Expose yourself to amazing art! All you need to do is step one foot into the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre and you will soon realize that you are in for a treat. The Kamloops Arts Council, which is one of the permanent residents of the heritage brick building, has taken up all the available space to present to Kamloops one of their banner events of the year; Art Exposed. “Art Exposed is a ten-day open art exhibition showcasing the work of emerging, amateur and professional artists of all ages – youth to senior,” explains Kathy Sinclair, executive director of the Kamloops Arts Council. “We invite artists in all mediums Sara Sondergaard with her and at all levels to enter; all artwork painting in Art Exposed. is displayed in the Old Courthouse and prizes are awarded.” Aimed to be surprised at the caliber of the art and all the different mediums displayed. There are some inquisitive modern pieces and unique items, which have been transformed from normal to something you would expect to see in an art buffs collection. There are lockers, which have been painted, beautifully crafted clothing, sculptures, jewelry and collages. All pieces come with a story which makes the journey through the courthouse that much more appealing. “Now in its 5th year, the Kamloops Arts Council’s Art Exposed Open Exhibition is a community-centred visual arts exhibit,” continues Kathy. “Unique to Kamloops, Art Exposed is open; all residents of the TNRD are invited to submit artwork in any medium – 2D and 3D.” Although the exhibit is open for all artists in the area to display their work, a special panel of jurors did go through the collection and award prizing to what they deemed the top artwork in the pile. Best in show went
Maurya’s
to Rebecca Shepherd for her sculpture titled Frank with Wendy Patrick, Dale Redfern and Bill Fell winning top places for their 2D pieces. Jaz Whitford, Donna Vanderlip and Mike Kehler took top honours for their 3D pieces. In the end, the juror’s picks have no bearing on your decisions of what your best in show and you will have a great time picking out your favourite at the show. Definitely worth the trip up to the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre, it will probably be close to the best art show you have had the privilege of seeing. One other unique feature of the show this year is the ability to purchase or rent a selection of art that you can take home to enjoy for longer. In order to promote the Art Council’s foray into art rentals, they launched a super interesting Boring Office Contest leading up to the opening of the show. Residents of Kamloops were invited to submit pictures of their boring offices with the most boring being offered a variety of three month art rentals to help them spice things up a little bit. “By donation, we invite you to view and purchase or rent a diverse selection of original artwork for your home or business that won’t break the bank while supporting local upand-coming artists,” finishes Kathy. “At Art Exposed, you’ll find highquality paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, glass and much more. Plus, vote for your favourite piece in the People’s Choice Award.” Check out the 5th Annual Art Exposed presented by the Kamloops Arts Council at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre. The exhibit is open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm right until March 8. Tanya Orozco, freelance BEST LUNCH BUFFET IN TOWN MON - FRI

New trauma room revealed at RIH Every minute counts when it comes to saving a life. Physicians and nurses at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) will now have better access to the equipment they need to save lives thanks to the installation of two new ceiling-mounted medical booms in the emergency department. The new medical booms are part of a recently completed renovation to the RIH Emergency Department’s trauma room. New ceiling-mounted procedure lights and room renovations to accommodate the new equipment complete the project. The trauma room, located adjacent to the larger emergency department, has two bays for the care of critically ill or injured patients. Previously, medical equipment was anchored to a floor column at the head of the bed – a location that could provide a challenge for both physicians and nurses who are trying to position equipment to treat patients during the delivery of urgent or emergent care. Enter Kamloops resident Guy Mercier who, upon learning how easily movable ceiling-mounted medical booms would enhance trauma care, donated $130,000 for the equipment through the RIH Foundation. The foundation then took on the additional cost of the entire renovation project, at an es-

timated total budget of $437,000. “Government’s priority is to ensure access to quality health-care services across B.C. We also know that partnerships with communities help us achieve this goal. I’m pleased to see this generous donation from the RIH Foundation for the benefit of patients in the Royal Inland Hospital Emergency Department as well as the contribution from Guy Mercier, whose donation will help save lives.” Said Terry Lake, Health Minister. In addition to this project, the Foundation donated $160,000
for two ultrasound machines and two Glidescopes, both of which will be mounted on the booms. An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create internal images of the body, such as the stomach, liver, heart or blood vessels. A Glidescope aids in airway management and intubation. The RIH Evening Auxiliary graciously donated $50,000 to go toward the purchase of one of the ultrasound machines. The trauma room renovation was complete on February 24.

