Fiddle workshop for the love of fiddle music Truer words could not be spoken. Music above all else has the power to unite. This power is especially demonstrated by the new partnership between the Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music (KISSM) and the Kamloops Old Time Fiddlers. The two groups together invite fiddle players age eight and up to join in a free Fiddle Workshop on Saturday, February 6 at Heritage House in Riverside Park. “We were approved for a New Horizons for Seniors grant from the Government of Canada,” explains Kim Mangan, KISSM executive director. “We developed this initiative with the Kamloops Old Time Fiddlers. It has been great a helping bridge the generation gap and engage all ages together. It has just been amazing; you don’t even know how excited we are. The older population has so much to offer the kids and they need that younger generation to be sustainable. John started playing violin at age seven, motivated by a desire to be different than his older, piano-playing sisters. He has not looked back since. John has studied and played classic violin and more recently, viola, which is now the instrument “closest to my heart.” He studied viola at UBC with David Harding, initially majoring in performance, and has a degree with a double major in composition and musical scholar- continued on page 2
