Fighting MS with fitness at the 2016 GranFondo! No one knows why but Canada has the highest rate of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the world. If you look around and think about it, it starts to make sense. Almost everyone knows at least one person around them who is afflicted with the disease. Some you may not even realize, but its there, all around us. Here in Downtown Kamloops, the MS Society works long and hard to help educate, raise money for research and assist people living with the disease. They want us to know not only does Canada have the highest rates of this disease but also that there are over 100,000 people in Canada afflicted with three more diagnosed everyday. MS is one of the most common neurological diseases affecting young adults in Canada hitting women three times more than men. For those who are not familiar, The 2015 GranFondo. Got your ducks in a row?
With the milder winters we’ve been experiencing it seems there are more waterfowl hanging around town. This raft of geese and ducks intermingle along the banks of the Thompson River last week. At last report they were still playing nicely.

Find Utopia at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre The Kamloops Arts Council would like you to join artists Tangie Genshorek and Cameron MacQuarrie for their opening reception of ‘Utopia’ at the Kamloops Arts Council Main Gallery on February 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Utopia will be in the gallery from February 5 to March 1. Utopia proposes the development of unique spaces where humans might create a new way of urban life. Utopia brings together digital photographs and models in collages that create new plans for neighbourhoods through a hypothetical perspective other than our own. Tangie Genshorek and Cameron MacQuarrie have worked together since 2009 in a combined creative effort they call Scaled Space Studio. The idea of scaled space refers to viewing, drawing and modeling at different scales in analog and digital worlds. Tangie and Cameron create 2D visual representations that combine drawing, digital pho-

Tangie Genshorek is a multimedia artist who has been formally trained in fine art at Thompson Rivers University, the University of Victoria and the Alberta College of Art and Design and showed her work in private settings through the 1990’s. Tangie is now creating artwork after completing an undergraduate degree in urban studies at the University of Calgary in 2004 and a master degree in architecture at the University of Toronto in 2008. Cameron MacQuarrie is a multimedia digital artist and has earned a degree in Visual Communications from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1992 and went on to spend time specializing in web development, iconography and the creation of analog and digital motion graphics. Music and art have always been a large part of Cams life and his artistic vision is informed by a career in graphic design.
For the third year in a row, Interior Savings is continuing its commitment to award up to one million dollars in bursaries annually. That’s one thousand $1000 bursaries in 2016! The goal of the Million Dollar Bursary program is to support young people in realizing their full potential. And with over $500,000 still available for students to access, Interior Savings wants to ensure this funding doesn’t go untapped. The program is a benefit offered to Interior Savings’ members. According to Kathy Conway, Interior Savings’ CEO, “There’s still time for students to become an Interior Savings member to qualify for a $1000 bursary and for all the benefits membership offers, including our top-rated service and easy to use mobile app.” To be eligible for a bursary this year, students have until February 1 to become an Interior Savings member. With that deadline just over a week away, Interior Savings is making one final push to get the word out to local students who may need a little help with their tuition. The bursary program is intended for students between the ages of 17 and 24, who are entering or returning to full-time study towards a degree, diploma or trade certification program at a designated post-secondary institution, with classes starting between September 2016 and August 2017. The deadline for members to submit a bursary application is May 1. In the past two years, all those who applied and met eligibility criteria received a $1000 bursary. That’s great news for students and very bankable odds! Visit milliondollarbursary.com for more information or to submit your bursary application.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Your golden choice in downtown Kamloops The Golden Buddha has become a staple in the downtown core over the last 33 years. From humble beginnings in the open market, which was located where BCLC is now, the little store that could has blossomed into the go-to place for everything metaphysical here in Kamloops including stones, crystals, workshops, books and tarot cards. After 12 years of co-owning the store with her sister, Brenda Johnson will officially become the sole owner on February 1. “We have owned the store since April 1, 2004,” explains Brenda. “I have loved being partners with my sister. She is now ready to move on but I am not, so I will be taking over full ownership of the store at the end of the month.” What does that mean for their customers? Nothing! The store will remain the place they love to visit, shop at and browse. If you ask Brenda, she will tell you that the store revolves around her customers. “We have the best staff in town. I love them, they are great,” she explains. “Our customers are the best, that goes without saying. How many people
can tell you that their customers come in and give them hugs just because? Not many, but I can!” Currently the Golden Buddha is working on a host of classes and workshops for your education and enjoyment. “We are working on energy healing classes like Reiki and Igniting Your Spirit,” continues Brenda. “We are also hosting a ‘Getting to Know Your Crystals’ class in February. We also host healers and readers. Come visit us and find out more.” In addition to all these great things, the Golden Buddha also carries a nice selection of clothing, giftware and local art. They are also the winter home of the famous Red Ladybug Piano. “People come in all the time to play the piano,” finishes Brenda. “Some are good, some are not but everyone has a great time.” Stop by and congratulate Brenda on her new journey as sole owner of the Golden Buddha and see what she has in store for the future. The Golden Buddha is located at 247 Victoria Street. Tanya Orozco, freelance
Local artist to design Mayor’s Award for the arts
downtown
Local artist Dennis Cound has been commissioned to design and create the Mayor’s Award for the Arts that will be given out in three categories at this year’s Mayor’s Gala on January 30. Dennis found inspiration for the Mayor’s Award for the Arts design from the Kamloops landscape. Mount Peter and Mount Paul are in the foreground, carved from African wonderstone. Notched into the mountains is the iconic red bridge made from Indian alabaster. The sun, nestled within the
valley, is carved from the same stone. While the teal coloured Italian soapstone represents the ebb and flow of the meandering North and South Thompson rivers. The carving rests upon a block of black walnut. The Kamloops Art Gallery, Kamloops Symphony, Western Canada Theatre and the City of Kamloops will join together on January 30 to recognize artists and arts supporters at the annual Mayor’s Gala for the Arts. Awards Craft and Design and Emerging will be given in three categories: Artist. Tickets can be purchased Business in Support of the Arts, at Kamloops Live! Box Office.

