Downtown business with socks appeal A local downtown retailer has a unique way to engage its clients. McAllister and Howard Clothiers has been serving the community for 100 years; this turn of the century store has some hip new ideas. An established business has the responsibility to continue to engage its customer base. It is easy to just do the same old thing and not change with the times, but businesses who work to keep their customers interested in shopping locally thrive year after year. To keep their business fresh and exciting, owner David Fuoco has a few tricks up his pant legs; he has started a Sock Club. David is the resident sock expert in Kamloops and spends his days helping men find the perfect socks at McAllister and Howard Clothiers. These aren’t your regular Fruit of the Loom socks that come in a clear plastic bag; these are highclass and exotic socks. “We are getting men excited about something,” comments David about the new business venture he undertook in February of this year with starting the Sock Club at McAllister and Howard Clothiers. “It is something to have fun with with our customers,” David adds. Men’s socks have been a great addition to the menswear in the shop. He has found a way for people to shop in the local community and

turn them away from buying online. David is inspiring a whole generation to feel empowered to enjoy socks. Long socks are intriguing to people - they suggest the old-style great gentleman. They are playful, erotic, passionate, exhilarating, and most of all, pleasurable. “It is all very informal and casual,” says David. “We can send your socks to you in the mail each month or you can stop by the shop.” The Sock Club is month-by-month memberships where you get a new pair of bright and colourful socks on the first of each month; there is no commitment. The Cole and Parker brand offers quality items at an affordable price. Sock Club member Daniel Houghton, administrator for the Teague Brinkwork team at the Mortgage Centre has been a long time customer of McAllister and Howard Clothiers. “David is quite friendly and knowledgeable and they carry high end products,” comments Daniel. There was no hesitation from this lad to sign up for the monthlys socks: “It is a good opportunity to get a pair of socks without having to think about it. David brings them to me, so I don’t have to try and pick a pair.” David personally has about 75 sock pairs in his collection at home: - continued on page 2

MEDITATIVE GONG SHOW
Kamloops’ Long and McQuade store hosted a free music clinic, dubbed L&M University, for pros and enthusiasts on Sunday. The evening was part performance and part education as resident gong expert Rob Gretsinger’s extensive 48-gong collection was on display while he led a discussion about the history of gongs, along with a demonstration of various playing techniques. The next free L&M University clinic is Friday, March 28 from 7 to 8:30pm: Getting Started with Computer Recording with Dan Sczebel. Dan will demonstrate the construction of a song from start to finish using ProTools software. Micing techniques, plugin usage and mixdown will also be covered. Dan is a Juno award winning producer/engineer based in Kamloops.
Builder named for hospital building Interior Health announced that it has selected Bird Construction Inc. as its preferred proponent to design and build the new Clinical Services Building (CSB) at Royal Inland Hospital. “Royal Inland Hospital plays a critical role in health care in the Interior and we’re moving forward with our commitment to the community,” says Health Minister Terry Lake. “Today’s announcement brings us that much closer to the start of construction on the Clinical Services Building.” “The Clinical Services Building will feature new expanded clinical outpatient space, medical school teaching space, additional parking and improved access that will benefit patients here in Kamloops as well as in the surrounding region,” says Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone. “I am happy to see the project continue to move forward.” Three pre-qualified proponents were shortlisted in August 2013 for the Request for Proposal (RFP) stage. Following review and careful evaluation of the final submissions, Bird Construction emerged as the preferred proponent. The Bird project team was also the design-builder of the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery
Centre and the RCMP ‘E’ Division Headquarters, both in Surrey. The CSB project cost is approximately $79.8 million, and will be shared between the Province and the Thompson Regional Hospital District. “It’s great to see that we are moving one step closer to the start of construction for the Clinical Services Building,” says Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar, Chair of the Thompson Regional Hospital District. “The
expansion of this hospital has been one of my priorities as Mayor and Chair of the TRHD, and I want to thank Interior Health for continuing to move this important project forward.” Construction on the building is expected to commence this spring and will take approximately two years to complete. For more information about this major capital project visitbuildingpatientcare.ca.
Earth hour makes a difference The City of Kamloops wants to celebrate Earth Hour with you. So turn down the thermostat, turn off the lights, unplug your electronics, and bring the whole family out for two free movies to be shown on the score clock at Interior Savings Centre! Come out on March 29 for this free Double Feature Movie Night of Walking with Dinosaurs starting at 6:30pm and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty at 8:15pm. Concessions will be open, so you can grab a beverage and popcorn to enjoy during the show. Be sure to bring a blanket to keep warm.
