception of Mary Spencer, Photographer, an exhibit that brings together 60 extraordinary Mary Spencer photographs that challenge the conventions of documentary photography, portrait photography and early photojournalism. The opening reception is on Friday, February 27 from 4:30 to 7:00pm with opening remarks at 5:00pm. RSVP by calling 250-828-3576.
Contest aimed at engaging kids and families to teach them about volunteerism - continued from front unteer Kamloops has a host of programs and opportunities for everyone across all spectrums of life. They provide a LINK program which helps match over 80 agencies find much needed volunteers. They run a Volunteer Mentorship Program, which is designed to meet the needs of volunteers who want very short-term volunteer opportunities in a supported and supervised way. This includes RCMP Restorative Justice Program participants who have agreed
to do community service as part of their restitution and students needing to complete their graduation volunteer requirements. Another really great program they provide is the FOCUS Program, which aims to link or integrate mental health consumers with community organizations in a way that promotes their involvement and enhances community awareness about various mental health issues. Volunteering has a meaningful, positive impact on your community. But did you know that it can
have many benefits for you too? Among others like making you feel good, volunteerism helps you develop new skills, introduces you to like-minded people, looks really great on a resume and introduces you to things and activities you may not have realized you like. Ask anyone who spends time volunteering, its not because they are better than you and I, it’s because they tried it and it gives as much if not more back to them then they give out. On that note, Happy Birthday,
Volunteer Kamloops! Congratulations on turning 30. We hope you have another great 30 years. Stop by and visit your friends at Volunteer Kamloops. They are located right on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Seymour Street and will be happy to see you. Don’t forget to download the colouring page for the contest from their website at volunteerkamloops.org. It is a great way to be able to introduce the wonders of volunteerism to your family. ECHO ASKS Opinions of the people who matter – you.
What is the most/least romantic Valentine’s Day you’ve had?
Kamloops was very honoured to welcome executive director of 8-80 Cities Organization Gil Penalosa (Left) this past week for the CommUnity Innovation Lab. Gil was here to observe our city first-hand and to participate in discussions on how Kamloops can move forward in many areas including business development, green spaces, transit and quality of life. Joining Gil, among many others, in the discussion was Kamloops’ sustainability advocate Cheryl Kabloona.
Fundraiser for music scholarship fund To ensure the continued ability of the Richard Dickens Music Scholarship fund and to provide assistance to worthy applicants, fundraising efforts are being undertaken to supplement the fund’s capital. The scholarship was established from the funds of the late Richard (Dick) Dickens’ will. Dick was a much-loved and respected music educator and passionate advocate for the arts. The fund is awarded to students of School District 73 who are going on to post-secondary studies in music. The will stipulated
that the scholarship award was to be $2,000 per year, for up to four years, subject to the recipient maintaining sufficient grades and continuing to study music. The money Dick’s will provided for the scholarship was entrusted to the BC Interior Community Foundation (formerly the Kamloops Foundation) and a committee was established to write guidelines, solicit applications, review applicants and award the scholarship when merited. Two students have been awarded the scholarship to date. Both are currently
attending university music programs and achieving high academic and performance standing. The first fundraiser effort is a concert featuring the Kamloops Community Band and the Kamloops Big Band on Sunday, February 15 at 7:15pm at the Southwest Community Baptist Church, 700 Hugh Allen Drive. Refreshments will be served. There will be a silent auction in conjunction with the concert. For tickets, contact Shantel at 250-573-0003 or email shantelrenner@hotmail.com.

40th Annual Peace Walk planning Planning for the 40th Annual Walk For Peace in Kamloops is underway and organizer Anita Strong says it will be a celebration of the work done by local peace, social, and environmental advocates. “It is heartening to see so many local groups supporting this year’s walk,” said Anita, chair of the local chapter of the Council of Canadians. “Many are drawn to the event
to oppose the Canadian government which stubbornly continues to wage war, degrade environmental protections, and promote inequality.” Walk 2015 continues the tradition set with the social and political actions taken years ago by Kamloopsians who gathered to demand nuclear disarmament and an end to war. “We are planning this year’s walk
and invite other groups to join us, making the 40th anniversary a special event,” said Anita. Walk 2015 takes place Saturday, May 2 at Stuart Wood Elementary School. The next planning session is set for 10:00am, Saturday, March 7 at the Smorgasbord Deli, 225 - 7th Avenue, Kamloops. Contact Anita for more information at 250-377-0055.