Prescribed Burn in Kenna Cartwright Park Find The Echo on Facebook It’s always good news!
It’s always good news! #1 - 219 Victoria Street 374-ECHO (3246) email us at: echo@ shawcable.com
The City of Kamloops is partnering with the provincial Wildfire Management Branch, Kamloops Fire Rescue and a local contractor, who will act as burn boss, to perform a prescribed burn in Kenna Cartwright Nature Park this spring. Starting March 4, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations will have a crew in the park doing site preparation work, which will include slashing and piling of debris, clearing areas around wildlife trees so that they are preserved, and ensuring that existing trails and roads are cleared and will act as fire boundaries. A “black line” will be put in along the eastern
boundary where there are no existing roads or natural fire- guards. A black line consists of a controlled burn strip that prevents fire from spreading, since there are no longer fuels available in that area. Once the site preparation
is finished, Wildfire Management Branch staff and the burn boss will monitor the weather, venting index and site conditions and will indicate when burning should occur. Signage will be put up at all the Kenna Cartwright
Nature Park entrances explaining what a prescribed burn is and showing a map of the burn area. The City asks that park users stay out of the burn area for their safety, as well as the safety of crews working in the area.
Support for seniors in Kamloops MP Cathy McLeod recently announced $125,740 in funding for Kamloops organizations for community-based projects that are led or inspired by seniors. The City of Kamloops will receive $9,700 for the Tournament Capital Centre Hand Railing project from the New Horizon for Seniors Program. Oncore Central Services will receive $16,040 for the ‘Friendly Visits with a Focus project.’ Kamloops Women’s Resource Group Society will receive $25,000 for the ‘Behind the Curtain: Women Victims of Elder Abuse’ project. North Shore Community Centre Society will receive
$25,000 for their Dogwood Room Renovations and Painting project. Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music will receive $25,000 for their Seniors Making Music project. The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #52, Kamloops will receive $25,000 for their flooring project. “Our government recognized the valuable contribution seniors have made to our society and the economy. By supporting New Horizons for Seniors Program projects, we are acting to ensure that seniors maintain a good quality of life and continue to be active members of our community,” concluded McLeod.

InCar receives funding The Interior CarShare Co-operative has announced that Interior Savings Credit Union has provided the organization with $15,000 in seed funding. “This generous grant means we’re one step closer to getting vehicles on the road,” said Dylan Houlihan, acting president of InCar. Interior Savings presented Interior CarShare Co-operative (InCar) with the cheque at InCar’s Info Session last week. “Interior Savings is pleased to support InCar with this grant. Initiatives like car sharing align well with our mission of supporting sustainable community de-
velopment,” says Gene Creelman, Interior Savings’ senior vice president of Member and Community Engagement. In addition to its financial support, Interior Savings has also become an organizational member of InCar, joining Urban Systems, Kamloops Innovation and other businesses. InCar still needs a few more members to sign up before it can start operations, says Houlihan. Western Blind Curling Association hosts championships The Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) is a National not-for-profit organization of the blind, run by the blind and its founding in 1944 by veterans from both world wars was an important point in their efforts to have Canadian society recognize and respond appropriately to the tragic loss of vision that confronted many for the rest of their lives. The vets and their families faced challenges in a society not particularly open to their medical and social requirements. The CCB’s founding reflected the determination by those vets to ensure their voices would be heard directly. They insisted that their voices, those of the blind and vision impaired community, were essential to enable them to attain their potential in a Canada that would necessarily have to develop as a society to provide for such a possibility. The CCB strives to promote healthy living through social, recreational and sporting activities. Many CCB members are also affiliated with individual sports organizations including regional, provincial and national associations
such as the Canadian Blind Sports Association, West Coast Blind Curling Association and the Western Blind Curling Association (WBCA). Players participate at the provincial level, which leads to the Westerns and the National CCB Canadian Visually Impaired Curling Championships held each year in Ottawa during National White Cane Week in February. British Columbia is hosting the fortythird annual WBCA Championships in
Kamloops from March 18 to 21 at the Kamloops Curling Club, 700 Victoria Street. The WBCA represents the four western provinces British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and under normal circumstances, the annual championship takes place in each province on a rotational basis. A total of seven teams from the four western provinces will visit Kamloops to compete for the western title.

