QTC showcases Spring and Summer collection Quentin Tecumseh Collier, or Quinn has his friends call him, is a grade 11 South Kamloops Secondary student who has an eye for fashion. He has been designing and showcasing his collections with runway shows in his own house since he was in grade six and this year he has moved to a bigger venue. The QTC Spring/ Summer 2014 fashion show is set for February 1 at the Culinary Arts Building at Thompson Rivers University. “When I was younger, I wanted to do a fashion show but didn’t really know how to make clothing,” comments Quinn. “I did some fiddling around and soon my parents realized that I was serious and they signed me up for some sewing classes.” His first show was pinned together and made up mostly of his Dad’s old shirts, but it was the start of something great. Since then Quinn has grown as a designer and has been hosting two shows a year in his parents livingroom until this year. “They have gotten too big for my house,” says Quinn. “My living room can’t hold more than 100 people.” Thus came about the TRU venue option for the fashion show. Quinn’s mother introduced him to TRU literature professor Katherine Sutherland who then introduced him to Nic Zdunich of the TRU Pride Collec-

tive. Nic is Quinn’s event planner and got him into the Culinary Arts Building on campus. Quinn’s favourtie part about creating a collection is seeing the finished products: “I love seeing the clothing on the girls, just before they walk out on the runway.” The pinnacle is the perfection Quinn gets to create behind the scenes: this perfection, which he then gets to share with the public. The inspiration for his spring/ summer collection is ‘Girls Who

She becomes a groupie,” adds Quinn. “Her fashion sense becomes more punky, edgy and risky. There are dark colours and leather.” This collection took Quinn only a few months to create: “In October I turned my phone off and declined any invites to hangout.” The last few shows were very

I wanted to do something everyone wouldn’t expect.” Not only will Quinn shock his followers, he learned something as well. “Leather is hard to work with. It doesn’t drape, but I am liking it and what I can do with it; it is going to be very sexy,” comments Quinn. This year is even more special for Quinn as he is in a new venue - continued on page 2

Cold cash for Coldest Night walks

BLIND DATE

New Life Mission is encouraging Kamloops residents to bundle up and raise cold, hard cash for The Coldest Night of the Year. A family-friendly winter fundraising event for Kamloops’ homeless, hungry and hurting, the WALK takes place on the evening of February 22, 2014. Taking part in the Coldest Night of the Year will help participants understand the experience of surviving on the streets during a cold Canadian winter, while raising funds to aid the work of New Life Mission in providing much-needed support to members of our community. Coldest Night walks will be taking place on the same night in an anticipated 65 cities from coast to coast.

Blind Date, Western Canadian Theatre’s rmost recent production, is a funny romantic play which tells the story of a girl who goes on a date with a different man each night in her search for the perfect guy. Christy Bruce as Mimi and the very generous Michael Phillips as the Date. The last performance is Saturday, February 1.

The Arbor Aboriginal Art Collective is putting on a series of Youth Workshops. Chris Bose will be inspiring youth through art on January 30, February 6, 20, 27 and March 6, 20. Arbor Collective supports the creation and dissemination of work from Aboriginal, Inuit and Métis artists from all Indigenous Nations living in the Kamloops area and working in all artistic disciplines. It involves participants in creating artwork that confronts and challenges stereotypes, hidden histories and stolen voices and works to inspire and empower individuals through creativity.

The Patch will be in full swing during the Brier Entertainment is the name of the game when the most talented players in the game hit the ice to compete for the Canadian men’s curling championship. This year, thousands of fans from across the country will gather at the Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops, March 1 to 9, for all the excitement of the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier. Everyone knows curling fans

love to party – when the games are done it’s time for even more fun and that’s where the Patch comes into play. The Patch is home to the nine-day party that will be in full swing throughout the Tim Hortons Brier. It’s situated in the Memorial Arena, just a short walk or complimentary shuttle ride from the Interior Savings Centre. The party in the Patch kicks

Art Exposed showcases a community of talent Art Exposed is a ten-day exhibition open to artists of all levels and ages -- emerging to established, youth to senior. It provides artists with an opportunity to compete with their peers and to gain constructive criticism and visibility. It was previously called the Kamloops Art Council’s Juried Art Show. The show’s opening night is February 14 and the exhibition and sale runs from the 15 to the 23 at the Old Courthouse Cultural Cen-

tre (7 Seymour Street West). This year there are two distinct entry categories: 2D (paintings, photography, drawings, etc.) and 3D (sculptures, clay art, glass art, fibre art, etc.) Jurors for 2014 are multimedia artist and gallery owner Tricia Sellmer, multidisciplinary artist and exhibition co-founder Caroline Dick, and Louis-Marc Simard, a Salmon Arm / Revelstoke painter and sculptor.