Want to get a little more active during Earth Hour? Come out for the Dim Swim at Canada Games Pool from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund that encourages individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics to conserve power and demonstrate support for climate change reduction efforts. Unplug and make a difference; a bigger difference than you think! Last year during Earth Hour, Kamloopsians reduced their electrical usage by 2.2 percent. For more information, visit kamloops.ca or earthhour.org.
On Saturday, April 5, the City of Kamloops, Kamloops Long Blades and PacificSport are hosting a celebration to welcome home our athletes and officials. Join speed skating silver medalist Jessica Hewitt, slalom and alpine skier Elli Terwiel, Dianne Barker, International Technical Official for curling; and Jan Antons, Equipment Manager for the bronze-medaling 2014 Men’s Olympic Sledge Hockey Team, at McArthur Island Olympic Ice Sheet from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. From 1:00pm to 2:00 pm, everyone is welcome to strap on a pair of skates and try out speed skating. Bring your own skates, or the Long Blades will have a limited number of skates available to try.
The joy of socks - continued from front “My wife isn’t too happy about it taking up two drawers.” David has to cycle through his socks or it would take him two months just wash all of his socks. “I think it is an innovative business idea and I like to invest in innovative ideas,” adds Daniel. “I currently have ten lively pairs of socks.” The exquisite socks not only make Daniel’s feet sing, they provide him with a way to showcase his personality while being professional. “I wear a grey suit and black shoes,” Daniel says. “The bright yellow, red and blue socks stick out when I sit down. I work in finance and with my socks I am is not just not another number. People think ‘he has style and attitude.’” There are currently over ten members to the Sock Club. Many have signed themselves up, but mothers have taken it upon themselves to introduce this joy to their sons. One gentleman even gets his socks mailed to Dawson Creek each month via Canada Post. Since 1914, McAllister and Howard Clothiers has been a leading menswear store, featuring quality clothing in downtown Kamloops. They carry a wide range of medium to high-end clothing. The products they carry all embody great craftsmanship as well as fashionable design. Call David at 250-372-9588 or stop by 235 Victoria Street to sign up to learn the true joy of socks. Free augmentative education session
The MS Society of Canada is hosting free Spring education session at the Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Centre (1955 Tranquille Road, 2nd floor “Bistro”) on April 9 from 10:30am to 12:00pm. Michelle Bunney is a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) for Interior Health, in charge of the Interior Health Authority Regional chapter of CAYA (Communication Assistance for Youth and Adults). to individuals 19 and older who require augmentative and alternative communication such as communication books, boards and technology devices. CAYA clients have a variety of communication needs and reasons for requiring communication aids, such as Parkinson’s, ALS, MS, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Laryngectomy, Dementia, Autism, etc. Michelle’s philosophy as a SLP is to remove the barriers preventing full expression of one’s personality through improving
access to communication. Before working for CAYA, Michelle worked with preschool children with speech and language needs. She is also a devoted yoga practitioner and teacher and she incorporates her knowledge of breath, posture and movement into her work as an SLP. You may register for this free session by contacting Cyndi at the Chapter office, 250-314-0773 or by email at cyndi.lion@mssociety. ca. Please register by April 3 as space is limited.
The Kamloops Arts Council and the Phoenix Centre are collaborating to create an accessible art show for emerging and professional local artists and creative minds. They are looking for submissions of artwork from throughout the community; artists and non-artists alike. Art has always been a medium that can heal and express one’s thoughts and points of view on a subject. The theme of Bearing Witness is to show various interpretations of substance use, and its effects on a community, a society, a family, a circle of friends, a body and/or on the mind. “Substance use is an issue that affects so many of us,” says Kathy Sinclair, executive director of the Kamloops Arts Council. “Although there’s a stigma around it, by holding this art exhibition, we hope to open a dialogue and give people a chance to express themselves.” “To borrow from a very old adage, ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’,” says Sian Lewis, executive director of the Phoenix Centre. Art is a powerful approach in helping people speak about a subject that is typically avoided, downplayed, ignored and very often misunderstood. Substance use affects all of us directly or indirectly; and akin to any other social issue, we can only make positive changes by opening our hearts and minds.” All mediums both 2D and 3D will be accepted. Artwork must be properly framed; call 250-372-7323 for more info. There is no application process, simply drop-off your artwork to the KAC office (Old Courthouse Cultural Centre, 7 Seymour Street West) on April 15 and 16 from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

FUNNY PAGES
Useless flying directions
family getaway
A helicopter pilot is flying to Seattle and hits a pea-soup-thick fog bank. He’s completely disoriented and flies blindly around until he spies the top few floors of an office building. He pulls up real close to it and gets the attention of a woman sitting at her desk. “Excuse me!” he yells to the woman. “Where am I?” “You’reinahelicopter,”she replies. The pilot pulls off sharply to the left, takes one or two crisp
turns through the dense fog, and then does a perfect blind landing at the Seattle-Tacoma Airport. “That was amazing!” says a passenger. “How did you know from that woman’s answer where you were?” “Easy,” says the pilot. “Her answer, while correct, was absolutely useless. So I immediately knew the building had to be Microsoft Tech Support.”
