International Women’s Day (IWD) is a time to recognize women for their social, economic, cultural and political achievements. On Wednesday, March 8, many community programs and local businesses hosted special events to celebrate the strength, power and potential of women and girls. Emiko Ohama, president of the TRUSU Lean In - Leadership for Gender Equality Club, was the driving force behind the International Women’s Day Empower Conference. Emiko said, “conversation about health, wellness, leadership and gender equality are our top focuses.” She also encourages others to become engaged in community efforts. “It’s really quite simple – extend yourself to help others.” The conference held at Thompson Rivers University boasted three keynote speakers: United Nations Policy Advocate, Climate Change Activist and Global Speaker Steve S.J. Lee; Internationally Award Winning Speaker and Career Strategist Courtney Kirschbaum; and Psychic Medium, Michelle Morrison. IWD is also an opportunity to take a political stance against gender disparity. A Day Without a Woman “reaffirms our commitment to the Principles of Unity, which were conceptualized for the Women’s March.” Following such efforts like the Day Without Immigrants across the United States, Women’s March organizers “stands in solidarity with the International Women’s Strike organizers, feminists of color and grassroots

groups in planning global actions for equity, justice and human rights.” A Day Without a Woman is a “demonstration of economic solidarity” that offers options that allow you to take a personal stance within your financial comfort zone. Women are encouraged to take the day off from paid and unpaid labor, avoid shopping for one day— with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses; or wear red in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman. A Day Without A Woman, recognizes the “enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system--while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment and job insecurity.” Strike organizers acknowledge, “trans and gender nonconforming people face heightened levels of discrimination, social oppression and political targeting.” In commemoration of IWD, the Kamloops Film Festival is collaborating with the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA Violence Against Women Intervention and Support Services to help them collect some much needed items. YMCA-YWCA frontline staff have noted some gaps in items that they like to have on hand at the shelter for passing along to the women and their children: face-wash/ cleanser, deodorant, hair elastics, headbands & bobby pins, tampons, hair conditioner, pillows, towels, nail clippers, - continued on page 2

City of Kamloops leads the way in arena safety

The City of Kamloops is pleased to announce it is in the process of completing safety netting installations at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre’s NHL rink, Valleyview Arena and Brock Arena. The new netting will be installed from end to end at each rink, in front of all spectator seating areas eliminating the risk of injuries from errant pucks, which will make the arenas safer for patrons. The project is the first of its kind in BC and will cost the City $19,000. Jeff Putnam, Parks and Civic Facilities Manager, is “proud to see Kamloops leading the way in making its arenas safer for patrons.” He said it “increases the quality of services that Kamloops, as the Tournament Capital of Canada, can offer.” The remaining rinks in Kamloops (Memorial Arena, McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre Olympic Rink, and the Sandman Centre) already have side glass heights equivalent to Western Hockey League standards and do not require safety netting.

Free health fair for World Kidney Day Thursday, March 9, marks the 10th annual World Kidney Day in Kamloops. Hosted by more than 150 countries worldwide, World Kidney Day is an international event that promotes awareness of kidney disease with an emphasis on prevention and early diagnosis. Kamloops City Council has proclaimed the month of March “Kidney Month” for the past nine years, in recognition of the impact kidney disease has. This year’s World Kidney Day will focus on obesity. Of those affected by obesity, 83 percent have an increased risk for chronic kidney disease. This risk may be attributed to the fact that those who are obese often struggle with high blood pressure and diabetes, two significant contributing factors in developing kidney disease. In partnership with the Kamloops Chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC & Yukon Branch, and Thompson Rivers University’s School of Nursing, a free public health fair

will take place at Northills Centre Mall on March 9 in honor of World Kidney Day. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will include a wide variety of health vendors and the chance to win free door prizes. Free blood pressure and blood glucose checks will also be offered as an initiative to screen participants for the risk factors linked to kidney disease. “Kidney disease is often diagnosed when the disease has already progressed to an advanced stage,” said Dr. Florriann Fehr, spokesperson for Thompson Rivers University’s School of Nursing. “The purpose of this event is to educate the public on how they can prevent kidney disease while also identifying those who might be at risk. If caught early, kidney disease can be treated effectively.” While risk factors like obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes may be manageable and preventable once a person is diagnosed

with advanced kidney disease, a person is likely to require lifelong care, as there is no cure for kidney disease. In most cases, transplantation and dialysis can be avoided by making healthy lifestyle choices. Within Kamloops, 1,250 people are living with chronic kidney disease, 165 people are on dialysis and 115 people have had a kidney transplant. Kidney disease is currently one of the top ten leading

