game of Scrabble, save a life

There is almost nothing that can cause a ruckus in a family more than a riveting night of board game play. Those who love tabletop games also tend to be highly competitive personalities jumping at a chance to learn a new trick or strategy to leave the others at the table behind. A favourite game in our household is classic Scrabble and the competition is fierce. Winning the game all comes down to a little luck of the tiles, your vocabulary, knowledge of two letter words and placement on the board. Someone who knows the tricks and ins and outs of Scrabble can easily outwit someone with great words with just a few smart plays. For all those Scrabble aficionados out there, you have a chance to test your skills out on the open market this upcoming Wednesday, February 24. The Kiwanis Club of Kamloops is hosting a Scrabble Night right here in the downtown core with all proceeds going to a great cause. “Kiwanis Scrabble Night is held to raise funds for the Kiwanis International Eliminate Project which is making excellent progress at eliminatPhoto credit: UNICEF/BANA2006-00313/GMB Akash ing Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus around the world,” explains Peter Mutrie of the club. “The A health worker giving a tetanus shot to a pregnant woman at an outreach site in Madhupur fee is $25.00 per person to play. Artists wanted for signage design

Thank you!

The City of Kamloops Arts Commission is leading the call for the design of a sign frame for all interpretive signage in parks and along trails, as recommended in the recently adopted Parks Master Plan. Interpretive signage may include historical information and locations of interest to visitors. The design will act as a standardized frame that interpretive information, photographs or artistic images will be installed within. The selected designer will be awarded a $3000 cash award, and the selected submission will become the sole property of the City of Kamloops. All submissions will include, in detail: images of the front, the rear and side profile of the template; dimensions and materials; installation information; and the artist statement relevant to the design and artist bio. The selection process will be made by a jury comprised of mem(L-R) Allie Blades and Hugh Sallis of the BC Interior Community Foundation presented Kamloops Arts Council bers of the City of Kamloops Arts executive director Kathy Sinclair with a grant to help cover costs of venue rental and supplies of the Kamloops Commission, a member of the City Arts Council’s Oh Canada Art Exhibition, to be held at Heritage House from June 28 to July 1. The exhibition will be open to participation from the whole community, from youth Parks and Recreation Commission, to seniors. Bike Repair Stations recovered The two community Bike Repair Stations reported missing at the end of January have been recovered. The RCMP and City Bylaw Enforcement staff found the Bike Repair Stations abandoned at two different locations in the North Shore of Kamloops. “We are thrilled to have them back,” says Glen Cheetham, Sustainability Services Supervisor with the City of Kamloops. “Both of the stations sustained minor damage but they will be repaired and put back into service as quickly as possible, including measures to enhance their security.” The City of Kamloops appreciates everyone’s assistance with spreading the word and raising

awareness about the missing bike repair stations. “All of the attention in the media, including support from Crime Stoppers, likely made these stations worthless to the thieves,” says Glen Cheetham. “Which is great because we have heard through this experience how much the community values these shared tools which benefit us all.” The Bike Repair Stations were installed last summer on bike commuter routes and recreational areas including Riverside Park, McArthur Island and Kenna Cartwright Park to encourage people to use active transportation and to assist cyclists with performing basic repairs while on the move.

The parking stations now feature colour screens, which are larger than the originals and it is now easier to navigate through the registration process. And based on popular demand, a second parking station has been relocated to the TCC lobby. Coming soon, the TCC front desk will be able to electronically process parking-time extension requests for those visitors who will spend more than two hours enjoying the TCC on weekdays between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Note that TCC and Hillside Stadium visitors with a vehicle displaying a valid disabled parking permit can park for free and do not need to register their license plate into a parking station. New parking changes at the TCC In October 2015, the City installed new Parking Stations at the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) using the same system that is used downtown. The City is now rolling out some planned enhancements to improve customer parking experience and parking lot management. Effective February 2, parking registration will only be in effect 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. TCC and Hillside Stadium visitors with vehicles parked in the lot during these days and times must register their license plate at a parking station to receive two hours of free parking or be subject to ticketing and/or towing. Outside of these days and times, TCC and Hillside Stadium visitors are not required to register their license plate in order to park their vehicle in the lot.

