Love Doesn’t Hurt- an Evening of Romance

Love doesn’t hurt... in a nutshell that phrase says all you need to know about abusive relationships. Love doesn’t hit, love doesn’t berate, love doesn’t segregate and it doesn’t take away yourself, at least its not supposed to. Sometimes something pretending to be love does these things but nobody should have to endure it. Lucky for us in Kamloops there are some loving and supportive people and organizations who know this better than anyone and work long and tirelessly to help women and children get out of abusive relationships. The Kamloops YMCA-YWCA Women’s Shelter has a long history in our community, helping hundreds each year. The organization, which is a final lifeline for many, is completely non-profit and thankful to the community for much needed support. A fun way to get involved, be entertained and show your love is happening on Thursday, February 12 with an opportunity for an early Valentine’s Day date for all the romantics in Kamloops. Walter Quinlan, a songwriter and guitarist has organized “Love Doesn’t Hurt – A Night of Music to Fill Your Hearts” as a way to raise much-needed funds for the Kamloops YMCAYWCA Women’s Shelter. “Events like these not only raise money to help our Shelter continue to operate, but also raise awareness so people know that there is help when they need it,” said Michele Walker, general manager of the Women’s Shelter. “My first thought was simply to throw a fundraiser to help the Women’s Shelter,” explains Walter. “What’s been really great is working with Michele. She made me realize that it’s not just the money that counts, the support matters

to the people who work and stay there at the Shelter. It really makes it a special event for me.” Walter has gathered some of his friends from the music community here in Kamloops, arranged a house band which will back up a number of talented local singers who are all donating their time and talents to the night and the cause. Local talented musicians like Jim Cochran and Rob Gretsinger will accompany musical acts such as Rita Harpe, Always Elvis and Boppin’ Bob and Lea to provide a great show. “Everyone has been so great and supportive,” he finishes. “The Grind is turning off the house lights, stringing romantic lights and decorating the tables with candles and roses. It’s going to be a real Valentine’s Day like atmosphere. Michele is leaving cards at the tables so that the people who are sitting can send notes of support and love to the residents at the Shelter. It is bringing up a whole other side to this, showing the people at the Shelter that people care about them. Everything from the start has just had such a great vibe and spirit because everyone is putting their heart into it.” Single or attached, do something meaningful this year in the spirit of Valentine’s Day. There are many ways to show love and this way will not only warm your heart but the hearts of people who need to learn what real love is in the biggest way! Tickets are available at the Grind for a suggested donation of $10 per ticket for the February 12 concert. The Grind is located at Fourth and Lansdowne here in Downtown Kamloops. City Council Charts Next Four Years Kamloops City Council and senior administration met for one and a half days to determine Council’s strategic priorities. The process started with a review of issues and opportunities around economy, infrastructure, livability, environment and governance, which were the goals from the 2012 - 2014 plan. Key topics that emerged in the review were explored in greater detail to determine short-term priorities and longer term direction. The goals from the previous strategic plan were reinforced and will serve as the overarching framework. Council agreed on the following immediate short-

term priorities: Cultural Centre Business Plan, Official Community Plan, Service Capacity Review, Industrial Land Strategy and Downtown Revitalization Bylaw Review. The next steps to finalize the plan will be to bring the full draft plan, which includes additional medium and longerterm priorities, to an open Council meeting for adoption. Gord McIntosh, facilitator for the session, observed, “This planning session showed that Council is off to a great start based on their high level of collaboration in the process.”

Skills training a major focus On Friday, January 30, the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce welcomed David Keane, president of the BC LNG Alliance, to speak to the membership at their January chamber luncheon. “From mining to forestry, from health care to post-secondary education, Kamloops is an integral logistical hub for goods and services with talented and skilled people,” stated Keane. “The present energy market volatility just masks a tremendous LNG opportunity in BC.”

