Sharing the wonders of nature The natural wonders of our world are truly awe-inspiring.

There is nothing quite like an outstanding view that can take your breath away. That makes you feel more alive and grounded than anything else on this earth. It is important to share this connection to the natural world and its beauty to younger generations. There is becoming a disconnection between children and nature as the world has been more developed and technology has grown leaps and bounds. The days of playing the dirt and exploring past the backyard are slowly diminishing.

The Kamloops Young Naturalists Group is dedicated to reversing this travesty. It is their soul mission to inspire children naturally.

Current coordinator Rich Doucette strongly believes in the purpose of the Kamloops Young Naturalists. “It is a great group to get involved in. To get kids outside and away from the screens,” comments Rich. “We organize monthly events with caregivers or parents to come out with their child, be hands on and learn about nature. You will be learning something interesting and it is something new to do with family.”

Out of the Ashes bursary deadline The Phoenix Centre’s Out of the Ashes Bursary is accepting applications until June 30. The awards are given to Kamloops residents who have changed their lifestyles, going from addictions to sobriety and who are pursuing post-secondary education.

Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 35 for the two

categories of awards; must have a Kamloops home address or have recently moved here to attend an educational program; must have one year of sobriety; must not be facing any outstanding charges or incarceration; and must have three letters of support, with contact information, that attest to the applicant’s sobriety.

Two of the letters must come from professionals who have worked with the applicants are required when applying.

The program is funded only by donations and the value of the bursaries varies, depending on donations.

CAP Team Golf Tournament around the corner It’s golf time again! If you have joined the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s annual tournament at the Dunes to support your favourite ambassadors in red, you know that the KCBIA CAP Team have a reputation for being the most fun tournament in town for a reason.

There is still room for a few more golfers and room for more hole sponsors and dinner guests.

Their tournament is a bit different than others. They play the back nine holes of the Dunes Golf Course Vegas-style.

Vegas style means that each team gets a big die. Everyone drives, you roll the die and who-

ever’s number it lands on, that’s the drive you must take. If it lands on a five or six, you get to take best ball. This makes for a very fun and unpredictable game.

In addition to golf, there are also a myriad of activities on most of the nine holes. They have a giant spin to win wheel, a photo booth, drive the dice, drink holes, food holes and fun everywhere you look.

Not only is this a good way to get involved in your downtown and support the ambassador program but it is also a great way to introduce yourself and/or your product(s) to your downtown business people.

Rich has been organizing the group for four years and loves it. “I get to share my knowledge with the younger generation, it is a big thing. I went to school for five years to learn about trees and it is very interesting to bring that to a level which children can use.

I get to help grow an appreciation for the natural world in a younger generation,” says a passionate Rich.

The Kamloops Young Naturalists is suitable for children ages five to 12 and the cost is $25 per year per family. With this membership a family will get four magazines a year, which has all different activities, Explorer Days ten months a year and activity emails which parents can do on their own time.

“I am stepping away from my involvement with the coordination, so the local club is looking for a new coordinator. My kids have grown,” comment Rich. “I am handing the reins over to another parent or volunteer.”

Library wellness worshop The TNRD Library System is hosting a free informative talk and workshop at the Kamloops Library put on by Inspire Chiropractic and Wellness Studio on Thursday, June 12, at 7:00pm.

The workshop will focus on factors that exacerbate the growing problem of neuro-developmental disorders, such as ADHD, autism, sensory-processing disorders and seizures, with a specific emphasis on the role of the brain and central

nervous system.

Inspire’s Dr. Robert Conroy will lead the workshop and offer direction on how to get your children’s nervous systems balanced and healthy again, as well as how to improve your child’s function and development, no matter the disorder.

Ruthe is an instructor at the Vancouver Burlesque Centre.

The United Way hosted Mark Brand at their annual Community Spirit Luncheon on Thursday, May 29. At only 37 years old, Mark Brand is one of Vancouver’s most recognized social entrepreneurs. He successfully operates eight businesses in the downtown area and is a fighter for Vancouver’s Downtown East Side. Mark has been invited to share his message of social enterprise and business at numerous conferences and universities in North America, as well as world-renowned events such as TED Talks. It’s time to meet Cameron Staff at the CAP Team As a recent graduate of the journalism program at Thompson Rivers University, it only made sense that I would be the designated writer for the summer. Along with writing all of the Echo articles, I am also heading a new web series for KCBIA entitled “People of the Neighborhood,” which will feature downtown businesses and their stories. Keep an eye out for it online.

This is my first summer staying in Kamloops, and originally being from the Vancouver area, I am a little worried about the desert heat. However, there is no other job I would rather have. Interacting with locals, tourists, merchants and everyone else in between, keeps the position very interesting. With a job like the CAP Team, no day is ever the same, which should make for a fantastic and rewarding summer.

Along with daily street patrols, and individual projects, the team will be actively working on events throughout the summer. This is another aspect of the position that is extremely appealing to me, as I will be starting my Events Management Diploma this September at TRU. The Spring

Outdoor bowling fun The Kamloops Riverside Lawn Bowling Club is having an Open House on June 7 starting at 10:30am starting at Riverside Park. Kamloops City Councillor Ken Christian will officially open the event.

The club is active from May

National Health and Fitness Day In celebration of the second Annual National Health and Fitness Day initiative, the City of Kamloops is hosting a free group fitness class and expo on June 7.

Everyone is invited to join for this 75-minute fitness class that includes Zumba, cardio, strength, Pilates and yoga. The class will take place in the Tournament Capital Centre’s indoor fieldhouse, starting at 9:00am.

Different instructors from across the community will come together to instruct this one-of-a-kind class, including: Jacqueline GeoffrionKamloops Community YMCAYWCA, Evelyne Penny – City of Kamloops , Cathy Bliault – City of Kamloops, Amber Durant Evolve Pilates Studio, Melissa Phillips - Evolve Pilates Studio and Joy Demsey - Kamloops Hot Yoga.

The event will be led by Jo Berry of RUNClub and Nelly Dever of Nelly’s Executive Fitness and will

include random draw prizes for participants. Many facilities from around town will have information booths set up to showcase their facilities and services. A Kids Zone will be available from 9:00am to 12:00pm and feature face painting, Kamloops Gymnastics and Trampoline Centre and Pacific Sport.

Awareness Day

The Kamloops Brain Injury Association is having its Activity and Awareness Day on Friday June 20 from 11:00am to 3:00pm at the Riverside Park Bandshell.

There will be local performers singing and dance. Free Yoga taught by Kamloops Hot Yoga from 12:15 to 12:45, a barbeque lunch by donation, a bouncy castle, face painting and familyfriendly games.