Annual Kamloops Y Strong Kids Challenge Lisa McCreadie is new to town. She arrived from the Coast last June to take on the position of store manager at Save On Foods. While touring the Downtown Y, she found out about the Strong Kids Challenge. “I struggle to stay fit while managing a hectic schedule. What helps me get to the gym is to have a goal and to train as part of a team. That’s why the Y’s Strong Kids Challenge is such a perfect fit for me. Not only am I a part of team that has to set a fitness goal and compete with other teams, but I’m also raising money to make sure that kids in Kamloops get opportunities to participate in healthy activities and life-changing experiences like learning to swim and going to camp. It means a lot to me to make a difference to children who really need it.” Lisa is part of the Challenge’s Women in Business Team, which also includes Vickie Pejril, Donna Thompson (Cooper’s Foods), Diane Peters (Dominion Lending) and Brandy Coull (Pink with Envy). From February 9 to March 9, Strong Kids Challenge participants
will be hard at work trying to shed pounds and build muscle at the Y all while encouraging friends to help kids by making a donation at www. kamloopsy.org/strongkids. This year’s Strong Kids Campaign goal is to help 1,000 kids participate and belong by raising $85,000. 100 per cent of every dollar donated goes directly to help kids. “One in five kids in BC lives under the poverty line, says Monica van der Meulen, general manager of Child, Youth and Family Services at the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA, “and many families are under tremendous
stress trying to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. The Y provides a safe, supportive and healthy environment for these kids and families. For many, we are a second home. The funding from the Strong Kids Campaign allows us to reach out to every kid and family who really needs us in their life.” Follow the progress of the Challenge teams at facebook.com/kamloopsy and on Twitter @kamloopsy. More information on the Y Strong Kids Campaign and the Strong Kids Challenge can be found at www.kamloopsy.org/strongkids.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Make Downtown Kamloops grow with the KCBIA READY, SET It may look like another normal day in Downtown Kamloops but did you know that there are many people working hard behind the scenes to make sure your downtown is a place you want to be; shop, live, work and play? The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association (KCBIA) or Downtown Kamloops as they have become to be known has been in existence since 2002. They are run by general manager Gay Pooler, administrator Tanya Hamelock, 16 Board of Directors and a whole host of community volunteers who come together to give direction to your downtown. They do things like focus on business development, safety and social issues in our neighbourhood and marketing for the downtown core. They just celebrated their Annual General Meeting where one message was constant, they want and need you to participate. “We couldn’t do it without you, our neighbours here in Downtown Kamloops,” explains Gay. “We rely on the input of our business people to plan each year. We want you to get involved and help us shape downtown.” What does that mean exactly? It’s actually quite simple. The KCBIA has committees of action, which meet once per month to bring recommendations and ideas to the Board of Directors. They are looking for retailers, restaurateurs, service providers and business people to come and bring their ideas and knowledge to these committees. It is the perfect opportunity for you to become involved in the community and your downtown, helping to bring forward what you think you

would like to see in our neighbourhood. The two committees in which they would like to see the most uptake in right now is the Safety and Social Committee and the Marketing and Communications Committee. A representative of any business or commercial property in the downtown core is welcome to attend or join and they welcome any involvement. If you are not sure if it is something you would like to commit to, you are welcome to come to a meeting just to check it out. “The Safety and Social Committee is responsible for identifying the safety issues downtown,” continues Gay. “They work on developing programs like our Customer Care and Patrol team
and help work on ideas for managing other ongoing safety and social issues. The Marketing and Communications Committee helps to plan, give ideas and guide our year of events, promotions and overall marketing plan. Both committees are immensely important to the day to day operations of Downtown Kamloops.” The Safety and Social Committee usually meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 2:00pm and the Marketing and Communications Committee usually meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 8:00am. Maladjusted play to benefit Phoenix Centre Theatre for Living in collaboration with the Phoenix Centre and Thompson Rivers University presents ‘Maladjusted’ on March 14 at 7:30pm at the Grand Hall at Thompson Rivers University Campus Activity Centre. Maladjusted is a powerful interactive play, originally produced in 2013, and created and performed by patients and caregivers. The play addresses issues in our mental health system that are creating barriers to human-centered care.

