STOP IN ON YOUR WAY HOME
One of a kind gallery show As I walked into Mr. Clare’s Grade 5/6 class at RL Clemitson Elementary, the kids were just in the midst of choosing who got to handcraft invitations to Mayor and Council for their upcoming gallery show at Exposure Photography right here in Downtown Kamloops. Excited, most of the kids were eager to show off their art skills and invite such notables in our community to a project they have worked so hard on. Under the direction of Exposure Photography partner, photographer and RLC parent Sara Schreiner, the class has been planning, organizing and producing their own gallery art show complete with original artwork and charities of choice to give the proceeds to. “We are donating the money we raise to JDRF and the school gym equipment fund,” explain the kids. “We have a sister and friend in the school with Type 1 diabetes.” The kids went on to explain diabetes and how it affects her life. They are all very aware of what it is and take turns adding more information from how Type 1 diabetes works to how it affects the students’ daily life and the things that do and can happen. It’s quite incredible to see their level of knowledge and dedication to charity at such a young age. The whole project was ultimately inspiration that came to Exposure’s Sara, whose daughter was keen on starting a business. Seeing the drive and desire in her, she decided that it may be something that all the kids in her class may be interested in doing. After working with Mr. Clare, the duo hatched a plan, which will ultimately come to fruition March 6 from 7:00 to 9:00pm at the one night gallery and show that they all hope you will attend. “We commissioned art from kids in our school ages four to 13,” further explain the kids. “Once we told them where the money was going they

were all excited to contribute. They are painting on their own time and donating the items for free.” Broken up into groups, the kids all had a different component of the project they were responsible for. There is the logistics group who planned the gallery, sales who are responsible for learning about all the pieces and doing sales at the show, finance who was in charge of pricing, the product team who secured and solicited art from their schoolmates, and marketing who has been doing a series of interviews, promoting and getting the word out about the upcoming show.
They have 50 pieces of art from a wide variety of children, which will all be mounted and displayed with care, five from each class. The base price will be $30 for a piece with the finance committee explaining they will increase in value depending on the cost of the materials to mount and hang. The kids, who by the end of the project will have worked over two months, are hoping that everyone will come out to see their show with 100 guests as their projection.
