Music in the Park gets hijacked Sometimes surprise guests are a great way to liven up a party. On Saturday, July 12, BC Living Arts (BCLA) will be hijacking Music in the Park in epic fashion. BCLA is playing party-thrower and has rounded up an excellent assortment of entertainers who are ready to share their audio goodness with all who will listen. Hijacked is an outdoor, familyfriendly event that will present a triple-header concert from 5:00pm to 9:30pm at the Rotary Band Shell in Riverside Park. Artist director for BCLA, Alan Corbishley explains, “BC Living Arts and Western Canada Theatre are taking over the standard Music in the Park series. We are the hosts for Hijacked this Saturday night and have extended the programming. The event is intended to help support our continued efforts to bring arts and culture into our everyday lives.” In selecting the entertainers, Alan partnered with Music in the Park organizer, Henry Small. “We wanted a wide range of artists with songs that really get the crowd going,” Alan acknowledges. He anticipates a successful event with lots of dancing, great music and positive energy. There will also be party favours at this celebration. No, not those little hats with the string that go around your chin. Delicious eats from various food truck vendors, as well as a beer and wine area, will be offered. A selection of Harper’s Trail wines will please the connoisseurs while all natural and unpasturized craft beer from Cannery Brewing in Penticton, will be served to Beerocrats by the Red Beard Roasters crew. These two things will definitely open up the fun factor doors. Remember to bring along a little spare cash for 50/50 draws and raffle tickets. You could win a fabulous prize. The first artist in the limelight is the eclectic Je-

nie Thai at 5:00pm. The song-writer, singer, and instrumentalist will be delivering her organic mix of blues, folk and jazz harmonics. Vocally, Jenie’s sound is said to be influenced by Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Muddy Waters and Ella Fitzgerald but with a sultry style all her own. At 6:15pm let the sounds of Santa Lucia LFR guide you to the dance area with their bilingual blend of Latin funk rock. The crowd will be grooving to the brass and bass of this wellreceived, six-piece ensemble from Vancouver. They are known for pairing socially powerful lyrics with West Coast funk and Latin influences.

Vancouver’s hippest party band will take the action to the next level at 8:00pm. Headliner, Brickhouse is a popular six-member jazz and blues band with infectious originals that promises a good time for fans young and old. Look no further for a fun way to spend a hot, summer night and connect with the community of River City. “Come down for dinner or a picnic,” suggests Alan. Put your dancing shoes on and get ready to crash Music in the Park all in the name of an entertaining way to support local arts organizations. Jody Tippett

Enhanced access to surgical services is now one step closer to reality, as Interior Health has named Delnor Construction Ltd. as the successful proponent for Construction Management Services for the creation of a new operating room at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH). Royal Inland Hospital currently has eight operating rooms and with this renovation, a ninth elective OR

and a new equipment storage area will be created. The project also calls for new equipment and the addition of four beds in Post-Anesthetic Recovery. Additionally, RIH plans to add eight post-operative surgical beds, one intensive care bed and associated staffing. It is anticipated that construction will begin in the fall. Additional visitor services A new tourist information outlet has opened in downtown Kamloops, a partnership project of Tourism Kamloops, the KCBIA and the BC Wildlife Park. With increasing visitor traffic throughout the city, the additional outlet looks to further compliment current welcome services to visitors enjoying the downtown core. The newly opened seasonal outlet is located at #103 – 340 Victoria Street beside Boston Pizza and is open daily from noon until 8:00pm. Not only do Kamloops Downtown Business Improvement Association has installed a Downtown street piano available for any member of the public to play and enjoy. The piano has been painted with chalkboard paint to invite collective decoration. CAP team leader, Erin Miller’s talent was evident when she took a turn tickling the ivories. The public piano concept originated in Sheffield, England with an aim of inviting the public to engage with their urban environment and spontaneously play music in public spaces. The piano has found a home at the corner of Victoria Street and 3rd Avenue outside of Kipp Mallery Pharmacy.

the Visitor Centre Certified staff welcome visitors and help them add to their “must do in Kamloops” list, but there is also a growing selection of Kamloops souvenirs for purchase including T-shirts, postcards, maps and more. “For us, it was all about the partnership of this exciting pilot project,” says KCBIA General Manager Gay Pooler. “Together, the BC Wildlife Park, KCBIA, and Tourism Kamloops have joined to develop this vibrant location.”