Cast members brought rich and unique real-life experiences as patients and caregivers from within the mental health sector to the original creation and performance of this Forum Theatre production. Maladjusted engages audiences with powerful images and authentic voices weaving together three very personal narratives: A young teenager struggling with sadness over her friend’s suicide is misdiagnosed by her doctor and put on prescription drugs;
a young homeless man who is legitimately taking prescription meds gets thrown into dangerous circumstances by frustrated social workers, who from within a mechanizing system, are trying their best to help him; and finally, there is all of us, unable to adjust to the needs of a maladjusted mental health sector, who become potential agents for change. Spruce up your workspace with original art! Is the only decoration in your office the corkboard or wall clock? Is your boardroom really a bored room where staff and clients feel trapped and uninspired? Or is the only “artwork” in your waiting area the ‘No Smoking’ sign on the wall? Worse yet, do you have dated artwork in your workplace that desperately needs replacing? The Kamloops Arts Council (KAC) has a contest for you. Just upload photos of your lackluster workspace to the KAC’s “Boring Office Contest” page on Facebook by 5:00pm on Monday, February 23 for a chance to win: 1st Prize - three months’ free rental of three pieces of artwork for your workspace (up to $360 value) 2nd Prize - three months’ free rental of two pieces of artwork for your workspace (up to $240 value) 3rd Prize - three months’ free rental of one piece of artwork for your workspace (up to $120 value)
The winning photos will be selected by a panel and contest winners will be invited to the February 27 sneak-preview viewing of artwork on display at the Kamloops Arts Council’s Art Exposed Open Exhibition and have the chance to fill out a wish list of their desired art works prior to the show opening. Now in its 5th year, the Kamloops Arts Council’s Art Exposed is a community-centred visual arts exhibit. Unique to Kamloops, Art Exposed is open; all works by residents of the TNRD in all mediums are accepted in this non-curated exhibition, which runs February 27 to March 8 at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre. This year, Art Exposed will launch an Art Rental Pilot Project - interested parties may apply to rent selected works on display during Art Exposed for a three-month period. A youth gallery will also be featured. For more information, visit www.kamloopsarts.ca.

A bowl of ice cream
There was an elderly couple that in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down so they don’t forget. They went home and the lady told her husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. “You might want to write it down,” she said. The husband said, “No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream.” She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. “Write it down,” she told him, and again he said, “No, no, I can remember: you want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream.” Then the lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. “Write it down,” she told her husband and again he said, “No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top.” So he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon. The wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, “Where’s the toast?”

The spell the prince fell under A prince was put under a spell so that he could speak only one word each year. If he didn’t speak for two years, the following year he could speak two words and so on. One day, he fell in love with a beautiful lady. He refrained from speaking for two whole years so he could call her “my darling.” But then he wanted to

echo stargazer Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) It’s time to start thinking of you again. Money continues to be a concern but that’s no reason to fight this weekend. Recent confusions left a mark but you’ll discover a way to rebound. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You’re looking better than you realize and those eyes really are pointed at you. Thoughts drift inwards and to the past but that’s no reason not to smile back. If they say hello, the rest is up to you. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Luck teams up with the unexpected and a boost in love is on the way. Buy a lottery ticket. When you revisit a creative venture you might decide it’s worth a risk. Luck is strong but energy is low. Yoga instead of weights and don’t push too hard. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) The Moon in Scorpio is relationship time for Taurus and you’ll feel like revisiting some of the promises and missed communications of recent weeks. If you felt like giving up recently, don’t. Get out, be social and maybe invite that special someone out to join the group. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Thoughts are cloudy but work is a big concern. Revisit the ideas before you decide to move on. There’s a big opportunity for a career move. Take it. Rewards follow a challenge accepted. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) It’s time to regain financial focus but you’re also feeling frisky! To top it off a hobby becomes serious with potential financial rewards. Do your research because this can get expensive but have fun. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Financial ventures may have gone sideways recently but you should try again. As thinking clears love returns to say hello. Unusual news arrives from afar. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Is it luck or is it fate or is there something even larger guiding us? All of your prayers aren’t going to be answered in one swoop but a cloud is going to lift and you’ll be one large step closer to where destiny is waiting for you. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You may be thinking about love but attention is required for your health and your business. Start planning your success for the spring with a trip to the gym. You’re going to want to look your best when love comes calling next month. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Close your eyes and go for it. Valentine’s Day or not, you’re lucky in love. This is double for business. Daily shakeups continue but you now have the strength to roll through. Chance is currently helping efforts. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’ll have to undo a bit of the mess from the last couple of weeks but that’s no reason to spend Valentine’s Day alone. Invite a friend over and see where it goes. Love has a feeling of fate and finally draws a smile. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’ll want to get out and network. It’ll be fun to be social and pad the accounts at the same time. Home on the other hand is a different story with sudden matters calling you away from the fun. Love is waiting on an errand.
