The 18th Operation Red Nose campaign in Kamloops finished strong by providing 1265 safe rides home over 11 nights of service and raising close to $30,000 in donations. Kamloops finished first in the province by providing the most rides out of the 13 host communities! The success of the campaign would have not been possible without the support of the volunteers. Operation Red Nose had 220 volunteers fill close to 600 volunteer positions over the 11 nights of service. These volunteers drove 25,070 kilometers over the 11 nights to get clients and their vehicles home safely. The donations raised from the campaign go to PacificSport Interior BC. All proceeds will go toward developing services and programs for amateur sport in the Kamloops region. Operation Red Nose started in Kamloops in 1997 and PacificSport has given almost $266,000 in athlete travel support, $35,000 in coach travel support and a variety of equipment bought to help support athletes and their training.

downtown

Pam Hall: HouseWork(s), showing at Kamloops Art Gallery from January 17 to March 14, represents a decade (2004-2014) of creative work. This exhibition shares Pam Hall’s reflections, daily gestures, invitations and exchanges with people across the nation and around the world. Pam makes visual art, constructs installations, works with language and is engaged in film, video and, most recently, performance. Prominent throughout this exhibition are four suspended “five-pole houses.”

These structures hover above the floor of the Gallery. They invade, inhabit and physically reconfigure the space. Join the Kamloops Art Gallery on Saturday, January 17 for a public and free artist’s tour starting at 5:30pm and opening reception at 6:30pm. Don’t miss the artist’s performance on Monday, January 19 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Visitors are also invited to contribute their own prayers to a Prayer House in the exhibition, throughout the duration.

CommUnity Innovation Lab to inspire new ideas

downtown echo

Marcia Dick of Waste Naught BC hopes that the Fresh Outlook Foundation’s first-ever CommUnity Innovation Lab (CIL) will inspire Kamloops’ residents to adopt more sustainable practices at home, work, and play. As a wastereduction expert and advocate, Marcia is particularly excited about event organizers’ commitment to zero waste. The first of its kind in Canada, CIL combines best facilitation and public engagement practices with emerging social innovation tools in a step-by-step, vision-to-action process that will help participants from all sectors make Kamloops healthier, happier, and more prosperous. Marcia thinks this unique and innovative event will help establish Kamloops as a sustainability leader, and that cross-sector collaboration will be key to enabling and encouraging waste-related efforts such as small and large-scale composting, widespread recycling, and creative thinking about

our community’s waste outputs. “I think that by working together across all sectors we can create a resilient and self-sustaining community,” said Marcia. “Each sector plays an important role, and this conference facilitates that dialogue so that we can all move together in the same direction with less effort than if we operated in isolation.” As a Kamloops mother of two who founded a waste management consulting company in 2010 called Waste Naught BC, Marcia said “I have been passionate about waste my whole life,” a passion which stemmed from her childhood lifestyle. Growing up in rural Paul Lake, near Kamloops, Marcia said her family “never wasted anything” and they always recycled and composted. After completing a business degree at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), Marcia landed a job with the Thompson-Nicola Re-

gional District as an environmental services technician. Working with the region’s authority for waste management for many years, she learned the ins and outs of waste reduction and waste management. “I would like to see Kamloops as a city without the need for a landfill,” said Marcia, who has seen firsthand the abundant resources that are buried in our landfills every day. “If we start to look at waste as more of a commodity, then we are less inclined to just bury it. The first step is sometimes the hardest, but once we start to realize that doing the right things like buying quality products [that are built to last], setting up recycling systems, composting, and repurposing materials - not only feels good, but there are economic benefits as well.” Marcia now performs waste audits for businesses and institutions. “Most people don’t like garbage,” said Marcia. “People also don’t like things to be

