Musical tribute for a heart of gold For those involved in this emotionally charged fundraiser, it’s an honour and a privilege to help create a legacy from the devastating loss of Rob Medves, who died unexpectedly at the age of 46. As the manager of Cactus Jacks, the “gentle giant” was well-known in the community. Following Rob’s untimely passing two years ago, the loss has continued to deeply impact all those that knew him well—or even for those who met him in passing. Lisa Verity, Special Events Coordinator for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and co-organizer of Heart On His Sleeve: A Tribute Concert in Honour of Rob Medves said, “I knew Rob casually, and later professionally, through various events. He had a really caring way about him, he made me feel like I mattered.” “While planning this event, I’ve learned that everyone has the same story about Rob—different details of course, but his absence is felt by all who knew him, ” continued Lisa. Chuck Ferguson, Cactus Jacks’ General Manager “was lucky to have worked with Rob for many years.” Having also grown up with Rob, Chuck believes that Rob would have approved of the fundraiser. “He was unbelievably kind, with a truly charitable heart…it matches his giving personality.” While there have been gatherings to commemorate his memory, Lisa said there have been conversations about whether they could do “bigger and better.” Ultimately, it was a matter of time— to heal, to come to terms— “It has been an open wound, it Photo courtesy of Heart and Stroke Foundation has been such a loss, that the timing didn’t feel of humor, he was famous for pulling some right to do anything until now,” Lisa said.