“Art Exposed is a great way for the Kamloops art community to reconnect and inspire one another,” says local carver Dennis Cound. “I am always amazed at our local talent and look forward to taking this opportunity to showcase my art as well as appreciate the work of others.” For more information visit kamloopsarts.ca or stop by the Kamloops Arts Council office at the Old Courthouse.

Collective members will be working in KAG studios. A number of drop-in spaces are available for interested youth to participate. Please call 250-377-2400 for more information.

Student designer - continued from front and has an event planner. “The sponsors, lights, music, makeup all have gone up to a different level this year,” Quinn comments. “Also the clothes are better. As time passes you get better at what you do. It is quite different from last year, the quality and ideas. Everything has been turned up a couple notches this season.” The QTC show begins with cocktails at 6:30pm and runway at 7:30pm. The show is sure to be more magical and impressive than ever. As per his signature during a show, his favourite look is saved for last, but with a twist this year. “I usually end the show with a gown, but this year I have a leather cropped top and a red skirt with a beaded front made from a cloth from Turkey my grandmother brought back years ago and velvet on the back which is left over from my couch.” The support Quinn has gotten from the community has been outstanding. “They have been really good. The support has been great,” adds Quinn. “It is very gratifying.” Above all his parents and his models are his biggest support group. If you happen to love any of Quinn’s extraordinary pieces, he does sell them. To keep posted on this young designer please visit his Facebook page: facebook.com/ qtc.ca. Ashley Demedeiros

Marcia Dick, Gisela Ruckert and Eli Pivnick hosted the Transition 2.0 film at the Kamloops Art Gallery. This film is about the new trend called Transition Towns. The group brought forth this video to get the idea out there that Kamloops should implement the Transition movement. This movement encourages communities to become more locally sustainable.

CNG fleet innovation coming to Kamloops The future of Kamloops Transit will be driven by one of British Columbia’s most important resources: natural gas. The City of Kamloops will be home to a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) transit fleet, advancing the quality of public transportation for families and the region. A total of 25 new CNG buses will be in service by the spring of 2015. Compared to diesel, the primary benefit of CNG buses is lower, more stable fuel prices. Additional benefits include significantly quieter engines and simplified emission systems. “I commend Kamloops Mayor and council and BC Transit for demonstrating leadership and seizing the opportunity to adopt CNG as a fuel source,” says Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and Kamloops-South Thompson MLA. “The decision to go CNG helps the sustainability of transit, which is an integral part of a successful community.” Terry Lake, Minister of Health and Kamloops-North Thompson MLA, says: “These buses are quieter and produce lower emissions than the diesel buses they replace, which improves the quality of life for families and communities by reducing air pollution and traffic noise.” “The early replacement of older

diesel buses will help the City of Kamloops reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with our Sustainable Kamloops Plan. This initiative also supports the Kamloops Airshed Management Plan›s first strategy which is to encourage alternative, sustainable methods of transportation and supportive infrastructure,” comments Kamloops mayor Peter Milobar. To help offset the initial costs associated with the purchase of the new

CNG buses, FortisBC will provide funding of up to $875,000. “BC Transit continues to lead the way in making natural gas a recognized transportation fuel source,” says John Walker, president and CEO of FortisBC. “Policy changes made by the provincial government helped make this possible and allow fleet operators like BC Transit to take advantage of cleaner burning, lower priced fuel that is abundant in B.C.”

Running to raise money Jamie McDonald is a British runner who is running solo across Canada to raise money for charity. Funds he raises in B.C. are donated to BC Children’s Hospital. He passed through Kamloops on Saturday January 25 and early Saturday morning some local runners from the Kamloops Ridge Runners met him and “ran him out of town.” He is pushing a chariot with all his gear as he has no support vehicle so the local runners helped him by taking turns pushing his chariot up the hill out of town. Please visit his website to donate or to keep track of where Jamie is: jamiemcdonald.org.

Make a pledge to Boogie the Bridge The Boogie the Bridge date has been set for April 27. This annual event is a great way to help support local families and the Kamloops Foundation. You can enter as an individual or as a team. Many organizations around town have been supported by the Boogie’s donations such as the Big Brother and Sisters of Kamloops, ASK Wellness, KELLI and Kamloops Sexual Assault Center. Deborah Miles, of Deborah A’s Mobile Music Studio, is an independent piano and theory teacher who moved to Kamloops in April of last year. It is her passion to discover what is unique about each of her students. She started teaching within her own family. “Saturday mornings was ‘piano time’ with my daughters when they were young; it was an enjoyable time for us,” comments Deborah. “I was approached by a friend to include her children and that was the beginning.” From simple beginnings began a dedicated and educational experience for Deborah. “My students were learning very quickly all I was teaching. So I began to develop my skill level and increase my knowledge,” adds Deborah. “Then it just grew. My Calgary studio had a student population of 40 and up, with a waiting list.” She was well known as a community piano teacher who taught all ages from four to 74. Her music education and study is ongoing. She received an ARCT Diploma with the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