Community Band benefit concert fellow director Cliff Noakes, Dick led the band through many years of rehearsals and concerts, including their annual Christmas concert in Chase, as a benefit for the local food bank. Following Dick’s passing, the band continued the tradition of giving concerts in the community, playing in Riverside Park on Canada Day, playing in various retirement homes and has also done an annual benefit concert in Dicks’ memory. Proceeds from that concert, on April 28, go to the Canadian Diabetes Association. The Kamloops Community Band (KCB) is presenting the Richard Dickens Music Scholarship Concert on Thursday, February 25 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the South West Baptist Church, featuring special guests, the School District 73 Honour Band. Proceeds from the annual concert go towards the scholarship, a $2000 annual award given for four years, which is awarded to a graduating student who intends to pursue a post-secondary education in music. Dick Dickens, who passed away in 2009, was a long-time music teacher and school trustee in SD73, and established this scholarship in his will to support those students who were dedicated to seeking a career in music. The Kamloops Community Band was founded by Dick in 2001, to provide a place outside of school for students, teachers, retirees and other community members to continue playing their instruments. Castles and Cottages on Victoria Street has some of the funniest cards you can find! You know they are good when the rack has a ‘caution contents may be offensive to some viewers’ sign. David Schettini had a good laugh as he was trying to find the perfect card.

Classic myth comes to life The TRU Actors Workshop Theatre is Presenting The Love of the Nightingale by Timberlake Wertenbaker and
directed by Wesley Eccleston from
February 25 to 27 and March 3 to 5 at 7:30 pm
at TRU’s Actors Workshop Theatre, Old Main, 900 McGill Road. The Love of the Nightingale is a play about innocence, beauty, lies and tragedy. Based on the classic myth of Philomele, layers of emotion are continu-

ally peeled back until nothing remains but truth, pain, vengeance and transformation. An unshakable bond between two sisters challenges the patriarchy—questions must be asked and there is no escape. With one of the largest cast of characters at TRU, this is a show that you won’t want to miss. Be sure to get your tickets at the Actors Workshop Theatre or Kamloops Live! Box Office at: www.kamloopslive.ca.

BUDGET Give us your ideas Over the years, the City of Kamloops has made budget meetings more personal with a chance to have your say. This format continues to work well and we invite you to be a part of the proposed 2016 supplemental budget discussions coming up. As part of this ongoing conversation we‘ve learned that you want to be involved earlier in the budget process. We hear you, we think that’s a great idea. Feedback on the 2016 supplemental budget and sharing ideas for the 2017 budget helps ensure that staff has time to research items before they go to council for consideration. That makes good sense and we invite you to provide some input on our budget process.

echo stargazer Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Love moves from behind the scenes and steps into the open. Hidden affairs come to light as you and your new love interest head into the world for a joint adventure. It’s time to reach your goals. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Someone has a crush on you but they are afraid to let you know. You’re going to be in the spotlight and people want to know what you’ve been up to. Enjoy the attention and let your beautiful self-shine. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) A shift in energy this week has you entering a cycle where fortune is going to arrive from your friends and social network. If you need a hand then ask. Your friends are looking out for you. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) This week love shifts to your professional work and your public image. Dress to impress and take the lead if called upon. The bosses and a potential love interest will be watching. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) A smiling face appears on your love radar but it’s coming from a distant source. Travel and spiritual exploration are in the cards. If you can find a way to bridge the gap in distance then love is yours for the taking. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You’re creative and playful this week but you’ll also be thinking of your own needs. You’re a giving sign but sometimes you just have to take care of yourself first. A trip to the spa or a new haircut should help recharge emotional batteries. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Love is currently favouring your closest relationship. If you’re single then keep your eyes open for a smile that could turn out to be a little more. Love is looking for Leo so be ready to uncover a diamond in the rough. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Your physical health is taking centre stage so make sure you watch your diet and get to the gym. Towards the end of the week love shines on your closest relationship. It’s a good time to take your relationship to the next level. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You’re entering a cycle of creativity and playful attraction. If beautiful comes from within then fill yourself with your own love and then let it shine to the world around you. You’ll attract more with an honest smile than a pretty outfit. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Love is favouring the home and family this week and a new light is going to shine on your creative and playful nature. Some people think you’re always an intense downer. Show the world you have a loving and playful side. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Enemies are still lining up at your gate but you have more support than you realize. The days are going to be busy with work, networking and communications. Spread your word and make sure your needs are known. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’re going to be in the mood to snuggle up with your dearest and spend the week in bed but you’re entering a new cycle of attraction that has different ideas. Work is going to call you away for a while, as long hours once again become the norm. A surprise cheque arrives in the mail.
