PacificSport Interior BC in partnership with the City of Kamloops will be hosting the RBC Training Ground athlete identification camp on February 12 at the Tournament Capital Centre.

The program helps identify athletes with Olympic potential and allow them to train and compete in sports they may not have considered. Athletes between the ages of 14 and 25 who achieve certain performance benchmarks will be invited to compete in Richmond at the Olympic Oval on March 4. The best of the best may receive financial support towards their training and competition programs for up to three years. The winner of the BC regional final will be awarded a trip to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The Downtown and North Shore Echo will recognize outstanding women who have made significant contributions to their organizations, their professions or the community in an upcoming special section.

Celebrate with the City for Family Day On Family Day, the City of Kamloops will transform the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) at 910 McGill Road into a festival for families with children of all ages. The 5th Annual Family Day Festival will take place on Monday, February 13, from 10 am to 2 pm, and the event is free.

There will also be a free swim at the TCC from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Festival goers will have an opportunity to join a princess tea party, get creative with arts and crafts, have their faces painted, experience live performances, learn about all things science, practice karate, and try new sports. With close to 50 booths and activities, there will be something for everyone.

There will be opportunities to win great prizes. Families can pick up “experience passports” at the door and all completed passports will be entered in a draw to win an Annual Family Pass to the Wildlife Park.

In addition, the City of Kamloops booth will have a draw to win a six month full facility pass to the TCC and there will be a chance to win more prizes including Wildlife Park passes, family memberships to the Kamloops Art Gallery, skate passes, swim passes, and City of Kamloops swag. If that wasn’t enough, in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the 150th person to walk through the door at the TCC will win some great Canada 150 merchandise!

The Kamloops Food Bank will be accepting donations for nonperishable food items at the door.

I realized Valentine’s Day was rapidly approaching when my shopping cart collided with a rack of boxer shorts decorated with dancing hearts and open-armed teddy bears while making the rounds at my neighborhood all-night discount store.

Figuring out what to buy for Valentine’s Day has always been a problem for me.

Deciding what not to buy is easier, as in the case of the festive holiday boxers, but doesn’t solve the initial problem.

Consultations with a variety of websites showed me that there is no shortage of gift ideas out there, but I’m still hardpressed to decide what to get. I’ve narrowed it down to something between a $250,000 NeimanMarcus/Nature Conservancy offer to donate a scenic, ecologically important parcel of land in my significant other’s name to WalMart’s Valentine’s suggestion of a Remington nose and ear hair trimmer, which lists for $19.96.

I’m hoping to avoid joining the ranks of thousands of other guys who find themselves desperately cruising the all-night groceries, truck stops and convenience stores on the wee hours of February 14, looking for a gift that won’t disappoint their sweethearts. (Hint: An off-color card and a jumbo Snicker bar probably won’t make it.) But you can go crazy finding the perfect gift.

Actually, losing your head is nothing new when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Contrary to popular male legend, the holiday was not the brainstorm of the greeting card industry, but a tribute to Valentinus, a bishop of Rome in 269. Valentinus ignored an edict by Emperor Claudius forbidding Roman soldiers from marriage, to prevent them from

leaving the army for family life. Valentinus was discovered presiding over secret marriage ceremonies for soldiers and their women and imprisoned. While in jail, he miraculously restored the sight of a blind girl. According to the legend, just before he was beheaded on February 14, 269, he sent the girl a note signed “From your Valentine.”

The rest, as they say, is history — though I have a little trouble understanding how a tribute to a beheaded martyr has evolved into an observance marked by the exchange of chocolate-covered cherries and heart-festooned underpants.

Even the rounded, triangularshaped design used to depict the heart bears little resemblance to the pump that distributes blood through the Valentine-buying public. Fact is, it much more closely resembles the prostate gland, which middle-aged males like me worry about at least as much as our hearts.

But there’s little chance that we’ll see Valentine greeting cards with copy like this: “Be with me, love Come hold my hand I feel your presence In my prostate gland.”

Carrot accident

One day two carrots were walking down the street. They were the best of friends. Just as they started to step off the curb a car came speeding around the corner and ran one of them over.

The unhurt carrot called an ambulance and helped his friend as best he could. He was taken to emergecy at the hospital, and rushed away.

After many hours of agonized waiting, the doctor came out. He walked over to the distraught carrot and said “I have good news, and I have bad news. The good news is that your friend is going to pull through.”

“The bad news is that he’s going to be a vegetable for the rest of his life”.