Help shape the library’s future The TNRD Library System is engaging in a strategic planning process, and are at the stage of consulting with the public on what they would like from the library in the future. Western Canada Theatre remembers Peggy Gilmour Western Canada Theatre wishes to offer condolences to the family of Margaret (Peggy) Gilmour, a long-time Board Member, Honorary Life Member, and champion, who died last Sunday. “Let’s face it; she was a gogetter right from the start,” fellow board member Judge Terry Shupe remembers. In 1972, even before WCT was WCT, but rather the Western Canada Youth Company, Peggy raised funds to have the company perform in Merritt, where she lived at the time. The very year she and her husband, Alan, retired and moved to Kamloops, 1982, she joined the board of the WCTC. For the next 32 years, she was a fierce advocate for not only WCT, but for many other organizations in Kamloops. She was on boards and

committees and volunteered for a wide range of groups, from the arts to sports, children’s welfare to elder support, here and abroad. Through her efforts and collaborations, Kamloops is a much richer city. Practical, connected, thoughtful, Peggy’s commitment to all her passions, including her family and friends, was such that each group felt she was engaged with them and them alone. No matter what needed to be undertaken, she was always a willing and passionate volunteer. Shortly after she joined WCT, Peggy was fully absorbed in the conversion of the former cattle auction house into the Pavilion Theatre. Such was her involvement that the theatre was named for her beloved Pavilion Lake. Through

Peggy’s dedication and hard work on the Fund Development and Government Liaison Committees, WCT rapidly grew in size and quality. Her love and knowledge of theatre, originally fostered when she was a high-school student, energized those around her. She has been one of WCT’s most

active, enthusiastic and generous supporters since the earliest days of the company. A memorial service and reception was held on July 8 at St. Paul’s Cathedral. For a fuller overview of Peggy’s eventful life, see her obituary at schoeningfuneralservice.com.

Fight bugs the natural way It is that time of year again when bugs come out and take chunks or blood from us. For many of us, it’s our first instinct to go with sprays from the drugstore or department stores to get rid of the pests. What you may not know is that there are safer, natural options available. At Healthylife Nutrition they strive to be your trusted neighbourhood nutrition source, offering you guidance on your entire natural health product needs. Owner, Margo Fifer, says they offer natural products that can deter the pesky critters from biting or help give you relief if you have been bitten. “We have Green Sisters bug repellant made locally in 108 Mile House. It contains natural essential oils that give off scents that the bugs really dislike. Also we have a tablet called MOZI-Q, which is a homeopathic product safe for children and your pets. It starts working within 30 minutes. We have many customers that have tried both these products and get great results.” Healthylife Nutrition also carries a Canadian made product called Nature’s Aid. It is an all-around skin gel and a must-have for summertime. It takes care of sunburns, cuts and helps reduce the itching and swelling of insect bites.

– Locally owned and operated –

You do the shop... We'll do the drop.

Margo and Elizabeth can recommend natural products for summer lifestyles.

If you are looking for some relief from the bugs, stop by Healthylife Nutrition to see what your natural options are. It is going to be a bad year for bugs; be prepared. Healthylife Nutrition is located at

440 Victoria Street and open Tuesday to Friday 9:30 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 4pm. You can reach them at 250-828-6680. Don’t let bugs ruin your outdoor plans this summer.

All the furry love for half the price Get all the love for half the price during the BC SPCA’s Half Price Love cat adoption event, presented by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, from July 14 to 20. The campaign promotes the joy of pet guardianship by allowing potential pet guardians to adopt cats and rabbits from their local SPCA shelter for half the price of the usual adoption fees. “During this time of year, we always see an influx of animals at all of our branches throughout the province,” says Lorie Chortyk, BC SPCA general manager of community relations. “We want to end the wait for the many animals in our shelters who are looking for loving homes by offering a reduced adoption fee. We’re hoping it will encourage people who have been considering adopting a pet to visit their local SPCA and take home a new, furry friend.” Normal adoption counselling and matching takes place to ensure animals go to good homes, she notes. Currently, there are 1,684 cats and

kittens in BC SPCA care across the province – 766 cats and 918 kittens. The BC SPCA is also caring for 118 rabbits in shelters throughout B.C., with 50 per cent of them coming into care as a result of cruelty investigations. Senior cats often wait longer than kittens before being adopted, while rabbits wait the longest in SPCA

care before adoption – an average of at least 90 days, often longer – before finding their forever home. Help a rabbit or feline find a forever home today. To find out more about the Half Price Love promotion, visit the Kamloops SPCA branch at 1211 8th Street or call 250-376-7722.