Interior Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week The partners of Literacy in Kamloops (LinK) and others are currently celebrating and encouraging families to play and learn together through Interior Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week. The community is invited to enjoy the many free, fun events and activities including: Baby and Me at Kamloops Art Gallery on Thursday, January 28 at 11:00 am; Chromesthesia at Barnacle Records on Friday, January 29 at 6:00 pm; and Low-River Camera Obscura Workshop at Riverside Park beach on Saturday, January 30 at 11:00 am. The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of family literacy and also the importance of finding a healthy balance between sedentary screen time and active family time. As presenting sponsor of the Week, Interior Savings’ CEO Kathy Conway says, “As a local credit union, Interior Savings’ success is measured in part by how we’ve helped build Kamloops into a resilient and vibrant community. One way we’ve set out to make a difference, particularly with young families, is by empowering parents to give their kids a great start in life. Unplug and Play Week provides families with information and techniques they can begin using today to make a difference in their children’s lives.” For a full schedule of events, check out www.literacyinkamloops.ca or visit any Interior Savings Branch in Kamloops.

One smart dog
busting out
A butcher is leaning on the counter toward the close of day when a dog with a basket in its jaws comes pushing through the door. “And what’s this then?” he asked. The dog knocks the basket sharply into the butcher’s shins. “You dumb dog.” As he reaches down to smack the dog, he notices a note and a ten-dollar bill in the basket. The scribble on the note asks for three pounds of his best ground beef. The butcher figures this is too easy. He goes to the window and reaches for the dried up stuff that’s been sitting out all day. The dog growls at him. The butcher turns around and, glaring at the pup, gets the best mince from the fridge. Weighing out about 2 1/2 pounds, he drops in on the scale with his thumb. “Hmmmmm, a bit shy. Who’ll know?”
Again, the dog growls menacingly. “Alright, alright,” as he throws on a generous half pound. He wraps it out, drops it in the basket and drops in change from a five. The dog threatens to chew him off at the ankles. Another five goes in the basket. The butcher is quite impressed and decides to follow the pup home. The dog quickly enters a high-rise building, pushes the lift button, enters the lift and then pushes the button for the 12th floor. The dog walks down the corridor and smartly bangs the basket on the door. The door opens and the dog’s owner screams at the dog. “Hey, what are you doing? That’s a really smart dog you’ve got there,” comments the butcher. “He’s a stupid dog, that’s the third time this week he’s forgotten his key.

The elevator
An Amish boy and his father were visiting a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The boy asked, “What is this, Father?” The father, never having seen an elevator, responded, “Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don’t know what it is.” While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a rather heavy, not too attractive, older lady walked up to the mov-
ing walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady walked between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally the walls opened up again and a beautiful, young woman stepped out. The father, said quietly to his son, “Go get your Mother.”
Sounds of animals
A mother was reading a book about animals to her three-year-old daughter. Mother: “What does the cow say?” Child: “Moo!” Mother: “Great! What does the cat say?” Child: “Meow.” Mother: “Oh, you’re so smart! What does the frog say?” And this wide-eyed little three-year-old looked up at her mother and in her deepest voice replied, “Bud.”

Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) A quiet flirtation leads to a secret romantic interlude. Could this be the love you’re looking for? Before you go public with your new romance, take some time to figure out if this is what you really want. You have the time to get it right. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Rewards continue to inspire your partner but if you’re single how’s that going to brighten your day? An extra push in the department of love will bring you closer than a passive smile. Reach out and show love that you deserve the best. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) An office romance begins to bloom as more than just the boss’s notice your hard work. In fact everywhere you go you’ll meet people you know leaving you with a feeling that you’re somehow on display. Needless to say, dress to impress and be your best. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Love is right at your fingertips but it feels a million miles away. You’re in a playful and loving mood that’s rubbing off on everyone you meet. Make the most of this energy and figure out a way to bring love closer to home. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Home is where the heart is so spend some time sprucing up the place to better reflect who you are and where you’re going. Shared finances takes centre stage and joint projects begin to blossom. Team up for your best success. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) If you’re looking for love or money then speak up. You’re lucky in both and your words are being heard. I know you’re more of a nonverbal communicator but sometimes words are necessary to get what your heart really desires. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Money is on the mind as it continues to roll in. Find a way to make it part of your daily routine so that it comes to you instead of chasing after your rewards. Say yes when a close friend asks for a hand. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) It’s time to think about yourself and your own needs for a change. Events have had you going the extra mile for others but you really should be taking care of yourself first. Take a step back if things overheat at home. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) It’s a nostalgic low energy week where recharging your batteries might lead to the adventure you’ve been looking for. Love is waiting at home but luck is favouring a visit from someone from your past. Reach out and seek the advice of an old friend. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Focus on yourself and your own needs. You’ve gone more than halfway for the team but you’re still the star and you have to shine as well. You’re entering a cycle where your words will get you what you want. Love is waiting out and about. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Watch your health as emotional overload can lead to physical problems. On the plus side, money is looking very good. You’re not necessarily in line for a promotion at work but a surprise bonus might land right on your desk. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) It’s been a while since you’ve had this amount of positive attention. Yes, the group is still grouchy but if you watch your words and temper your ego then you’ll be surprised to find people changing their minds to follow your lead. Confidence leads to flirting winks.
