Helping out our global neighbours in Nepal On April 25 a major earthquake hit the small country of Nepal. Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless with entire villages flattened across many districts. Centuries old buildings were destroyed, heritage sites erased off the map in one of Asia’s poorest countries who had no real ability to fund a major reconstruction on their own. Arwen Williams of Arwen’s Apparel in downtown Kamloops was scheduled to be in Nepal when the earthquake hit. She and her traveling companion, Tekla Foulton were going to make their way to Nepal for business but at the last minute Arwen had to cancel and sent her companion alone. When the earthquake struck, Arwen waited desperate hours to hear from her friend, praying for good news. For frantic days Arwen continued her attempts to contact Nepal and find her friend and traveling companion but communication was severely compromised from the quake and the after shocks were making rescue and recovery a nearly impossible task for emergency workers. Thankfully, Arwen’s dear friend was not hurt and made her way to safety when the seismic natural disaster occurred. Messaging was still slow, even an email took days to reach Nepal but Arwen kept contact and through her companion witnessed the devastating aftermath of a country struggling for survival. It is times like this that we remember how small the world really is and although the earthquake happened on the other side of the globe we are in fact connected through friends, neighbors and family members. It is a testament to the caring, compassionate community we live in that Kamloops is supporting relief efforts for Nepal and wants to - continued on page 2

Columbia Street widening project
Let’s get this party started!
Thursday, May 14 marked the kick-off to the Spring Festival and Festival of Experiences in front of City Hall as BCLC celebrated their 30th anniversary with a BBQ and cupcakes. Dodie Goldney’s Instamatics performed for a huge crowd of partygoers on this sunny downtown Kamloops afternoon.
City Council authorized awarding of the 2015 Columbia Street Widening Project contract to BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd. in the amount of $2.675 million. The Columbia Street project will include the addition of leftturn bays at 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Avenues and the closure of the 2nd Avenue median. Also, included are utility relocations, signal and lighting improvements, pedestrian upgrades, centre medians and landscaping. Construction may begin as soon as May 19, starting with the relocation of a major BC Hydro switch box, which will necessitate the closure of 4th Avenue at Columbia Street for up to one month. The work will require trenching across 4th Avenue at two locations – 4th Avenue at Columbia Street and just south of the alleyway (between Columbia Street and Nicola Street) that crosses 4th Avenue. On Columbia Street, two lanes will be kept open (one each direction). However, 4th Avenue, between Columbia Street and the alleyway, will be closed to all traffic. During the closure of 4th Avenue, transit buses that access Columbia Street from 4th Avenue will be rerouted. Visit www.kamloops.ca/kammute for weekly traffic updates.
Funding for student summer jobs MP Cathy McLeod announced that young people in Kamloops will have access to summer jobs to help them gain valuable skills and work experience. “This region is receiving over $457,131 in Canada Summer Jobs funding to hire one hundred and six young Canadians,” said McLeod. “Canada Summer Jobs helps students gain the skills and experience they need to be successful, now and in the future, while earning money for the upcoming school year.” Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are fulltime students intending to return to their studies in the next year. This summer, the Canada Sum-
mer Jobs program is expected to create approximately thirty five thousand jobs while helping employers address skills shortages. Since 2006/ 07, the Youth
Employment Strategy has helped more than 611,000 young people develop skills, to the benefit of the Canadian economy. “Canada Summer Jobs helps
students, employers and our local economy. It is yet another example of how our government is creating jobs and economic growth,” concluded McLeod.
Nepal earthquake shakes up Kamloops - continued from front help a country in crisis. Arwen Williams and her friend Tekla Foulton are two such community members and with the Kamloops Rotary Club intend on bringing hope and much needed relief funds to the people of Nepal. On Monday, May 25 at 6:30 pm the Rotary Club of Kamloops is hosting a potluck dinner and silent auction fundraiser for Nepal to benefit earthquake victims. At Flavours Of India located at 550 Columbia Street West and with a minimum $10.00 donation you can bring your favorite dish
to share and hear presentations from Arwen and others during this compassionate fundraising event. Arwen will be donating a beautiful eco friendly jacket from her modern gypsy style clothing line as well as some stunning hand picked jewelry pieces for the silent auction to bid on. The Kamloops Rotary Club is still looking for sponsors and donations for the event. Businesses as well as individuals who would like to assist the victims of the Nepal earthquake are encouraged to attend and share in this humanitarian effort. “There are many
refugees who have not been included in the victim count,” Arwen informs us. “Tibetian refugees, the Rohingya of Burma as well as many other displaced persons from countries around South Asia have fled to Nepal and there was no way to get an accurate count of how many refugees were actually present when the quake happened.” If you would like to help or would like more information please contact Alex Mey with the Kamloops Rotary Club at alexmey@me.com. RIH seeks artwork for Sacred Space The Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) is seeking original artwork for the windows of RIH’s Sacred Space. Sacred Space is a place of refuge for hospital patients, patients’ families, visitors and staff. A place to reflect, to grieve, and to find strength, comfort and healing for body, mind and soul. The Sacred Space is culturally inclusive and welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds, including those who do not identify with any faith. It is the first of its kind in the BC Interior. The space incorporates reclaimed pinebeetle wood, ceramic tile
flooring and natural light in its design. RIH is now seeking an artist who has experience in glasswork projects to provide artwork for the space’s north-facing windows. Interested artists will be invited to meet with Viktor Gundel, spiritual health lead at RIH, for more information and to view the space. If you are an artist with experience in glasswork projects and would like to learn more, contact Kathy Sinclair at the Kamloops Arts Council by May 29: info@kamloopsarts.ca or 250.372.7323.