A new beginning for animals If you’re looking for companionship and want to rescue an animal, a number of local rescue groups and related services can offer you help. On July 12 between 8:30 and noon the Kamloops Heritage Society will be hosting several animal rescue groups at Gaglardi Park on Seymour Street. They include Marvellous Mutts, Pommy Country, Sit Pretty Pits, Huggable Pits, My Little Pony Rescue, a dog trainer, dog food distributor, a dog masseuse, groomers and the Sagebrush agility Club. Folks are encouraged

to come and ask questions, try out the agility course, get Fido a massage and treats and maybe go home with a new friend or two.

When two sports become one Starting this weekend, you too can be a part of Canada’s newest emerging sport – footgolf. This Friday, Sun Rivers will be kicking off the new sport with local soccer leagues and community dignitaries at an Invitational Tournament. Public play commences on Saturday, July 12 at noon complete with a Soccer Challenge presented by the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) from 2:00 to 4:00pm. “We’re thrilled to be the first in Kamloops and one of the first in Canada to introduce this sport” says Sun Rivers Golf Course general manager, Rob Larocque. “To be able to get people out on the golf course playing a new sport is very exciting for us – it’s an entirely new and challenging game combining two great sports. This Saturday, $5 per footgolf green fee will be donated directly back to the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association with $1 per round donated to the KYSA for the rest of the season. “We feel that it’s extremely important to give back to the community and this is a great way for us to introduce a new sport and give back to the youth soccer community during their 50th Anniversary season.” says Rob. FootGolf is a challenging combination of soccer and golf. The

course features 18 holes laid out on nine holes of the golf course with 21-inch cups placed along the fairway. Since the game corresponds to the rules of golf, the game follows similar rules, etiquette and pace of play as regular golf. 18 holes takes a little over two hours to complete. For more information about footgolf please visit footgolf.ca and sunrivers.com/golf for rates and tee times.

Got Talent winners announced With an aim to foster and promote local talent, Kamloops charitable organization BC Living Arts’ production Kamloops Got Talent provided the venue for amateurs who reside within the Thompson Nicola region to brave stage fright and strut their stuff in front of a live audience. While each contestant brought something special to the stage, the numbers were narrowed from approximately 70 performers down to 39 after auditions were held at Aberdeen Mall. Contestants who advanced forward to the final rounds performed on Tuesday at the Rotary Bandshell as part of the Canada Day celebrations. Judges selected winners based on stage presence, originality, overall performance, talent and audience appeal. Winners of the Mini Talent Competition were nine-year old dancer Maya Shuttleworth, and singer Miranda Maher, age 12. echo stargazer CANCER (June 22-July 22) Stay alert for the meaningful coincidences that cross your path this week. Information is coming your way through any type of source: books, TV, people, chance meetings, dreams, meditation, or carrier pigeon. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) This week is about finding healing on either the physical or emotional levels. You may be the healer. If a friendship or a more significant relationship needs mending, now is the time to do so. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) The rules and the world’s expectations have you tied up like a pretzel right now. The harder you struggle, the tighter those binds seem to become. Sometimes if you relax on the control issues, the solution comes through. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) This is a week in which your physical cycle is off. Don’t press your body beyond what it wants to do, just because it could do more last week. Pay special attention to your temporary boundaries right now and by next week things will return to your personal normal. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 –Nov. 22) You have a strong aspect for romance which may come with a small gift. Meanwhile you could be talking yourself into believing that you are in love, when really you are not. When we are lonely, we can ignore issues with a person, giving excuses for him/her. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You and a partner may be enjoying some healing communication at this time. It is possible you are traveling together. Intimate subjects and the sharing of secrets are part of the picture. Perhaps you are discussing the dreaded topic of money. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) The full moon this week will present you with some startling revelations about your partnership(s). Perhaps you have been tending to everyday matters and not noticing the depth of feelings your partner needs to convey. If that is so, it is time for he/she to pop open sensitive topics. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) This is not your smoothest week. Details may nag your mind and your time like pecking ducks. You and significant others are not having the best of communications right now. You may be in the mood to nit-pick others. Probably you will feel generally better if you work alone. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) You may have been told that you are too sensitive for your own good. Early this week it is especially easy to take stressors onto your back that belong elsewhere. If you feel fatigued, irritable or depressed, you probably have done this. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) This is a powerful time to consider your spiritual purposes. It is all too easy for the Maya, the things of the world, to overwhelm every waking minute, leaving no time for the higher goals. If you notice fatigue, disappointment, or depression at this time, stop. Be still and listen for the voice deep within your soul. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Financial activities are especially noteworthy now. You are tempted to make a purchase that is showy and may be beyond your means. It is an old habit of the bulls to go shopping when you are feeling stress. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Your love and social life is highly favored. This is a fine time to play, be creative, and enjoy your progeny as well. Your heart is open and welcoming to all. If money is an issue, you might do better to leave the credit cards at home.