“The projects proposed by our members will constitute the largest investment ever seen in this province,” stated Keane. “More importantly, investments made by our members, and the jobs and spin offs they will create, will have a very positive and beneficial effect throughout BC and Canada” Keane stressed that access to energy isn’t just about watching your favourite TV show. It’s actually the difference between prosperity and poverty.

Clever Kangaroo A kangaroo kept getting out of his enclosure at the zoo. Knowing that he could hop high, the zoo officials put up a ten-foot fence. He was out the next morning, just sauntering around the zoo. A twenty-foot fence was put up. Again he got out. When the fence was forty feet high, a camel in the next enclosure asked the kangaroo, “How high do you think they’ll go?” The kangaroo said, “About a thousand feet, unless somebody locks the gate at night.”

Interior Health a BC top employer For the third year in a row, Interior Health has been named one of BC’s Top Employers, a designation recognizing employers in B.C. that provide exceptional workplaces. “Our congratulations to Interior Health as it takes this award for the third year running,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “This is an employer that has committed itself to developing a healthy, engaged workforce and it shows. Interior Health has a low turn-over rate and a large number of long-term employees.” The competition considers various criteria, such as recruitment and retention, high employment standards, physical workplace, work and social atmosphere, benefits, time off, employee communications, performance management, training and skills development, and community involvement. “As an organization whose business is all about care, we recognize

that every person matters,” said Interior Health Board chair Erwin Malzer. “Interior Health has a culture of achievement, collaboration and innovation, in a region that offers beautiful landscapes and a great lifestyle. It also offers benefits that are among the best in the country.” The organization has placed a strong emphasis on employee engagement at every level. Since 2011, Interior Health has conducted a survey of its employees every two years to gauge their thoughts and feelings about their workplace. This feedback is built into team action plans to further increase employee engagement. For more information about why Interior Health was chosen over hundreds of other organizations, and to view the full list of BC’s Top Employers, visit the Top Employers website at www.canadastop100. com/bc.

echo stargazer Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Love and money fill your mood but keep the party small. A private adventure with someone close is all you need to see a new way. You might not be able to make your moves just yet but things begin to clear. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) You might want to buy a lottery ticket. No, you’re not especially lucky right now but you will have a sudden financial shift. You’re glowing and attracting. Dress to impress and wondering eyes will notice. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You can definitely be a “go it alone” kind of sign but right now there’s a feeling of destiny in your relationships. Ask your partner for their opinion. They hold the second set of eyes you’ve been hoping for. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) The team is calling and you’re more than ready and willing to step out and play. Sure, communication is off, plans will have to be re-laid, and the love affair will have to be reexamined. But that means you’re going to be social, set plans and encounter a surprising love affair. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) There’s a balance out there waiting. Somehow the attention required at home will even out all of the energy that’s calling on the career front. You won’t get everything but you’ll make peace with your day. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Your inner nerd is on overdrive but it’s looking to help you attract money. Look at the big picture and let the details sort themselves. Romance blossoms on a working holiday. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Money is arriving though the team but make sure you don’t get lost in the mix. With the Moon in your sign to begin the week, you’ll be shining and ready for the unexpected. Be careful in business but love is strong. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You set a plan and stuck to it. I’m proud of you. This love cycle, allow some flexibility in the plan and it just might last. An old friend leads to an unexpected windfall. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Buy a lottery ticket. Luck is on your side and it’ll give you something to smile about if delays get you down. Networking and sharing dreams lead to a new financial plan. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Let go of old grudges. This is your time for love and you don’t want to waste the energy. Along with love, recent financial efforts are beginning to pay off. Take note Scorpio. It’s good but only as good as the effort you put in. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) The Moon has you thinking career and making a bigger name for yourself. Energy however is directed towards your home life. Helping a family member surprisingly solves both problems and opens the door for love. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’re going to want to reach for the books to help through a financial question. A little research goes a long way. Messages are mixed but your words are golden. Ask for clarity. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.
