dog guides at no cost to the growing number of Canadians who need them. You can register at any veterinary office, pet store or clinic in Kamloops. The Purina Dog Walk will be a pet and people friendly event where you can walk with friends, family and co-workers, or even join with another team and walk with new friends you’ve just met. Everyone is welcome to attend, all ages and abilities and even if you don’t get to finish the entire route, you’re participation is appreciated and you qualify for some great incentive prizes as well. There is no registration fee and all the funds raised will go directly to the cause. Guide Dogs serve many different purposes for

individuals with special needs. They can be any type of breed although retrievers are often chosen, however pedigree does not matter. They are selected for temperament, ability to take commands and how well they bond with their handler. With the demand for specialized dog guides growing, due to the many applications and types of special needs they can be trained to assist with, it is no wonder dog guides are becoming the first choice for improving an individuals quality of life and prolonging their ability to remain self sufficient. For instance, there are vision guide dogs that help increase the mobility and self-confidence of people who are blind or visually

impaired by enabling their handlers to travel safely through crowds, traffic and negotiate stairs and obstacles. Hearing ear guide dogs are trained to alert handlers who are deaf or hard of hearing to sounds they cannot detect, improving safety and security for the handler. Seizure response guide dogs help their handlers who are affected by epilepsy and are specially trained to react to seizures by barking for help or activating an alert system. Diabetic alert guide dogs assist people who have type one diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness and are trained to detect drops in their handler’s blood sugar through scent and alert them so they can eat something sweet and are

Pictured here, KCBIA general manager Gay Pooler (centre) presents the cheque to Patrick and Kathy Lindsay of the Valleyview Overlanders Lions Club.

Take a walk with your furry friend - continued from front trained to bark for help or activate an alert system. Autism assistance dog guides help provide safety, companionship and unconditional love for children who have autism spectrum disorder and provide comfort and consistency for both the child and their family. They provide calming relief for children in high anxiety situations and help to reduce the stress commonly experienced in crowds or public areas. The bond between the child and animal helps both the child and their family as they gain increased independence and social interaction. Service guide dogs are trained to work with people who have a

medical or physical disability and assist them with daily functions. Keifer, a three years young standard poodle, is the constant companion and best friend of Sharon Robertson who has been with the Service Dog Guide program for many years. Kiefer came to Sharon’s care over a year ago and assists her in daily functions such as turning on and off light switches, opening doors, retrieving dropped items, carrying items between family members and seeking help if assistance is needed. Kiefer loves to learn new things and is currently learning to bring Sharon’s cane and find the phone if it rings. He also loves to empty the clothes dryer to the amusement of the whole family.

Sharon spent three weeks at the training centre when Kiefer first came to live with her, learning to work together and getting to know each other. “Keifer and I have never been alone, the trainers are only a phone call away and have been so supportive. Any time, day or night I can get information or discuss things regarding Kiefer’s care and they have been so helpful,” Sharon confides. But the best thing about handling a Dog Guide or any special canine companion is the unconditional love and joy they bring to the world in general, and to the amazing individuals they are trained to assist. Sharon insists that bringing Keifer home was an easy deci-

sion. “I feel so safe knowing that if I have a fall or there is a problem I am never alone and always feel supported with Keifer by my side,” she says. Through the Purina Dog Walk for Dog Guides, we can see the amazing friendship, understanding and commitment it takes to properly train and implement a successful working relationship between handler and dog guide and the benefits this union makes. Join Sharon, Kiefer and so many other Kamloops community members for the Purina Dog Walk for Guide Dogs and see for yourself what a great program this is. Farm Business Incubator Workshop Are you interested in farming? Do you need access to land? If so, join the City of Kamloops for an exciting opportunity to discuss land and business planning for new farmers on Wednesday, June 24 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Interior Savings Centre. The City of Kamloops has partnered with Community Futures Thompson Country to offer a one-day workshop to solicit interest in a Farm Business Incubator Program (FBIP) in Kamloops. The completion of the City of Kamloops Agriculture Area Plan (AAP) in 2013 identified preservation, growth and diversification of the local agricultural

sector as fundamental goals. In particular, education and support for new farmers was an identified priority. One of the action items of the AAP aims to help address these issues by providing existing public land for a FBIP. This workshop aims to evaluate demand for a FBIP in Kamloops. The work-

shop will create awareness of what a FBIP would mean to the community and region and identify best practices, governance, struggles, operations and financing as well as ongoing opportunities with FBIPs. To register, call Community Futures Thompson Country at 250-828-8772.

Who do you know? Relay for Life is a community fundraising event, hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society, where Canadians across the country join together in the fight against cancer. In 2014, nearly 400 relays took place across Canada. Participants will walk or run together on Saturday, June 20 at Hillside Stadium in the Tournament Capital Centre passing a baton to their fellow participants and working together toward one common goal of fighting cancer. From 11:00 am until 11:00 pm the annual Relay for Life non-competitive fundraising event will inspire and support families in Kamloops communities affected by cancer. For all too many Canadian families, cancer has become an ugly reality and there is a strong possibility that you know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer at some point, if you are not a survivor yourself. This writer fought her own battle in 2011 and survived. Now I fight cancer for one of my dearest friends from childhood who lives each day to the fullest, knowing her battle, just as my editorial, has a deadline. For now what we have is hope and an opportunity to join with other survivors and families who relay for the same common goal, to raise funds to advance cancer research and support Canadians living with the disease. When you register, you can set a fundraising goal and work with a team or on your own to help make progress against cancer by funding Canada’s top researchers who are working tirelessly toward the next breakthrough. You will also help to ease the burden of cancer by providing vital information services and compassionate sup-

echo stargazer Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) After a bumpy start to your birthday month communication finally clears and it feels good. Push forward in love even if it wasn’t working. Your words will charm and a simple apology or explanation goes a long way towards restoring the romantic balance. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Your past and your open enemies have been attacking and enough is enough. Pause and reflect but also keep your eyes on your future. You’re double lucky in money right now and a surprise cheque might arrive in the mail. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) The joke that didn’t work last week just might bring down the house this time around. Love is following your every move and you won’t even have to smile back! With the planets on your side, it’s up to you to choose your perfect future. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Even though the Moon is encouraging you to get out and be social, there’s a larger part of you that needs a break. Visit the gym and take it easy. Troubles from the past begin to ease. If you’re looking for love, a secret affair is waiting. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You’re shining with the team and the rewards are beginning to pile up. It feels good to be recognized for a job well done. You’ve spent the last couple of months upgrading your skills. It’s now time to put your new lessons into action. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Joint finances still have your attention and you’re not entirely pleased with the way things have been going. Don’t fret and just keep going. Your natural skills and leadership qualities are more valuable than you realize. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Questions surrounding joint finances and money from the family will come into play this week. Relationships are causing drama that you wish would just fade away. Love from someone very different is waiting for a reply. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Another busy week fills your days with errands and spinning your wheels. You know good habits are the key to your success both financially and in love. The Moon has you going the extra mile for someone close and the effort will be noticed. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) A creative project gets a second wind but that doesn’t mean you should spend all of your energy resurrecting something that won’t be to your standard. Love is very strong for Aquarius right now. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) There are many different ways to show that you19-21 care. Sometimes we buy gifts, or use words and this week you’re JUNE going to be there to help out practically. Do your best to be there for someone Country Garden special. Your calming presence will bring peace to a touchy situation. Dear Greenhouse Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Watch your words. It might not have worked in the past but things are different this time. Fortune is visiting your home as you continue to ground yourself for the future. Relationships on the other hand will become tense again. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.
