Art for everyone this Canada Day Art in the Park is the largest arts event in Kamloops and is organized by the Kamloops Arts Council (KAC) as part of the City of Kamloops Canada Day celebrations at Riverside Park. Once a small arts market in McArthur Island Park, today Art in the Park is an important part of Kamloops’ art scene. This event is a shining example of the Tournament Capital of Canada’s vibrant culture that is fostered by the KAC. The full day of arts exhibitions and sales, demos and performances is free to everyone and an estimated 30,000 people attend the event each year. More than 90 artists will have their handcrafted and original works on display, from painting and pottery to fashion and jewelry. Art in the Park also features live music, dance and theatre performances for all ages. This event has been an annual destination for many people over the past 30 years and has become a wonderful showcase and sale of quality art, created by local and regional artists with the colour and creativity that the arts community of Kamloops is known for. Everyone is invited to attend a full day of culture, arts, music and festivities, beginning with a Lions Pancake breakfast from 7:00 am until 10:30 am and ending with a vibrant display of fireworks starting at 10:30 pm. Mayor Peter Milobar will be a guest speaker in addition to the

myriad of entertainment and you can see for yourself that there really is art for everyone at Art in the Park. The KAC will also be hosting a new “Great Getaways” raffle, where you can enter to win one of four getaway packages, including a Vancouver weekend getaway or Sun Peaks package. Then take a spin at the “Wheel of Art” to win even more amazing prizes. All of the proceeds support the KAC’s year-round community arts programs, including the Crossing Bridges Arts Outreach, which delivers supportive arts workshops to children, youth and adults who need them most. New this year is local artwork inspired by the pride and patriotism of Canada at Heritage House located at 100 Lorne Street during the Oh Canada! Art Exhibition from Sunday, June 28 to Wednesday, July 1. The Oh Canada! Exhibition is a visual arts display that celebrates our great country and focuses on the themes of Canada’s history, culture and identity, showcasing art from all nationalities, which reflects the rich fabric of our nation. From humble beginnings and near obscurity, the KAC has promoted Art in the Park to become an event worth sharing with the Kamloops Canada Day celebration at Riverside Park. Make your way on Canada Day to see for yourself what a thriving arts community Kamloops has to offer. For more information visit the KAC website at kamloopsarts.ca, where you will find a schedule of performances, participating artists and wares. Trina Budai

The City of Kamloops’ contractor for processing recyclables, Emterra Environmental, is currently experiencing a labour dispute resulting in a strike, effective June 22. The City is not equipped to store recyclables in a safe and environmentally sound manner, which requires a secure area to avoid wind distribution of paper and other materials onto neighbouring properties or waterways. Group hits fundraising target A coalition of groups connected to the crowd funding appeal regarding the proposed Ajax mine reached its target of $25,000 with nine days remaining in the 30-day campaign. “We are thrilled and so very thankful to all who made, and are continuing to make, donations,” stated coalition representative Dianne Kerr. “The people are speaking with their contributions, giving donations that so far have ranged from $5 to $2,000. Folks are willing to give what they can to defend the health and well being of the citizens of Kamloops. All funds raised will go toward an indepen-
dent review of the mine’s application,” said Dianne. The environmental permit application for the proposed Ajax mine is expected to be submitted in the early fall. “We need experts who
will go through this application to ensure key issues are addressed properly. Any additional funding will allow us to conduct a more in depth review, as we will be able to hire more experts.”

BUSINESS PROFILE
Ode to a legend Recently I received a call at my desk from a kindly older gentleman who wanted to share a story or two with me. Since June is Senior’s month, I wanted to interview someone who contributed to our thriving arts community but instead, I had the great fortune of meeting with one of the most amazing, inspirational and driven contributors of Canadian fine arts. We chatted for the better part of an hour about what he has been doing in his busy life and touched on a few interesting updates on what a few of his protégés and peers are doing in their chosen fields of the arts. His name is Tom Kerr and he has spent his colourful life educating and promoting his dream for the theatre with conviction and determination to put the Kamloops arts community on the map. Tom began as a teacher and took the position of school drama coordinator as a side project with no formal curriculum but eventually brought the performing arts to the classroom, much to the dismay of the school principal at the time who kept asking Tom “Why? Theatre is not a real subject.” To which Tom would reply “Why not?” and continued to promote his vision. Through his efforts initially as an educator, he founded the Western Canada Youth Theatre in 1969 as a young people’s theatre and used grants, such as the Local Initiatives Program to fund productions. Many of the emerging artists he mentored and encouraged have gone on to become some of the finest artists in the country. The Western Canada Theatre Company broadened its mandate and became a fully professional equity company in 1975 under Tom’s direction. Tom is the former head of the Department of Drama at the University of Saskatchewan , the founding artistic director of Western Canada Theatre Company in Kamloops and has also served as artistic director of Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon, Neptune Theatre, Halifax and the