The excitement is tu-tu much at MS Walk
On Sunday, May 24 stretch out your hamstrings for the annual Scotiabank MS Walk. Lace up for someone you care about and walk, run or roll from one to ten kilometers through beautiful Riverside Park and the Rivers Trail easy wheelchair accessible route. Be inspired by community hope as Kamloops joins together to make a difference in the lives of those affected by Multiple Sclerosis. The Scotiabank MS Walk is a family-oriented, community-supported event that offers walking routes of varying lengths including a wheelchair-accessible route and features start/finish line activities such as inspiring words from MS Ambassadors (people living with MS), entertainment, team awards and more. Enjoy a continental breakfast, delicious lunch as well as replenishing rest stops along the route. The vibrant celebration at “Walker Village” will fill you with hope and the sense of accomplishment just knowing that you have helped bring an end to MS. The only thing that can make this event better is bringing along your friends to participate as well. Create or join a team and continue the long tradition of community support bringing friends, family, coworkers and colleagues together to raise funds and awareness to MS. Last year the Kamloops Scotiabank MS Walk raised over $79,000 to help end MS with over five hundred and fifty participants and forty-nine enthusiastic teams. The event was a huge success and this year, organizers wish to continue the growth and show what Kamloops and area people can do. The money raised by the largest fundraising event for MS in Kamloops will go to cutting edge MS research and community-based programs that work to improve the quality of
life for all those affected by MS. Everyone that registers for the Kamloops Scotiabank MS Walk and raises at least $20 will be entered to win a Hakuna Matata Getaway. It means no worries about the show, dinner or accommodations as this exciting prize package includes two tickets to the Disney spectacular stage show “The Lion King” on July 11 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, dinner at The Abbey with a $50 gift card and a night’s stay at any Hallmark Hotel, such as the Ramada Inn and Suites Downtown Vancouver. The contest closes May 26 and entrants must register by the Walk event day in your location. One winner will be randomly selected from all eligible participants of the Penticton, Kelowna, Kamloops, Nelson and Trail Scotiabank MS Walks. Every year more than 40,000 Canadians in more than 160 communities across Canada support the MS Walk and raise vital funds for people living with MS. The Scotiabank MS Walk is a celebration of the power we each have to change the lives of Canadians with MS by coming together at the Scotiabank MS Walk and through fundraising efforts try to make a tangible and life-changing difference to thousands of people living with MS. The Scotiabank MS Walk is a heartwarming and meaningful community gathering, and it’s a chance to reconnect with old friends
and make new ones along the way! Right here in Kamloops, Susan Cook’s life was turned upside down one year ago. At the age of 45, with a job she loved and two young daughters, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Despite having to change her life in a way she never planned, she is not letting MS get the best of her. “I am doing the MS Walk to make a difference for the future generations. I need my kids to see what life with MS can be like”. For Susan, her family is the center of her life. Her team, Cookn’4 Awareness, is not only about fundraising to find a cure for MS, although they have raised nearly $3000 to date but is also about raising awareness of MS within the community, and even within her family. The support Susan receives from her family is crucial. “It is easy to become an introvert when you are sick. When they are around, smiling, it is a lot easier. It is easy to give up when you are alone”. For Susan and many people like her the Scotiabank MS Walk on May 24 is all about the power of people coming together with a common goal of community support, public awareness and continuing research to one day find a cure for multiple sclerosis. If you would like more information or to donate please contact the MS Society at 1-888-304-6622. Trina Budai

Nominate your favourites The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and TD announced on May 14 that the call for nominations has officially begun for the 2015 Business Excellence Awards. “TD’s values of providing legendary customer experiences, and being an extraordinary place to work, align perfectly with the Business Excellence Awards and we are happy to once again be the Premier Sponsor of this important community event,” stated Lindy Baird, branch manager with TD. “It’s time for everyone to think about who they want to nominate,” stated Steve Earl, president of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce. “Anyone can nominate and any business can be nominated. It
only takes a couple of minutes, so make someone’s year by nominating your favourites!” This year, the Awards Committee is pleased to announce a new award category for Employer of the Year. Employees are encouraged to nominate their employer for this one. “This new category is sure to be a popular one”, stated Earl. “There are so many businesses that go beyond the norm in their treatment of employees and we want to make sure that they are recognized.” Nominations can be made online at www.KamloopsChamber.ca, at TD Bank locations and Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, 615 Victoria Street.