messy, and so we have garbage cans everywhere, which are inefficient and wasteful. Waste audits help decision-makers understand how waste is generated and handled in their organizations, and also how to set up a system that is more efficient and ecofriendly.” Marcia is looking forward to the event in February and she hopes that the CIL will raise awareness and get more people thinking about their future in sustainability. “A lot of innovative ideas are being brought to the table,” Marcia said, “and I hope that these topics will help educate and inspire our community to create a future of forever.” The Kamloops CIL 2015 is being hosted at the Campus Activity Centre at TRU from February 3 to 5. Locally owned and operated and located on the corner of 5th and St. Paul, Manshadi Pharmacy has been a staple in the downtown core and now on the North Shore of Kamloops and for good reason. Under the direction of owner and head pharmacist Missagh Manshadi, the pharmacies pride themselves on not only providing your medications but helping each and every person that walks through their door on a path to better wellness. “Our name is right on our pharmacy,” explains Missagh. “We do everything possible to uphold the integrity of our name and go the extra mile every single time. It is needed to attract new customers and maintain our existing ones.” Being locally owned and operated is very important. It means that each dollar that comes through the doors, stays right here in Kamloops. This is very self evident and in addition to the 18 staff that is employed at Manshadi Pharmacies, we also witnessed the construction of a major building development in North Kamloops which houses its second location, walk-in clinic and much more. “We are the only independent and locally owned pharmacy on the North Shore,” he explains. “Every penny that we make is invested back into our local community. It took a lot of faith to build that building. We are pleased with the support. As a result with what we have done we

In addition to providing your common pharmaceutical services, Manshadi Pharmacy also has a big compounding lab, specializes in diabetes support and focuses on medical equipment and supplies. It is common for the pharmacists and staff to know each of their customers personally and they work together with you to achieve your health goals. “We run our pharmacies with three things in mind,” continues Missagh. “Empathy, kindness

This is what sets us apart from other pharmacies here in town.” You can visit Manshadi Pharmacy here in the downtown core at 477 St. Paul Street. Bad driver

374-3246

The one thing that drove me absolutely crazy about my boyfriend Bill was the way he drove. He would insist on driving in the dead centre of a two-way intersection, and no matter how much I complained, sulked and threatened, nothing made a dent. The only consolation I found was the thought that at least the cars coming towards us, were staying in their lane. Sure enough, I soon resigned myself to my fate, but I would still cringe all too often while on the road.

Well, the day finally came when I was to meet Bill’s family. We headed to the small hick town that he was from in Pennsylvania, and had a grand ol’ time with his folks. It was when we went out for a drive in the old family pick up that I learned that things could get quite a bit worse. “Don’t worry about my husband’s driving in the centre of the road,” said Bill’s mom with a big friendly smile, as we headed onto a two-way intersection. “That’s what everyone around here does!”

Lecture tour with a difference On New Year’s Eve, Daniel was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left his van in the car park and walked home. As he was wobbling along, he was stopped by a policeman. ‘What are you doing out here at four o’clock in the morning?’ asked the police officer. ‘I’m on my way to a lecture,’ answered Roger. ‘And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year’s Eve?’ enquired the constable sarcastically. ‘My wife,’ slurred Daniel grimly.

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS Here are three simple, yet powerful pieces of advice that will help you on your route to success.

Strategy You are probably very good at what you do. You started your business because you have entrepreneurial flair. But do you have a vision for where you want your business to be in e.g. 3 years? You want to grow your business, but to what level? Imagine you invited your family and friends to go with you on holiday. You all get into your car and set off on your way? But have you all decided where you will be spending your holiday? How long time will you be there? What will you do when you arrive at your destination? That is exactly the reason why you need to create a strategy for your business. You need to know how your business will look in e.g. 3 years. Then everything you do in your business is related to achieving that strategy. By working that way, you will avoid wasting time, money and energy on activities that do not lead you to your goal.

Your numbers The second piece of advice I would like to share with you is about knowing the numbers of your

business. I am not only talking about your revenue and expenses. But every number. Let me give you an example, how much does it cost you to keep your business open? That is without making a single $ of revenue? How much money do you earn on each product or service you provide to your clients? Who is your best client? Whom you make repeat business with?

