Temporary residential care beds open at Ponderosa Lodge Interior Health is pleased to announce funding to opens additional residential beds in Ponderosa Lodge. “We are pleased to be able to offer this interim solution while the new residential care facility in Kamloops is being built,” says Kamloops South-Thompson MLA Kevin

Krueger. “This will help meet the need in the region and ease pressures within Royal Inland Hospital.” The introduction of this model of care, called “Pathway to Home”, arranges for short stays at Ponderosa Lodge for clients in hospital who either require residential care placement

peacewalk The Raging Grannies lead a great turnout for the 37th annual Kamloops Walk for Peace, the Environment and Social Justice on Saturday, May 5. The theme for this year’s peace walk was, “For the Common Good”. An estimated 250-300 people attended the event this year.

or who need a few days to strengthen before returning home with community supports. Pathway to Home supports Interior Health’s philosophy that the home, with appropriate supports, is the best place to recover from illness and injury, manage chronic conditions and live out final days. Interior Health has addressed these issues with a plan of increased flexibility, efficiency and enhanced care that may help prevent unnecessary hospital visits and admissions. This creative approach brings the total number of beds at Ponderosa to 136. The temporary beds will remain open until next year when 125 publicly funded residential care beds are set to open in Kamloops through a contract with Buron Healthcare Ltd. Under Pathway to Home, discharge planning will begin immediately upon admission to hospital. Respite care is expanded to include education about chronic disease management, nutrition advice, and other services. Admissions will occur over the next few weeks, with the Admission team looking at the needs of those either in hospital or in the community.

Artists soar to new heights at bird themed art exhibition

Every year on the second weekend each May, people from all around come together to celebrate Migratory Bird Day, an annual awareness-raising event highlighting the need for the protection of birds and their habitat. This year the event celebrates the connections between migratory birds and people with the theme of, “Together Through Time”. As Kamloops welcomes the warm sunshine of Spring, an impressive art show dubbed “Flight” has been organized by a group of local clay artists reflecting the symbolic value of birds and to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day. The installation at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre features over 20 collections of recent works produced by Bonnie Keats, Sheila MacDonald, Rhona Armes, Pat Hall and Megs Waterous. The opening reception of the “Flight” exhibition, held Thursday, May 3 was a tremendous success where more than 200 art enthusiasts and birders gathered to be inspired by a creative focus on all things avian. The event’s highlight was the opportunity to be in

the company of the artists and chat with them personally about the work on display. The five artists that dedicated their time and talent to organize the show are all highly experienced in their craft. Each artist explores the topic with their own ideas and perspectives. Some of the works embody the lightness and freedom that defines the expression “free as a bird” while others reference birds’ journeys, often an exhausting one during which they go to their limits. The artist themselves attest that the months leading up to the show involved pushing boundaries. Journeys and transitions in their creative and personal lives, with some of the artists having to address life changes and injury, brought about a sense of growth and moving forward or in different directions. As a result, sophistication was evident and the works resonate authenticity. The show will run until May 26 and most of the pieces exhibited are for sale so bird lovers are able to purchase their favourites to take home to their own nest.

The individual artists featured in the Flight Art Exhibition are donating a portion of their sale proceeds to Bird Studies Canada, an organization committed to advancing the understanding, appreciation and conservation of Canada’s wild birds and their habitats. Photos from the opening reception and more information can be found on their Facebook events page - FlightArtExhibitionKamloops.

Mini-murals, live music, sales, specials and more – continued from page 1 “Saturday is the grand finale,” finishes Gay. “We will be turning the 300 block of Victoria Street into a pedestrian promenade. The Kamloops Arts Council will be bringing some of their artists down, hosting workshops, offering demonstrations and having sales. “

Along with Art on the Street, the pedestrian promenade will feature a Community Band Festival, Entertainment Zone, kids activities and the very popular Mascot Mania Parade. Uncle Chris the Clown will be leading a merry band of mascots on a parade up and down Victoria Street. Helping him celebrate is the Kamloops

Rube Band who along with song brings bright colours and lots of energy. The fun all happens Downtown this week starting Thursday, May 10 and goes steady until Saturday, May 12. A full schedule of events can be found by visiting www.kcbia.com. Tanya Orozco, freelance

Marigold Mile gets a facelift On May 7, City of Kamloops Parks staff began revitalizing the Marigold Mile on Columbia Street. Plans include removing the existing turf and replacing it with brick paving, irrigation upgrades and marigold bed upgrades. This project is a continuation from last year, when the City put in new landscapes and irrigation systems to reduce its water usage and maintenance on these medians, while still

retaining the beautiful floral displays that make it a Kamloops icon. The facelift also includes the extension of Marigold Mile from the existing medians on lower Columbia Street through to the Columbia Street exit off Highway 1. Because of the popularity of the Marigold Mile program the City of Kamloops will be working with local businesses to add new marigold beds along this important travel corridor.

A whole new season of gardening workshops at the Public Produce sites in Kamloops will be starting! Last year’s workshops proved to be fun, useful and very wellattended so the Public Produce Project are looking to increase the variety of learning opportunities offered this year - especially since the addition of the new McDonald Park garden on the North Shore. Three workshops in the planning stages include: what to plant to help friendly pollinator insects, the specifics of cultivating and applying your own compost, and the soil-to-plate journey of a recipe

In Downtown Kamloops on Friday, March 30, visiting artist Elinor Whidden, presented by TRU’s Walking Lab and Visual Arts, led a guided walk featuring Rearview Walking Sticks, which combine traditional hiking poles with scavenged automobile rear-view mirrors. Whidden is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Toronto, and her current practice is investigating myths about the Western Frontier as a way to critique contemporary car culture. She use sculptural assemblages fabricated from scavenged car parts, which refer to pioneering modes of travel such as canoes, dogsleds, knapsacks, walking sticks, and snowshoes.

Don’t let your personal dilemmas interfere with your goals. CANCER (June 22-July 22)  You can look into new jobs but don’t count on getting help from someone who may have promised you assistance. Hobbies will be good for your emotional well being. Risks will not be profitable. Be willing to listen, but don’t be fooled. LIBRA (Sept 24-Oct 23)  You will communicate easily and should be able to accomplish all that you set out to do.
