Finding festive pleasure in the vine Are you a person devoted to luxury and pleasure, even to wanton excess? Then you need to do three things: revel in our fabulous area landscapes, try many different wines, perhaps even with the winemaker himself and then go and eat. This will be prove to be an easy task March 7 to 16 when the wine world will be in the Kamloops region with unique culinary experiences, excursions and extravaganzas that will shine the spotlight on all things of the vine. Over ten days, the Kamloops Wine Festival will feature wine tastings and pairings, gourmet dinners and educational discussion with proceeds supporting the Kamloops Art Gallery (KAG) and their initiatives. This is the gallery’s biggest spring fundraiser and is anticipated every year by those who love art and fine food and wine. The inaugural festival began in 1998 and is now in its 15th year, attracting industry names from around the world showcasing their wines as well as out of town guests eager for a destination weekend. Of course the event remains a favourite for locals alike. The festival presents a rare opportunity to meet owners, winemakers and representatives from BC wineries and around the globe. This is a collaboration between acclaimed local and regional members of a dynamic hospitality community that brings many special wine related events at restaurants in the area. Highlights include an outing to a Taste of the Shuswap Friday, March 8 at Jack Sams’s at Quaaout Lodge where an optional night stay package is available. Another unique setting for the festival is Black Iron Restaurant at Tobiano. On Saturday, March

Vision & Learning We are pleased to announce that Dr. Donald Sanford has joined our practice. Dr. Sanford has been practicing optometry since graduating from Pacific University in 1981. New patients and referrals welcome!

Have you ever considered how much your child uses his or her eyes when in school? 80% of what we learn is through our eyes. Your optometrist can check your child’s eyes to see if they are efficient for learning. Important visual skills for learning include: visual acuity (ability to see clearly), fixation (ability to focus on a word and follow a line of print), accommodation (ability to adjust focus from far to near), binocular vision (ability to use the two eyes together efficiently), convergence, stereopsis, field of vision and perception. Visit Takahashi Optometry Centre before your child gets behind in school.

Area film map unveiled

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s Film Commission is unveiling a new website: the TNRD Locations Movie Map (tnrdlocationsmoviemap.com), which showcases the various productions (film, TV, commercials, documentaries) that have filmed in the Regional District. The website features a Google Map of the Regional District with icons indicating where more than 100 projects across 250 locations were filmed. Visitors to the website can find out where a project was shot, information about cast and crew, view location photos, read a brief synopsis of the project and discover little-known facts about the making of projects. There are also links to movie databases and trailers.

– continued from page 1 provided by the Coast Kamloops Inn and Conference Centre. “This is your opportunity to try some wines that may have never been tried before, also a chance to find some new favourites,” says Judy Basso, fundraising event coordinator with KAG. The event features British Columbia wines and also wines from all over the world. In fact, well over 100 wines will be available for taste samples that evening. Discover Wines, known for their selection of BC wine, local artisan foods, gift baskets, wine education and Wine Club will offer up exceptional prizes you can enter to win by visiting their exhibition booth at the Consumer Wine Tasting event. This spring the retailer will be opening up a Kamloops location at Columbia Square Mall. Tickets for the tasting event are $45 per person and are available at

the KAG, Prestons Restaurant in the Coast Kamloops Hotel. Wine festival rates are available until March 9 at the Coast Hotel for attendees. Pamper yourself with a stay in a newly renovated room that is a stones throw away and indulge in a salt water pool and hot tub. For either the experienced wine lover or the novice, this riotous festival festival has something to please every palate and and provides an unparalleled opportunity to enhance your knowledge with fruitful discussion. Why don’t you have another glass of wine before you go? Join your peers at this local symposia of the vine. It will truly be a memorable experience, if you can manage the self control to hold back, that is. Thankfully there is a bylaw that bans roosters in the city so the populous will not be woken too early in the morning. Jody Tippett

Food choices for Nutrition Month March is Nutrition Month - the perfect time to start thinking about how food choices can affect your health. Small changes can pay off big by reducing your risk, and your family’s risk, for obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Interior Health has a few simple tips to help you make healthier food choices. Plan weekly meals. Spend a few minutes before you shop and plan your meals for the week; it’s one of the best ways to save money and time. Once you know what meals you

are going to eat, you are ready to make a grocery shopping list. A shopping list not only keeps you on track, it can also help you make healthier choices. A list helps you avoid the temptation to buy heavily promoted processed foods which often are less nutritious. Grow some of your own food. Many of us have heard the saying “healthy eating begins at the grocery store.” While this is true it’s important to remember that healthy eating can also begin with a visit to your local farmers’ market, and

you can grow your own food as well. Eat your meals together. Mealtime is an excellent time to connect as a family. Make the most of meal times by turning off the TV, phones and other distracting electronics. Families who eat together are healthier and happier. Children who have meals with their families eat more vegetables and fruit. For more nutrition information: Contact a registered dietitian at HealthLink, healthlinkbc. ca/dietitian. or visit dietitians.ca.

A rock and an indecent proposal

An Irishman, by the name of O’Malley proposed to his girl on St. Patrick’s Day. He gave her a ring with a synthetic diamond. The excited young lass showed it to her father, a jeweller. He took one look at it and saw it wasn’t real. The young lass on learning it wasn’t real returned to her future husband. She protested vehemently about his cheapness. ‘It was in honour of St. Patrick’s Day, ‘he smiled.‘I gave you a sham rock.’
