Fantastical local theatre
Returning to Prince Charles Park this summer is X Fest put on by the Project X Theatre Productions. X Fest 2014 features two wondrous plays that can be enjoyed by the whole family from July 23 to August 9 at the lovely downtown Prince Charles park. Young audience members will get to enjoy Alice in Wonderland, adapted by Mike Griffin which is based on the novel by Lewis Carroll. You and your family will also love the fantastical world in The Last of the Dragons, which is written by Kristin Walter, adapted from the story by Edith Nesbitt. This play is an adventurous tale of a princess intent on changing the status quo and her destiny. Both productions have a mix of local talents and artists from around the province. Melissa Thomas directs Alice in Wonderland and Heather Cant directs The Last of the Dragons. Melissa has wanted to do Alice in Wonderland for many years. “I’ve been interested in doing Alice in Wonderland for a while,” comments Melissa. “It is a great outside show. All of it takes place outside in the story. I actually have one of the kid actors I had last summer. So we have an 11-year-old girl playing Alice which is really exciting. The audience is going to see all the characters they would expect to see.” The Last of the Dragons will be

a hit with all members in the audience according to Melissa. “There will be a castle, dragon hunting and battle scenes with sword fighting,” says Melissa. “There will be a lot of theatrical magic. I am excited to see how it all comes together. It is a very interesting story about empowerment. Although written in 1925 it has a very modern take on a princess story. It is really exciting to see how relevant this story is after all of this time.” This year there will be different seating provided to the audience. “We will be using bleacher style seating this year,” comments Melissa. “Bring things to make your tushies comfortable, though,” adds Heather. For Melissa and Heather this is a whole new experience this year. They have taken over as producers for Project X Theatre Productions. “We took over on the first of March,” adds Melissa. “It has been a whirl wind. I have worked for the company a number of times and it has been essential to my career building. From graduating from university, directing and now professional work.” “It has been a lot of work to get the festival up and running,” comments Heather. “Rehearsals are starting. Patients have enhanced access to diagnostic imaging
(L-R) Dr. Rob Colistro, Department Head of Diagnostic Imaging; Kim Perris, Professional Practice Lead, Radiography; and x-ray technologist Shannon Minty Hembling.
Royal Inland Hospital just completed a renovation within its Diagnostic Imaging department, which includes a new multipurpose fluoroscopic machine that has been installed and is ready to use. The machine’s purchase and an accompanying room renovation was part of a $1.1 million project, shared between Interior Health and the Thompson Regional Hospital District. Fluoroscopy is important because it allows physicians to obtain real-time moving images of
the internal structures of a patient. It is used in a variety of ways, such as examination of the gastrointestinal tract, visualization of joints, and assistance with biopsies. The new multipurpose fluoroscopic unit will enable RIH’s radiologists and technologists to perform a wider variety of procedures than is currently available. And, because the new machine has the ability to move around the patient instead of the patient moving to accommodate the machine, the provision of care will be more comfortable and more efficient.
1st Avenue construction update There currently is no through access on the 100 block to 1st Ave, the block has been transformed into a cul-de-sac. Missing Kayakers located safely On July at 10:00pm, Kamloops RCMP Bike Patrol were patrolling in Riverside Park when citizens notified them they had located an overturned kayak and personal effects floating in the river. The police investigation revealed three males had been kayaking in the river parallel to downtown. The males were highly intoxicated and
they became separated from each other. One of the males fell out of his kayak. With assistance from Kamloops Fire, RCMP Police Dog Service and RCMP General Duty members, all parties were located safe. Police would like to remind the public during this busy summer that consuming alcohol and boating can be very dangerous.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Lending equipment to HELP improve lives The Canadian Red Cross is well known for its efforts during disasters to help fellow humans in dire times of need. What most people don’t know is that they do a lot to improve the daily lives of Canadians. In Kamloops, the local Canadian Red Cross detachment has been supporting those in need for several decades. One of these programs is the Health Equipment Lending program. They have approximately 5,000 pieces of health equipment on loan to the community each year, to over 3,000 different people. Through the Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP), a national program of the Canadian Red Cross, they’re providing health equipment to individuals dealing with illness or injury. HELP also plays an important role in the diversion of used equipment otherwise destined for landfill. Craig Burns, Client Services manager in BC for Health Equipment Lending takes pride in this program. “We provide short term equipment to those who are recovering from injuries, illness or have been discharged from the hospital,” he explains. “The term of lending is anywhere from three to six months at no charge.” All of this is possible because of the volunteers and generous donations made by people to the Canadian Red Cross. “The support for our programs comes through financial donations,” comments Craig. “We have 30 volunteers running the office here in Kamloops.” The short term loan program alleviates the pressures that come along with injury or illness; assists seniors with mobility issues, allows people to return home from hospital earlier, and supports those in palliative care who wish to spend their final days in the comfort of their own home. “70 per cent of our clients are seniors and many of them are financially vulnerable,” Craig says. “This program gives clients the opportunity to use the equipment they need without having to rent it or purchase it.” People who would like to use the equipment need to have a referral from a health care professional or their physician. After that, all they have to do it head down to the depot at 943 Victoria Street and one of the volunteers will find the equipment they need and give them a tutorial on how to use and care for their item or items. “Everytime an item comes back, it goes through an inspection to see if it needs repair,” Craig adds. “Each item is also cleaned and disinfected before it is lent to another person.” The Kamloops depot is BC Southern Interiors’ largest Canadian Red Cross HELP lender. They have multiples of many items which include: bath boards, bath stools, bath transfer benches, bathtub safety rails, bed cradles, bed handles, canes both standard and quad, commodes

Any of these items can be used to aid those who are recovering from surgery such as hip and knee replacement where the recovery time is generally longer. It is greatly appreciated if people who use the equipment provide a donation once they bring their item back, but it is not required. “We appreciate the support of the Kamloops residents,” adds Craig. “We are always in need of volunteers.” If you would like to volunteer you can contact volunteer coordinator Brenda Sharhon at 250491-8443, brenda.sharon@redcross.ca, or you can apply online at redcross.ca. Sitting down on the job For her summer job, my 18-year-old daughter arranged interviews at several day-care centers. At one meeting, she sat down on one of the kiddie seats, no simple task for most people. The interview went
well, and at the end, the daycare center director asked the standard question, “Can you give me one good reason we should hire you?” “Because I fit in the chairs.” She got the job.
A Liszt of classic musicians Steven Spielberg was busy discussing his new action adventure about famous classical composers. Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were in the room. “Who do you want to play?” Spielberg asked Bruce Willis. “I’ve always been a big fan of Chopin,” said Bruce. “I’ll play him.” “And you, Sylvester?” asked Spielberg. “Mozart’s the one for me!” said Sly. “And what about you?” Spielberg asked Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I’ll be Bach,” said Arnie.
Miniature golf It was at a miniature golf course on a brutally hot day when I saw a father with three kids. “Who’s winning?” I asked cheerfully. “I am,” said one. “No, I am,” said another. “No,” the father said, “their mother is!”