There was a lady in her 90’s who became a sort of local celebrity because she had recently gotten married. The local news station decided to interview her. The interviewer asked questions like how it was to be a newlywed in her 90’s. “This isn’t my first husband, so it’s not much different than the others,” she replied with a smile. “Oh? How many husbands have you had?” the interviewer inquired. “This one will be my fourth,” she replied.
“I was married in my 20’s to a banker, then in my 40’s to a circus performer. After that I married a preacher.” “What does your current husband do?” “Oh he’s a funeral director.” The interviewer laughed and then asked how she came to marry these men from such different backgrounds and personalities. “It always made sense to me,” she replied. “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go.”

An 80-year-old man was having his annual checkup, and the doctor asked him how he was feeling. “I’ve never been better!” he boasted. “I’ve got a 20-year-old bride who’s pregnant and having my child! What do you think about that?” The doctor considered this for a moment then said, “Let me tell you a story. I knew a guy who was an avid hunter. He never missed a season. But one day went out in a bit of a hurry and he accidentally grabbed his umbrella instead of his gun.” The doctor continued, “So he was in the woods and suddenly a grizzly bear appeared in front of him! He raised up his umbrella, pointed it at the bear and squeezed the handle.” “And do you know what happened?” the doctor queried. Dumbfounded, the old man replied “No.” The doctor continued, “The bear dropped dead in front of him!” “That’s impossible!” exclaimed the old man. “Someone else must have shot that bear.” “That’s kind of what I’m getting at...” replied the doctor.

City of Kamloops Overlanders Bridge Rehabilitation Project The Tranquille Road exit ramp and Fortune Drive overpass are closed for approximately 4 weeks. The traffic signal at Leigh Road and Fortune Drive has been adjusted as follows: - A left turn arrow for north bound traffic turning off Fortune Drive onto Leigh Road; and - A right turn arrow for traffic turning south bound off Leigh Road onto Fortune Drive. The Tranquille Road entry ramp onto the bridge will remain closed to regular traffic, with priority access for emergency vehicles, transit and school buses. To assist with priority access, traffic control personnel are stationed at both ends of the Tranquille Road entry ramp onto the bridge, as well as near the traffic signal at the south end of the bridge. Motorists are asked to obey all traffic control devices and traffic control personnel. Please remember that the traffic control personnel play a vital role in helping to protect the traveling public and are crucial for guiding traffic safely and efficiently through the construction site. Thank you for your patience! Motorists are also reminded that there is a 30 km/hr speed limit in effect throughout the construction zone, 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week. Please slow down.

echo stargazer Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You’re naturally blessed with one of the beautiful voices in the zodiac. It’s peaceful, calm and spellbinding but you have a tendency to hold back. This week allow yourself to try something new by letting your heart speak freely and uncensored. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) A boost of energy arrives just in time to get your health and self-esteem back on track. You’ve taken a back seat to the needs of others and it’s time to look after yourself. Perhaps a trip to the day spa is all you’ll need. Money arrives in the mail. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Sometimes the skeletons stay in the closet and sometimes they seem to walk out all on their own. This week you’ll enter a cycle where the past just won’t leave you alone. Have confidence in your decision to move forward. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Someone has a secret crush on you and they’d like to let you know. It could be from your past or someone new with a good poker face. Either way, you’re going to keep everything private until you get it sorted out. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Love is waiting in a social setting so it’ll be a fun week for networking. A short temper and a lack of preparation give rise to challenges in the workplace. Default to a higher authority for the best solutions. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A new attitude is growing quickly with answers to your new awakenings but forcing your opinion on others will only cause a rift. Focus on your best self as you enter the spotlight at work and simply let the new you shine. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) You’ve been in home and family mode for a while now as you build the foundation for your next seven-year cycle. This has helped with the career but hurt in love. Don’t let go of anything just because of a few bumps. Travel is in the cards if you’d like to say hello. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Short tempers have you wondering if your latest romance is worth the stress. The bigger picture says it’s only temporary bumps on a beautiful road. A surprise inheritance is on the way. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’re rushing around just to meet the demands of the day. This is causing tempers to be short and accidents to surprise. Even though communication is generally cloudy for everyone right now, you’ll be able to get your message across in love. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Everyone else might be in a rush but you’re focused and calm. This is giving you the confidence to keep going on a creative project. Go for a hike with someone special and a little spark could signal the magic you’ve been waiting for. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Children and playfully inspired creativity fill your week with laughter and joy. Yes, there are nagging problems around the home but the deeper waters of trusted family and friends will calm the days. Let your inner child come out and play and love will welcome you into a bigger spotlight. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The New Moon gives money one last push in your direction. Take advantage of the signs and use the good fortune as a stepping-stone towards new goals. Details need attention but the bigger picture requires both understanding and patience.