Your stakeholders Your stakeholders are your customers – your staff – your shareholders. Always be good to all three. Provide a product/ service that meets or slightly exceeds the expectation of your client Treat your staff with the respect you want from them. If they feel appreciated, they will work hard for you and enable your success Your shareholders (you and your family perhaps) deserve to be paid for their contribution. So make sure you get a good Return on Investment from your business while having the time to spend with your family.

My name is Aida Andersen and I am a Business Coach. A business coach is much like a business consultant in that a coach is educated to analyse your business and identify areas of improvements. A business coach is also like a teacher who can help you learn how to run your business using tried and tested tools. Finally, a business coach is – a coach. Someone who asks you the tough questions, supports you in implementing changes, keeps you accountable to your own goals, and motivates you all the way until you achieve the success you desire.

Hair today, gone tomorrow A very popular film was being shown at the local cinema and the place was packed. Suddenly a woman stood up and with a scream rushed out into the foyer to search out the manager. “I’ll never come back here again,” she complained. “I’ve just been interfered with.” A short while later another woman ran out looking distressed, complaining of the

Shining his torch along the rows he eventually discovered a man crawling along under the seats. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he roared. “It’s my toupee,” replied the man. “I’ve lost it. I had my hand on it twice, but it got away.”

Will I Live to see 80? I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing ‘fairly well’ for my age as I just turned 62. A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, “Do you think I’ll live to be 80?” The doctor responded by asking, “Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?” “Oh no,” I replied . . .”I’m not doing drugs, either!” Then he asked, “Do

He asked, “Do you gamble, go on vacations or have a lot of sex?” “No.” I said. He looked at me and said, “Then, why do you care to live that old?”

Reliving the good ole’days The old couple had been married for 50 years. They were sitting at the breakfast table one morning when the wife says, ‘Just think, fifty years ago we were sitting at this same break-

fast table together.’ ‘I know,’ the old man said. ‘We were probably sitting here naked as a jaybird, too.’ ‘Well,’ Granny snickered. ‘Let’s relive some old times.’ Where upon,

echo stargazer Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) There’s a lot to think about these days Sag. Change is in the air and it’s time to clamp down on the spending and freewheeling. Home renovations come up and it could be expensive. Unexpected developments with children pop up. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) As much as the week begins with you wanting to get out and network, there’s work to be done at the home office. Expect something you just blurt out to cause a fuss at home. Words aren’t working so speak with your actions. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) With all you’ve been through recently you might want to stay out of trouble this week. The Saturn energy is going to make it feel as if your friends have left you behind but Venus is bringing you back into the romantic spotlight. Focus on what you really want and allow it to come to you. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Mars brings a welcome surge of energy to help balance the days. You’re still working things out with your past but the fight should now be over. Smile at a stranger and you’ll feel the love returned. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The world is changing around you and as much as you’d like to just bend everything to your will or outperform the competition, this time it’s not going to happen. Something or someone from your past is going to stop by and put a kink in your plans. Say hello and take them out for some fun. Love is waiting somewhere social. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You may seem pushy with your dreams and the people who can help but you finally have your passion back and it feels great! Say hello to a stranger and tell them your story. It’s time to attract some help on that project. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Forgive, forget and move on. If you were caught in Karma’s lurch recently you learned the importance of patience, honesty and grace under pressure. Simple values you’re going to need shortly as you’re tested again. This time, you’ll be better prepared. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) If you’ve been angling for a raise or promotion then cross your fingers. This might be the week your dreams come true. Take in a class and begin a new hobby. Love is waiting in the travel section at the bookstore. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Love is still good but it’s time to look at the joint finances. An inheritance or gift from a family member arrives out of the blue. News from a distance will disrupt your daily routine. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) An unexpected development in joint finances has you screaming at your partner. Calm down. The details have already been taken care of so even if you were taken by surprise, it’s still a great time for love. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Sudden and unexpected developments in your closest relationship could send you for a spin. Keep your wits. You’ve been through a lot with this person and one bump shouldn’t sink the ship. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Your daily routine will change shortly and it’s making you nervous about the seemingly unavoidable developments but stay strong. The change is meant to be and if you can keep your feet moving ahead of the energy then you’re going to succeed.