Tom Kerr is responsible for inspiring through his leadership many of the Canadian actors, directors, conductors and visionaries that enjoy great success and recognition for their achievements today. young company of Stratford Shakespearean Festival in Stratford, Ontario. He has no intentions of quitting any time soon. In fact, he still takes acting classes in New York and when a dear friend, whom Tom has known since infancy, wanted diction lessons to help project his voice on stage for his Broadway debut this year in the production of “That Championship Season”, Tom was more than happy to assist. Having just finished shooting the second season of his television series “24” and spending most of his substantial career in films, this gifted artist knew his best teacher was Tom Kerr. The actor was Kiefer Sutherland and he received great reviews and a successful Broadway run that ended May 29. Tom has gained recognition and respect from the arts community as one of the founding fathers of truly Canadian theatre and the strong foundation he laid with WCT is a large contributing factor to a very successful 40 years of operation. As the arts community flourished in Kamloops there became a growing need for theatre space and ultimately led to the construction of
Sagebrush Theatre. Tom is passionate about architecture and still offers consulting on theatre construction, ensuring the important details from providing enough seating and adequate plumbing for capacity crowds, to lighting and acoustics being sufficient to properly showcase an artist and their production. He has trained children, politicians, businessmen and actors in the disciplines of an artist and Tom Kerr is responsible for inspiring through his leadership many of the Canadian actors, directors, conductors and visionaries that enjoy great success and recognition for their achievements today. He has been recognized by WCT’s board of trustees officially as the Founding Artistic Director of Western Canada Theatre, but we recognize Tom Kerr’s achievements every time a Canadian artist is discovered. “Kamloops has become a wonderful little city,” Tom says, and what makes Kamloops wonderful is the influence of visionaries like Tom Kerr whose determination, energy and commitment are the foundation that the Kamloops arts community is built on. The short film unReal, the first feature mountain bike film partially shot in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, will be screened at the Thompson Rivers University Clocktower Theatre in Kamloops on Thursday, June 25 at 7:00 pm. The film was shot in and around the Big Bar area along the Fraser River. “Working with Anthill was exciting because we had to propose locations that were extreme, breath-
taking and unique, and the Big Bar area came quickly to mind — it is BC’s Grand Canyon,” says Victoria Weller, Film Commissioner for the Thompson-Nicola Film Commission. “Not only did we select locations from our library, but we researched with the help of our tourism partners, and mountain biking websites.” For more information about the film, visit TetonGravity. com and AnthillFilms.com.

DOWNTOWN echo
echo stargazer Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Defend your possessions. You’ve worked hard for what you have and even though life is moving on there’s no reason to simply give it all away just because things are changing. If tempted by a stranger’s smile, say hello. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) The last couple of weeks put you on the emotional roller coaster. Your reflective and introspective cycles are now over and it’s time to shine again. Self confidence and personal ego energy return adding a bounce to your step and a smile to your words. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Money, love and personal goals are all coming into focus. On the downside, a problem from the past comes calling. Watch your back but don’t get too distracted from all of the fortune that is blessing your steps. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Teamwork and networking are your themes for this astro-cycle. You’d like to lead and show everyone that you deserve both the trust and respect that accompany positions of leadership. Let your actions motivate the team. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) It’s time to put what you’ve learned into practice. Trust your skills and your new approach to getting things done. You’re still receiving love, money and accolades from groups but it’s the office that is holding your energy. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You’re lucky in business this asto-cycle so keep pushing the career and be public about it. Distance travel is calling with an adventure that you’d love to take but you’re stuck at the office. An older person surprises with declarations of love. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Keep a close eye on the health of those close to you. An older relative may be sicker than you realize. You’re entering a cycle of money, love and power. Have fun but don’t get carried away. Success arrives through a team effort. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Enough about money, it’s time for love! This week begins a cycle where you’re going to get serious about finding a partner to share the wealth. Be aggressive but watch for stepping on toes as strangers pause to interpret your jokes. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Love is on your mind and the smiles keep coming but you have chores and they are going to keep you busy. Throughout all of this, you’ll be asked to help out a friend. The love you’ve been waiting for is watching how you handle the pressure. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) A burst of energy adds new life to a creative project you thought was over. This goes double for love. Winks from last week may have been met with a cold smile but things warm up this time around. Reach out and help a friend in need. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You’ve been a social dynamo lately but it’s now time to take care of the home. You’re very creative this astrocycle so take the time to come up with a working answer before blowing things out of proportion. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) As Mars enters your astro-sector of communication you’ll be busy selling your ideas. If you’ve been working on a new financial project then now’s the time to push for more sales. Love is busy grounding your relationship for a more permanent union.
