Exploring the business side of the art form Dreary ole January has everyone feeling blah and bloated after the blitz of Christmas and New Year’s. What’s a better pick me up than taking on a new activity or perfecting your craft? Brighten up the winter and take the next step with the Kamloops Arts Council (KAC). KAC supports musicians, performers, filmmakers, writers, artists and every creative soul in between, encouraging them to share their work with their community, city and the world. Kathy Sinclair, executive director of the KAC said, “Our focus is on creating more educational opportunities and offering more services to members. Specifically, in regards to developing our professional profiles, it’s about exploring the business side of the art form.” The KAC is hosting You’ve Got the Talent - Now What? on Tuesday, January 24 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Join in on an interactive evening of insights and information regarding the promotional aspects of artwork. The workshop offers presentational and marketing tips regarding social media and web presence. Biography and artistic statements can be developed, written and reworked. Advice will be shared regarding festival and grant applications. Kathy describes the event as having a speed dating format, “Instead of sitting in a lecture, artists can pick and choose areas of expertise.” Ultimately, Kathy and the KAC want to “keep it lively, offering a hands-on approach for artists to connect with like minded people.” Those interested can purchase a headshot from professional photographer Jacquie Shinkewski. The workshop is free, and the photo session is only $5.00 for members

What role does storytelling play in our community?
Going Polar
Several hundred people braved frigid temperatures both in and out of the water on New Year’s Day’s annual Polar Bear Swim at Riverside Park. Some of the participants included (L-R) Dorothy Jeffrey, John Spalek, Jordyn Jeffrey and Kristin Gentile. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!
The Kamloops Chapter of the Council of Canadians is starting off 2017’s Philosophers’ Café with a topic which is always of interest in so many ways– that of storytelling. The speaker on this topic will be James MacDonald of WCT with his unique take on the topic. As the public may know, the Philosophers’ Café is an opportunity to discuss or to just listen to a spirited discussion of a topic which is outlined by a knowledgeable presenter. The talk is competently moderated by Bob Gamble who keeps people on topic and doesn’t allow anyone to dominate the discussion. James MacDonald, the new artistic director of WCT will be looking this month at the role storytelling plays in our communities and how it is influenced by, and influences those communities. The Café will be held at The Smorgasbord Deli, 225, 7th Ave on January 17 at 7:00 pm—but come early to get your refreshments and a good seat.
8th Annual Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive The 8th annual Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive, sponsored by Kamloops Honda in partnership with Literacy in Kamloops (LinK), takes place until January 28. The goals of this project are to increase book ownership in all homes and encourage a love of reading. Over the past seven years, more than 75,000 children’s books have been donated. Throughout the year, volunteer coordinator Faith Bailey and her husband, Al organize teams of volunteers to sort, clean, and label books. Volunteers distribute the books to Bright Red Bookshelves at 22 school and community locations. More than 500 volunteer hours are committed to this project each year. LinK invites the community to drop off new or gently used children’s books at Kamloops Honda until January 28. Other dropoff locations include the North Kamloops and Kamloops branches of the Thompson‑Nicola Regional District Library System, the Henry
Grube Education Centre, and any Bright Red Bookshelf location. On January 20, the Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 will accept book donations at the “Bring a Children’s Book” event during the Kamloops Blazers Game. Every child attending the ABC Family Literacy Day on January 21 at the Henry Grube Education Centre will receive a new-tothem book from the Heap the Honda program. The Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive is just one of the many literacy initiatives taking
place in Kamloops in January in support of National Family Literacy Day, which is celebrated each year on January 27. When families play and read together, they learn and have fun together. Emergency appeal from New Life Community With an Arctic air flow sweeping through Kamloops, temperatures continue to plummet, and so many of us couldn’t imagine being outside for long, let alone not having the warm clothing and food to sustain us. The New Life Community has put out an emergency appeal to the community to help share warmth! “We know we’ve just come out of our Christmas campaign with so many people donating, but we have a real urgent need on our hands” says Executive Director Stan Dueck. “With the brutally cold temperatures, we see many from our community come to our Outreach Centre and instead of just coming in for a meal, they’re here for hours to stay warm, have a warm beverage and meal, and hopefully find some clothing to help them survive another day. Needless to say, being open 24/7 has dramatically increased our expenses and we’re asking our community to help us, and urgently.” New Life Community has issued an urgent call for donations. Stan notes that financial assistance helps them designate dollars to where they’re needed the most. But the non-profit organization

We’re looking for tins of coffee, coffee whitener and sugar. People can also drop off frozen turkeys, roasts, etc… we use it all to help feed those who come in. After buying his ticket, he stopped at the concession stand to purchase some popcorn. Tough boys
Three little boys were bragging about how tough they were. “I’m so tough,” said the first boy, “that I can wear out a pair of shoes in a week.” “Well,” said the second little boy, “I’m so tough, I can wear out a pair of jeans in a day.” “That’s nothing,” said the third boy. “When my parents take me to see my grandma and grandpa, I can wear them out in a hour!”
