Mother Goose is on the loose

If you go out to the park today, you’re sure of a big surprise. If you go down to Prince Charles Park, you’d better go in disguise!

On Thursday, June 18th become a part of the largest Mother Goose circle ever at Prince Charles Park from 11:00am to 1:00pm and don’t forget to bring your teddy bear, water bottle and sunscreen.

Organized by the Kamloops Early Language and Literacy Initiative (KELLI), the Child Care Resource and Referral (CCRR) and Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Library, the 9th Annual Teddy Bear Picnic and Parent Child Mother Goose Celebration at Prince Charles Park promises to be the best one yet.

Rain or shine, there will lots of fun activities for your family to enjoy and admission is free however, if you like, you can bring a food item to donate to the Kamloops Food Bank as donations are always appreciated.

The Teddy Bear Picnic is a family favourite that has fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Mother Goose will be bringing many of her favorite Kamloops friends to help celebrate including the Kamloops Arts Council’s Rivertown Players, a Robin Hood presentation from Project X, sing along with Vicki Mckee, enjoy the beat with Drummer Dave, or perhaps get the whole family together for a fun filled Zumba session

Storytime Corner With TNRD Library is always a favourite for teddy bears but if your fuzzy buddy is feeling a little under the weather, the fairest of the fairy tale princesses would love to help him feel his furry best at the Teddy Bear Hospital with Princess Parties. The inflatable fire safety house will be set up for everyone to enjoy, as well as a garden station and lots of fun crafts to create. Stop by for a piece of cake and a story or stay all day and treat your favourite teddy bears to the best picnic ever!

Everyone is invited to join in the festivities and children from preschools and daycares across Kamloops are encouraged to attend this event for their year end celebration as the school year winds up for the summer. Rising water levels a concern for boaters Kamloops RCMP would like to remind those who are using the North and South Thompson Rivers that we are experiencing rising river levels due to spring run off. It is important that anyone on the waterways in motorized or non-motorized watercraft is watching out for increased debris floating in the river and be aware of lower bridge clearances. Be sure to slow down and assess the clearances prior to passing under any structures, as the water levels are changing daily. Human carelessness and failure to keep a proper lookout are the two primary causes of boating accidents.

Ensure that all persons are wearing proper fitting personal floatation devices and that your watercraft has the required safety equipment on board. At this time of the year, when the water is still extremely cold, a life jacket is the best defense for surviving cold water shock and hypothermia.

New enhancements to myKamloops simplify access The city’s free civic issue reporting mobile application, myKamloops, has recently been enhanced with capabilities allowing users to access a number of popular online Kamloops city services.

This new enhancement allows users to access all of the city’s online services through an easy to use mobile application. These online services include access

to property information, maps, webcams, business licenses, property permits and applications, utility accounts and development tracking, fine and payment processing, recreation program registration, and more.

To access the free myKamloops mobile application, search for it by name on your mobile device’s online store.

Gaming grants awarded to great Kamloops programs Six great arts, culture and sports groups in Kamloops are sharing $286,300 from the province’s Community Gaming Grants program.

The recipients are Western Canada Theatre Society with $85,000 for its Pay-What-You-Can matinee and professional live theatre programs; Kamloops Arts Gallery with $84,000 for exhibitions and public programs; Kamloops Aquatic Club with $54,000 for Kamloops Classic Swimming; Association Francophone de Kamloops with $28,000 for its cultural, daycare and Youth Educational and Recreational Activity programs; Kamloops Long Blades Association with $18,000 for speed

and in line skating programs and Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club with $17,300 for competitive and recreational programs.

“Kamloops has very diverse arts and sports scenes and our government is proud to support them,” Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone said. “The programs these groups are putting on benefit the entire community, ensuring that families and neighbours can continue to try new things, stay involved and have fun.”

BC Transit has nine new CNG buses and will have a total of 25 in service in the city.

These busses run on compressed natural gas, which has fewer emissions than diesel.

Chris Cadarette is a driver and had one of the three-day-old busses out during the Farmers Market on Wednesday, June 3.

