WE DELIVER!
Kamloops Film Fest bigger and better than ever Ten days of international and Canadian films, red carpets, local wine, meandering conversations and all the popcorn you can handle. Must be time for the annual Kamloops Film Festival (KFF)! In its 21st year, the KFF has more movies than ever and a comprehensive range of genres; between comedy, drama, horror and family-friendly options, there will be a movie or two…or three…or more for everybody. Dušan Magdolen, KFF chair said, “I’m excited for KFF 2017 because we are hitting our stride. The festival is still growing, but as for this year, like every year, we are taking pride in doing everything as well as we can. As the Chair, that’s very exciting.” Beyond the films, the festival is teeming with exciting events and special guests. After the Opening Night film KONELINE: Our Land Beautiful, join the filmmaker for a Q&A at Hotel 540. Afterward, stay for the opening night mixer hosted throughout Blue and the Hotel 540 lobby. Jazz singer Cathi Marshall and her bandmates will be keeping things mellow yet up-tempo. Guests are encouraged to get into the mix with the music or tuck away in a quiet corner to chat about the film. Oddball and the Art Gallery: a family friendly tea party will take place at the Kamloops Art Gallery on Saturday, March 4. Before the Australian family film, Oddball and the Penguins, the KAG and David’s Tea will be hosting a pre-film soiree. This event is open to all ages and all ticket holders of a Saturday film. If you have a soft spot for complimentary servings of wine, beer, coffee—or all of the above, the KFF will be hosting discussions throughout the week. Following the French drama, It’s Only the - continued on page 2 Entertainment for everyone awaits at Kamloops Film Festival 2017. Chris Warner photos

Welcome to the newest bike shop in Kamloops, Cycle Logic. Sean and David opened the doors on Valentine’s Day after several weeks of blood sweat and tears renovating the shop located at 222 Victoria Street. They are fully into the culture and invite people to come and stay awhile. There is a lounge area at the back to hang out, eat lunch and chat. They have a great selection of road bikes, mountain bikes and bikes for winter riding. Of course they have all the gear to go with. Arriving soon will be paddleboards and kayaks for the awesome Kamloops summer.

Over $555,000 invested in Community Infrastructure Two projects in Western Canada will receive a combined investment of over $555,000 through the Government of Canada’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. John Aldag, Member of Parliament for Cloverdale – Langley City, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada, made the announcement recently during a visit to the Tournament Capital Centre. The first project will provide $500,000 to the City of Kamloops to replace the indoor track at the Tournament Capital
Centre. Funding will assist with the removal of the old track material, as well as the installation of a new track, lines, bleachers, lockers, and storage containers. “The track replacement will be a legacy project that will reach beyond the community. This project will help to ensure the Tournament Capital Centre remains the venue of choice for regional, provincial, national and international events,” says City of Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar. The second project will be delivered by the Skeetchestn Indian Band, who will receive funding of over $55,000 to add a playground to their multipurpose community park.
This playground will allow children in the community to have access to a common area outside of their school, where they can enjoy the benefits of recreation and exercise. “The addition of a playground at Skeetchestn Benchlands Multi-purpose Community Park will provide long-term benefits to the children, parents and grand-parents of our community and neighboring communities joining us during sporting and gathering events,” says Skeetchestn Indian Band Chief Dr. Ron Ignace. “The 2300 sq. ft. playground will allow for a safe, secure and accessible space for children to enjoy. It also makes everyone proud when our infra-
structure is improved. We are grateful for Canada’s financial contribution and everyone who supported this initiative.” The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program is part of Canada 150 Celebrates, the Government of Canada’s celebration of our country’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. Budget 2016 provided an additional $150 million over two years to Canada’s Regional Development Agencies to deliver further community funding across the country, starting in 2016-17, with Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) being responsible for administering the program in Western Canada.

My favorite part about writing is the sweet satisfaction of emailing the completed product and getting on with my life until the next assignment comes along five minutes later. Other than that, I absolutely relish the interview process. Perhaps a little pencil-pushing minion would be helpful. I could go full-Oprah on my subject; crack into the infinite pool of emotion and wisdom of my interviewee, while someone else fetches coffee and records every word. “Write that down kid; I’m making history here.” I recently had the opportunity to interview comedian Tom Green about his Snow Jam Comedy and Hip Hop Tour happening in Sun Peaks on February 24. I’ve mentioned this to a few folks in their twenties, and they just stare at me blankly. “He was married to Drew Barrymore?” generally garnered an “ah hah” moment of recognition. “That guy.” Uncertain that an interview would really happen, I did my

Feb. 17, a transit bus driver noticed a man in a power wheelchair appeared to be having difficulty. Suspecting he might be stranded, the driver notified the police. When Cst. Toor arrived on scene, the man in the wheelchair advised him that the motor on his chair had broken. The disabled man had no family to call and no money for a cab. Cst. Toor realizing that the wheelchair wouldn’t fit in his police car asked where the man lived and pushed him in his wheelchair through the snow and slush over six blocks to his residence.“This man just needed a helping hand,” stated Cst. Sukhdeep Toor, “I was glad to help him get home safely.” Photo submitted.
Perfectly Fabulous – continued from page 5 buster pen. She came out, she scribbled her name hastily on a crumpled receipt, mumbling a vague pleasantry, and walked away without looking at me once. It’s a great anecdote, sure, but it stuck in my brain when I thought of saying anything to Zellweger. As for Tom Green, he called from LAX, before boarding a flight to BC. He was smart, funny, and articulate. His comedy style has evolved from controversial to a thought provoking assessment of corporate culture, surveillance society, social media, government and technology. When it comes to interviewing or approaching a famous or infamous person, you have controversial questions or ridiculous remarks in mind. You quickly decide against it when you hear their voice or see their face and acknowledge their humanity. While I wanted to ask about what Drew Barrymore was really like—I did not. Success is all about picking your battles, biting your tongue and getting the story that really matters. CLASSICAL GAS
At 3 am a desk clerk at a hotel gets a call from a drunk guy asking what time the bar opens. “It opens at noon,” answers the clerk. About an hour later he gets a call from the same guy, sounding even drunker. “What time does the bar open?” He asks. “Same time as before... Noon,” Replies the clerk. Another hour passes and he calls again, plastered. “Whatjoo shay the bar opins at?” The clerk then answers, “It opens at noon, but if you can’t wait, I can have room service send something up to you.” “No... I don’t wanna git in... Ah wanna git OUT!!!”
Just like magic! The teacher was discussing different jobs held by the parents of the students. When she called on Little Johnny, she asked, “And what does your father do?” “Oh, he’s a magician,” replied Johnny. “Really? And what’s his best trick?” “His best trick is sawing people in half.” “Wonderful!” exclaimed the teacher. “Tell me, are there any more children in your family?” “Yes ma’am, I have a half brother and two half sisters.”