causes of death in Canada, and one in 10 Canadians lives with kidney disease. Giggles – a colourful collection Local Artist Judylynn Davison presents an art exhibition Giggles March 15 - April 8, in the KAC Main Gallery at the Old Courthouse. There will also be an Artist Reception on Saturday March 18, 6:30-8:30pm where visitors can meet with Judylynn and ask her questions about her exhibit and experiences. This collection of colorful, humorous characters brings life to artist Judylynn’s favorite Spanish novel - Don Quixote. “My inspiration for this collection of art is the Spanish novel Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes. This Novel is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age. Bringing attention to this novel is my goal,” says Judylynn. Judylynn Davison was born in Kamloops. She moved with her family to Alberta at the age of ten, residing there until recently moving back to beautiful B.C. Judylynn is married and has a son who lives Calgary, Alberta. Art has been an interest of Judylynn’s since she was very young when she began designing and painting signs for businesses at the age of fifteen. Judylynn studied Basic Design at Lethbridge Community College and at the University of Lethbridge Fine Art Department. Creating a personal statement is very important to Judylynn and she works hard to incorporate that into her art. She loves acrylics because of the intense colors, but will always continue to try new ideas, which expand her techniques. For more information and photos of Judylynn’s work, visit www.kamloopsarts.ca.

heaven’s rewards

10 SeCond rule?

After a preacher died and went to heaven, he noticed that a New York cab driver had been awarded a higher place than he. “I don’t understand,” he complained to God. “I devoted my entire life to my congregation.” “Our policy here in heaven is to reward results,” God explained. “Now, was your congregation well attuned to you whenever you gave a sermon?” “Well,” the minister had to admit, “some in the congregation fell asleep from time to time.” “Exactly,” said God, “and when people rode in this man’s taxi, they not only stayed wake, they even prayed.”

dead ted

Two elderly women meet at the launderette after not seeing one another for some time. After inquiring about each other’s health, one asked how the other’s husband was doing. “Oh! Ted died last week. He went out to the garden to dig up a cabbage for dinner, had a heart attack, and dropped down dead right there in the middle of the vegetable patch!” “Oh dear! I’m so very sorry,” replied her friend, “What did you do?” “Opened a can of peas instead.”

ECHO STARGAZER Independent living with a sense of community!

DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Birthday wishes and friendly hellos widen your already beaming smile. Astro-energies have you focusing on daily chores and long-term goals. Money continues to sparkle but don’t break the bank. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) Old habits mix with new faces sending you on a romantic rollercoaster of emotional “what if’s”. Get out and play with your new friends but watch your pocketbook. Money is about to get tight. DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) The fight is almost over so hunker down and give one final push to clear the air. You’re still in a low energy cycle but that’s going to change shortly and you’ll have plenty of emotional gas to go the extra mile. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) Just as restrictions begin to lift on romantic possibilities the fates cast a major obstacle on your road to happiness. Tough it out and use the energy to create the relationship you desire. Be patient. Happily forever after is within reach. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) You’re in the romantic spotlight but finances are calling with a tempting invitation. Use the energy to shore up comforts at home. The world is calling for your attention but home is still where the heart is. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22) You may have been putting extra efforts into making the lives of others more beautiful recently. And although this is admirable, it’s time to take care of you. Hit the spa and splurge on that new outfit. You deserve it. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Love continues to green light relationships of all kinds. If you haven’t found your perfect match yet, keep looking. A reclusive mood paints the perfect emotional scene for fireside snuggles. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) When it comes to relationships few can match Libra’s natural ability to close the deal. So love shouldn’t be a problem but money woes can definitely cause ripples that jar the wheels of love. Team up and start filling your boots. DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Even though restriction on personal finances begin to lift and time becomes available for romantic pursuits, always keep recent lessons in mind. Obstacles fill the next leg of your romantic journey but true love is waiting on the other side of your adventure. DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) A long and difficult astro-cycle is about to color your financial picture. Extra efforts will be required at the office and a big dose of creativity will be required to make it through unscathed. Love favours a weekend escape. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Home repairs are on the horizon so begin saving for the unexpected. Love and partnerships call for a mid-week rendezvous that will definitely add spice to your spring fever. Daily chores still need to be streamlined. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) The new job becomes official and although it’ll take you away from home, it’ll also reveal unexpected opportunities. A playful attitude can transform someone close into more than just a friend.