RIH traffic and pedestrian advisory Changes to vehicle and pedestrian access at Royal Inland Hospital are anticipated to be in effect until the end of August. These are to accommodate construction of the Clinical Services Building (CSB).

There will be no vehicle access to the breezeway and first floor hospital entrance, as this area will become a construction zone. All patient drop-off will be directed to the second floor admitting entrance roundabout, however, regular access to the emergency department and parkade will remain unchanged. Vehicles exiting the parkade will be required to use

a different traffic pattern.

Pedestrian access to the first floor entrance will continue, but the walking route from 3rd Avenue and Columbia Street will be adjusted to accommodate construction activity and there will not be access via the staircase, as it will be removed. Pedestrians will be rerouted to the sidewalk across 3rd Avenue. Obey signage and cross only in designated crosswalk areas.

Interior Health recognizes the inconvenience these changes may cause, and appreciates the public’s patience as these measures are temporary and necessary.

Painted Pony Café serves tradition When the doors opened at the Painted Pony Cafe at 705 Victoria Street in Kamloops, it was the realization of a dream two decades in the making and Carol Camille, along with her motherin-law Evelyn Camille have finally made their dream a reality.

Fortunately these two business savvy women decided to act on their vision and share their dream with all of Kamloops and opened a restaurant that shares the traditional recipes of the Aboriginal people made available to everyone.

The restaurant serves traditional Aboriginal fare including Indian Tacos, Elk Stew, Deer Steak, Buffalo Burgers and Bannock.

Evelyn Camille is the self-proclaimed bannock maker and uses at least 13 kilograms of flour each day. Evelyn confides, “I won’t tell you my recipe. They have to come and taste it, and they’ll keep coming back.”

Evelyn and Carol Camille took many of their recipes from their own mother’s time tested creations, recipes that have been handed down through generations. No matter what the economic climate of the time was, the Camille family always grew their own vegetable garden and produced healthy, nutritious dishes from the land. Generations of delicious meals were the foundation that the Painted Pony Café was built on. By serving up traditional fare, the Camille’s have helped people in Kamloops discover new favourite dishes that First Nations people have enjoyed as home cooking for time immemorial.

British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) announced that Amanda Hobson, who has been serving as interim vice president of finance and corporate services and CFO, has been named to the role permanently. The new vice president of human resources, Jamie Callahan will be joining BCLC later this month.

Kamloops Chamber enjoys policy wins with provincial membership The Kamloops Chamber presented its members’ positions on several issues at the BC Chamber of Commerce annual conference in Prince George this week. All nine of the Kamloops resolutions brought to the floor were adopted by the provincial membership.

“Kamloops delegates lobbied to ensure that the BC membership understood the needs of our members and they voted accordingly,” states Steve Earl, president of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce board. “While our issues came from Kamloops, they affect all businesses in BC, and we are pleased to have received the support of our fellow chambers.”

Brant Hasanen, Kamloops Chamber policy chair, stated, “ Our success is a reflection of our members’ engagement in developing policy for matters that are important to them. This is an example of the

strength of the chamber network in bringing forward business concerns to all levels of government.”

“Kamloops has historically brought solid, well-researched resolutions to the provincial membership,” states John Winter, President and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce. “Their sophistication in the policy resolution process is recognized and respected in our organization.”

Getting to “yes” on resource projects and modernizing the Safe Streets Act were two of the resolutions presented by the Kamloops Chamber.

BC Chamber of Commerce will now join with the Kamloops Chamber to advocate on these issues to both the provincial and federal governments.

City of Kamloops Traffic & Road Reports Columbia Street Widening Project 









Three lanes on Columbia Street are now open to vehicle traffic during the day. Four lanes will be open at night.

The construction window is 7 am - 5 pm, Monday to Saturday. There may be some night work as needed.

The pedestrian crossing on Columbia Street at 5th Avenue has been permanently removed. A full signal will be installed at this location as part of the project.

The south sidewalk on Columbia Street between 3rd and 6th Avenue is currently closed to all pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians are advised to use the north sidewalk and to use the crosswalk at 4th Avenue to access the south side businesses, or the crosswalk at 3rd Avenue to access the hospital.

A web cam will be installed on Columbia Street at 3rd Avenue.