Kamloops Symphony’s next performance Soul Music will feature music from the heart on Saturday, March 7 at Sagebrush Theatre, with guest soloist Nicolò Eugelmi. Eugelmi’s first appearance with the Kamloops Symphony was as the winner of their “New Celebrity Competition” in 1996. Eugelmi played Walton’s Viola Concerto then and, on March 7, he returns to play the same piece. “He’s had an exceptional career so far,” said Bruce Dunn, Kamloops Symphony music director. “He has had solo appearances with some fabulous orchestras. I’m looking forward to hearing this Viola Concerto almost 20 years later.” This programme features music by Brahms and Dvořák, in addition to Walton. All three composers have a soulful quality, and combined make up the Soul Music programme. Tickets can be purchased at 250-374-5483 or kamloopslive.ca, or at the door.

Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Sometimes in relationships our hearts are more exposed than we intended. If it’s meant to be then the waters will suddenly clear. If not, there’ll be a storm. On the other side, you’ll know which way you’ll be most inspired. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You’d like to be left alone to meditate but a burst of energy shortens your temper. As you’re reflecting remember to look after your health. Connecting mind and body will fatten your pocketbook and steer you away from needless drama. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Keep a pencil close to the bed. Unusual dreams bring peace to an inner conflict. Shortly, you’ll know which way to choose. Intense feelings of creativity and personal expression find a playful outlet. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) You never know who you’re going to meet when you say hello to a stranger. Most of the time it doesn’t seem to matter and we discard the encounter. But sometimes it opens a hidden door. Remember to smile. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) If you’ve been pushing the career then brace for the unexpected. Sometimes dream jobs really do just appear. You’ve been grinding it out lately waiting for some kind of bonus or at least finish line. If it doesn’t fall from the tree then reach up and grab it. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Luck calls from a far away land. If you’re offered a trip then take it. A clear path is being formed in front of you. You just need to take the steps. Watch the pennies but take a chance. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You’re not going to be able to hide but then again you don’t have to anymore. You’re finally coming out of your cocoon and spreading your wings. A joint partnership suddenly catches a break so be prepared to move when the opportunity knocks. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) You’re probably used to partners being weird or lovers surprising you with strange reactions by now but this week they’re going to up the charm and get it right. Romantic gestures and maybe even a declaration are in store. Be quick to forgive and even quicker to say yes. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) This is a good time to pad the reputation in all things Scorpio. I wouldn’t waste my time with maybes when you have all of those yeses lining up. Don’t wait. Obstacles melt from your seductive stare. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’re surrounded by so much creativity and love right now that all you want to do is get out and play. You deserve it but keep your cell close. The office is going to call with news on an old project. Have fun but also make some money on the way. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) It’s time to ground yourself again. Not physically, so you won’t be going to yoga but you will change your environment. Spruce things up and surround yourself with things that help you shine. Your inner ambition is reflected in someone close. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) A financial revelation could swing either way. Sudden conversations could lead to a short escape. Keep speaking. Accidental words lead to unexpected fortunes.