Anonymous compliments A man walked into a bar and heard, “Great tie!” He looked around and seeing no one, he heard again, “Beautiful suit!” Wondering what was going on, he saw the bartender walk up and said, “I heard a
voice talking about my suit and tie, and that they looked cool, but no one’s around. Dude, what’s up?” The bartender smiled, “Oh yeah, those are the peanuts. They’re complimentary!”
Useful phrases for high stress days Maybe it’s the new surroundings, the fact that everyone is out of his or her normal routine or maybe family members are feeling a little more adventurous, but family vacations seem to provide the perfect conditions for awkward moments and photos. Oboe, bassoon and piano are a perfect symphonic blend The Kamloops Symphony Chamber Music Series presents A Perfect Blend on Saturday, March 29, 2014 in the TRU Alumni (clock tower) Theatre at 7:30 pm. This month, they are proud to feature a trio: Marea Chernoff, oboe; Olivia Martin, bassoon; and Naomi Cloutier, piano.
Naomi performs frequently in a variety of ensembles as well as in the orchestra on piano, harp and keyboard, sometimes all at once! Marea, their principal oboist, and Olivia, their principal bassoonist, have both appeared as soloists in previous seasons in addition to their
ongoing positions within the orchestra. This will be a great opportunity to get to know them better as individuals. About their program, the trio wrote, “The combination of oboe, bassoon and piano creates a wonderful sound that many composers have
written works for over the years but is not often heard in recital. The two double reeds blend together beautifully while maintaining their unique timbres and the piano adds a depth and richness.” Tickets are available at Kamloops Live! Box Office.

echo stargazer ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) Watch your temper. The explosion could be in your home territory. Are you seeking independence? Think carefully about the consequences of making demands. TAURUS (Apr. 21-May 21) Love life appears interesting. You have two options. One is someone you would rather avoid. Be honest and as tactful as you can. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You have a desire to celebrate. The temptation to overspend is strong. Consider what would be fun and interesting that doesn’t require a big expenditure. CANCER (June 22-July 22) You and your product(s) are on display during this period. Maybe you didn’t even intend it, but it is time to be noticed and respected. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) You may be the pivoting party in a conflict among others. If you can manage to be even-handed rather than throwing lightning bolts around, you stand a good chance of accomplishing your aim. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 23) Love, romance, social and group life is favorable and brings you pleasure. You and a significant other may find healing to an old problem that has been unconsciously sabotaging the relationship. LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23 You have concerns about financial matters. Probably you are stifling your expenditures as much as possible. Meanwhile your love life has turned around and is going smoothly. Another green light is related to your creative work. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) This is a week of nose to the grindstone. You are in a serious frame of mind and feel a need to get things accomplished that began earlier in the year. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) This is a time in which your exuberance and enthusiasm may carry you farther than you really intended to go. Take care that you don’t promise way more than you can deliver. There will be consequences for that. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) You may be feeling challenged in the pocketbook at this time. You know how to tighten your belt. Do so without a lot of whiney thought and you’ll feel better. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Don’t allow fear and pessimism to interfere with your pleasure in life. If something is nagging at you, take a clear and direct look at it. Is there really anything there, or have you invented your own worry? PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) You are continuing in a very creative mode. Whatever medium you use, it becomes art and is in touch with the Greater Unconscious. It will turn out well. Celebrate Earth Hour... with a Movie Night! The City of Kamloops wants to celebrate Earth Hour with you. So turn down the thermostat, turn off the lights, unplug your electronics, and bring the whole family out for two free movies to be shown on the score clock at Interior Savings Centre! Come out on Sat, March 29th for this FREE Double Feature Movie Night: 5:30 pm - Doors open to public 6:30 pm - Walking with Dinosaurs 8:15 pm - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Concessions will be open, so you can grab a beverage and popcorn to enjoy during the show. Be sure to bring a blanket to keep warm. Some energy saving tips: Clean or replace your furnace filter every 1-2 months. A dirty filter reduces the airflow and forces the furnace to work harder. Hang clothes to dry, or add a dry towel to the dryer to speed up drying time.
