BC Hydro seeks public feedback on long-term power plan BC Hydro has developed a draft plan to meet provincial electricity demand forecasted to grow by 50 per cent over the next 20 years as a result of economic expansion and population growth. The Integrated Resource Plan looks at the most cost-effective mix of conservation, generation and transmission resources to ensure customers continue to enjoy clean, safe and reliable electricity at affordable prices.

Recommendations in the draft plan include conserving more electricity through voluntary programs, incentives, codes and standards – increasing the energy savings target to 9,800 gigawatt hours per year (the equivalent of close to 891,000 homes).

More power generation, including the Site C dam currently in the environmental and regulatory review stage, and reinvesting in existing infrastructure – for example, adding a sixth generating unit at Revelstoke and buying more electricity from clean energy producers, including wind and run-of-river.

Given the long lead time necessary to plan and construct new

power infrastructure, BC Hydro has to look well into the future. Fifty years ago, that meant having the foresight to build large hydro generating facilities to meet the energy needs of baby boomers’ growing families and the province’s forestry-driven economy.

Today, BC Hydro energy planners use sophisticated modelling techniques to calculate customers’ future needs, taking into account everything from economic forecasts to population projections. Having electricity ready when it’s needed

is essential to supporting new economic development– whether it’s new homes, new mines, the hightech industry or natural gas companies looking to hook up to our clean electricity grid.

In 2011, BC Hydro conducted province-wide consultation to gather input into development of the Integrated Resource Plan, and from now until July 6, BC Hydro is asking for public feedback on the draft plan. A separate consultation process for First Nations is also underway, involving regional workshops

this summer.

KAG Director receives Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal Kamloops Art Gallery (KAG) Executive Director, Jann L.M. Bailey along with museum professionals from across Canada, has been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

The Canadian Museums Association (CMA) honoured 37 of its members with the presentation of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Awarded to Canadians who have made significant contributions, the medals were presented during the CMA’s 65th National Conference. The CMA was chosen as one of the few non-governmental organizations invited to recommend these limited number of commemorative medals.

In their presentation to Governor General of Canada, David Johnston who oversaw the approval process, the CMA acknowledged Dr. Jann Bailey, FCMA, for her enthusiasm and lifelong conviction that art and culture add to the quality of life and her leadership during her Presidencies of the Canadian Museums Association and the Canadian Art Museum’s Director’s Organization.

This new commemorative medal, which is to “honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians, was created to mark the international celebrations throughout 2012 of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II accession to the Throne.

and the Philippines, to converge in Kamloops for a series of workshops and exhibitions.

Coordinated by Kamloops artist Tricia Sellmer, member of the Transarts Collective, Connecting the Dots grew in a very organic way, as Sellmer initiated collaborations or conversations between artists

Kamloops to host international Track and Field event in 2014 The Kamloops Bid Committee for the 2015 Pan Am Junior Track and Field Championships were pleased with the strength of their bid presentation, made to Athletics Canada last week in Ottawa. While Edmonton was awarded the event, Athletics Canada, recognizing the strength of the Kamloops bid and the desire to host, instead asked the Kamloops Committee to host the 2014 Under 23 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships. This is an equally significant international Track and Field Event, governed by

the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations).

Two athletes per country per event could attend this event. The estimate is that approximately 500 athletes, coaches and team staff would attend the NACAC U23 Championships.

“We are excited to get the chance to work with Athletics Canada and showcase Kamloops to the NACAC Athletics and look forward to a fantastic event in 2014,” said Byron McCorkell, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director for the City of Kamloops.

“This is an event that will attract significant attention for Kamloops. For the NACAC Athletes it would be a stepping stone to the 2016 Olympics in Brazil,” said Bob Cowden, Chair of the NACAC Kamloops 2014 - Track and Field.

“The Kamloops Track and Field Club is excited to host this event as it will be the second high-level IAAF sanctioned event in Kamloops. The athletes involved are usually preparing for a World Championships or Olympic Games,” commented Judy Armstrong, President of Kamloops Track and Field Club.

To kick-start The Solar Laundry Project, the City of Kamloops has joined countless other conservation-minded municipalities around the world in proclaiming June 2 to 8 as International Clothesline Week.

The project fits perfectly with the intent of the City’s Sustainability Plan which commits the City to encouraging and facilitating the increased use of clean, alternative energy sources in Kamloops, in order to reduce community energy use 20 percent by 2020, compared to 2010 levels.

Men’s health public forum Kamloops First Forum on Men’s Health will be held at Henry Grube Educational Centre, 245 Kitchener Crescent.

The first of two meetings open to the public, is scheduled for June 14 from 9:00am until 12:00pm. This will provide an overview of the current state of men’s health and mental health followed by a presentation given

by James Thompson from TRU School of Nursing.

This first session, “Any Mother’s Son Will Do” aims to acknowledge the differences of genders for men’s health in a talk geared towards professionals wanting to incorporate “intentionality” into their practice. The presentation will cover where men can seek help, why acting like a ‘man’ puts men at risk for negative health outcomes and how men’s issues are related to the feminist movement.

The morning discussion will close by looking at future local directions for improving men’s health for the benefit of men as

well as women.

The general public are encouraged to attend and provide input during a Public Forum & Panel Discussion on Men’s Health, Mental Health and Fathers on June 13 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

Panellists will include Matt McLean of ASK Wellness, Doug Knowles from TRU’s MECA program, Chris Hunt, a Mental Health Clinician and Jeff Conners, UBCO Student.

Those interested can drop in and find answers to questions such as why men die four years earlier than women, are three times more likely to commit suicide, lead in 14 of the 15 primary causes of death and make up for 95 percent of workplace deaths. Coordinator, Jeff Connors noted, “Men’s health often falls upon women.”

A new goal for Iccha/Wish Fund Saturday, June 16 marks the date of the 3rd Annual Iccha/Wish Fundraiser Dinner at the Ukrainian Hall, 725 York Avenue. The evening will begin with Cocktails at 6pm, followed by dinner, provided

by Flavours of India, entertainment, an auction, and door prizes.

Founded in 2007, the Iccha/ Wish Fund is a community initiative started by founder, Al Patel of Scott’s Inn and Restaurant.

The Iccha/Wish Fund has fundraised over $212,000 for Royal Inland Hospital Foundation.

Iccha means “wish” in many languages of India. “When someone is sick in the hospital, we wish them well but that is not good enough… we have to do more!

A wish for a healthy community can come true by businesses and individuals giving back for the benefit of all who rely on Royal Inland Hospital,” said Patel.
